Week 10
Reading 1 - #nosnowflakes:
Snowflake is "a term used to mock [someone's] perceived intolerance and over-sensitivity" (Haslop, O'Rouke and Southern, 2021 pg. 1,418) and was coined by older generations who were describing the younger generations. This article is about a study which was conducted on a campus in England which looked into "student’s perceptions of and attitudes to different forms of online harassment" (Haslop, O'Rouke and Southern, 2021 pg. 1,418).
It is a sad fact that because of the increased abuse that people face online, it is now seen to be the "norm" (Haslop, O'Rouke and Southern, 2021 pg. 1,418) when online. This has lead to people learning to "take it" rather than learn to "address it" (Haslop, O'Rouke and Southern, 2021 pg. 1,418) which is a much healthier and safer way to deal with any abuse that they may receive. As people usually use social media and other chat platforms alone, they find it harder to talk about issues which they may face which can lead to much worse consequences down the track.
Another sad fact which is bought up in the piece, is that some groups were more likely to receive abuse online compared to others. People who identified as "female" or "transgender" (Haslop, O'Rouke and Southern, 2021 pg. 1,423-1,424) were more likely to be abused online when compared to other demographics. It was also found that the kind of abuse they faced, was worse than what other demographics would face.
The blame should not always be given to younger generations though. In the bar chart on page 1,428, the yellow section tends to be the biggest in every category. This claims that people hear about certain actions which are "unacceptable" but they do not know how to report it to "the university/student's union" (Haslop, O'Rouke and Southern, 2021 pg. 1,428). This is a problem caused by older generations who are running these institutions and therefore need to be educated/informed about how to put in proper pathways to report abuse and how to comfort/help someone who is currently/has experiencing/experienced abuse (online or in-person).
These findings clearly show that for younger generations to be called 'snowflakes' is completely wrong. Just because it is a different kind of abuse (being not immediately physically threatening and online), does not mean that it is still not abuse.
Reading 2 - The draw of the ‘manosphere’: understanding Andrew Tate’s appeal to lost men:
The manosphere is "an overlapping collection of online men’s support communities that have emerged as a response to feminism, female empowerment, and the alienating forces of neoliberalism" (Rich and Buljaka, 2023). Andrew Tate is the influencer behind making this term relevant and it has played a role in making him "hundreds of millions of dollars" and "amassing millions of fans". Tate is a believer in the values that the term possesses and he spreads his message via online platforms. This has lead to a very large (and quite vocal) following of especially young men. This article looks at the reason why people are so fascinated with Tate even though his messages are so horrible.
The reading finds that the main reason why young men are so attracted to Tate and his messaging is because they are facing an array of issues in society. Through the research, problems with "education", "relationships" and "loneliness" (Rich and Buljaka, 2023) have become apparent and young men do not know where to find the answers. This is where Tate comes in, as his videos touch on all of these topics and because nobody else is talking about these issues, that's where they go for help and information.
The way which this reading ties in with the first one is that Tate's messages are often unhealthy and "aggressively misogynistic" (Rich and Buljaka, 2023). This leads to things such as abuse and anger towards women if not handled quickly and correctly. This sadly could explain why women are targeted more in online abuse, as this is where these manospheric influencers are spreading their messages.
As the reading suggests, the answer to these problems is not to "cancel" (Rich and Buljaka, 2023) these influencers (as this is just a short term fix) but to address the underlying problems which young men in society face. This will lead to a much more successful and long term fix which will eventually result in these manospheric influencers dying out due to lack of attention.

This is all Rachel/@dexondefense fault. Without further ado I present SNATER (snowy/tater)
-Tater’s first day on the team is tough. He doesn’t speak English too well and it’s a struggle to answer all the press questions about how he likes Providence and the new team.
-When he (finally) gets back to the locker room, everyone else has cleared out, their interviews much shorter
-Except one guy. The goalie? Tater doesn’t know his name but this guy’s still in there
-Goalie? is like “Hey dude welcome to the team! We’re happy to have you here!” and he’s? so pretty?
-Tater goes over and hugs him because that’s easier than finding the words.
-Snowy is surprised by this but. It’s nice. It’s really really nice. He wants to hug the new guy more often.
-This leads to after-practice hugs becoming a Thing. “For good luck!” they say. “He’s really cute!” they think. So they add in before-practice hugs for even more luck.
-Snowy takes it on himself to be Tater’s Official Tour Guide and shows him around the city. But he’d rather watch Tater watching the things. It’s so cheesy and adorable.
-One of the Aces rushes the goal during a game and Snowy gets hurt. Next period, Tater punches the guy so hard & so much he gets himself ejected from the game.
-Snow’s like “wtf? why would you do that?” and Tater’s like “I thought it was obvious. I like you.”
-aaaaaaa these two are cute
