The Quest for Buddhism (105)
Buddhist cosmology
Panchangika – Mastery of the 5 mental factors to resist the 5 hindrances(Ref)
Mental factors (Skt: caitasika, Pali: cetasika), is a component and function of the mind and spirit in Buddhism.
In the Southern Tradition of Theravada Buddhism, in accordance with the Abhidhammattha Sangaha, there are a total of 52 mental factors. The Abhidhamma (Buddhist psychology) states that the practice of the 5 mental factors in that list in opposition to the five hindrances is the practice of the Rupa Jhanas (Ref1). The general term for each of these stages in Sanskrit is ‘Panchangika’ (lit. five branches), and the types are as follows :
Vitakka - Application of thought
Vicāra – Examining (Subtle thought)
Pīti – Rapture
Sukha – Ease, Happiness, or Bliss
Ekaggatā - One-pointedness (tranquility of mind), but also "unification of mind."
The Ekaggatā (one-pointedness) within the Panchangika (mastery of 5 mental factors) is the main body of samadhi as a state of deepened concentration in jhanas. The process of removing the other 4  panchangika step by step, while guarding against from the five hindrances and other vexations, and finally bringing it to the strengthened state of Ekaggatā, 'one-pointedness (tranquility of mind)' alone, is the Rupa Jhanas.
The eighth, the right path (Pali: sammā-samādhi, Skt: samyak-samādhi), which the Buddha teaches in the Eightfold Path (Ref2), is the attainment of this Rupa Jhanas.

Time to start on season 3! Like we all agreed, this is gonna be a more lowkey, full-season liveblog rather than an episodic one.
As previously mentioned, season 3 is the season I'm most heavily spoiled on! I know Mei has the Smadhi Fire. I know Red Son (used to?) have it. I know about the training sequence (which, seeing how I ship these two, you're gonna hear a LOT about) and I thought I heard Monkey King got mindnapped by Lady Bone Demon?
Anyway. Because of that fun fact, we get a seasonal liveblog instead of episodes. So we can get to the stuff I don't know faster!

Hi there, lotus prince!
Question, are you planning on using the Samadhi fire to achieve your goal? Because I think you know that the fire is in fact something that cannot be put out easily, and is able to burn down anything it touches. Not only that but I’ve been reading around some mythology books and found out that you were able to use the fire. (Or at least a part of it)
Anyways that’s all I’m asking, have a blessed day ^^!!
Am I
Planning on using
The Smadhi fire?
Is this a joke?
Do I look like Sun Wukong?
Do I have brown fur, a tail, and no Goddamn impulse control???
NO I'M NOT DOING THAT!
WHY would I do that??????
It's completely uncontrollable and unpredictable. The only reason that mortal girl survived was because of her specific heritage, but even then, the flames started to take a toll after only a few weeks.
Do you have any idea how hard it was to seal it away again???
I'm not touching those flames ever again.
Besides, the Emperor is much weaker than he appears. The fire will not be necessary.

Starsfic: You know what I hope for in S4? Red talking about the change between Lunar New Year and the S3 specials that you pointed out, knowing he can trust Long Xiaojiao and Qi Xiaotian to help him if he needs it. I don't know what the context could possibly be but I want this trio to talk about it (maybe with more of Red's soft looks to both of those idiots).
Please don’t put Red Son in the background for season 4 onwards LMK I am literally begging you
Going off this, a part of me was thinking about if there would ever be a subtle call back to DBK’s “why would I trust you?!” line that he said whilst possessed by LBD. Red Son makes a lot of his own independent decisions and doesn’t get a lot of encouragement on a daily basis, but even though he is afraid of disappointing people, I have the idea that he’s been raised to have enough faith in his own abilities in order to pull off what he sets his mind to no matter how underestimated he is (which he has been, immensely), as he teaches Long Xiaojiao to have faith in herself it comes to the Smadhi Fire — which also shows he has learned to extend that faith to other people and helping them with that same amount of determination. Maybe there will be instances in season 4 where he’s regarded as untrustworthy or ineffective (maybe Erlang Shen or some other celestials if they play a larger role, which is my working theory rn), but now he has new friends at his back who stand up for him and who he doesn’t need to constantly prove himself to, having real reinforcement at his side from this point onwards. Idk ahahuahahah

