Health issues caused by oral bacteria
Gingivitis and Periodontitis may indirectly make you susceptible to viral infections
Believe it or not, the bacteria hiding in between your teeth and gums, may significantly impact your overall health. The bacteria most associated with causing periodontal disease (Porphyromonas gingivalis) is now also being linked with other diseases, such as Rheumatoid Arthritis, Alzheimer’s disease, and can enhance susceptibility to HIV.
Researchers from the University of Louisville School of Dentistry found that the proteins produced by your oral epithelial cells, are attenuated by the bacteria that causes periodontitis, namely P. gingivalis. These proteins, called interferon lambdas, provide broad antiviral protection and activate antiviral genes, in order to protect you from viruses.
What gum and bone disease mean to your overall health
When someone develops periodontitis, their level of bacterial load, specifically P. gingivalis, overwhelms the oral cavity. Studies are now showing that P.gingivalis, although a major culprit in causing periodontitis, is also implicated in allowing viruses to enter the blood stream.
Normally, in a healthy mouth without periodontitis, proteins produced by the epithelial cells act to protect you from viral infections and other serious health issues. However, when someone has periodontitis, P.gingivalis slows down the production of those proteins. This leads to a much higher chance of contracting a viral infection.
Advice to reduce harmful bacteria
One way to improve your oral health is to become more aware of the benefits of taking oral probiotics (which you can read more about here). Keeping your mouth clean and healthy should be your top priority. Brushing twice a day, flossing, using a tongue scraper, as well as a fluoridated toothpaste, will aid tremendously in keeping those bacteria at bay.
Something that is not addressed often, whenever oral health is brought up, is the lack of attention to nutrition. Great dental health begins with your nutrition. Meaning, paying attention to the amount of sugar that you ingest, such as soft-drinks and candies laden with sugar, can go a long way in leading you to the right direction.
Snacking or grazing may lead to an increase in the bacteria in your mouth, due to the constant and consistent ingestion of food. This food leads to plaque buildup, which acts to feed the bacteria. The bacteria then multiple and grow, and affect your health by suppressing the production of the proteins that protect you against viral infection.
What else can I do to reduce bacteria in my mouth?
Having crowded teeth and misaligned teeth, will result in more plaque and bacterial trapping. The ultimate solution to dealing with this is to straighten your teeth and get rid of the crowding. P. gingivalis love crowded spaces and that is where we see much of the bone loss. You can consider straightening your teeth with invisalign or with braces. At Sbenati Dentistry we provide invisalign services and our patients absolutely love them due to the ability to eat normally without sacrifice.
Teeth Whitening can also improve your digestive and oral health by fighting deep, penetrating stains and bacteria deep within your mouth, especially with older teeth.
The overall most important advice is to stay on top of your dental hygiene, appointments, and exams. Dental hygienists have access to dental instruments, performing deep cleaning within your gums to remove plaque and tartar that you won’t be able to reach by yourself.

What is Considered a Dental Emergency in 2022?
A dentist performing dental surgery.
If you clicked on this article, maybe you’re having a dental emergency or perhaps you’re curious about what is considered a dental emergency in 2022.
An emergency dentist appointment is applicable for any concern that needs immediate attention because of unbearable pain. Possibly you’re losing a tooth, requiring dental surgery like an extraction, you’re in severe pain, your tooth has become infected, or another urgent situation that requires immediate scheduling.
If you are in need of an emergency dentist near London, Ontario, contact Sbenati Dentistry (519-474-0220) immediately so we can help.
When should I see an emergency dentist?
According to the Canadian Dental Association, a dental emergency can be a toothache, chipped/broken tooth, knocked out tooth, badly bitten lip or tongue, lost filling, or having something stuck between your teeth. You should see an emergency dentist if you are losing a tooth, and depending on the severity of the issue (bleeding, inflammation, or severe pain), it can definitely be considered a dental emergency. Severe pain in your mouth may be caused by bleeding of an oral cavity, a root canal, a chipped or broken tooth, and/or a tooth infection that may be growing into an abscess.
There are many other reasons for a dental emergency, which likely will fall into the categories of infection, severe pain, or tooth loss.
What happens at an emergency dentist appointment?
Dental emergencies can sneak up on you faster and sneakier than your dog or cat when you wake up in the morning. For example, if you need to get a tooth extracted your dentist will try to save it with a root canal or crown and only pull the tooth if it is absolutely necessary. But you could wake up one day and end up losing a tooth as a result of a dental emergency. Sometimes an emergency dental appointment will be needed when wisdom teeth become severely impacted and there is too much pain to wait for the next available appointment. In other situations, a painful tooth may not be a sign of anything serious. It could simply mean a quick filling or cavity cleaning due to food being caught in a tight crevice.
When they do happen – don’t worry. Give us a call at (519) 474-0220 immediately so we can see you that same day to address your dental emergency.
Upon calling Sbenati Dentistry in London, Ontario:
1. You will talk with one of our dental experts about the severity of your pain and they will schedule you in ASAP.
2. We will perform an x-ray to identify the pain source and to determine if it can be treated right away, or receive a diagnosis to determine the quickest way of treating the issue.

