Hi I have some fashion facts for you! Hopefully they’re helpful and correct. For reference I’m poor and legally forced to be (disability), and fashion is my special interest. This is a long post and a combo of fun facts and some help being a bit more frugal.  So, if you care about the environment there are some tanneries that have their own water treatment facilities the handle the waste of chrome tanning, horween for certain does, I’m fairly certain there are others. It’s not universal  Chrome tanning’s big benefit is durability over traditional levels, notably prevention of rot, but almost everything in the sneaker space isn’t built in a way that you can take it to a cobbler, so that sort of cancels out.  My biggest suggestion for getting a sustainable, quality leather fashion shoe as a poor person is going to be thrifting a grandpa shoe. If you want more in depth information I suggest rose anvil’s channel the link is to a video specifically about thrifting. The big thing you want to be looking for is a replacable sole. Cobblers are actually fairly cheap and any resolable shoe is going to last a lifetime.  About the minimum price for a good durable resolable sneakerlike shoe new is $200, I make clothing purchases  -in an emergency when something breaks and becomes unusuable (usually I get replacements from places like walmart or dollar tree to hold me over.)  a ready to wear cheap skate shoe lasts me 6 months to a year total walking time without repairing it myself, I have one pair of summer sneakers, one pair of hot weather shoes (offbrand crocs this year) and one pair of winter boots. Try getting something with a bit of a chunkier sole and more tread for durability on both of these. -when I’ve saved up enough to buy something with longevity. I’d suggest, if like me you’re slowly building a wardrobe, that you start with staples. A minimalist leather sneaker that’s resolable, like these, is a good choice and most brands of these of any value are around $200. (Just be aware leather quality isn’t always going to mean they fit you well, some brands *cough archibald london cough* have shitty fit in the ankle, just fyi)

If you want a workboot, and can’t find anything used of decent quality, redwing iron rangers are a really commonly suggested brand.  if you want leather just generally in your wardrobe, and can’t thrift any locally, goodwill’s auction website pretty regularly has leather vests fairly cheap, and they’re good garment leather for refashioning. Garment leather you can sew by hand with leather needles 

I’d reccomend thicker thread for sewing with leather and longer stitches than you’re used to to avoid too much perforation. You can also use contact cement if you have access to good ventilation  I’ve been poor a long time. get shoes less often. avoid jumping on trends as much as you can. don’t use poor people as an excuse for supporting things that harm us and fall apart in our closets whether or not we care for them properly. support donating items. support cobblers and repair infrastructure. support reparable items being made in the first place. don’t do shein halls. fuck pleather. 

yes, the massive popularity of pleather is totally because of vegans and not because its like leather but cheaper. youre so smart and insightful. i guess ill go buy some chrome tanned leather now so i can be environmentally conscious
