Misdirected Mail

Cory almost enjoyed it when a now-familiar brown owl flew over to the Ravenclaw table and landed right on top of his plate of waffles these days. It was just too cute not to immediately love, with its spotted, fluffy feathers and large, panicky eyes. Much like its owner, he thought as he gave it a little nudge to push it off his waffles. He plucked one small round feather from the maple syrup and tossed it aside.

He stood, picked up the owl, careful not to crush its tiny body, and made his way across the Great Hall to the Gryffindor table. He bounced a little when he caught sight of a small blonde boy slowly working through a pile of toast slathered with strawberry jam. Like always, every morning.

Cory coughed to get his attention, and the boy jumped almost a foot into the air. He turned around, and upon seeing his own owl clutched in a first year Ravenclaw’s hands, looking bashful (if owls could look bashful), his eyes widened, and he swallowed his bite of toast as quickly as possible.

Cory waited patiently, albeit a bit awkwardly.

When he’d finished, the blonde boy took the owl from his grasp, tapping it on the head reproachfully. “Skops! Are you blind? I’m your owner, not him.” He looked up at Cory. “Sorry about him. Again. He seems to like you.”

Cory smiled. “Skops? I was wondering what his name was.”

The boy’s ears turned a bright shade of red. “My dad named him. ‘Skops.’ It means ‘owl’ in ancient Greek, so... my owl’s name is Owl.” He looked down at the owl, who was staring up at the boy with wide yellow-green eyes as if to say “Who, me?”

Cory tipped his head to the side, eyeing the embarrassed first year. “If your owl thinks I’m his owner, then maybe we should share custody. I don’t have an owl, unfortunately; just a cat.”

The boy stared up at him with large green eyes, looking very much like his pet. “I don’t even know your name.”

“Cory Lovegood. You?”

The boy was hesitant for a moment. “Alexander Warne. Not Warren. Warne. W-A-R-N-E.”

Cory got the feeling that he’d recited this speech many times before.

“And you can call me Alec if you want,” the boy continued, the redness spreading from his ears to his cheeks, “all my friends do. Not that I have that many friends, but, er... never mind. I’m rambling. I do that when I’m nervous. Either that or I just clamp up. I won’t talk for hours.... Oh, see, I’m doing it again, I’m rambling.”

Cory grinned. He leaned down to stroke Skops’ downy feathers, watching for Alec’s reaction. He didn’t push his hand away, at least, so that was good. He still seemed at a loss for words, but the coloring in his cheeks was starting to die down, revealing a scattering of freckles across his nose. “Alexander. All right.”

Alec shrugged sheepishly and patted Skops’ head with prideful delight. His smile looked like the sun breaking through a foggy window.

A/N: I just wrote this to get out of a horrible writing slump, so that’s why it’s kinda sloppy and short, haha. 

And I just really like writing Alec from Cory’s POV, let me be.

Got cheesy with that last line, whoops.

First, thank you everyone for being my friend. Even tho i don't talk to some of you as much as others, just know that you're still in my heart, and that i'm grateful for your existence and that we had a chance to meet :)

Second, thank you everyone for watching me grow this year. i feel like i've grown as both and artist and a writer, even tho i still have some stuff i need to improve on :') you all supported me this year, even tho i've only rlly been here since january. thank you all

funny how people on here think i'm not intimidating at all but irl my friends thought i looked terrifying when they first met me lol

me remembering that one time i had to write and publish and actual book for a school project so i created a retelling of romeo and juliet except it was a gay love story and both romeo and juliet (<- who i turned into julien) were both doomed by the narrative and were never supposed to fall in love since their families were on opposite sides of a kingdom and it was a literal masterpiece but when i turned it in for the teacher to read (it had a cover and was laminated and bound and all that) she kind of had a mental break down and said "your writing is excellent and exceeded the standards, but it is too inappropriate for someone your age to read" (i didn't know if the 'inappropriate' part she was talking about was me turning it gay or the amount of blood and gore in the book)
