Sketchbook 8: Sleep Dealer Reflections
1. Near future reflection
· Technological: The nodes were one of the biggest technologies used in the movie which connected people with one another and their technology, I think it’s similar to the hearing aids and pacemakers people have which make the body look strange, but are just accepted as normal in society. They also reflect upon society’s increasing dependency on technology that one day they will become bonded with it.
· Socioeconomic: One socioeconomic factors presented in Sleep Dealer was the transfer of money from Memo back to his family while taxes withdrew a good portion of that money. In the present time, there are many people moving away from their family (like Filipinos) to find work elsewhere, in the bigger cities or other countries (like the U.S.) and send money to their loved ones who are far away.
· Ecological: An ecological aspect of the movie that reflects the present day world is their conservation of a resource and selling of it at high prices. This is similar to the price of gasoline – it is a limited resource that we use very regularly and a growing trend is its increasing price.
2. Border city reflection - Israel
· Technology: Weaponry is a technology that will become very pertinent for the ruling class in the future because that will show their power and control over their subjects. Being able to get your hands on one would mean extra security, a chance of rebellion, a chance to survive, but you would have to be extra cautious to keep it hidden otherwise you’re sure in for a beat down by guards.
· Socioeconomic policy: A socioeconomic policy that would be important in the future would be the social security act which was intended to make people have a guaranteed retirement fund that they build themselves and for the generation preceding them. The system hasn’t worked out exactly as planned and in the future there may be many people who wish to depend on this money to find they don’t have enough to properly retire and thus have to continue to be in the job market, maybe even working to death.
· Ecological/environmental condition: An environmental condition that would greatly affect the future society a lesser variety in food and a greater amount of mass production of certain types of food – leading to many monoculture plantations.
· Reincarnation: In this future society where people are overworked on large farms to feed everyone and are heavily monitored by men with weapons, life as a migrant worker was terrifying. Everywhere I would, I only saw desolation, destruction, terror. All the food I used to eat has been reduced to basic grains. It feels like we’ve gone back in time instead of progressed forward. All the wondrous colors in our food is gone. Everything seems bland and bleak. The guards just stare at us through their masks, watching us break our backs, watching us sweat in the heat, watching us do everything to help them survive. They just stand there and do nothing to help. When they see an old man fall down, they do nothing but stare as we clamor over him, trying to help him up or check if he’s still alive. Our money is scarce. Our lives our hard. Our lives seem pointless, but we go on. We continue living in this corrupt world while they just watch. I sometimes stare back at them and wonder why they’re doing this, why they don’t help us, why they follow orders from the higher ups instead of trying to make things better, or at least how they used to be. Once they catch on that I’m not working, I immediately turn back for fear of getting called upon or worse, shot at. I don’t like this world. I want to drift away into the fantasies I’ve dreamt of, but that’s impossible for it is all a dream and this is reality. I will be working in these fields until I pass out or run away.
3. The joy and color were the first to go.

2070, Singapore.
I came to Singapore at the cusp of the water break down in 2063. I was only 19 at the time, living with my cousin who migrated 4 years before. Coincidentally, my first job was as a construction worker at a desalination plant, the third of its kind to allow Singapore its water independence. There were a lot of other Burmese people so the work was not as lonely nor as hard as I imagined it to be but the hours were long and involved a lot of manual labor. I didn’t speak very much English or Singlish and had to mime my way out of most things during the first few months. But it was all worth it because I only had one goal in mind: to support my family back in Irrawaddy. Not even six months at the job, everything collapsed. The second desalination plant was first to go. A few hours later, the first and the third. Some say it was the Malaysians who didn’t want to hand over their only political advantage over Singapore. Some say it was socialists. Nobody really found out who did it but a lot of people died in that first explosion. Some people were close enough to the sea and tried to swim away, some drowned that way and most were never recovered. My cousin was one of these people. For weeks, police dug through rubble and cleared the scenes and I hung around, watching them do scan the sites with some kind of x-ray gun to look for bodies. A month later, everything was chaos. The water supply was all but gone and there were riots, raids, and the only people in the way were scared 20 year old police and military officers. The convenience stores and the shopping malls were first to go.

1.
Technological: In the movie, Memo makes video calls with his families. This technology is based on the present day version, Facetime/Skype.
Socioeconomic: In the movie, Memo’s work is manual, repetitive, and easily learned. This is the kind of jobs that most Americans will not do. In today’s world, people use immigrant workers as cheap labor and let them do the jobs Americans will not do.
Ecological: An Ecological example from the movie is that Santa Ana is facing a severe drought. This is based on the fact that California is facing a severe drought recently.
2.
Hong Kong
Technology: It has one of the world’s best subways. Hong Kong’s 218-kilometer subway network serves 1.6 billion passengers per year.
Socioeconomic policy: There are about 300,000 domestic workers (also called maids or nannies) in Hong Kong at any given time, living with local families. They make up approximately 3% of the population of Hong Kong. The majority of domestic workers come from the Philippines, though increasingly there are more Indonesians. They usually live in their employer’s residence and perform various household duties such as cooking, serving, cleaning, dish-washing, and childcare.
Ecological/environmental condition: Land is always a scare resource in Hong Kong. The problem of scarcity of land will hinder Hong Kong’s development. For economic developments, people will reclaim land from the sea. Many new towns and harbors are built on reclaimed land. However, with the government’s low-cost dredging technique, the reclamation will cause some irreversible impacts to the marine environments such as serious habitat loss and affect fish populations.
As a poor immigrant in Hong Kong, I will be homeless since I cannot afford the high rent in Hong Kong. I cannot even sleep in the park because all the lands are used for commercial buildings and factories and there is no park in Hong Kong in the future. I have to sleep in the ditch. I cannot find a job, either. There are too many immigrants from South Asia, and they are the cheapest labor in the Hong Kong. The jobs are not enough, so only the “elites” are able to get a job. I will starve to death since the cost of living is too high in Hong Kong, and I am too poor to buy the food.

Final mock-up using plastic spray painted black. I plan on using white in my final model as although I like the black I think white will create a more fluid design and the craft is also likely to look better as I won't have to spray paint it.

As tribute to the recently deceased Lee Kuan Yew, the metropole/border city of my choosing is Singapore. An interesting fact about Singapore is that it is a small island with little to no natural resources on its own. But by acting as a port, it is among the most developed cities in Asia. Its vast economic prosperity can be credited to many things such as stable politics, good infrastructure, smart investments, low-wage-low-skill migrant workers, etc. However, as a small island with near nonexistent natural resources, it has to import a lot of things such as water and sand. About 40% of Singapore’s water is imported from Malaysia as they have a water agreement but even as Singapore builds desalination plants it might not be enough for the entirety of Singapore’s water needs especially since the water agreement is set to expire on 2062. Similarly, the sand from Singapore’s beaches such as Marina Bay were imported. However, since they have started building those beaches, there has been concern because sand dredging from other countries have large environmental effects on the country of export as it can lead to ecological failures as well as landslides, floods, erosions, etc. Thus, the countries of major export to Singapore and others have been banning sand trade one after the other. Among these countries are Malaysia, Indonesia, China and even Cambodia. With this in mind, I would like to switch over to the future where I am reincarnated as one of these low-wage-low-skill migrant workers.