A dental emergency can also occur without significant pain as a result of a chipped tooth, losing a crown or filling, a mouth sore, repairs of a bridge, dentures, or another issue that can quickly become worse if not treated properly.
Conclusion (Don’t wait – call Sbenati Dentistry)

Why does gum disease lead to premature babies?
A mother worried about her pregnancy because of her gum disease.
Did you know that pregnant women that suffer from gum disease are increasingly likely to give birth to low-weight preterm babies? According to research from the University of Sydney, even mild gingivitis can cause a premature pregnancy.
This news is even more concerning as 70% of mothers are at risk after factoring in pregnancy’s sugar cravings, hormonal changes, and frequent vomiting (which creates acid that damages your teeth).
Why is this the case?
Untreated oral infections can cause or worsen existing inflammation throughout the body including the placenta. The dangers of gingivitis can certainly be enhanced during this period, as some mothers are in so much pain that they’ll go weeks without brushing their teeth. One condition in particular that pregnant women can develop is called hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) which is particularly concerning as it can cause patients to vomit over 30 times per day. The gastric acid that forms can erode tooth enamel and raise the risk of tooth decay and gum disease. During pregnancy, your hormones will constantly be changing constantly which can lead to periodontitis, gingivitis, and infection to the bone that holds your teeth in place.
What is the solution (A consistent oral hygiene routine)?
Although many women may think dental treatments are unsafe during pregnancy it’s quite the opposite as many pregnant women tend to have unhealthy gums caused by plaque build-up leading to cavities. It’s Important for all pregnant women to remain extra diligent in their oral health routine during this time by brushing their tongues, flossing between each tooth, and using a fluoride mouthwash. Being consistent and strict with your dental hygiene can seriously make a world of difference in impacting your baby’s health!
Best Practices during pregnancy:
Since some women get swollen, sore, and bleeding gums during pregnancy it is very important to know how to take care of them. The best plan of attack during pregnancy is to be extra diligent in your oral hygiene routine.
Ask your dentist about different procedures they may advise you to wait until after your pregnancy to have done i.e. certain x-rays
Brush your teeth twice a day
Floss between each tooth daily
Schedule a check-up in your first trimester to have your oral health checked and teeth cleaned
Rinse your mouth with water or fluoride mouthwash after every time you vomit to reduce the impact of the acid, then brush 30 minutes later
Cut down on sugar and focus on finding comfort foods that are accessible and healthy for your baby and teeth
If you’re planning on getting pregnant in the future it may be best to get a dental check-up ahead of time to see if there is anything that needs to get done especially since they can worsen significantly in 9 months
Strengthen your gums and teeth by straightening your teeth if they’re crooked with Invisalign, or improving your digestive health and enamel strength with Teeth Whitening
Conclusion:
Your pregnancy is going to be one of the best experiences of your life and being consistent with a great oral hygiene routine can drastically decrease your risk of getting gum disease or reduce the impact if you already have symptoms.
