i can't help but notice astrid and joan redforn were very rose-coded love interests (astrid was just a bit of flirting but still), if you ever have the time (and wanted to) i would love to read your thoughts on what role they play in ten/tentoo and rose's relationship...and if you think he ever told her about them 👀

i don't think joan is rose coded at all, honestly. i think she's rather the opposite of her. racist, judgemental, boring. but that doesn't really matter because the doctor did not love joan because he is not john smith. and more so, joan did not love the doctor. that's the important part of it. i think joan is, honestly, a stand in for rose to show the audience that he wants to be human, that he actively craves that. it's not about joan as a person, which is also part of the problem.

a really interesting parallel to me is when he asks joan to look into his eyes and see him, but she can't and looks away. just that stark contrast to rose putting her hand over tentoo's heart and looking into his eyes, seeing him and obviously believing him. because rose intristically knows him, remember "rose would know." is about rose knowing the right thing to say, it's about her understanding him even if she doesn't know every little aspect of his traumatic past and how she made the present and future have value and excitement.

in s3 the doctor is absolutely drowning (which is why he needs a break from being himself) in his grief of having lost rose, to him losing her was essentially a death and him inviting joan, to me, reads as him searching for rose in other people, because he didn't take the chance to offer his hearts to her when he had the chance and for what? he loved and lost anyway and that is absolutely something he carries with him up until his regeneration.

i can see him telling rose about joan and the entire situation if/when she ever worried about him feeling "trapped" or wanting to leave (which i can see jackie putting in her head bc of her own insecurities which we hear in the audios) but i think there is a lot that isn't focused on, especially his journals:

i absolutely lose my mind at these. especially "i find myself wanting to draw a perfect rose over and over." and "i know face, i know she is my-" this is something that is glossed over but my god, think how massive this is. he had his memories wiped so deeply that he forgot himself, that he can't even remember what the tardis is called, but he remembers HER name. he cannot stop dreaming about her, drawing her. even here he could not escape his love for her, even here there was no respite. THAT is what i think he would tell her. and yes, about joan in the reality of it - how it never occured to him that john would fall in love because he was already so in love with her. but all those things he wanted as john smith are things that live inside him and always did BECAUSE of rose and because of how human she made him, and that's why rose is the only person he could ever live a happy human life with.

i think rose would be jealous and maybe a little hurt, because that's who she is, but i think she would also feel like... how could someone NOT want him? that would floor her. because she doesn't just want the john smith bits, she wants the doctor. she wants all of him and that's what makes them special.

(and tbh, i headcanon that before the cannon started working rose had a meltdown and gave up for a few weeks and had a one night stand with a guy that sort of reminded her of the doctor from a certain angle and was nice but it was unsatisfactory and left her feeling even lonelier- so they're kinda even. remember rose is around 24 in journey's end. they were seperated a while, esp on her end 😭)

i think astrid would be more amusing because she definitely IS rose coded and a lot of it is her flirting with him and him sort of floundering about it, but it being nice to not wanna die for a second too and he enjoyed her company because she reminded him of rose. which i think rose would probably preen about until she finds out astrid also died 💀 like my man COULD NOT get a win!

tldr, i think for their relationship to work (and of course it does) he would have to be honest with her about everything: from her making jack immortal, to donna losing her memories, to everything that happened while they were apart with her being honest about her life in return, BUT i also think that their relationship is largely about healing and living in the present so i don't think they would dwell those things per se. i think their hardest obstacles would be the ptsd they both probably still have about being seperated/apart and, for a while, the fact that ten is losing his absolute mind while they're so happy together. that would be hard. but i think they're just so magnetic and drawn to each other that they can't help but find themselves happy and wrapped up in each other.

