When he didn’t answer, Oka sighed. From the corner of his eye, Reki saw Oka drag a stool over to his work space. Great. He propped an elbow on the table, putting his chin in his hand (his stupid, tapping, rubbing, shaking hand) then looked away. His other hand bounced in his lap. “Reki,” Oka spoke again. There was a familiar edge to his voice, the kind of edge Reki heard every time Oka tried talking about feelings, ugh. “What’s up?”

“Nothing,” he grumbled, a slew of cooing following the word. He sounded so stupid. His fingernails gripped his thigh, pinching angrily.

It hurt like hell.

He couldn’t stop.

Hiromi types frenziedly on his phone while chugging a can of sweet melon drink.

Yes… yes! These are all the perfect skate moves for his next beef!

An alarm sets off. Hiromi examines his phone-screen, resetting it. Only thirty minutes left of his break. He bites his sandwich, wolfing it. Parking in the alley usually keeps him out of sight from customers and the store's manager. 

Ugh… 

Hiromi's heart clenches up painfully.

Why… why, why did she have to love someone else…

His thought stutter a halt as a set of knuckles rap against Hiromi's car-window. 

Manager Oka beams from the outside, waving cheerfully.

The lump of sandwich in his throat chokes him. Hiromi scrambles to get out, nearly barreling into the other man. "Y-You!" Hiromi bellows, raising a finger.

"Hiya," Manager Oka greets him, chuckling. "Sorry for catching you at a bad time. I, uh — well, I had your order."

"Oh," Hiromi grumbles, his cheeks pinkening. "Come around to the back."

He leads, hearing Manager Oka's footsteps steadily behind him. 

"Wow," Manager Oka points out, nodding to the array of bluish-purple irises and snowdrops and yellow tsubaki in a garden-plot. "Did you plant them yourself?"

"Mhm! For special arrangements!" Hiromi says excitedly.

After a moment, he forces himself to scowl and deepen his voice.

"Give me the freakin' order…"

Unfazed, Manager Oka unzips the carrier-bag, presenting Shadow's new custom-made board. "I had trouble with your sketch you provided on the deck's concept art, so let me know if — " As Manager Oka helpfully goes on, Hiromi notices Shadow's personal design backgrounded in red chrysanthemums and several 'birds of paradise' flowers. " — I can redo any of the changes — "

"Did you research these flowers?" Hiromi demands, turning pinker than before.

"Hmm?" Manager Oka glances over the skateboard, nodding. "Sure I did."

"AAACK!"

Hiromi runs his fingers through his tuft of orange hair, nervously sweating.

Love? 

Why would he use flowers meaning love and freedom and joy — AND LOVE?!

"Birds of paradise symbolize warmer climates, don't they?" Manager Oka points out, and Hiromi gawks. "Red chrysanthemums for the deep passion to your interests? Did I get that wrong or something?" 

Hiromi nearly collapses, swaying, tugging his brown apron over his head.

"Erm… it's fine as it is…"

Manager Oka shrugs.

"Alright then," he says, zipping the skateboard in and passing the carrier-bag to Hiromi. "By the way, it's nice to see someone who embraces his masculinity — and at the same time, someone who isn't afraid to enjoy pretty flowers. That's the manliest thing I can think of." Manager Oka eyes him, grinning.

WHH — ?!

Hiromi drops his apron, gawking harder.

"You can surprise me where I work next time," Manager Oka offers, disappearing out the gate with a wink and another chuckle.

After a long, heart-pounding moment of silence, a blushing Hiromi returns in. 

He woozily stares at the ceiling.

Hiromi's face beams.

Yes… yes!

It’s Reki’s debut night at S as Sunflower and his birthday! Today marks the last chapter in To Build a Chef, the third fic in my Sunflower series! (It also lines up with the last chapter of To Build a Programmer, fun fact).

Thanks so much to @mediaraiz for the incredible art she’s made for the series so far (2 pieces for To Build a Programmer and 2 for To Build a Chef). It’s all been incredibly beautiful, and I couldn’t ask for better!

I was watching the later parts of Sk8 with people this morning, and I had a realization that is probably obvious to some of you, but hadn't really hit me before.

One of the major themes of Sk8 is connections to others: Having people around to make life fun; dealing with the pain of losing those around you; that despite how painful it can be, you have to try again to have any happiness. I'll start off talking about Langa.

