Story: 

She didn't know who killed her. They had snuck up from behind the first day her mentor allowed her to leave the camp by herself.

She was distraught and inconsolable, but that was nothing compared to how she felt watching her family grieve for her.

Or rather, how they didn't.

She knew she wasn't as close to her mother as some kits. Where Larkpaw agreed with Larkclaw on everything, Fernpaw stuck closer to her own beliefs, and butt heads with her mother on many occasions.

Fernpaw often wondered if her mother had preferred her brother since the day they were born. After all, she named her son after herself. How did Fernpaw get her name? From a leaf that flowed in the den?

Even then she didn't think she would ever watch her own mother so emotionless at her vigil.

Larkpaw at least seemed very upset, but that faded away.

Both of them were quick to replace her. Larkbush found a mate, and a day never went by that he wasn't smiling with her. Larkclaw had another litter, three tiny kits named Splashkit, Patchkit, and Pikekit.

And you know what?

She doted on those kits like they were the most precious things in the world!

She spent every second with them--feeding, soothing, playing with, everything. The daughters and the son were equally loved.

Why didn't she love Fernpaw?

Why was Fernpaw so easy to replace?

Greencough hit, taking the lives of Pikekit and Patchkit. The daughters, the daughters Larkclaw openly wailed for at their vigils, the daughters she insisted on burying herself, the daughters she actually loved.

Bitterness dug deeper and deeper.

Splashpaw was an apprentice when Larkbush and his mate, Smokeflower, had their first litter.

Fernpaw tried to swallow her anger. Sure, her mother was terrible to her, but her brother wasn't. They had only fought when Larkpaw agreed with Larkclaw and Fernpaw wouldn't, and Larkpaw insisted on fighting for his mother's opinion. But other than that, they enjoyed playing games and cared for each other.

So Fernpaw told herself to be supportive, even if they couldn't see her. She watched their little kits and as they named them.

What about the sister he actually grew up with?

What about Fernpaw? Had everyone just completely forgotten about her?

She could show them.

She could teach them to never forget her again.

She spoke to Sootberry, the medicine cat apprentice. She convinced him that Smokeflower was evil, that she was the one to kill Fernpaw--which probably wasn't true, but she didn't care all that much--and that exile wasn't enough, because Smokeflower is prophecied to return to the Clan with a vengeance and many cats on her side.

Fernpaw acted the rogue StarClan cat, which wasn't entirely wrong. She made Sootberry think that Smokeflower was destined to kill few, then leave in exile, and come back stronger. It would be turmoil for all the Clans, but StarClan had decided to let destiny run its course, as everything will be right in the end and certain things had to happen and yadayadayada.

Fernpaw didn't want more cats to die like her, and decided to go against them and visit Sootberry anyways to warn him. He asked her what he could do, and she responded by asking what could he do other than exile to prevent Smokeflower from killing again?

It took a while before Sootberry could bring himself to do it. The first time she visited his den due to a wound she got while out patrolling, he hesitated too long. The second time, he did it, feeding her deathberries mixed in with the rest of the poultice.

Sootberry was a mess after that. As far as he knew, he did what was right, but that didn't make seeing the kits that he murdered the mother of any easier.

That wasn't Fernpaw's problem, though.

But why should Larkbush be the only one to suffer? If Larkclaw refused to grieve for her daughter, then she would be forced to grieve for every kit she chose to have after.

Fernpaw didn't think convincing would work this time, but Sootberry did it. It was quicker, perhaps because Sootberry was so worried that he would hesitate if he didn't. He had asked Splashbee to escort him while he collected herbs, then bit down on the back of his neck when Splashbee bent down to pick up dandelions.

Now, Fernpaw had gotten reckless. She didn't watch to see if anyone had followed her when she snuck into Sootberry's dreams once again and told him that now that Smokeflower was gone, Patchpaw was destined to take her place in the prophecy.

Fernpaw was exiled to the Place of No Stars, but not before Patchpaw's head was slammed onto a rock.

It was colder in the Dark Forest. Fernpaw missed the warm grass and birdsong, but she didn't regret what she did.

If she couldn't be loved, then she was okay with being hated. As long as she wasn't forgotten again.

Additional Information: 

--Sootberry might go to the DF too, but since Fernpaw was caught manipulating him, he might get a free get out of jail card.

--Sootberry only planned to scare Patchpaw into leaving the Clan because he didn't want to kill an apprentice, but when he threw her to the ground, she hit her head on a rock.

--Based on cats on Clangen. For some reason Fernpaw's mom HATED her, but was bffs with Fernpaw's brother, so this idea sparked.

As for WHY she hated her, that's up to interpretation. Did Fernpaw get it wrong or did her mother really not grieve for her?

And for who killed Fernpaw....that's also up to guess. Heck, maybe Larkpaw did it.

Uhhh *flips through ocs* cherrysong, sootpath, and halfstream.

i’ve pitched a few solid ships for cherrysong in cherrysong / pigeonpaw and cherrysong / applepaw, so! focusing on sootpath and halfstream...

though i don’t know how smoothly it’d work out in the start, i am intrigued by the idea of sootpath and morningnose. they’re both full of attitude, and i feel like they’d grate each other’s nerves to begin with, but...morningnose has shown that she’s actually able to wear down the sharper edges of cats like mousetail, so why not sootpath, too? i think they’d have fun gossiping together, and though their similiarities might serve as an obstacle at first, it’d benefit them eventually to have each other, i think! i really can just imagine them both going to town on rumors about their clanmates, snickering behind paws and pointing when cats aren’t looking...it’d be funny.

for halfstream i have to go a bit more out there because there’s no one particular in nettleclan i feel that would pair well with him, but one little concept i have is smokeflower being paired with him. they’re both dads who have daughters with major daddy issues, so! let them meet, bond, discuss the endless torment of trying to reconnect with their kits only to be rejected time and time again, and...i mean, halfstream’s already proven he’s willing to look across borders for relationships, and though i think he might’ve learned his lesson, i do believe he and smokeflower could be good for each other even just as friendly supporting figures in each other’s lives due to their similarities.
