Hi, sorry I don't mean to bother you. It's just I saw the flag on your icon and as of lately I have started questioning if I might be trans and I don't know how to deal with the it. This is the first time I'm saying this outside of my head and I really don't know what to do.
sorry for the late response, i was away from home for most of the day and couldn’t type out an appropriate answer to this on my phone! but. first of all: you are valid and you are not alone! every out and proud trans person has been where you are right now, and a lot of cis people have been there too. questioning your gender is a much more common experience than most people think.
that said, it can still be really scary. when i was questioning mine, the first person i told about it wasn’t a friend or family member; it was a stranger on the internet, and i talked to them anonymously. exact same boat you’re in right now. so i totally understand the fear and confusion you’re probably dealing with at the moment, and i’m really proud of you for reaching out anyway.
(continued below the cut)
i'm not sure how much advice you want here, or if you just wanted to say it, but i’m going to give you a whole bunch of stuff just in case. feel free to ignore it if you like, but i hope it’s helpful!
first off: it’s okay to not have answers right now. it took me months to be okay with calling myself trans, even though i have, like, a Textbook trans experience and i’ve been passing for male since i was seven. and even after i was confident in being a trans man, i realized that i was actually genderqueer, too. i’ve been openly trans for four and a half years and i still don’t fully understand myself, and i changed my labels just a few months ago.
because of that, i think the best way to try to work through questioning your gender is asking what would make you happy, not who you Really Are. like, instead of asking yourself “am i really a man” or whatever is applicable to your situation, asking “do i want this surgery” “do i want these pronouns” or stuff like that can be more illuminating. it can also feel less scary to say “i want these pronouns and i want to look like this” than it is to say “i AM this”. you see what i’m saying here?
those questions can also help you sort of accidentally find the right label. obviously no trans identity is bound to a specific set of pronouns or a specific aesthetic, but for me, knowing how i wanted to look and be spoken about helped me settle on the trans man label, and the way that what i want has changed helped me pick new ones.
also, i would highly advise looking for trans people online to look up to. i don’t know how you currently identify or what identities you’re considering, but for me, i used to watch skylar kergil’s old transition updates religiously (skylarkeleven on youtube; he has a lot of old videos detailing his experience with hrt). i don’t follow transmasc creators as much as i used to, because i’ve found that i don’t need the reassurance as much anymore, but it lowkey saved my life when i was around 14. i don’t know of very many transfem creators or youtubers who talk extensively about being trans, since i never needed support for an experience i wasn’t having, but there’s lots out there. if anyone is reading this and knows of some, drop them in the replies!
i’m gonna end it here because i could ramble about trans stuff forever, but i hope at least some of this stuff is helpful? and you can always, always message me, anon or not, to talk about this stuff. i have lots of specific knowledge on transmasc transition and what it can look like, and i’m happy to talk about my personal experiences with gender. i hope you figure out what will make you happy; you deserve that.
