10. — nostalgia

After meeting Emma while walking through Los Angeles, Lydia goes home and replays bits and pieces of their conversation over and over in her head. Seeing Emma after all these years has made her nostalgic and makes her recall both good and bad memories from their past. Since Emma didn’t seem too angry with her over her teenage mistake, most of the memories are good. They revolve around the two of them dating in high school and how happy Lydia was just to see Emma smile or laugh at one of her jokes; they revolve around how her heart used to skip a beat when Emma held her hand or kissed her; and they revolve around how much fun she used to have visiting Emma and her family.

Lydia feels like she shouldn’t be thinking over things like that. That those memories should be buried since they represent a life she no longer lives and a past she regrets. They’ve only just re-met though, Lydia has to remind herself. And, truthfully, she’s probably just latching on to the only familiar face she’s seen while living in Los Angeles. But really, she can’t help herself, just seeing Emma has brought back an array of feelings that she wasn’t prepared to feel. Seeing her has both excited and scared her at the same time.

After their coffee, Emma agreed to talk to her again sometime and the two of them had swapped numbers. Lydia was confused when that happened, but she was thankful as well. She wanted a friendship with Emma and the idea made her feel so happy that as she got ready for bed, she smiled so much it hurt. She was going to speak to Emma again. Sometime. When? She didn’t know, but it was going to happen. She is going to get to know adult Emma and her interests. It’s amazing. She thought that Emma wouldn’t forgive her, but after swapping numbers and having coffee, it appears that she has. She looks forward to what their future as friends holds, and oh God, she hopes for the best.
