Smithers Street Pianos
Smithers has recently joined the cities of Edmonton, Toronto, Vancouver and Ottawa by installing two new public street pianos. Both pianos were painted by local artists and are open for anyone to play and fill the air music.
Tumblr media
The first piano is situated right in front of the Smithers Museum and Art Gallery on the corner of Highway 16 and Main St. It's grand opening was on July 6th and a had a great turn out. Since its introduction to Smithers, many locals and tourists have tickled the keys with their fingers.
Tumblr media
The second piano, painted by local artist Mark Tworrow, was sent up to a much more unique location, up on the south side of Hudson Bay Mountain to the popular hiking destination Crater Lake.
Tumblr media
On Friday July 15th, many brave Smithereens, including myself, woke up early to hike up the mountain to witness the piano being flown in by helicopter. Due to a low cloud ceiling the arrival of the piano was delayed, which was ok for me as I got to explore even more of the mountain!
Tumblr media
The piano did eventually arrive by helicopter and landed safely on the mountain. Although many people may find it odd to have a piano on a mountain to quote the words of Smithers Street Piano organizer Laura Hols-Wimbush "we are mountain people, we are music people, and this piano represents Smithers in both parts".
Tumblr media
So if you find yourself in Smithers this summer and want to see a beautiful and interesting sight,  hike up to Crater Lake and see that the hills really are alive with the sound of music. - Kristen

Tyhee Lake Triathlon
On Sunday July 10th approximately 150 participants were out at Tyhee Lake Provincial Park in Telkwa to take part in the Tyhee Lake Triathalon. The weather decided to cooperate this year and be the perfect temperature for the morning start of the standard triathlon at 9:30 am.
Tumblr media
There were various ages all participating in one of the four races, standard, sprint, try-triathlon and duathlon. Participants could enter as individuals or as a team in anyone of these races. For many this was their first attempt at a triathlon, while others were seasoned veterans with impressive races under their belts.
Tumblr media
It is safe to say that everyone had a great time out today, whether they were racing, volunteering or cheering on friends and family members. I hope to see even more people next year and who knows, you might even see me in the water. - Kristen

Rainy Day
Hey everyone! It's the first week of July yet the weather has decided to not cooperate and give us rain, and lots of it! Even though the rain helps the forest fires most of us prefer the hot summer days. But even with this rain there is still tons of ways to have fun in Smithers.
A popular attraction rain or shine is the Bulkley Valley Museum and Art Gallery located right off highway 16 on the corner of Main Street. This museum houses artifacts and information from the stone age, indigenous communities around the area and all the way to the present. Admission is by donation and there is even a great area for kids! The art gallery show cases local artists from the north and is also admission by donation.
In the Smithers area there are lots of great driving tours of the mountains, local lakes, and even some odd but cool sites. Some of our most popular driving tours include views of the glacier along the Telkwa Highroad, scenic mountains near Telkwa and Quick, as well as a drive to see the iconic shoe house!
Known as little Switzerland, Smithers' downtown is a great place to walk even in the rain! Home to a variety of locally owned shops, restaurants and bistros, our Main Street is a perfect reflection of Smithers culture, heritage and pride.
Hopefully the rain will make its way away from the Bulkley Valley soon, but in the meantime try some of these attractions and let us know how you find them! As well if there's any that we missed that you feel need to be mentioned feel free to let us know!
