Above 15C you can expect a Coefficient of Performance (COP) of 4/4.5, this means you put 1kWh of electricity in, you get 4/4.5 kWh of heat out, worst case is when temperatures are between +2 and -2C, at this point any moisture in the air freezes onto the heat exchanger and the system has to integrate a defrost cycle, this brings the COP down to 2.5, past -2 and all the way to -15/20 efficiency increases again slightly as defrost cycles are not often required because air humidity drops. The figure which is most important is Seasonal Coefficient of Performance (SCOP) this is the efficiency of the system over a year and takes into account the highs and lows, here we can expect 3-3.5, anything above 3 is when systems become cheaper to run than gas boilers. So in short, super cheap to run most of the time, but expensive to run some of the time, overall it will be cheaper. Unfortunately, most people do not know how much gas and oil they use each day, the energy companies spread usage out over the year which gives a false impression of actual winter heating consumption. Being electric, and the fact most people have smart meters, you can see exactly how much the system has used every day instantly. What often happens is people will see a reading from a particularly cold day, lets say £15 in electric and immediately work out that it will cost thousands or pounds a year to run at that cost per day. There will be some days that the system costs a lot to run, but those are made up by the days its costs a lot less to run, hold fast and see what the system has actually cost to run in a year, don’t fixate on the bad days.

The result is more consistent air temperatures throughout the property, less cold spots and ultimately overall running costs of an average of about 10-15% less than a gas boiler.
🤔 Will the house stay warm with cooler radiators? The lower the flow temperature of the water going round the radiators, the cheaper a heat pump will be to run. Often people get obsessed with radiators being hot, when the most important factor is room temperature, if the room is warm enough its irrelevant whether the radiators are hot. So it could be possible to turn down the flow temperature by 2-5 degrees and still maintain, room temperature. This will often mean that the outside unit has to run for longer to maintain the temperature, but overall the running cost will be less. It’s better to have it running low and slow, rather than fast and hot!

A heat pump uses a complex control system designed to maximise efficiency and offer versatility, there are lots of parameters which can be altered, if not done correctly it will adversely affect performance.
