           A festival was supposed to be somewhere fun to hang out and interact — not just an escape from a busy work week like Chul had accidentally used this weekend as so far. He'd spent the first few days just wandering between stages, soaking up the musical aspect of it all and letting himself relax. Now that this weekend was almost over, he knew he should have been trying to have fun not just on his own. ❛ Who's been your favorite this weekend? ❜ Chul attempted to strike up a conversation with the person nearest to him, figuring asking about the artists was a good enough place to start. ❛ So far at least. ❜ He tacked on as an afterthought in case they were banking on a performance yet to happen tonight.

there was nothing wrong with being peter — except zasha was peter every time. "can't i be a fairy too just this once? someone else can be peter or maybe, peter's gone away!" the small voice attached to the even smaller frame trying to do it's very best to appear confident and large, peeped up hesitantly. "only girls get to be fairies." the circle of friends, a term used lightly, never even bothered to come up with another excuse. "besides, you like being peter!" they did like being peter, who wouldn't? but there wasn't even a tinkerbell this time! they weren't even playing peter pan! they didn't need a peter or a hook. any of the lost boys or wendy's brothers. they just were all being fairies! but woojoo was still being told no, they couldn't be a fairy. "i am a girl." a tone full of defiance and self-protection shot out angrily as a foot stamped hard against the ground. "nuh-uh, that's not what ___ said." the blank was filled in various ways depending on the speaker. it wasn't what woojoo themselves had said, or one of the friend's parents, or it wasn't what woojoo's uncle had said. the man had tried his best to have a sit-down with the parents and explain how woojoo felt to them but in close minded russia, it had only made matters worse. in fact, a chunk of the kids were still allowed around woojoo only because of threats made by her kremlin working uncle when parents started saying woojoo was a bad influence, something was wrong with that girl. she was going to confuse their babies. she wasn't normal or safe to be around. every feminine pronoun had been said with a sneer on their face as they looked at the nine year old wiltering in the seat besides their uncle, all of them failing to realize it was the nasty hatefulness in their words and not the pronouns causing the reaction. woojoo was more than fine with feminine pronouns, that had already been covered. woojoo just wasn't fine with being treated like they weren't a girl. the way they felt was confusing enough to themselves as they navigated it, they didn't need to be told they were invalid or wrong on top of it all. "boys can be fairies too." the one friend who did on occasion try to be on woojoo's side in things spoke up with well meaning in their heart but woojoo's shoulders fell lower. "but i'm not a boy." their low voice was lost among all the others arguing that boy fairies weren't as special as girl fairies but woojoo still shot the girl a half hearted smile, knowing she had been trying to help. it was never any different, the only thing that varied would be the loudness of the denials. unless on their own or with the few friends who didn't care unless with the bossier friends, woojoo was never a fairy. never a princess. it would only get marginally better (but also exceptionally worse) as they all aged up in school and started thinking for themselves instead of parents in their ears. some of the little girls became friends woojoo still keeps in touch with despite moving to the states at sixteen and others made their life hell but woojoo had at least gained the confidence and strength needed to know their truth. and to know that anyone, regardless of anything, could be a pretty fairy.

there were tears on the roundness of woojoo's cheekbones as they zoned back into the present, standing in front of the mirrors as the dress was adjusted here and there. tears that also seemed to be shimmering in vanessa's eyes after the explanation of why woojoo had gotten misty eyed to begin with as soon as they had seen the dress corseted into place. "sorry, got lost back there for a minute." apologizing without need to, woojoo gave another little shimmy of their hips to watch the material flow and another giggle escaped and dissolved the inner awkwardness they had felt after spilling the tale.

the crown was birthed in vanessa's brain after the story and presented to woojoo as they got ready for the fashion show. tears again brimming, it couldn't be stopped as they enveloped vanessa in a hug with all their tiny but mighty glory. "you're magical, vanessa." stepping back, woojoo gave herself a look over before meeting vanessa's reflected gaze and beaming widely. "just like me."

