4x6 spoilers so i'll put the description below the cut

prodigal son is if river went willingly with frank from the restaurant as sort of going undercover. river agrees to go with him if he promises to leave his grandfather alone so both Marcus and Patrice live.

River leaves with Frank and Patrice to go to a compound somewhere in Switzerland, Le Ruisseau. Frank starts to test River's skills, hand to hand combat, shooting, etc. And he's put through whatever tests he missed as a child like the cellar test (from the book, on their 12th birthday each child is locked in the cellar with no natural light with only a candle. each morning they were given a single bread roll and a water and reminded that they can be released if only they ask. Bertrand lasted only 17 days, Patrice a month and Yves two), and purging attachments. Eventually his "final test" will bring him to London and back into the slow horses orbit.

“Where are we going?” River asked when he could stand the silence no longer.  “You’ll see,” Frank said.  “Or you could just fucking tell me–” River hadn’t seen Patrice even move; he just felt searing pain as the words he was going to say died painfully in his throat. He tried to breathe, but air stubbornly refused to reach his lungs as River doubled over.  “Is he alright?” the woman across the row asked, concern clouding her features.  “My son gets a bit of motion sickness,” Frank answered. “He’ll be fine. Thank you.” My son. River would have scoffed at the words if he could actually form some of his own.
