3 Tips for Celebrating National Self-Care Awareness Month with Skincare
The beginning of September brings a few lovely changes; the leaves start to change colors, the back-to-school season officially kicks off, and fall trends begin to pop up everywhere you look. With so many wonderful transitions on the horizon, it’s easy to see why September is National Self-Care Awareness Month. As you settle into new rituals, prepare for the cozy fall season, and style your favorite fall cardigans, embrace this season of self-care by refreshing your skincare rituals. Here’s what you need to know about merging skincare and self-care this September. Why Focus on Skincare During September? As the seasons change, your skin's needs and conditions also change, making early fall the perfect time to refresh your skincare regimen. While your skin might crave mattifying, non-comedogenic products during humid summer months, autumn weather might call for visibly hydrating products. Besides, skincare and self-care go together like crisp fall mornings and pumpkin spice lattes. Not only can the right luxurious skincare products help you feel peaceful and relaxed during National Self-Care Awareness Month, but taking care of your skin is also important for your overall well-being. Wearing SPF, regularly visiting your dermatologist, and using high-quality products can help you stay on top of your skincare game. How Can You Refresh Your Skincare Regimen? The perfect skincare regimen is tailored to your unique complexion and comprised of high-quality products—plus, it makes you feel confident in your skin. Here are three ways to refresh your skincare rituals: 1. Become an Exfoliation Expert While everyone’s skin has a unique tolerance for exfoliation, this step is important. Exfoliation can help buff away dead skin, which helps all of your other products to go onto your skin. Using a luscious scrub made with natural ingredients is a relaxing self-care experience. To refresh your regimen with a step that promotes product absorption and may help reveal a supple, radiant complexion, use an emollient apricot exfoliating scrub up to three times a week after cleansing. For an extra touch of self-care, turn your exfoliation process into a gentle face massage and enjoy the lovely aroma of your favorite scrub. 2. Nourish Your Skin Collagen, elastin, and amino acids are some of the foundational blocks of your skin. Staying hydrated, eating a balanced diet, and using effective, science-backed skincare products are among the best things you can do for the overall nourishment of your skin. Regular use of a concentrated pro collagen serum, an elastin-infused eye cream, or an amino acid-infused enzyme moisturizer can help you address many skin concerns while nourishing your skin.
Tumblr media
3. Curate a Relaxing Ritual While the right skincare products are important, the key to reaping the benefits of luscious ingredients and visibly nourishing formulas is having a consistent skincare ritual. After all, consistency is key for both skincare and self-care! Be sure to determine which of your products are ideal for daily use, such as select moisturizers or serums, and which ones you should use less regularly, like an apricot scrub or mask.

Can Hair Loss Be Stopped?
Don’t Lose Hair Men and hair loss seems always to have been a losing combination. Although male pattern hair loss is very common—two out of three men will experience it—and is hardly ever associated with serious health risks, it’s hard to imagine a common condition that is met with more anxiety. But much of the stigma surrounding male hair loss is due to half-truths and exaggerations. So if you start noticing there’s not as much hair up there, don’t pull out the rest of it in worry—take our quiz below and learn what’s going on with your body and how you can slow the follicle fallout.
If you’re losing hair, it’s male pattern baldness. False. It’s true that for 95 percent of men who lose their hair, male pattern baldness, or androgenetic alopecia, is the culprit. With this condition, an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase converts testosterone to dihydro testosterone, a hormone that causes hair follicles to shut down hair production. Male pattern baldness can begin appearing in men in their 20s and usually progresses slowly from the front or apex of the scalp, or both. But male pattern baldness is not the only cause of male hair loss—and it’s important to talk to your physician or dermatologist to determine the cause, because it can point to certain health problems. For example, if your hair is falling out quickly and in small patches, it may be a sign of alopecia areata, an autoimmune disease in which the body attacks the hair. Stress can also lead to rapid hair loss. In these cases, the hair usually regrows after several months. Other causes include a severe ailment or major surgery; protein, vitamin B, or iron deficiencies; medication complications; or thyroid disease. It’s your mother’s fault. False. Male pattern baldness is a largely genetic characteristic that can be inherited from either your mother or your father. It’s even possible to acquire the hair-loss gene from both parents. In fact, the same gene also causes hair loss in women, although because of hormonal differences, women tend to lose their hair in small amounts all over their scalp. There’s hope. True. Here’s the good news: In many cases, male pattern baldness can be treated. In the early stages, many conventional physicians prescribe either minoxidil lotion, applied topically, or finasteride, taken orally. These medications have been shown to slow hair loss in many patients and, in some cases, cause hair to grow back. According to Robert Brodell, MD, professor of internal medicine in the dermatology section at Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine, complications associated with both drugs are minimal, but there are downsides. Not only are the medications expensive, but they only work for as long as you take them.
