I was rereading Judicial Impropriety tonight (seriously so very hyped for Harry's POV!!) and I decided to go through your dan x harry tag and I saw that you mentioned a "they both raise abby" AU in one of the posts about slow burn but not really - is this another one of your WIPs because it sounds amazing! :D
hi nonny! it may please you to know that i've just posted the first chapter of Code of Conduct, aka harry's pov of how he and dan get together in Judicial Impropriety. hope you enjoy! 😄
to answer your question, the 'dan and harry raise abby' idea is an au that my dear friend @bornforastorm and i plotted together over discord one afternoon. will i ever write it? never say never. for now though it lives in my head rent free. here's the gist:
in the early 2000s, harry discovers that he actually Does Not Like living upstate and wants to move back to the city. gina wants to stay in skaneateles. they end up divorcing and harry gets full custody of abby - yay! except real estate in the city is So Expensive. luckily for harry, dan (who was widowed around a year before harry got divorced) has a spare bedroom and is more than willing to indefinitely put up his best friend / unrequited crush and his best friend / unrequited crush's precocious tween daughter.
harry is so busy trying to find a job (and so torn up about his marriage ending) that dan ends up taking abby out a lot. except he has no idea what to do with kids so they end up seeing r-rated horror movies together and throwing rocks at pigeons in the park and scamming people at fancy restaurants and toy stores by telling them that abby has six months to live.
abby may be perky and sweet but (like harry) she has no qualms about roasting dan like a melange of seasonal vegetables
abby: look at my dad's high-waisted roommate, he's got feminine hips! dan: no!! that's the thing i'm sensitive about!!
alternatively: dan: my hips are VERY manly excuse you!! tell her harry harry, so horny he's going to die: they're fine
turns out!! harry might have a thing for dan. a small, tiny, miniscule thing that he's pretty sure started the minute they shook hands in his chambers. this small tiny miniscule thing is not helped by the fact that harry now has to spend 24 hours a day in a two bedroom apartment with his unrequited crush of over a decade.
speaking of the two bedroom apartment thing. so abby takes the spare bedroom. obviously. that makes sense. harry crashes on the foldout sofa for about a week. then he learns one night that dan still has nightmares about the plane crash, so out of the goodness of his heart, he offers to stay with dan in dan's room until he falls asleep. and then they both fall asleep. and then the next night they fall asleep in the same bed. and the next night. and the next night. and every single night for the next year they platonically share a bed.
at the one year mark sleeping together becomes sleeping together. neither of them have gone out with or slept with anyone else in all that time. neither of them admit that they are in love with each other. after all having sex with each other is still totally platonic since they don't kiss.
they go to each other's work events and abby's parent teacher conferences as each other's completely platonic date.
harry: this is my best friend and platonic co-parent slash roommate dan: also bedmate harry: right that too abby: you sound like a yuppie harry: You Take That Back
abby: are you and dan dating harry: what!!!!!!!! no!!!!!!!!!!!!! why would you think that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! abby: you share a bed harry: to save space so you can have your own room!!!!! also because he has nightmares from almost dying and i have nightmares about him dying so it makes sense we sleep together!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! abby: wow you need help
abby: i can snort chocolate milk out of my nose, want to see dan: that's disgusting and also impossible abby: no it's not. i bet you could do it. here, drink some dan: [drinks] abby: are you in love with my dad dan: [snorts chocolate milk out of his nose] abby: [covered in milk and snot] i knew it 😈😈😈
the second she figures out they're both in love with each other abby tries to matchmake dan and harry. the subtle approach does not work since they're both idiots, so she stages a hunger strike until dan and harry kiss.