What books - not fanfic, you would recommend to anyone.

the captive prince series (by c.s. pacat). this isn't fanfic, sure, but reading it will give you the same raw, self-indulgent sort of feeling that usually only fanfic will give you. slow burn, enemies to lovers, clever scene placement and pacing. MASSIVELY influential to my writing style and the way i plan my plotlines-- if you like my fic, you'd like this series. be mindful that it has some darker themes and is a bit controversial (mostly because of literature purists who believe that literature shouldn't have darker themes...) but overall a 10/10 read.

johnny got his gun (by dalton trumbo). written from the pov of a soldier who lost all 4 limbs and most of his face to a bomb. horrifying, realistic look at what major injuries & sensory deprivation can do to people, the ethics of assisted suicide, etc. unique writing style-- it's basically stream of conscious, barely any commas at all. absolutely brutal.

lockdown: escape from furnace series (by alexander gordon smith). Hey, This Juvenile Prison Is Pretty Fucked Up (i.e. a mile under the surface and does experiments on its inmates). a young adult novel, but make it horror. this one was also pretty influential to me when i read it as a kid-- very likeable and well-written characters, tasteful tragedy, good plot with interesting pacing.

shakespeare in general, esp hamlet & othello. i'm an english major at heart, what can i say. if you haven't gotten the chance to read shakespeare outside of your highschool classes, i'd recommend it. or catch a live performance and/or a movie production-- you'll find it easier to follow than just reading the text on a page, i promise. i uh... Might have a sideblog out there full of hamlet content. i mostly read classics tbh-- it's hard to think of things to put on this list that aren't like.... 'paradise lost' or something.

Yeah! Kinda the whole concept of companions from all these different backgrounds - with all these complicated pasts - running away with him. “I’m outside the door, invite me again” the way like, he’d meet them once, invite them, they’d say no, and then they’d show up and kinda like, try and track him down to travel w him, “so we can go back and play pretend” which is like. Exactly what they all did w traveling back in time etc etc. not caring where they’re going but just kinda needing to escape their lives “I don’t know where you’re going but do you got room for one more troubled soul” leaving behind their families but not really caring “I don’t know where I’m going but I don’t think I’m coming home and I said I’ll check in tomorrow if I don’t wake up dead”, the way they usually (at least Matt Smith and prior when this song came out) generally fall in love with him “let’s be alone together”, he never ages and like. Also never matures gdhhehdj “we could stay young forever”…. Yeah I saw it all pretty damn vividly like I genuinely couldn’t imagine it being about anything else esp if you think about it as 10 and Rose specifically

Combat Style: Two/One-handed tank. Main tactic is to rush in, cause as much damage/chaos as possible to shake up the opponent, & clean up what the ranged attackers of the party (usually Rumarin, Inigo and/or Lucien) weren't able to deal with.

If the Nords want their old ways so damn much, why fight for a divine from the Imperial Cult? Why not go back to the actual old ways? No, this isn't about worship, not to the men leading this so-called rebellion, they just needed something other than their racist bullshit to fool the common man into throwing their lives away for the nobles sitting comfortable in their thrones.

Also during their whole thing of getting into their role of dragonborn, they get a bonus 'fuck this dude actually' towards Talos, Ysmir, whatever the fuck he calls himself. (tldr; it sucks but good luck hearing Tei say that fully)

Gray-Mane or Battle-Born?: Neither, ask them again they will punch you for the love of Ruptga they get asked that every time they enter Whiterun.

Stormcloaks or Imperials?: Also neither, Tei hates em both n think they can all choke. Unfortunately they were forced to join the latter due to, yknow, calling dragons & causing massive damage in Imperial territories during isolated fits of rage and the group being more aggressive in wanting something in return for "letting it slide"....oops

Opinion on the Thalmor?: Oh absolutely despises them, they loudly complained having to work with them during the CW & would go out their way to disrupt their plans/piss them off. Sneaking was an option they did not take during the Embassy quest, if it helps paint the picture.

Opinion Of Ulfric Stormcloak?: Tei doens't say they hate people often...but they sure as hell hate Ulfric. Again, their experience in Windhelm added to this heavily, how both the Dunmer & Argonians were treated like shit, with no help whatsoever from the Jarl or guards when the local Nords targeted them. It's still up in the air if I keep this for Tei's story, but I have it where they knew Chases-Starlight's parents, who were killed. When Tei went up & demanded justice/an investigation, only to be brushed off because it "wasn't a priority," it completely destroyed what little empathy or hope they had left for Windhelm as a whole.