Reduce, Reuse and Recycle
Tumblr media
Figure 1: The Importance of the Three R’s (De Luca, 2017).
How do we make the world and our environment a better place to live in?  we can do so by following the three R’s in our day-to-day lives; Reduce, reuse and recycle.
We live in such a fast paced world that we forget or oversee the simple things in life.   One of the things that might be small but effects the environment on a bigger level is the three R’s. People are in such a hurry and tell themselves it is okay, it’s just this once, when they throw things in the garbage instead of recycling it because they in such a hurry. But what happens when a billion people do the same exact thing? “I am in a hurry, just this once”. This has a huge impact on our environment. When the weather is bad outside we complain, not realising that it is because of our actions that is causing global warming. We are damaging our home and the home for future generations.
Smadhi Artemisa tells us by simply making every day cleaning products at home we can reduce, reuse and recycle. By reusing  grocery bags and composting. Finally by buying recyclable products and recycling them instead of throwing them in the garbage (Artemisa, 2017). Following these three simple rules we can make our environment a better place to live in. We can also teach our children the importance of the three R’s on our environment. Show them how a small thing as composting can make a big difference.
The 15 minute video in figure 2 is a ted talk by Gail Wilson-Giarratano on “the Tao of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” talks about the Tao of reducing, reusing, recycling and the impact it has. She also talks about how it is also more than just the three 3 R’s and how it about leadership, possibility and people who care for our environment (TEDx Talks, 2017)

I believe that the small things we do to reduce, reuse and recycle has a huge impact. It’s time for us to take a stand and live a greener life not only for us but for the future generation.

Samadhi
Tumblr media
5/25/2017
Meditation is a journey to equanimity, possibilities, non-attachment and enlightenment.  I enjoy this journey every step of the way.  At 560 hours after today’s session of 3 hours and 9 minutes I captured this.
What is samadhi?
It's hard to describe.  First of all it is not one and done.  It's a series of events with the intense feeling of joy lasting more than 2 hours.   Near the end, the mind gets weaker and weaker ending up hanging around, no longer my master.  It's like getting lost in the ocean of light in the state of ecstacy.
I felt no discomfort from sitting in a tiny chair for a long time.  As the concentration deepened, my spine kept stretching and stretching along with the navel pulling in slightly towards the spine.  The spine took a pause now and then from stretching, usually when the mind wandered.  Finally the spine kept lengthening in a series of stretches until eventually my rear end slightly lifted off the seat.  I then felt my back pressing against the backrest of the chair and gradually sliding upward, feeling suspended with my hands pressing tightly together, full of tingling sensations while the tip of the tongue kept pressing into the roof of the mouth, sticking together like glue.  I meditated with the tongue touching the palate today.
Verbal thinking process still went on in the early stages of samadhi.  As samadhi deepened the verbal thinking process lessened.
Moving up the samadhi ladder
I have been meditating mostly on subtle objects mainly “OM” (chanting in silence) for some time.  That puts me in level 3 samadhi, savichara.
Per Patanjali samadhi comprises 7 stages: savitarka (reasoning), nirvitarka, savichara (reflection), nirvichara, sa-ananda (the pure joy or blissful), sa-asmita (the pure I-am-ness)  and asamprajnata (“beyond higher knowledge, a very high stage in which there is no object of concentration; rather the yogi’s consciousness is merged into absolute consciousness, Purusha.”)
Getting there is half the fun
Getting to a state of samadhi is like transitioning into a challenging twisting yoga pose.  It is little by little, inching toward to the final form.  We may need to shake our body a little before inching deeper and deeper into the pose.  Meditation is like that.  It’s a series of little steps.  When the mind wanders we may slide backward before moving ahead again in a slow progressive manner.  When we get to the end it is blissful.
Involving all the senses while concentrating on the object helps speed up the process.  As the mind continues to flow to “OM” I might concentrate on smelling, for example.  Early on I smell nothing, neutral smell.  After the concentration deepens I will start experienceing sweet smell, maybe perfume like.  That is a sign that I reach a state of smadhi.
Breathing
In samadhi breathing becomes effortless.  Sometimes I stopped breathing when concentrating hard on the meditation object, followed by a big gasping for air.  Often times the leg muscles tighten spasmodically, causing the chair to swivel when gasping for air.
