Clown Pagliacco has been used to signify "tragic clown": smiling on the outside but crying on the inside. Pagliacci is the title of a tragic opera which had its premiere in Milan, 1892. Canio, the lead clown in a troupe discovers that his wife, Nedda, is cheating on him. He confronts her about it while they’re performing in a play whose plot mirrors their real lives, then kills Nedda and her lover.
