When I was looking at characters for #AsianPacificAmericanHeritageMonth this one felt pretty unique because until now, he wasn’t Asian. Let me explain. I loved GI Joe when I was a kid, and like so many kids I was instantly drawn to the mysterious and cool ninja Snake Eyes. He dressed all in black, never removed his ninja mask and visor, carried a sword, had a wolf sidekick named Timber, and was the foe of evil white-clad ninja Storm Shadow. An elite commando and ultimate ninja warrior, Snake Eyes was the epitome of cool. When I was a little older I got my hands on an issue of the GI Joe comics which happened to have an origin story for Snake Eyes where he was in a helicopter crash that left his face and vocal cords burned and scarred. But the thing that struck me most was that the guy in the green fatigues, well before donning the black ninja mask, had white skin and blonde hair. I remember being stunned by the revelation that Snake Eyes wasn’t Asian. 99% of the time we don’t even see his face, why did he have to be white? Couldn’t we have this one? So I was THRILLED when they announced they were rebooting the GI Joe film franchise with a Snake Eyes origin story and had cast Crazy Rich Asians’ @henrygolding in the titular role (not to mention the amazing @kojiandrew from the Cinemax/HBOMax show Warrior as Storm Shadow). It was really too bad that Marvel pushed Shang-Chi to September, because it would have been cool to have an #AsianActionHeroSummer #apahm #aapi #aapiheritagemonth #gijoe #snakeeyes #henrygolding #snakeeysfanart #gijoesnakeeyes #snakeeyesorigins #asianactionhero #arashikage #ninja #gigjoefanart #fanart #digitalart #artistssupport_feature #artshoutout_gallery #yourartsupporter #das_4u #lovesupportartists (at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) https://www.instagram.com/p/CPJAmfojjUH/?utm_medium=tumblr