La Playa Festival || Friday

Where: La Playa Festival When: April 23rd 2021 Featuring: Brandon Kelly

Minjoon took a deep breath before he stepped out onto the stage. Heart hammering against his chest, he would swear he could even hear it echoing around his skull, drowning out the polite applause he was given just for showing up. A musical equivalent of a participation trophy - the thought alone was enough to bring an amused smile to his face; he’d have to tell Jian that one. He wondered, briefly, if anyone could see the amusement on his face. If anyone was looking close enough to notice, if they could notice his nervousness or the heat that had rushed to turn his ears pink. Or were the stage lights helping to mask his features? It’s not like he was new to being in the spotlight, he’d helped Brandon enough time with shows and outfits but it was different this time. Yes, obviously his best friend had been the one to once again supply his clothes but they weren’t the focus. Not this time. This time it was all him.

It felt like it had taken forever to get behind the microphone stand, a weird mixture of unearned applause, cool night air and hot lights on him making him feel slightly suffocated on the short journey to where he was supposed to be. A question intruded his thoughts. What if his voice cracked now and everyone laughed? Don’t think about that Minjoon, it’s time to begin.

Awake

“Hello everyone.” No cracking. No laughter. It was off to a good start. When he opened his mouth to speak, he had to swallow down the apology on the tip of his tongue, the promise that the band they actually wanted to see wasn’t too far away. Brandon’s voice repeated his earlier statement: They wouldn’t stay around if they didn’t want to see you too. He quickly found the familiar face at the front of the crowd. If it gets too scary, remember it’s just like any other stage you’ve been on. Just look at me, okay? I’ll be right there, cheering the loudest. Okay Joonie, you got this.

“I think I’m supposed to ask if you’re all having a good time but I usually just see people screaming in response and in any other setting that would make whoever asked like really nervous... y’know? I won’t keep you too long, I met some awesome people backstage who are making sure their chemicals are extra romantic for you. In the meantime, if I may, I’d like to tell you a story. ” He swallowed again. If I may. It wasn’t like he was giving anyone much of a choice but he didn’t have time to dwell on that as the first notes of his next song began.

Abyss Three Venus Adoration for you

He stayed behind the microphone for most of his songs, one hand curled around the stand itself and the other on the pink microphone he’d been gifted as part of his outfit. It was barely anything, did nothing to mask any part of him but he’d still felt safe behind it. Enough even that he didn’t have to close his eyes or only stare at Brandon as he sang. 

Moon

Minjoon pulled the microphone from the stand as the tempo picked up, stepping down onto the main floor of the stage and following the choreography he’d been slaving over since making the decision to get up there. A reminder to thank Brandon flashed through his thoughts, briefly as he scolded himself to focus on his steps, his words, the other dancers. He still had three more to get through before he could let himself relax.

Starlight Love Me Slow Dances

He reached up to mess with his hair slightly, another blush creeping across his cheeks as it had done whenever the area had filled with applause for him, polite or genuine. He ducked his head slightly, a small nod of thanks before he lifted the microphone once more. Minjoon’s gaze traveled over the top of the heads of the attendees, looking without seeing, positive he’d panic and freeze if he saw someone he recognized that he wasn’t already aware was there though he couldn’t spend the whole time focused on his best friend - at least he was sure he couldn’t. It was impolite. Probably.  “It’s not really a love story, not that kind at least but I can’t begin to explain how grateful I am that you’ve let me share it today. We’ve almost reached the end of the story now - That story at least, not mine. No, that’s a song that’s still unwritten. Though I hope, at the end of the day, it’ll still sound similar to this...”

Epiphany

“Goodnight Santa Monica!” Joonie blew a kiss to crowd and only offered a small wave before he was taking quick steps to leave the stage, head bowed once more o to hide his blush. He didn’t need to check to know that Brandon was rushing to meet him offstage, something that was confirmed by the hug he was wrapped in and the praise that made him hide his face, embarrassed.

• la playa festival — day two.

