"Εδώ που τα λέμε, ελάχιστες ιδέες μπορούν να θεωρηθούν τόσο τρελές όσο η πιο αγαπημένη μου ασχολία, το τρέξιμο. Είναι δύσκολο. Είναι επώδυνο. Είναι κάποιες φορές επικίνδυνο. Οι ανταμοιβές συνήθως είναι λίγες και καθόλου εγγυημένες. Όταν τρέχεις σ' έναν οβάλ στίβο ή σ' έναν άδειο δρόμο, ή σ' ένα μονοπάτι στο βουνό λέω εγώ, δεν έχεις πραγματικό προορισμό που θα μπορούσε να δικαιολογήσει πλήρως την προσπάθεια. Η ίδια η πράξη γίνεται ο προορισμός. Δεν είναι απλώς ότι δεν υπάρχει γραμμή τερματισμού. Είναι ότι και την γραμμή τερματισμού την ορίζεις εσύ!. Οποίες απολαύσεις ή οφέλη αποκομίζεις από το τρέξιμο πρέπει να τα βρεις μέσα σου. Καθετί εξαρτάται από το πώς το διατυπώνεις, πως το πουλάς στον εαυτό σου. Κάθε δρομέας το ξέρει αυτό. Τρέχεις, τρέχεις, χιλιόμετρα επί χιλιομέτρων, και δεν ξέρεις ποτέ πραγματικά γιατί. Λες στον εαυτό σου ότι τρέχεις προς κάποιον στόχο, κυνηγάς την έξαψη, αλλά στην πραγματικότητα τρέχεις επειδή η εναλλακτική λύση, το να σταματήσεις, σε τρομάζει μέχρι θανάτου. Έτσι λέω στον εαυτό μου, άσε τους άλλους να λένε την ιδέα σου τρελή.. εσύ απλώς προχώρα. Μη σταματάς. Μην σκεφτείς καν να σταματήσεις ώσπου να φτάσεις εκεί, και μη σκέφτεσαι πολύ που είναι το <<εκεί>>. "Κοιτάζω προς τα κάτω. Ο φόβος διαπερνά την σπονδυλική μου στήλη, ηλεκρίζοντας τα άκρα μου, εστιάζοντας το μυαλό μου με ακρίβεια λέιζερ στις συντεταγμένες κάθε εκατοστού του κορμιού μου. Ο φόβος είναι κάποιες φορές αποπνικτικός. Όμως κάθε φορά που με πνίγει, αδειάζω τις σκέψεις μου, εστιάζω την προσοχή μου στον πάτο του γκρεμού από κάτω μου, πιέζω τον εαυτό μου να αντικρίσει τον πιθανό χαμό μου και στη συνέχεια να αναγνωρίσει απλώς την ύπαρξη μου. Η αίσθηση στη κορυφή είναι συναρπαστική, η αδρεναλίνη κυλάει στο σώμα. Είμαι ακίνητος, συγκεντρωμένος, αφουγκράζομαι τον άνεμο και κοιτάζω τις απέναντι κορυφές, κοιτάζω μέχρι την "άκρη" της γης - γελαώ με τα σύννεφα και το φως. Είναι σημαντικό για τον καθένα να συνειδητοποιεί την κάθε στιγμή, αυτή την στιγμή που μας χωρίζει από τον θάνατο, έτσι εξαφανίζει την κάθε ανόητη, εύθραυστη, επιφανειακή αξία της ζωής".
