Our first full day of touring started with at Wadi al Abyad, the best place in the world to see the #Moho – the boundary between the earth’s crust and mantle. Here we could see a sharp contrast between the #mantle rocks, consisting of a type of #peridotite called #hartzburgite, and the ocean crust rocks made of layered #gabbro. So how is it possible to see such rocks at the surface of the earth and on land? This because in the late Cretaceous these rocks which form part of the #Semail #Ophiolite were conducted onto Arabia as an ocean basin was closed. The Semail Ophiolite is the best exposed ophiolite anywhere in the world. We then moved onto the Gubrah Bowl this is a beautiful amphitheatre that technically is a basement core anticline, or a #geological window. The upper rocks of the anticline have been eroded away leaving the older rocks exposed in the base of the bowl. After this we had a picnic lunch in Wadi Mistal. Here we were able to observe Cretaceous coral #fossils as well as lake deposits formed from a Quaternery lake that filled the wadi in a wetter climate and when it was dammed by a landslide. Next we saw an angular #unconformity between precambrian rocks and late #Permian rocks. We then moved on to Wadi Haslan where we examined Snowball Earth deposits. These deposits formed at a time when it is thought that the whole Earth was glaciated. The deposits we saw were 712ma tillites and glacial lake deposits with dropstones (rocks that fall out of icebergs) immediately overlain by tropical dolomites. These tropical dolomites are known as the cap carbonates and can be found all over the world on #SnowballEarth deposits, showing when the climate very rapidly warmed at the end of Snowball Earth.

i see a lot of folks talking about how all lesbian couples in popular media end up with one of them dying
never feel, little ones. there is a novel coming where neither of the ladies die. promise.
(i know, i have an inside source, being one of the authors and all)

Our #namibia #geology tour is virtually at an end. We depart to tomorrow after visiting the Geology Museum in Windhoek. Here are some pictures of the last 4 days which in addition to geology included 2 days of game viewing in #etosha #nationalpark Pic1 shows James Cresswell and the Hoba #meteorite which fell to the earth 80,000 years ago and is the largest meteorite ever found. Pic2 the Tsumeb mining museum which is just up the street from the now abandoned #tsumeb mine. The mine was one of the world's best mineral mines and in it were found the world's best crystals of Azerite and Dioptase. Pic3 shows the #waterberg escarpment. The rock is #jurassic sandstone. The escarpment is caused by the reactivation of a Precambrian fault (Damaran) when Gondwana split to form the South Atlantic. Pic 4 shows cap carbonates that signify the end of #snowballearth Pic5 is an African #elephant. Pic6 shows a mother and calf Black #rhino Pic7 shows a Spotted #hyena Pic8 shows Zebra Pic9 shows sleeping lions and Pic10 is of an Angolan #giraffe (at Hoba Meteorite site - Grootfontein Namibia) https://www.instagram.com/p/BveaCELJReM/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1rtbq3pn7thzi

Today was an absolutely superb #geology day on our #namibia trip. We saw a #petrifiedforest , #snowballearth dropstones, the #twyfelfontein #worldheritagesite rock engravings, foliated granite and the oldest rock of our trip. Pics 1-4 show 270ma #permian petrified trees which grew in cold humid conditions and were up to 30m high. The trees are contained within fluvial sediments of the Karoo supergroup. Pics 5&6 show dropstones: pebbles that were dropped out of iceshelves or icebergs in Snowball Earth 630ma a time when the whole planet was glaciated. These pebbles were then stretched and deformed as the Damara mountains uplifted. Pic 7 shows a syntectonic granite with large feldspar crystals orientated to the stress field. The granite is around 600ma. Pics 8 and 9 are from the Twyfelfontein WHS and are between 4 and 8 thousand years old. Pic 8 is the most famous is the 'Man-lion' Pic 9 shows a giraffe but also a furseal and penguin showing the people travelled to the coast 200km away. Pic 10 was the oldest rock of the trip, a 2.2 billion year old paragneiss of the Congo craton. (at Namibia) https://www.instagram.com/p/BvUmrqYJ72G/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1aa7smg95vprk

A fantastic first day on our #oman #geology tour which we are running with the help of @goldenhighlands Our first stop was Wadi al Abyad the best place in the world to see the #moho - the boundary between the earth's crust and #mantle We then moved to Wadi Haslan where we had a sumptious picnic lunch and examined #snowballearth deposits: 712ma #tillites and glacial lake deposits with dropstones immediatly overlain by tropical dolomites. We then moved on to a site of an #unconformity between #precambrian rocks and #permian rocks. The precambrian rocks contained #stromatolites while the Permian rocks showed a marine transgression from a beach to limestone. A great first day in wonderful Oman!