Opinion of The Empire?: Cowards too weak to continue fighting back against the Thalmor, in their opinion, & holds these views they grew up with even when being strong-armed into aiding them. If anything they're at least attempting to use their influence to hint towards a rebellion against the Thalmor, but the Empire could also full-on dissolve & they could give less of a shit.

What's your opinion over Utopia? i have seen till episode 3 and i would stop watching if it wasn't for Cory Michael Smith, in my opinion the English one was a lot better , i wasn't huge fan of its characters but the story and directing was over the top and don't get me started about the phenomenal music scores by Cristobal tapia De Veer the same person who wrote the original music of Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, the Amazon's Utopia is not as good as the older one was in many things and maybe i am rushing to judgement since i haven't finished all season but i don't believe my opinion will change, love Cory though he is amazing as Thomas Christie.

Other than a vague memory of knowing I enjoyed it, I have no recollection of the original uk Utopia at all, I watched it so long ago!

So that likely helped my enjoyment of the Amazon version, because I simply have nothing to compare it to (and on the whole music... is not that important to me, so I doubt I'd have even noticed that the original show had a better score, even if I did remember it! Soz, I'm just... bad at music).

So upshot is, I DID enjoy the Amazon Utopia, even without Cory. I grew quite fond of the other characters (aside from Thomas' dad, perhaps, I wasn't so interested in him). I liked how none of them were really good or innocent (save for the kids! And I esp enjoyed the evolving relationship between Grant and Alice - did you meet Alice yet? - and their relationship with Jessica).

Post episode three you start getting more exploration of the antagonists too - Arby (RB?) starts to develop and doubt/question his 'purpose', which I found interesting, you meet more members of the organisation/family, and there's a bit of exploration of how brainwashing / being raised in a cult affects your understanding of the world and if you can really ever be fully desensitized from emotion/empathy/love etc (Jessica's character/chatacterisation/development is a lot about that too and there's one moment between Thomas and his father that relates to the theme that struck me in particular, but I won't elaborate cos I'm trying to avoid specific spoilers!). But stories about characters escaping/fighting/defying brainwashing/cults are... kinda my jam, so that's more of a personal reason for my enjoyment I guess (that was one of the big aspects of Cas' plot/character that made me fall in love with him and his story).

I thought Becky and Ian's little romantic subplot was sweet and post ep 3 it has some comedic moments that made me chuckle as well (and I found Becky was a joy to watch in general tbh). Also thought Wilson was Fun :p

I liked the black humour. I LOVED the artwork for the Utopia comic (ofc maybe the uk version was better? but like I say, I honestly can't remember it).

BUT, all that said, my enjoyment is still only what I'd call a casual or passing enjoyment. Like, it hasn't changed my world. I'm not rushing to rewatch any of it (although I do kinda wanna rewatch the original now).

I'm invested enough that if they do make a second season I'll tune in. I wanted more immediately after I finished, but I was deep in marathon mode at that point, lol. But... if another season doesn't get made I'm not gonna be too upset/disappointed. And... honestly, unless my dash starts talking/posting serious meta about it to keep the story fresh for me, there's a decent chance that I'm gonna forget about the whole thing in a week or two :P

Based on my reaction to the show I think you are correct in thinking your overall enjoyment will not increase that much if you keep watching - but I would say it's still entertaining enough to make watching to the end worthwhile (and Cory does get more screentime post ep 3 ;p)

Do you (or your followers) have any recs for "classic" poets? I'm really into modern poetry but I also love used bookstores, and they don't exactly sell button poetry books. I'd love to know who too look for next time!

ooh this is such a good question for so many reasons! we spend a lot of time talking about destroying the canon, but sometimes canon and older or obscure writers are the only ones we have access to!