“I tell my patients that they are going to be on one of those medicines for 5 years or 10 years or 15 years, until they are married and have kids and don’t care anymore,”
says Brodell.
“And then when they stop their medicine, we fully expect them to start losing their hair again.”
Great strides are being made in the field of hair transplants, but like any invasive therapy, these procedures are expensive and time-consuming and should not be undertaken lightly. If surgery or drug therapies aren’t for you, a number of naturopathic remedies might offer similar results—without the high cost. Keith F. Zeitlin, ND, a naturopathic physician with a private practice in Connecticut, recommends the herbs saw palmetto (Serenoa repens) and stinging nettle root (Urtica dioica), and the supplement beta-sitosterol, which all appear to work similarly to conventional medicines by shutting down the enzyme 5-alpha reductase’s creation of dihydrotestosterone, the hormone that ceases hair production. “If we can inhibit that enzyme, we can actually inhibit hair loss,” says Zeitlin. (For more information, see “Herbs and Supplements for Hair Loss,” below.) Another option is mesotherapy, a treatment in which very short needles are used to inject homeopathic remedies; vitamins such as biotin; or conventional medicines such as minoxidil just underneath the surface of the scalp. “The skin is used as a natural time-release system,” says practitioner Harry Adelson, ND, a Utah-based pain-medicine specialist. “Whatever it is you are injecting remains in the area for up to a week and continually penetrates down into the deeper tissue.” You can live a hair-healthy lifestyle. True. Although there’s no apparent validity to the old wives’ tales that sexual activity or excessive hat wearing can cause hair loss, other lifestyle choices may indeed hurt your hair. In fact, it might make more sense to keep that hat on; a study conducted at the University Hospital of Zurich in Switzerland proposed that ultraviolet rays from the sun might injure hair follicles (Dermatology, 2003, vol. 207, no. 4). How you clean and care for your hair may also be a factor in hair loss. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, too many chemical treatments such as dying, straightening, and bleaching, as well as excessive washing, towel drying, and brushing, may weaken or damage your hair, causing it to break or fall out.
Those worried about hair loss should also reevaluate their diets. Zeitlin warns that very large doses of vitamin A can lead to vitamin A toxicity and eventual hair loss. He recommends his patients replace vitamin A-rich foods and saturated fats, which may also encourage hair loss, with green vegetables, whole grains, essential fatty acids, and other foods rich in hair-healthy vitamins and minerals such as zinc. What you drink may also play a role: According to a 2003 study, alcohol consumption may aggravate hair loss (British Journal of Dermatology, 2003, vol. 149, no. 6). Hair loss is a bad thing. False. Let’s not forget the cheapest, easiest, and safest treatment for male pattern hair loss: doing nothing at all. After all, hair loss is not usually a health concern and, despite what our culture may sometimes suggest, there’s nothing wrong with showing a little skin—on your head, that is. After all, look at Patrick Stewart, Bruce Willis, and Sean Connery. “I certainly wouldn’t recommend that anybody have their male pattern baldness treated who isn’t bothered by it,” says Brodell. “I’m losing my hair, and I’m not using any of these treatments.”

Summer-Ready Skincare: 6 Products You’re Sure to Love
If you’re starting to feel the warm embrace of early summer wrapping around your skin, it’s time to look at how you can seize the moment with your skincare products. Whether your main goal is protecting your skin with zinc oxide sunscreen or achieving a radiant glow with regular exfoliation, the following products may be the perfect supplements for all your sunny days ahead. It’s also a good guide for those who are a little obsessed with clean brands that primarily use natural ingredients.
Tumblr media
1. Refreshing Facial Toner
Toners help promote the appearance of hydration while leaving the skin feeling refreshed. These elixirs do wonders to help brighten the look of skin after cleansing (and remove any excess debris your cleanser didn’t get). You want your skin to feel quenched in the dry summer heat! A quick mist to your complexion throughout the day may give you a needed pick-me-up when things start to really heat up. Find a refreshing toner made for your skin type.
