Lena was the hotshot pilot. Cocky, arrogant, with an ego a little overinflated - she had to be, to survive in the boys club that was the elite flying class she was a part of. It wasn't enough to be as good as them; she had to be better. Being in the cockpit as early as 11, thanks to classes her father enrolled her in, she was uniquely capable of handling the g-force associated with some of the more daring maneuvers taught to her team as they came up. This, again, later helped her to land the Slipstream position with Overwatch, but I won't focus on that too much right now.
While excellent in the air, she was no position to be a leader. Arrogance, coupled with a confidence in all that she did, often led to her disobeying orders and breaking formation; usually for the betterment of the team, or completion of the mission, but that didn't matter. Her insubordination would have left her grounded, if it weren't for her repeated successes.
This, with her age and arrogance in consideration, prevented her from climbing the ranks within the RAF. Lena was fine with that - anything that landed her behind the desk, or training people, or that otherwise called her from the sky and inside felt brutal. And unfortunately for those who were tasked with overseeing the woman, she was simply too good to pull from the sky.
