either they were distracted (maybe, the most likely candidate (for me) is lestat. we see him waver, go off script where others arent expecting, and have to be fed his lines- which he recites vacantly, robotically. someone else in his skin, maybe?)

louis is remembering her last words to him, her whispered rage and threats just quiet enough for him and madeline, and gives her the gravitas he thinks she deserves? the impact her words had on him, given to the audience that killed her?

option A is definitely possible, that the judges were preoccupied with a vampire as powerful as they are (maybe moreso, if he'd drunk from akasha at this time. but we dont know if he did or if thats something armand or louis inserted as an excuse for why lestat DIDNT die that night.) and couldn't focus on her. but it doesn't really make sense with how violently the judges had their brains stirred.

option B is more in line with how louis tells people things. he hides the truths that are ugly and painful and upsetting. (paul couldnt have been Just Sick, it had to be lestat. louis wasnt a bad partner, lestat did everything on his own because lestat is a Bad Person and louis is Not That Bad. hes not a bad father to claudia (which, like, he astronomically is. he loved her yes but ooo man is he bad at being a dad. again: later rant) (that happens a lot sawrry)