i love used bookstores, and sometimes it’s overwhelming to just set aside an hour to sit on the floor and browse. but you should totally do it sometimes, coffee recommended! it’s also a cute date. just pick a book, flip to a random page, and see if you like or hate it. rinse and repeat. i find that used bookstores often have a ton of poets i’ve never heard of, and they’re sometimes local to the location. super weird and alienating for my anxious self, but it’s super fun esp if you’re traveling and want poetic souvenirs :)

Audre! Lorde! Omg! Yes! Maya Angelou. Omg. See also bell hooks (also a brilliant essayist.) Feminist women who wrote about living and being. So much love. So powerful.

in high school i had a thing for John Keats of the early 1800′s. he’s quite traditional, but very emo nature boy, and accessible. he’s who got me into poetry.Robert Frost is another canon poet who deserves it. he’s surprising, but so grounded in the real world. i found that i related to a lot of his work, such as the hill wife.

Sylvia Plath for your in-your-feelings confessional poetry.

Lawrence Ferlinghetti is a Beat poet you might encounter and like. he founded city lights book store, and he’s a poet-activist-painter. if you ever find Poetry as Insurgent Art, you need to Get It.Gingsberg too, I guesssss. Tho I agree with Ocean Vuong in “Notebook Fragments” that if a guy says his favorite poet is Ginsberg, he is probably a douche bag. Ginsberg is like the tumbr/twitter eboi of Beat poetry. Aesthetically tm concerned.

Mary Ruefle is also so lovely. i actually have her book “madness, rack, and honey” in my bag right now. i am so smitten by this woman’s brain. see also, Anne Carson and Mary Oliver.

Wendell Berry is another brilliant mind and writer all around. He writes a lot of nonfiction about spirituality, but his poetry is full of wonder and appreciation for nature and the world. I love.

William Blake wrote these poetry and art chapbooks in the 1700′s. So beautiful and interesting to study in relation to his included art and the way these works play off one another.

T. S. Eliot wrote this book called  Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, and i wish i had kept it. it’s this absurd illustrated poem book about cats. straight up. it inspired the musical cats, which may or may not put a damper to things, but it’s an amusing, weird book you should try out.

Langston Hughes and James Baldwin. Study them. Ugh.And I can’t escape this post without mentioning e.e. cummings and Rainer Maria Rilke. People love them. Give their works a whirl.

Other women you should know incude Joyce Carol Oates, Gwendolyn Brooks, and Patricia Smith.

if you come across an anthology, you’ve struck gold. anthologies are really lovely ways to access many poets at once, and get a feel for a theme or identity. i esp suggest anthologies for poets of color. omg they’re so good.

i also suggest subscribing to poem-a-day. it’s an email that contains a poem and an audio recording, every single day! even tho it’s hit or miss, as each month has a different curator, i often discover my favorite poems through here. and it’s free ^.^

An Interview with Maryan Nagy Captan

copy/body by Maryan Nagy Captan is a poetry collection that explores identity, place, home, gender, and family dynamics. It was originally published by Empty Set Press in 2017. With the close of Empty Set earlier this, we have partnered up with ESP and are offering the chapbook as a free ebook. Did you write this collection to any kind of music?

This collection spans about 9 years worth of work. The oldest poem in the collection, "Housewife", was written in 2009 while "Blood Pact" was completed in 2017.  There are so many albums that are my tried and true and have been for the past decade which deeply influenced the bulk of the work: The Lemon of Pink by The Books,  Shake Shugaree by Elizabeth Cotton, Veneer by Jose Gonzalez, Noah’s Ark by CocoRosie, Aquimini by Outkast, Rain Dogs by Tom Waits, Plaisirs D'Amour by Rene Aubry, anything by Bessie Smith, anything by Kendrick Lamar, anything by John Cage, In Rainbows by Radiohead, the list goes on and on. 

Describe your favorite meal.   

I'm not sure if it qualifies as a meal but a minimum of 20 pieces of my mama's waraq ineb drenched in lemon juice (preferably eaten on the couch next to my dad while we switch between watching Wimbleton and Lebanese soap operas on DISH Network).

