Day 22 // Day 24

The house is quiet tonight. The only sounds are the crackling fire and the clinking of your knitting needles. You’ve made more sweaters for the baby than you can count, of every color and size, but you like to keep your hands busy when you’re nervous.

Your stomach has dropped considerably in the last few days. Your midwife says that the baby is moving in position to be born, but it could still be days away.

”The baby will come when it’s ready,” she says.

So you sit and wait, wishing that Levi were here to tell you it’s gonna be alright..

Day 23 // Day 25

The next morning, you’re awoken by sharp pains in your abdomen, growing with intensity each passing moment.

You try walking to your midwife’s house, but the contractions make you double over. Holding onto a wall, sweat beading your brow, you wonder if you’ll make it.

Then you hear someone calling your name — a familiar voice.

”What are you doing out here? Are you ok?”

“Levi,” you smile through the pain, looking at his disheveled, dirty uniform. There’s a cut across his cheek. “You need a bandage.”

His eyes, full of concern, soften. “Don’t worry about me. Let’s just get you back inside.”

Day 24 // Day 26

The midwife helps with breathing through your contractions as Levi paces the floor, not quite sure what to do with himself. He can feel his cool and stoic demeanor slipping, and so he does what he always does when he feels stressed:

He cleans.

He starts with the kitchen, washing dishes and wiping down the counter covered in flour. You’d been trying to make bread before all this? Do you have to stay active when you’re nervous too?

It only takes an hour for Levi to have the place sparkling. But now what?

“Levi!” You call.

He’s there in two seconds.

Your midwife puts the cold stethoscope to your belly as you lay on your bed. You usually have these checkups alone, but Levi insisted he be here.

“I have some questions”, he’d said.

And he really did. Questions about what you should be eating and drinking, how many hours you should be sleeping each night, and what to do about the sudden discomfort in your abdomen you’d been feeling lately.

When you’re pregnant, everyone wants to touch you. It’s exhausting and annoying.

But not right now, not with Levi’s hand gently caressing your belly, then your hand, then your arm, sending a heat through your body you haven’t felt since—

— When was the last time you were touched?

Your hand now moves up his arm. It’s muscular - much brawnier than you imagined it to be.

Yes, you’d imagined what it would be like to be held by Levi, to touch him.

He pulls you closer.

”The water’s boiling,” you say weakly against his lips.

”I don’t give a shit,” he replies.

Exploding into the room, Hange’s outburst is cut short by Levi’s apparent absence.

“Where’s the birthday boy?” 

“He had business in Trost,” Erwin replies.

Hange raises an eyebrow. “He’s had a lot of business recently.”

At that, Erwin smiles. “He certainly has.”

It’s late, and the road to Trost is long, but Levi promised you he’d be there. He’d surprised himself when he told you his birthday was coming up.

Levi makes you feel sexy. 

And that’s the last thing you thought you’d feel when you’re 7.5 months pregnant.

Kissing is no longer enough for you both, and so Levi’s mouth moves down your neck to your collarbone. One button after the other is undone, and soon your blouse falls to the floor.

Your hands move to cover your breasts, but he stops you.

“No - don’t hide yourself,” he says. “You’re so fucking beautiful.”

Emboldened by his words, your own hands begin to explore, moving down, down, toying with the zipper of his pants –

A glance down to your lips, then back at your eyes. He leans forward then hesitates.

Does he know you want this too? Is he just as scared as you are?

You close the gap between your lips and his.

You place the kettle on top of the stove as Levi takes the plates to the wash basin. Over the months, a warm familiarity has settled between you two - he washes dishes as you hum a tune.

Your hands are placed protectively on your stomach but you’re surprised to see that Levi has done the same. His hand caresses yours, then moves up your arm, so softly.

“Well? What do you think?”

Levi has barely taken a bite of the yellow cake before you ask the question. He wasn’t sure what you were going to do with the bag of lemons he brought, but he’d heard that citrus was good for pregnant women.

His eyes light up as the zesty flavor of the lemon mixes perfectly with the sugary frosting.

”It’s good,” he assures.

“Oh!” Your hand goes to your belly.

Which instantly puts Levi on alert. “What’s wrong?”

“The baby kicked hard when I took a bite. He must like lemons.”

It’s cloudy and gusty the day Levi leaves for Survey Corps Headquarters. Change is in the air and with it a feeling of foreboding. Your feelings are written all over your face.

“It’ll be ok,” Levi assures, “I’ll be back before the baby is born.”

You knew you couldn’t keep Levi with you forever; his duty was first and foremost to the Survey Corps. They need him — Humanity needs him.

But he’ll return to you.

So you put on a brave smile.

“I’ll be fine - just focus on your mission and getting back safely.”

One final kiss, and he’s gone.

An hour’s ride on the ferry and a short trip by carriage, and you are in a different world.

The air smells of pine and there’s a light dusting of snow on the ground.

Levi takes your hand. “Be careful - don’t fall,” he says, leading you to an A-frame structure, smoke already rising from the chimney.

“A cabin?”

“What? You thought I was taking you camping?”

It’s a cozy paradise - blankets piled on the bed, teas in the cupboard, and books on the table. Like he read your mind.

”Why are you doing this, Levi?”

“For the baby,” he pauses, “and for you.”
