Channelers - Ringing In An Open Sky / Skyminds - Echoes On The Shore

A double shot of greatness from the Inner Islands label. Channelers' latest sees the Seattle-based label's main guy Sean Conrad pursuing inner peace via cathedral-like tones, his celestial dulcimer and EWI (electronic wind instrument) floating, echoing, and yeah, ringing like bells, with only the barest of bass lines keeping things tethered to earth. All of the Channelers releases are worth your time, but Ringing In An Open Sky feels like the most crystallized/crystalline refinement of Conrad's vision yet. Totally beautiful.

Next, we've got Skyminds' Echoes On The Shore, Sean's collab with Michael Henning (AKA Selaroda), which has a similarly meditative style, but with a bit more rhythmic anchoring, as the duo locates mellow/majestic grooves and gorgeous melodies — you'll definitely think of Popol Vuh at their prettiest at times. Even if these songs began as loose improvs, there's an inner logic and intricacy that highlights the easygoing mind-meld Conrad and Henning share. Tragically, Henning passed away earlier this year; Echoes is a more than fitting epitaph.

Skyminds - Echoes On The Shore

Skyminds is the collaborative musical duo of Michael Henning (Selaroda, DJ Megasoup) and Sean Conrad (Channelers, Ashan), now based in Berkeley, CA and Seattle, WA respectively. Echoes On The Shore is their fourth album and follows their 2022 release Terra Preta on Not Not Fun. This is perhaps their most reflective and meditative collection to date. This album has less of the divergent eclecticism and dynamic intensity that has characterized their previous releases, instead opting to limit the range to mellower grooves and colorful atmospherics. That said, this work doesn’t skimp on the rich textures and abundant instrumentation that has been integral to their sound thus far.

As has been true from the start, improvisation is at the heart of this music, with every piece starting as a spontaneous dialogue. And those extemporaneous tendencies are an intrinsic quality to Skyminds’ work; everything is grown from those seeds. The most potent parts are stitched together with as much humanity, emotion, and imperfection intact as possible. This is followed by further improvisations and edits piled on top until completion. However, the track “Springtime,” recorded live at the incredible Vintage Synthesizer Museum (before its move down south to Los Angeles), is the first time an un-edited improvisation has made its way onto a Skyminds album. Ultimately, Echoes On The Shore is a monument to their friendship and a deeply shared musical connection spanning the last 10 years.

Welp, I sure had some fun with this one, but I reckon it's time to call it quits on Facility 01, the all-android colony. It was nice exploring a modpack which I didn't put much thought into in the past, and there's certainly more I could do with it. Experiment with SkyMind fuckery and eventually produce my own AI persona cores, but frankly, I'm just not interested. I'm actually quite sick of robotic colonists, as strange as that sounds. Hell, half of them don't even feel emotions, and none of them have traits! There was a lot less drama in this playthrough than in past playthroughs, and I don't like that in my RimWorld games. For a nice send-off to this fully-publicized colony, here are some projects from the tail-end of the playthrough, as well as some special thanks.

A brand-new rec/dining room. Comes with the only wood flooring in the entire colony, since wood is more precious than gold in the permafrost.

The large & luxurious new temple. It never saw much action, just some role changes and one relic out of three. I'd estimate it took around...4000-9000 steel to build. ~400 plasteel, 225 gold, and 700 uranium

Special thanks to Drone ID 104. Who was planned to be the leader of Facility 01 before it was found out that drones cannot hold such roles. Regardless, they played a huge part in the colony's development, acting as the chief researcher and adventurer (the guy that always went out on missions)

Drone ID 638. Who as the right-hand to 104 was the chief surgeon and doctor of the colony. With dual scalpel arms, they installed at least 90% of all the advanced body parts seen on the colony population today.

Willow 'Progress' ID 913, for marking a turning point in the development of Facility 01 as the first Tier Three android, and sticking it out through the first lonely weeks of being the only sapient colonist among emotionless drones that regularly butchered humans without a thought.

Aria ID 677. For being such a diligent sniper when the colony needed their skill. As well as being such a good friend to Progress keeping them company while more T3s were being produced.

And finally to Merlin, the T4 Android. Simply for marking the endpoint of the colony. For being the living achievement of robotic supremacy and accomplishment. Though there were more places to go after your conception, I'm taking this as a valid colony ending anyway.

And that's it, that's the end of Facility 01