Choose three books that you've always identified with?  

I have such a hard time answering questions about identifying with books or characters. I think partially because I don’t read narratives where I identify with the characters. I read to escape into form and language. However, I do have books that I love and have read many, many times over the last several years. Tender Buttons by Gertrude Stein is a bible, as is Recyclopedia by Harryette Mullen, and Zong! by M. NourbeSe Philip come to mind. 

However, I find myself identifying much, much more strongly with visual art. I feel most connected to the work of Masao Yamamoto, Louis Bourgeois, Joan Miro, Paula Rego, and Ren Hang. 

Choose one painting that describes who you are. What is it?  

For the past few years, I’ve been enamored with the work of Julie Speed, an oil painter and collage artist based in Marfa, TX. My current favorite piece is titled “Eyes to See.” How does it describe me? I like to think that I am both figures in this painting. As a writer and performance poet, I get self conscious about overwriting or being too insistent in the work. As a reader and citizen of the world, I sometimes feel overwhelmed by the amount of information and insight that we’re expected to consume regularly. It can be suffocating. 

However, behind all the chaos of humanity is a bird and a tree and an open window.  I think this aspect speaks strongly to my desire to always find a sliver of hope in everything: an escape, a reminder, a moment of joy.

What do you imagine the apocalypse is like? How would you want to die?  

Even though it’s a terrible movie, I always loved the premise of The Happening. In it, plant life develops an airborne toxin that causes humans to commit suicide. 

In this version of the apocalypse, instead of an airborne toxin, all plants and trees develop a taste for human blood and devour all of humanity in a few days. I wouldn’t want it to last too long because it sounds horrific. 

In this scenario, I’d prefer to be gently leaning onto and then very suddenly be absorbed into Bald Cypress. Though, I hope I’m the first to go because I’m way too soft to actually witness any of this.

If you could only watch three films for the rest of your life, what would they be?  

This one’s too hard but okay: Beetlejuice, Cairo Station, and Chungking Express.

Where do you find inspiration lately?

Lately, I’ve been screenwriting and studying storytelling. It’s been really energizing and it’s changing the way I think about poetry. I’ve always been inspired by what I feel most challenged by so right now, I’m learning to tell stories through narrative and the three act structure rather than through emotion and musicality.  It’s really hard but the creative payoff is huge.

Where did you write most of your book? 

The majority of the book was written in Philadelphia, and three of the poems were written in Keene Valley, NY during a residency with Paul Smith College of the Adirondacks.

What was something surprised you recently?

I recently learned that a placebo can still have a positive effect on someone even if they know it’s a placebo which I thought was so fascinating.

What do you carry with you at all times?   

A piece of mica from Clark Park in West Philly.

Tell us a bit about your writing process. What works and what doesn't? What doesn't, but you keep trying it anyway?

I’ve always been self conscious about how little I produce but I’ve slowly come to understand over the years that I don’t write unless I feel compelled to.  

I can meditate on a poem for days before actually writing it. I’m obsessed with subjectivity (as a concept and with my own) and I feel most compelled to write when I’m in a state of deep introspection. I’ll meditate on an idea for days and when a poem finally comes, I’ll spend eight months editing it to death. I have some poems that have gone through 30-40 different drafts. The biggest challenge for me is to write a poem, edit once, then twice, and be done with it. The poem is done after the second edit. It has to be. 

One of my favorite mantras comes from the teachings of J. Krishnamurti: Observe your confusion. Study it. 

For me, what works is writing about something that scares me about myself.  At the present moment, I’m most interested in examining how I’m complicit in, even though I protest against, the deconstruction of the natural world. I’m attracted to hypocrisy as a theme and find it really difficult to write without relying on tropes. 

What doesn’t work for me is sitting down and saying “I’m going to write a poem.” The compulsion to write is an integral part of the process. Without it, ideas just don’t come. 

What are some of your daily rituals or routines?  