The Langa in the show is a Langa who just lost one of the most important people in his life, his father. Because of this, he's in a strong depression. Snowboarding, a hobby since he was a toddler, gives him nothing, because all that he can think of is that he can't snowboard with his father anymore. He's in a new country, far away from everything he's ever known. He's lost almost everything, and all he can really think about is finding a way to help support his mother, searching for a job.

But then, he has something: He meets Reki, he makes a friend. He learns how to skateboard, a hobby similar to his old one, but this time he has someone he has be with again. He's no longer alone in his depression, he has people in his life, and eventually, he can even laugh again.

When he and Reki fight, he loses the person who brought him to this hobby, he isn't happy anymore. He doesn't want to skate just to skate, he also wants to skate because it's a connection to his best friend. When he's in the zone, is all alone, the thing that brings him back to his senses, back to living, is a reminder of his best friend; "Fun", something that he can only have in the real world, the world with his friends.

Meanwhile, Adam didn't have someone to pull him out of his abyss; Originally, Tadashi helped him not be alone, and through him he met Cherry and Joe, but because of Adam's father, they were pulled apart when it mattered most. Adam was all alone, with no way to have fun anymore. And when that happened, he had two choices: die, or find a different way to live. And he ended up choosing the second, putting winning, the value his upbringing beat into him, above all else.

But he didn't actually want this. He told himself that he was satisfied with winning, that he didn't need connections with other people, but in fact, not having a friend was what led him to his despair. The funeral beef was essentially a suicide attempt; he had nothing left, he didn't win properly anymore, so he might as well die along with his Eve. And if Eve doesn't exist, all the more reason to end it. Because "Eve" wasn't really someone he was in love with, it was an idealized dream of someone, anyone, rescuing him from himself again.

And Tadashi ended up realizing this; The crux of what destroyed Adam was losing connections to people, being successful at his hobbies or his career wouldn't bring him any happiness if he was alone at the top. His current method of bring Ainosuke-sama happiness was flawed. So he trusted Adam's happiness to Langa, someone who he thought could teach Adam have connections with other people again. And his trust was warranted, Langa managed to bring Adam back and teach him that it was okay to want friends, that he had people willing to be friends right in front of him.

You see it with other characters as well. Kojiro and Kaoru, friends since they were 5, with the iconic line, "At least we have each other, right, Kaoru?". Miya, who made it big, but lost his friends, and didn't want it at all. Shadow, who skated so that he could connect with his manager. Reki and Oka, who knew they would never be able to win, but that wasn't the point, was it, what brought them happiness was their friendship with other skaters, skating as a ritual of love. And not in the way Adam thinks of it, "love" as something painful and malicious, love as something that brings people together.

So I see you’ve watched Sk8 the infinity! I’m glad you seem to enjoy it! I know you really love Lange and Reki, but is it alright if I ask you about your thoughts on the other characters? Like Cherry, Joe, Shadow, Miya, Adam, Snake, etc?

I remember watching that show when ep 11 came out and I had a brain rot about that show for MONTHS! So glad Season 2 has been announced!

Sure of course it's alright to ask.

Ima just get this out the way, I hate Adam. I hate him. I can sympathise with his back story. And I find his past with Joe and Cherry intresting.

But man everytime he's on he's onscreen I am uncomfortable.

I'm glad he regained his love for skating but dear god stay away from these kids.

Snake, I don't particularly like him. But I find him and his motivations intresting. The insight he has into Adam and who he is, the fact he's his mentor in a way.

His entrance into S was amazing. I like how his conversation with Reki helped Reki realise his passion for skateboarding.... Really wish he hadn't taken him into a love hotel for that conversation though.

Cherry is great. I may have geeked over Carla a wee bit, I think Carla as a concept is so cool.

I love how Cherry tries to exude this image of refinement and prestigue... That gets immediately destroyed when Joe shows up.

I love the bond they have, I'd like to know more about their past. I absolutely get why Cherry wanted to race Adam and holyshit that race.

Joe is great. I love how both of them are mentors to the kids, but especially Joe. Seeing him reach out to Reki when he was at his lowest, because he understands is great.

Because as much as they try to paint Joe as a "simple minded gorilla" he's got a ton of heart and he's very smart. And I like that Cherry knows that, I just love seeing them interact and bicker.

May be starting to ship Joe and Cherry.

I love Miya. Miya is definitely one of my favourite characters. He's such a little nerd. I love seeing him with everyone else because you know he's having fun.

There's something to be said that Adam could've become Miya if he regained or never lost Joe and Cherry.