dan: [kisses harry on the cheek] abby: pathetic
this all culminates with abby telling dan that she and harry found a new place to live (they didn't) and dan runs to harry's office at columbia like Do Not Move Out, Live With Me Forever, I Love You (but if you don't feel the same way ignore that last part)
harry, extremely confused: i love you too????????? student taking a makeup exam in harry's office: i'm just gonna head out
harry and dan, who have been having sex for over a year but have yet to actually kiss, spend the next four hours making out on harry's desk
harry: i feel like i'm forgetting something dan: it's probably not important if you can't remember harry: you're right abby: [standing in the pouring rain at soccer practice] 😈 i'm gonna get so much mileage out of this 😈
things about abby stone-fielding:
she is the queen of Wait Til My Fathers Hear About This
she threatens people with I'll See You In Court every time something does not go her way
she takes after her fathers in that she is a very intense dork and a fiscal conservative and flirts like a fiend but is terrible at it
she pulls the 'if you do this for me you'll be my favorite father' trick on harry and dan constantly and they fall for it every time
she also calls dan and harry both 'dad' and expects everyone (including dan and harry) to figure out who she's talking about
she tells everyone she has a secret third dad named reinhold and dan threatens to emancipate her when he finds out harry, sliding her twenty dollars: keep it up
abby's teacher: so abby told the class her goal is to go to law school so she can sue the government and take over the country dan: she gets her ambition from me 🥰 abby's teacher: she then proceeded to put an apple in her mouth and played the flute with her nose harry: [crying] that's my girl

For the last 50 years, the United States military has enjoyed air superiority over essentially every other nation on the planet. In addition to good-ol’ American ingenuity and freedom to create, this superiority was created and is maintained by the government’s support of ongoing research and development to maintain that superiority. The research and development process for new fighter jets can take decades, as with the F-22 Raptor and the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF). China has always lagged significantly behind the United States in this department, but they’ve recently made major strides.
A significant factor in China’s progress comes as a result of the 2015 acquisition of Henniges Automotive, a Michigan company whose anti-vibration (stealth) technology is used on the F-35 (stealth) fighter, by Aviation Industry Corp of China (AVIC), the state-owned entity that produces fighter jets for the Chinese military.
Guess whose company partnered with AVIC in that acquisition? That’s right -- Hunter Biden, Devon Archer, and Chris Heinz’s BHR.
As a refresher: BHR is a Chinese venture capital firm in which Rosemont Seneca Thornton (the Biden/Heinz/Archer/Bulger partnership) owned a 30 percent stake, and which is majority-owned and controlled by the state-owned Bank of China. (Hunter Biden still owns 10 percent through his Skaneateles, LLC entity.)
For the 2015 transaction a wholly-owned subsidiary of AVIC, AVIC Auto, partnered with BHR to acquire Henniges, with AVIC Auto owning 51 percent and BHR owning 49 percent -- meaning that the Chinese government-owned military manufacturer ended up with a controlling interest in Henniges.
The Chinese government and military have attempted for decades to catch up to the aforementioned US military superiority, by any means necessary. At the time of the sale, U.S. government officials -- and the public, through Edward Snowden – were aware that China had hacked “terabytes” of data, including F-35 technology, and made use of it in their J-20 fighter. By acquiring Henniges and their anti-vibration technology, AVIC could put that technology directly to use in the Chinese military jets.
In a press release announcing the deal Daen Lu, described as chairman of Henniges Automotive, said (emphasis added):
“This acquisition represents a long-term, strategic investment by AVIC Auto to sustain and grow the Henniges business, while keeping the successful leadership, culture, benefits and contracts associated with the company intact. We are excited about this acquisition, and look forward to the addition of their significant expertise and the benefits it will bring to both of our companies.”
Yes, we’re sure AVIC looked forward to the significant expertise Henniges brought to the table. And who is Daen Lu? A Bloomberg profile describes him as both the Chairman of the Board of Henniges Automotive and as Chairman of AVIC Capital Co., LTD. So, was he on the board of Henniges before the acquisition, or was he inserted by AVIC?
BHR’s press release shares similar sentiments. In a March 2016 interview, BHR CEO Jonathan Li characterized the Henniges transaction as BHR’s “typical business model”:
Henniges [an automotive equipment manufacturer acquired last year] is our typical business model. We set up a joint venture with AVIC -- they own 51% and we own 49% – and did the acquisition together. AVIC has industry experience, operations in China, and it knew Henniges well. As a financial investor, we use our international network and our professionalism. While the AVIC is very experienced in international acquisitions, some Chinese companies don’t have the same cross-border experience and so may appreciate what we can offer in this domain.
Xin Wang, a US-educated Canadian attorney who serves as BHR’s Managing Partner, said that by BHR serving as a conduit for the SOE they “can facilitate the transaction.”