Birdwatching and drinking coffee is my favorite daily ritual because I like to pretend I’m retired even though I’ll probably be working for the rest of my life. (: 

What was the hardest part about writing this book?

Honestly, when Angelo invited me to publish with Empty Set, I already had these poems ready. They span the length of nearly a decade and I had already performed them dozens of times. These are the poems of my 20s. 

Now, that I’m in my 30s and working on a new collection, one that is intentionally thematically linked and far more narrative, I think the obstacle I keep coming up against is the question of whether or not each of the poems is building on the last or if the poems are merely reiterating the same ideas. 

copy/body is as a book is a collage: the poems are linked by their musicality, language play, and loose themes of domesticity. The current book I’m working on is much more intentionally themed and though there are individual pieces, the book is designed to be read as one long poem.

Ultimately, the hardest part of writing copy/body was finding the time to write and the hardest part about having time to write is actually writing. But maybe that’s the case for everything.

8. how did you come up with your s/is backstory? (for retrograde); honestly this question is very hard to answer, so ill just give a rundown on his backstory; he was born in gotham, to janet and doug spade. he has an older brother, giles. his father was a criminal, and was in and out of jail, which lead to his parents divorce when he was 11. his mother gained custody of jack + remarried to francis arnoult, a very abusive but rich man who would often pay off the gcpd. one day, retro found his mother dead in the bathroom, and vowed to get his revenge against the people who allowed it to happen. he moved into a small studio apartment and decided to take up the moniker 'aces', turning to crime to provide for himself. he eventually plans a burglary his stepfathers house with two other people, murders francis and pins the murder on the other two. afterwards, he begins to enact his plan of revenge on the gcpd...and he gets superpowers somehow also, dont ask me how yet, something to do with a strange meteor shower

Assassin’s Creed

from a Film student’s perspective

a.k.a. Things I liked about the AC movie

I held off on watching it b/c of the bad reviews I’d heard, but (as an AC fan, not a newcomer,) I actually find little flaw in the movie! The issues I had while watching resolved themselves while I was watching.

The eagle sequence that always precedes a change of scene with the sluggish pace of a Disneyland tour? That is the Animus mapping out the setting of the ancestral memory. In the present day, it signals the start of a Leap of Faith.

The billion-dollar fog machine (bleeding and animus) effect? It allows for the moment when Cal looks down at Ojeda who he is cruelly butchering and the two men are indistinguishable between real or a projection. The heavy use of back light also cuts a silhouette out of Cal, further erasing his identity and highlighting Aguilar. This is the moment for the audience to slowly realise that Cal has fallen to his ancestor’s pace and is breathing the role. The fog serves as both a visual and a metaphorical reminder to not take things at face value, or that “nothing is true,” and its heavy presence in the scene marks the moment when Cal prioritises anarchy over morality and is confused on every facet of his life except that he wants his father and mother to pay for his loneliness (allowing the destruction of the Creed would reduce his parents’ sacrifices to moot). The fog’s “draggy” effect also mimics that of the AC2 bleeding effect, where Desmond can trace the movement of the ghostly projections.

Another significant fog scene is when Cal is still in the Animus and he sees Aguilar walking towards him, when after an hour of watching Animus projections move around Cal as if he’s Aguilar, we know this isn’t a work of the animus. Cal is having a bleeding effect within the Animus. And he’s accessing all of his Assassin ancestors. This counts for Fridge Horror and Awesome.

Mama Lynch’s message to Cal beyond death is like Minerva calling to Desmond from Ezio’s time. Hair-raising and awesome.

Replacing the artefact in Alan’s hand with a fruit. Assassin, indeed. While I understand that the movie couldn’t resolve the Assassin-Templar war, the ending still would have left much to be desired if not for the BAMF Cal assassinating Alan in true Assassin style.

