SMALL ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Girl in Red
Written by Ely F. in collaboration with Jazz M.
Over the course of 2018, a new artist has emerged from the depths of a bedroom pop sea; Girl in Red (or Marie, a 19 year-old from Norway) has amassed over 30k subscribers on YouTube and she’s only getting bigger and better.
Though her identity remains on anonymous side, her lyrics are personal and her sound is breathtakingly unique. Listening to her music almost feels like cracking open someone’s diary and reading what’s inside; she doesn’t hide behind anything when she’s singing.
Girl in Red approaches her songs with a raw honesty. Her simple acceptance of herself, her intents, and the wants she conveys in her lyrics may seem blunt—but the light shed on a teenage girl’s reality is done in an utterly refreshing way that highlights insecurities, relationships, and mental health issues.
The artist has constructed beats that are relatable, but not in a way that’s obvious or obnoxious. Summer Depression, I Wanna Be Your Girlfriend, and Girls are bops that are more on the rough side of pop, with emotion that seeps through clearly and intensely.
It’s no question that in this day and age, Girl in Red is increasing in terms of relevancy, and we can’t wait to see what more she has to share with the world.