The euphoric adrenaline from last night still shooting through him like electricity was probably the only reason Jae had been able to drag himself out of bed this morning and down to Day Two of weekend one. His body was more exhausted than even the time he had worked doubles and triples every day for a week straight once. Everything he had needed to do to prepare his performance had left him drained, the way he had fallen into a lay across the bench to be lowered at the end of his set having more tiredness than choreography at that point...but damn had it still looked cool as fuck. Now, today was a rest day, Jae taking it easy as the group he was with strolled around the festival.

( His insides hadn't been taking it too easy in their panicked screaming when they'd run into his favorite six non Santa Monica based Koreans he'd met last night and had gotten to chill with for some time today, that was for fucking sure. )

Food, music and just vibing — today was a day Jae wouldn't mind repeating more often as he felt completely in his element. Something that still wasn't too common even after all the time he'd been in California. Hanging out near one of the stages, he felt arms creeping around him and a flash of material told him it was Kian, the action telling him that someone else was probably coming up to talk to him. Between the lack of his trademark don't approach me scowl and the success of his set, it seemed like a lot more people than usual wanted to talk or hang for a bit. ❝ Don't mind him, ever since yesterday he's appointed himself head of security. ❞ He laughed, his good mood apparent. And probably as shocking as the blinding smile the crowd had witnessed during the final song last night. ❝ I would promise he doesn't bite but I've never made a promise I potentially can't keep. ❞

Pride has more goodies down below! 

The Fruit Eating Contest: Contestants will compete to eat the most fruit spanning from every color of the Pride flag. After each level, each winner’s prize will grow in size and in value. 

The Pride Parade Coronation: Pride King, Queen, and Themperor Jack Ambrose will make their official appearance as Pride Royalty on Monday, June 7th! 

The Parade: The annual Santa Monica Pride Parade will begin at Bergamot Art Station and will circle around town from City Hall to the Library, 3rd Street Promenade, Palisades Park, and end at Santa Monica Beach to kick off the after party!

The Drag Race 5K: Contestants will compete, dressed in drag to race from Santa Monica beach to Bergamot Art Station. The winner of the race will win 5,000 in cash!

The Rainbow Hot Box: Just as you suspected it, the infamous rainbow parachute that descended upon all of us as kids will be used as Santa Monica’s largest hot box. All proceeds go to local dispensaries and the cannabis reform project to drop marijuana charges on incarcerated individuals. 

The Fashion Show: Fashionistas and Fashion designers unite! Santa Monica will be having one of the largest outdoor fashion shows in a decade! Sign ups for the show are here. All proceeds will go to LGBTQ+ charities. 

The Paint Twister: Why not play Twister with a little twist to show off your best twister skills. That’s right, there will be paint on each twister circle to get colorful and messy! Make sure you run down to Santa Monica Beach to participate! 

The Pride of Pico: Artists in Pico will have a chance to display their art that depicts what pride means to them. Tickets to the art show are $5 and proceeds will be split between Pico District and the LGBTQ+ charities of one’s choice.

The Santa Monica Drag Show: Hosted by Amber Dextrous, Latrice Royale and Bianca Del Rio, come on down and watch the queens kick off Pride with the wildest time! 

Pride Raffle ( click here to enter the raffle ): The annual Pride Raffle will have dozens of prizes including an all expenses paid 8 day and 8 night stay in The Louvre sponsored by airbnb, an all expenses paid 8 day and 8 night stay in Seoul, Korea and free backstage passes to see Monsta X, and the first prize a 3 week all expenses paid trip to the islands of Santorini & Mykonos, followed by a tour of Athens, Greece! The raffle ends June 21st!

The After Party: The Pride After Party begins promptly after the parade starting at 2pm. This all-nighter event is sponsored by the City of Santa Monica. Please take care to rest when you can during these acts. This goes to the performers as well. There will be designated tents and hotel rooms available around the beach for those to get rest so they can party refreshed and ready to go. The Pride After Party will end at 6am the following day. ( Performers have a specific task to make sure to drop their set lists over the course of the month. All performers must have their set lists in no later than June 30th. )