Speaking of Aguilar’s assassination of Ojeda, it’s like watching your player avatar while spamming the attack button. Aguilar catches Ojeda with a unique attack combo, following another combo, and another –– and not only are his movements familiar and awesome, but dramatised (smoke, slow-mo, avenge your beloved, bass-boosted music). Unlike in the games, you can also see Aguilar’s face while he shifts between anger and hurt throughout his punishing. You can see Sophia’s (movie-counterpart to Lucy) face as well while she witnesses Cal’s rapid descent to insanity as he perfectly synchronises with Aguilar. Here, I appreciate the casting of Marion Cotillard, because motionless acting requires skill; Cotillard and Fassbender remind me why AC has to go hard or go home when it comes to the casting and production of a film about the franchise.

The Abstergo security standard arms include crossbows. Awesome.

Moussa. The best side of the Assassins, a peacemaker who can still kick butt. He shines in Michael K. William’s delivery of, “Will you let us free?” and in the scene where he drops a basketball –– signalling that his hands are free to the security guards –– then drops some bombs. Moussa has a heart of gold and crazy sleights of hand.

Cal’s “What the hell is going on?” closely mirrors Desmond’s WTF moment in AC2 and my sentiments exactly after world domination dreamers and conspiracy murderers meddle with Cal’s lunchtime. Even after 7+ games of the creed, the movie manages to not only surprise me with the old idea of the Illuminati, but make the conspiracy and history believable.

Kurzel always manages to direct diegetic light so that the Apple looks like it’s glowing. As a film student, I love it; the temple window, the Animus projectors, etc.

The non-combative staff in all white wear what I thought were simple dress shirts and white slacks, but on a second look I noticed that their collars close with a significant gap between flaps so that it looks like they have a white band under their collars, like a Catholic priest. Seeing as they’re Templars, this detail is cool.

Throwing knives while leaping rooftops. Very assassin-like. Don’t even get me started on Le Parkour, it’s the game mechanics exactly –– along with, good or bad, the delayed changes of camera perspective as the system catches up with player movement. If you merge the cut-crazy camera from AC death scenes with AC rooftop chase scenes, you get the movie.

I just can’t stop gushing over the detailled replication of character movement between the film and the games. If a movie-based game came out that allowed my avatar to creep, fly, and attack exactly like characters from the movie, I’d be all over it. With AC, we have the opposite, but newcomers who watch the movie before playing the game will be pleasantly surprised, imho. The visuals in the movie also closely follow those found in the games, from Abstergo’s halls lined with plasma light fixtures that turn red during security breaches, to the (what I felt) random gardens in an Abstergo facility (esp in AC3), to the (what I strongly felt) futuristic but aesthetically horrifying Abstergo architecture (like a Japanese product, I swear. Good at hardware but not at interface). The reenactment of a Rizi painting (La Inquisición Española) via Aguilar’s memories is also enough to make this history nut gush.

Papa Lynch isn’t a burly assassin thirty years after his capture, but a prisoner who has been as disarmed by Abstergo as possible; he’s gained weight and been used by the Animus to the point of mental destabilisation. Kurzel breaks the cliché of the protagonist’s handsome dad biding for escape.

An apple-sized Apple, as opposed to a volleyball-sized one, allows the audience to immediately draw lines between the prototype model Cal first picks up and the round fruit Nathan tries to steal from Cal’s place at the lunch table. While a red and green fruit bears no resemblance with the golden artefact besides a spherical shape, their matching size makes it easier for Kurzel to prod the Apple into our subconscious awareness as we go deeper into the movie. I do appreciate that Kurzel made Cal’s apple a Granny Smith aka a Golden Apple (heh).

Consider that –– since the dawn of Hollywood –– we’ve been force-fed white casts, exaggerated “foreign” accents, or no foreign languages at all in movies that deserve better (The Last Samurai, starring Tom Cruise? Exodus, starring Christian Bale?? I love all these actors, but the casting directors should think twice). Then look at AC the movie: unashamed of speaking Spanish for half the film (with the local accent, too, I dig it) or of learning the Creed in Arabic, not afraid to cast POC for extras and main roles, and not censoring anything the game franchise doesn’t censor. 

Let’s face it, AC has been breaking boundaries since game one, and it’s only proper the movie follows suit.
