the mariana snailfish is. an alternate form of the axolotl
#i once described them as a rubber axolotl that you left on your car dashboard in the summer#and that’s what they are.#anyway the mariana snailfish has weird bones (notably it’s skull) with incomplete ossification all over the place#they’re top predators in the hadal zone and eat pretty much anything smaller than it#it’s a contender for the deepest living fish along with another species of snailfish that has only briefly been caught on video#dove talks#ocean#axolotl#i woke up wanting to talk about the snailfish. sorry#this is a goof. theyre very different species#they just look similar due to somewhat similar environments#the axolotls native habitat is an underground lake which can require some of the same adaptations as the deep sea#i could make this comparison with cave olms as well. they’re even more like snailfish!#snailfish 🤝 olms: no eyes no problems#fun fact about axolotls as well. they have teeth!