Just by virtue of being an SOE there is the perception -- rightly or wrongly – that there will be some cross-cultural issues. Having us and our global resources there as a financial investor, and serving as a conduit, can facilitate the transaction.
A look at the research and development timelines of the F-35 and the J-31 illustrates the advantage that both hacking and the strategic acquisition of Henniges have given the Chinese.

It’s Fine Press Friday!
This week we present a 1992 Limited Editions Club printing of American poet and writer Margaret Walker’s 1942 Yale Series of Younger Poets Competition-winning poem For My People with original lithographs by African American sculptor and printmaker Elizabeth Catlett, printed in a limited edition of 400 copies signed by the author and artist. The text was hand-set in Monotype Albertus and printed letterpress on Arches Cover paper by Michael and Winifred Bixler in Skaneateles, N. Y. and the lithographs were pulled by J.K. Fine Art Editions in Union City, N.J. Half the edition was bound at Jovonis Bookbindery in Springfield, Mass. and the other half at the Spectrum Bindery in southern California; we have no idea which binding we hold. But we do know that our copy is a gift from our friends Megan Holbrook and Eric Vogel.

A celebrity sighting on Seneca Lake
By Jonathan Monfiletto
Tumblr media
Seneca Lake drew the Public Universal Friend and their followers to settle what is now Yates County and led the Society of Universal Friends to become the first permanent, non-native group of people to establish a community west of the modern-day Utica-Rome area. And ever since then, the Finger Lakes region has attracted people of all kinds for a variety of reasons; in particular, celebrities of different types and sizes have found refuge in waterfront properties along the 11 lakes.
I am well aware of all this, of course, especially the celebrity thing. I have heard the tales of Rod Serling and his family staying in their cottage on Cayuga Lake and visiting the nearby village of Interlaken, and I recall – from my days as a weekly newspaper editor – the stir created in the community by reports that Derek Jeter had purchased a mansion on Skaneateles Lake. Then, there are the many well-known people, again of different types and sizes, who are well-known locally for their residences, both permanent and season, around the region and along the lakes.
Yes, I am well aware of all this; however, I was not prepared when someone called asking me to find information about Crystal Eastman and her whereabouts in Yates County history. OK, I now know a little more about who Eastman was, which I will get to very soon, but at that point I had never heard of her. I assumed she was some sort of a relative of the woman calling, and the woman was looking for more information about her relative. Unfortunately, as I told the woman, I found little evidence that connected Eastman to Yates County. Searching our database of digitized newspapers, I uncovered just 10 mentions of Eastman in Yates County newspapers, mostly from the personals sections.
However, searching the NYS Historic Newspapers website (www.nyshistoricnewspapers.org – a wonderful resource for any genealogical and topical research within the context of New York history), I uncovered more information about Eastman and realized just what a celebrity she was in her day – quite a stalwart in the labor rights and women’s rights movements in the first quarter of the 20th century. It also appears she wasn’t from Yates County but did hail from elsewhere in the region, having grown up in Canandaigua and Elmira and then being buried in Canandaigua in her family plot upon her death.
Yet, a few of the references to Eastman in the Yates County newspapers read like reports of a celebrity sighting in the area, while others do account for her noteworthy professional career. Her biographies on Wikipedia and Find-A-Grave describe her as an antimilitarist, feminist, socialist, and journalist, having earned her law degree from New York University, received her master’s degree in sociology from Columbia University, and graduated from Vassar College in 1903. Both biographies note her roles within the fights for women’s suffrage and labor justice, both as an outsider and an insider (for example, she served on a New York State commission on employer’s liability and industrial accidents and drafted the first worker’s compensation law in this capacity). Meanwhile, her mentions in Yates County newspapers highlight her visits to the area – perhaps to see relatives and stay at their cottages.
