Is my dad smart or lucky when it comes to our vehicles? via /r/cars
Is my dad smart or lucky when it comes to our vehicles?
A bit of background: our family has had two cars forever, a '90 f150 (5 speed manual straight 6) and a '94 explorer (5 speed manual v6). The explorer has around 350k miles and the truck has about 250k. Neither leaks oil, or has had any major maintenance issues since we've bought them, except for some electrical Gremlins, ECUs, and air conditioners.
Now, we live in Texas. It gets really hot in the summer. Because of this, dad has always put in super heavy oil (20W-50) which is way out of spec for both vehicles. He also uses a ton of additives like slick50, mystery oil, etc etc.
He claims that his practices are the reason they've lasted so long without any issues. I claim that it's simply his religious oil changing schedule that has kept the vehicles going, DESPITE him using additive crap and too-thick oil, and that if anything, all that crap is hurting the engines more than helping.
The way I see it, there's 3 possible scenarios:
Dad has been actively hurting the vehicles with the oil and additives, but it has been more than offset by the frequency of oil changes, so the cars have lasted despite his efforts to kill them.
He's not hurting anything, but he's certainly not helping. He's just wasting money on additives and thick oil.
He's a genius and we should all be heeding his advice in hot climates.
My gut tells me it's either 1 or 2, but to him, it's 3, and the vehicles lasting so long is a testament to that. Which do you think it is? Is too-heavy oil hurting, helping, or having a neutral effect? Ditto for the additives?