2. Easy, Clean Arnica Cream
Are you sore from working in the garden all day? For the ultimate in self-care, use a thoughtfully crafted natural arnica cream on tense or fatigued muscles. Arnica flower and invigorating menthol and eucalyptus extracts can help give your skin a pleasant cooling sensation. Pamper yourself with a product formulated with ingredients known to offer many benefits. When you can’t get to a massage appointment, unlock the power of a revitalizing arnica cream in the meantime.
3. Protective Zinc Oxide Sunscreen
You want a facial sunscreen that doesn’t leave a white cast on your face because you aren’t at summer camp anymore. Some of the best mineral sunscreens are formulated to protect your face from UV rays and feature antioxidant-rich botanicals that help improve the overall appearance of your skin. If there’s one product a dermatologist will say is a must-have, it’s sunscreen. As the last step in your daily skincare routine, apply a well-made zinc oxide sunscreen recommended for all skin types.
4. Scrumptious-Smelling Body Polish
Whether you like the smell of papayas and pineapples or the aroma of vanilla and brown sugar, there’s nothing quite like the indulgent experience of a well-made body polish. The best products feature clean ingredients and offer humectant properties to help the skin appear softer and smoother. Treat your senses (and your skin) to a gentle exfoliating product for the body.
5. Light Face Moisturizer
Effective moisturizing helps prevent the buildup of excess oil produced by your skin and it protects your overall visible skin health by giving it the daily moisture and nutrients it needs. Everyone may benefit from a lightweight moisturizer in the summer, whether you have oily, dry, or combination skin.
6. Green Tea Mask
Last but definitely not least, treat your skin to a little TLC with a green tea mask. Packed with antioxidants and other nourishing ingredients, a green tea and seaweed mask is the perfect way to refresh tired-looking summer skin. Simply smooth it on, relax, and let the mask work its magic while you sip on a refreshing iced tea and enjoy earned downtime.

All I Want for Christmas is Boobs (And Other Elective Procedures)
Tumblr media
Dear Santa,
I’ve been a really good girl this year. I know because I took a quiz on Cosmopolitan.com and it said so. Like most TV shows and Instagram posts and movies and advertisements, Cosmo also reminded me that I’ve got a lot of work to do in the new year if I want people to notice that I’m alive and hot.
Since improving one’s appearance often requires a lot of time, money, and effort, I’d love it if you could pull a few strings with your plastic surgeon, laser hair technician, and dermatologist. I may be broke, but I’m a decent person who deserves to feel pretty. So if you want me to stay on the nice list, please consider giving me the gift of:
Bigger lips — When I say my lips are thin, I’m talking angel hair pasta thin. You know that fish in the Bass Pro Shop logo? My lips are thinner. Even the Walmart discount smiley face has bigger lips than me, which is probably why he’s so effing smug. I just want your beautician to give me a little lip filler so that I can finally do things that other human women do like kiss and pucker and pout about my physical shortcomings.
Feminine toes — Although I have been blessed with my mother’s long, slender feet, I did not inherit her beautiful toes. I have my dad’s toes, which are large, bulbous, and covered in wispy black hairs that were once described by an ex as “deeply disturbing.” Perhaps your surgeon could reshape my toes to be more womanly or like that of a small boy. Feel free to give the toe hairs to your elves so they can knit them into sweaters or whatever.
Smooth skin — Every few weeks, I wake up with some new bump or blemish on my face. No creams or serums seem to help, and when I try to pop them, my skin just ends up looking like the surface of Mars. I know you’re super busy this time of year, but I’m desperate to have my face lasered off and would love your help coordinating the logistics. No worries if you can’t, I’ll just kill myself.
Thick hair — Once upon a time, I had hair that was thicker than a textbook. Now, my poor head is covered in strands thinner than a Propecia pamphlet. What I’d give to look like the women in the shampoo commercials with their thick hair and ability to spin slowly in circles without falling over. I’m hoping that you can get me in to see a hair doctor or perhaps send me some thickening shampoos. Hell, make me a nice wig, I don’t care. Just fix me.
Symmetry — I wouldn’t classify my face as Picasso-esque, but I’ve noticed that one side looks slightly different than the other. And while science claims that this heinous deformity is totally normal and that most people do not have symmetrical faces, I call BS. I saw Bella Hadid in a Cosmo once and her face was so well proportioned that my crooked toad eyes fell slack with tears. I’m open to solutions that involve Botox, filler, or a face transplant. You choose.