An item under a column titled “Glenora” in the August 4, 1909 edition of the Dundee Observer notes, “Miss Crystal Eastman is spending her vacation at the Eastman cottage,” indicating she was related to the Yates County branch of the Eastman family. On September 5, the newspaper reported Eastman had returned to New York City. It is interesting to look at other newspapers to see what else was going on in Eastman’s life around the time of this excursion to Seneca Lake. In December 1908, she was admitted to the bar as a practicing lawyer with two other women in a class of 134 students. In May 1909, she spoke at a meeting of the Woman’s Trade Union League about her recent study of cases of 500 men killed in industrial accidents. Calling the federal employers’ liability laws “painfully inadequate,” she noted she found little provision made for the families of these men – putting the United States on par with Russia in this regard, she said. The next month, the New York governor appointed her to a committee to study employers’ liability and the causes and effects of unemployment in the state. The month after she returned from Glenora, she appeared as a speaker at the Greater New York Woman Suffrage Convention at Carnegie Hall. In March 1910, she testified – along with other notable people on either side of the women’s suffrage question – at a hearing of the New York Legislature on whether to give women the right to vote statewide.
The April 26, 1911 edition of the Yates County Chronicle and the April 28, 1911 edition of the Rushville Chronicle carried identical announcements of Eastman’s engagement to her first husband, Wallace Benedict, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Listing Eastman as of Elmira, these reports seem to show Yates County residents would have been interested in the whereabouts of this relatively local person. Around this time, she continued to advocate for fair labor laws and practices – such as a nine-hour workday for women – through her work with New York State. After her marriage, it appears she moved to her husband’s home state and championed the cause of women’s suffrage there.
On March 3, 1913 – as reported locally in the Penn Yan Democrat – Eastman took part in the Woman Suffrage Procession as one of four horsewomen forming a relay into Washington, D.C. to herald the progress of the procession. That October, she was added to the staff of the Federal Labor Commission and continued to advocate for workers, women, and working women. This included, according to the June 2, 1915 edition of the Penn Yan Express, a stint in charge of the saleswomen’s bureau for the Maxwell Motor Company as the automobile manufacturer sought to employ women to sell its cars to other women.
Around this time, she also took at least two more trips to Glenora – first as Mrs. Crystal Eastman Benedict, of Milwaukee, according to the June 30, 1915 edition of the Dundee Observer and then, after her divorce and remarriage, as Mrs. Crystal Eastman Fuller, of New York, according the newspaper’s August 8, 1918 issue. Interestingly, newspapers in the intervening years highlight Eastman’s denial of alimony from her first husband as her way of asserting her independence and self-sufficiency. She felt women should show their ability to support themselves by rejecting assistance from their ex-husbands. At the same time, as the Great War broke out in Europe and eventually the United States joined the conflict, Eastman became involved in the Women’s Peace Party and its activities and events. The group opposed that war and any war or militaristic preparations for war.
Of course, there is much more – and always more – to say about Eastman’s life, times, and work, as I have discovered in my brief research of her. For example, she was recently celebrated locally for her role in co-authoring the Equal Rights Amendment. This is just a glimpse of her through the lens of Yates County newspaper coverage, with a celebrity sighting on Seneca Lake.

Newark to Camillus
French toast with peaches and bacon was a delicious way to start the day. There should be no delusions that this is a trip that includes weight loss.
We got out of Newark at a decent time and jumped on the trail. We saw the Barge Canal at the beginning of the day but it went off to the north. The rest of the ride was a mix of riding on the original Erie Canal towpath and roads.
We hit some locks in Lyons and some interesting old boats in dry dock.
Tumblr media
When we rode on the Erie Canal tow path, we learned that it had 83 locks - which makes a lot more sense as compared to the C&O since they were of similar ages. The Barge Canal didn’t need near as many.
Rob took my key this morning to unlock the bikes, and I didn’t get them back right away. Just before the video below, I got notified that my keys were left behind (by the AirTag). Turns out my keys left me behind!

Tumblr media Tumblr media
We stopped in Weedsport for lunch and went on to Jordan. There have been lots of murals along the way. Here is the one from Jordan about Canal Law.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We rode just over 50 miles today. Instead of going on to Syracuse we stopped at Camillus. What I didn’t realize when I booked the inn was that we had a huge hill to climb to get there. There was no way I was going back to town for dinner and climb that hill again. The inn owner said that Uber is in the area and suggested going down to Skaneateles Lake - one of the NY finger lakes.
We got an Uber to take us down no problem. Getting one back was the sketchy part, but we did make it back without walking! It was a fun little unexpected adventure. Great dinner too!