Miya is everyone's snarky little brother, seeing him open up and have friends is just great. When he convinced those women that Joe was his dad and Cherry was his mum 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼.

Absolutely broke my heart when he told Reki he was breaking his promise to him.

Because it shows how much Reki and the others mean to him, he's afraid of losing them. I don't blame Miya or Shadow for their involvement in that.

Was it mean? Yes, but I think they'd have stopped if they knew how much it was affecting Reki.

Because they've made jokes like this at each other constantly and everyone was okay with it. I think they'd regret it if they knew.

I absolutely love Shadow. Shadow went from the enemy to stressed out single parent and we love to see it.

He didn't adopt these kids, they signed the papers and showed up at his house.

He's a great rep for alt people, looks scary but is soft on the inside. His crush on his co-worker is adorable, I love that his day job is as a florist it's sweet.

I love that for all he says he truly cares about them.

And not on the list but Manager Oka, love him. I love how he's always keeping an eye on Reki and Langa. His talk with Reki after the fight, I like him he's good.

Obviously someone of the characters wouldn't act exactly like their sk8 counterparts but the general premise is there. Yes, DBK is dead I had to kill him for this BUT REDSON STILL HAS A MOM SO IT'S FINE! Also I know some might think that pigsy would work better as Shadow but Reki works for Oka and MK works for Pigsy it makes sense! I'm just now remembering that Sandy would work really well for Shadow but honestly I find it funnier if he was just MK's parent, cause we see Reki's mom so Sandy is just gonna be MK's guardian AND BAI HE CAN BE HIS LITTLE SISTED OMG MY BRAIN! This is making me too happy I'm having too much fun with this.

I think Shadowpeach as Matchablossom works a little too well honestly. I'm just now realizing how similar some of these character dynamics are and honestly I'm living for it. Let me know if y'all want more of this or if you have any thoughts on this au!

God bless the person who took the time to write the spoilers but there is nothing written about Shadow ahahaha poor guy. The girlies aren’t here for your one-sided crush, Hiromi (no idea what happens but I’m assuming it’s about his manager, who we need a name for!!) Honestly would be so great if this story ended with a role reversal of Hiromi discovering he has a secret admirer from S (or Oka) but again, no idea.

Miya and Koyomi being cute together, the fans predicted it in many fics, since they’re closer in age and both bratty lol, and she’s kind of like Reki but younger so of course Miya would adore her. But, she’s 11, if I was Reki I would also protect my lil sis.

I bet Koyomi is a Chihayafuru girlie (shoujo anime about Karuta that’s pretty good!)

Renga being cute, the fans will be happy!

There’s also a mention of little Reki carrying his friend on his back, but it’s unclear if that’s the same friend we briefly see in season 1 flashbacks. I think it might be significant if it is because we know season 2 is in production. So maybe they will finally introduce that character. I would love to see that character brought into the mix and bringing some conflict with him (jealous Langa please).

I’m not really a Matchablossom girlie, (sorry majority of sk8 fans). Although I love them, I would trade their story for any glimpses into their family/home life or first meeting/learning how to skate together in an instant over a homoerotic hair whiff.

Okay, and then we have Adam and Tadashi! Our spoiler person alludes to not knowing how the ova is rated G because apparently we get a scene of Ainosuke in some state of undress. I don’t know what this means. Do we get a butt shot? I guess we have to wait and find out. Love or hate Adam he exists for you to look at disrespectfully.

Oh! And we learn Adam still rides horses? Love that for him. Kind of. He probably only does it to please the aunties.

So Tadashi just sleeps all day in this short? Good for him, good for him. Although the creators mentioned in an interview something about seeing a different side of his character and I really hope there’s more to it than that.

We only know of some possible gay hair touching between tadaai from the spoilers, but we know from the trailers that there are scenes of Tadashi and Adam at S, seemingly alone because Adam doesn’t wear his mask. I was really hoping they would finally race together but I think the spoilers would have mentioned something that exciting, so probably not.

And there are some crumbs for edenshippers, which, not a fan of, but I didn’t come to beef with anyone. They are fictional anime characters and you can play with your Barbie’s however you want! (Except for that one weirdo on tumblr who sent a message to a literal minor who was uncomfortable with Eden, telling them that Langa was Adam’s Eve. Ya’ll. Read the room. Don’t advertise your ship to those who have already mentioned they are uncomfortable with it and don’t act like Adam and harass minors.)