Fewer veins — When did we decide that boyfriend jeans were cool and why did we just think of it now? My ass has been straining to get into skintight jeans for most of my life and all I have to thank for it is zero blood flow in my legs and varicose veins on the backs of my knees. Gen Zers will never know the struggle of sitting cross-legged on the floor while wearing low-rise skinny jeans that cut off the circulation to your brain. As holiday retribution, I want all of my veins removed and given to people under 20.
Lasers — In a lot of ways, I’m lucky. Yes, I have facial hair and that’s unfortunate. But at least my mustache is blonde and therefore has way more fun than its black, brunette, and ginger counterparts. Alas, I still don’t like the way it shimmers in the sun or collects beads of sweat when I’m trying to do mental math. This is why I’m asking you to arrange for laser hair removal on my face. Feel free to tackle my armpits and legs while you’re at it. But leave the pubes because in the immortal words of Miley Cyrus they “Can’t Be Tamed.”
Beautiful nails — Every time I try to grow my nails, I look like a malnutritioned witch. Is it too much to ask to have long, luxurious talons like Billie Eilish or Grimes or those crows that live in my mailroom? I want to be able to point with authority. Who’s gonna take me seriously when I scream, “Someone drown that child!!!” if I’ve got stubby, babydoll nails? YOU?!? I doubt it. My only option is to undergo a series of expensive Biotin infusions or get pregnant. I’ll be ovulating on Christmas Santa, so DO WITH THAT INFORMATION WHAT YOU WILL.
Small knuckles — One day, many years ago, a demented jeweler asked me if I was a softball player. I said, “absolutely not” and asked why he wanted to know. He replied, “You have very large knuckles for a woman.” After beating him to death with my large-knuckled fists, I vowed to have my hands done — with extra attention given to my joints. I’m hoping that your orthopedic surgeon can help me turn my Harambe hands (RIP, big guy) into those of a water nymph or woodland sprite.
Big jugs — Whenever I gain weight, it goes straight to my butt. And while some women might consider that a blessing, I do not. I’d much rather gain weight in my front butt aka my boobs. That’s why I need for you to schedule a recurring breast augmentation, where all of my anus fat is removed and injected into my peach pits.
I know this all might seem like a bit much, but it’s a proven fact that beautiful people are happier and therefore nicer. I know because I read it in Cosmo.
Yours in beauty, Me

Baby’s first bath
Adding bath time to baby’s routine is something you can begin shortly after your baby is born.
Some pediatricians recommend delaying a baby’s first bath until they are a few days old. That’s because after birth your baby is covered in vernix, which is a waxy substance on the skin that protects baby from germs in the environment.
If you have a hospital delivery, hospital nurses or staff will clean off the amniotic fluid and blood after your baby is born. But you’ll likely have the option to tell them to leave excess vernix if you choose.
Once you bring your baby home, you can give them a sponge bath. You can clean their head, body, and diaper area. This is the safest way to bathe your baby until their umbilical cord falls off.
Once the cord has fallen off on its own, you can begin bathing your baby by submerging their body in a shallow bath.
Read on to learn how to bathe your baby and other things you need to know about bath time.
How to give baby a sponge bath
Your newborn should be bathed with a sponge bath for the first few weeks of life. This is the simplest way to clean your baby before the umbilical cord falls off.
Sponge baths are also the best way to bathe boys who were circumcised while the circumcision site heals.
You can also give your baby a sponge bath anytime you want to wash one part or all of their body without getting them soaking wet.
Before giving your baby a sponge bath, make sure you have all the supplies you need within easy reach. You’ll also want to warm up the room to keep your baby comfortable.
Supply list
padding for hard surfaces, such as a blanket or towel
bowl of warm, not hot, water
washcloth
mild baby soap
clean diaper
baby towel
Once you’ve gathered your supplies, follow these steps:
Choose a warm room, around 75°F (23.8C) for the bath, remove your baby’s clothes and diaper, and wrap them in a towel.
Lay your baby on a flat surface, such as the floor, changing table, counter next to a sink, or your bed. If your baby is off the ground, use a safety strap or keep one hand on them at all times to make sure they don’t fall.
Unwrap the towel one part at a time to expose only the area of the body you’re washing.
