stuck in the house until thursday due to snow-pocalypse. my to-do list now consists of two things: (1) eat my way through the leftovers and (2) write until my frozen little fingers fall off.

Our pipes decided to burst last night just as it’s supposed to start warming up and getting back to normal today.

These southern homes are not built for this kind of cold. Definitely not extended periods of cold like this.

Water is off and James is off to the hardware store to pick up some new PVC to fix us up. Again, relieved to be married to a man who can do all this. I can’t imagine there’s a plumber available here for days. Even pipes under the roads have been bursting!

In the meantime, anyone up for skating on the new rink in my backyard?!?!

I know it’s been a while. The winter months are usually pretty hard on me mentally (lack of motivation, busy work schedule, existential dread) but I just wanted to post something to share that I’m alive and enjoying the first snow day we’ve had. I’ll probably get back to actually creating content once the weather starts warming and my mood stabilizes.

The above pictures were from earlier today while the ice was coming down. Here's the current state of things:

At my house we have discovered why part of our ceiling came down in the spring of 2024; we have an Ice Damming problem and I could hear the drip drip drip in the dormer directly above the section that dropped. (Damn ice.) It doesn't leak in the rain, just when there's ice and snow in a particular combination where the warm roof melts the snow and the water is trapped with nowhere to go.

my observations:

everyone's bringing their trucks into the snow day and have no desire to exclude them. arkansas and mississippi (not necessarily as southern as they are country, but they're our neighbors so i'm including them) have been the most dedicated. i'm kinda impressed. acknowledgement of the frat boys on my campus who tied a rope to a truck and all sat on.. i couldn't tell if it was cardboard or carpet or what. i fear for them

tennessee and louisiana brought boats into it? strange, but they're having fun. i want in

none of us have sleds. if it slides, it rides. boxes. suitcases. pool floats. bins. tins. that one person from unc who did a dorm mattress covered in dish soap. stolen road signs. doesn't matter

also, none of us have winter clothes. we're working with what we have. this ranges from hunting gear to hoodies and sweatpants to blankets to the people on my campus who went to the other end of the spectrum and did a polar plunge in swim trunks

our snowmen are so fucking funny. i have seen more with titties than without

people are skating and playing hockey in the street. cool af

updates to come if our roads refreeze. there's a hill outside my apartment and i just realized i have a big box

every time northerners react to southern states getting shut down for snow in the most annoying way possible i’m putting their cars on our roads and making them brave the hills coated in a solid inch of pure ice

Went out to shovel my parking spot at home

I saw someone shoveling across the way and after getting through half of what I needed to do I finally went over to offer help

Turns out to be a nurse from a nearby hospital! So I helped her shovel her spot: there was a gnarly layer of ice that my metal shovel handled really well

I asked if she was willing to help me in return and she agreed so we were able to knock out the last half of mine really quick

Made me feel really good I could help out a neighbor! Genuinely wish we’d exchanged numbers so we can help each other out again if needed