Start at your baby’s face and top of their head: First dip the clean cloth in the warm water. Use only warm water without soap for this step to avoid getting soap in your baby’s eyes or mouth. Wipe the top of the head and around the outer ears, chin, neck folds, and eyes.
Add a drop or two of soap into the warm water. Dip the washcloth in the soapy water and wring it out.
Use the soapy water to clean around the rest of the body and diaper area. You’ll want to clean under the arms and around the genital area. If your baby was circumcised, avoid cleaning the penis to keep the wound dry unless otherwise directed by your baby’s doctor.
Dry your baby off, including drying between skin folds. Put on a clean diaper. You can use a towel with a built-in hood to keep their head warm while they dry off, too.
If you have a newborn boy who was circumcised, follow your doctor’s instructions carefully for keeping the area clean or dry until it has healed. This usually takes about a week to heal.
How to bathe baby in a bathtub
After your infant’s umbilical cord falls off, you can bathe them in a baby bathtub. Follow these steps to safely bathe your baby:
Fill the tub with a small amount of water. Usually, 2 to 3 inches of water is enough. Some tubs can be placed in the sink or regular bathtub, depending on the model you have.
After undressing your baby, place them in the water right away so they don’t get cold.
Use one hand to support your baby’s head and the other to place them feet first into the tub. Their head and neck should be well above water at all times for safety.
You can gently splash or pour warm water over your baby to keep them warm in the tub.
Use a washcloth to clean their face and hair, and shampoo their scalp one to two times per week.
Wash the rest of their body from the top down, using warm water or a wet washcloth.
Gently lift your baby out and pat them dry with a towel. Be sure to also dry the creases in their skin.
Remember to never leave a baby unattended in a tub, even for a second. They can quickly drown, even in a shallow amount of water.
Should you bath baby in a sink or full bath?
There are sink inserts available to bathe a newborn. This can be a good option if you’re traveling or short on space in your home. Follow the bathtub steps above for giving your baby a bath in the sink, but take care that the water coming from the sink faucet isn’t too hot.
When your baby is able to sit up on their own (usually around 6 months), you can use the full bathtub. Fill the tub with only a few inches of water and supervise them at all times, making sure their head and neck stay well above water.
Do you need soap?
You can use mild baby soap or baby wash while bathing your newborn. Avoid using regular soap because it can be too harsh and can dry out your baby’s delicate skin. Your newborn’s skin also doesn’t need moisturizer.
How to wash baby’s scalp and hair
Plan to wash your baby’s scalp or hair twice a week. To wash your baby’s scalp or hair, gently massage a baby shampoo into their hair, if they have any, or directly onto their scalp. Rinse it out by dabbing with a wet washcloth.
In a baby tub, you can also gently tip your baby’s head back and keep one hand over their forehead while you pour on some warm water. The water will spill over the sides of their head to rinse out the shampoo.
Gently washing your baby’s hair will not hurt a soft spot, but talk with your pediatrician if you have concerns. If your baby has cradle cap, you can gently brush your baby’s hair and scalp. But take care not to pick or scrape at their scalp.
How hot should the water be?
The water temperature to bathe your baby should be warm, never hot. The ideal temperature is 98.6°F (between 37°C and 38°C). You can use a bath thermometer to monitor the temperature, or check the water with your wrist or elbow to confirm it’s warm and not hot.
Also, check different sides of the tub or baby bath to confirm there are no hot spots. If using a tub or basin, turn on the cold water first and then the hot water to fill it.
If you live in a house, you can also adjust the water heater to ensure it doesn’t go above 120°F (48.8°C), which can badly scald your baby’s skin. You likely can’t adjust the water heater if you live in an apartment complex or condo.
How often do babies need baths?
In your baby’s first year, they may only need about three baths a week. This is usually frequent enough if you wash the diaper area thoroughly every time you change your baby.
Bathing once a day or every other day is also OK, but any more frequently than that could dry out your baby’s skin. That’s especially the case if you use soap or other baby wash.
The takeaway
Your baby should be supervised at all times while bathing. Never leave a newborn unattended around water.
If your newborn cries or doesn’t enjoy bath time, make sure the room is warm enough, the water isn’t too hot, and you’re keeping them wrapped in a towel (during a sponge bath) to keep them comfortable.
When your baby is sitting up on their own, you can bathe them in the full bathtub. Bath toys or books can help baby enjoy bathtime, but use caution with bubbles, since frequent bubble baths can dry out baby’s skin.
