Thailand's Top Beach Hotels To Booking || SofiaHotelHuahin
Thailand is a delight for everyone who longs for relaxing beach days with a gorgeous 3,129km (1,944 mi) of coastline. Some of the nicest beaches in the world may be found there, with their powder-soft sand, jungle-covered cliffs, and secret coves.
Koh Samui and Phuket are two breathtaking islands where hills covered in thick vegetation tumble into crystal-clear water and opulent resorts embrace exclusive bays with unending vistas of the sea. Learn more about the best hotels in Thailand that Culture Trip lets you reserve by reading on.
Zeavola Resort, for rustic barefoot luxury
After a few days in your rustic-luxe teakwood villa at this village-style resort on the northern tip of Phi Phi Don Island, you could forget you're not from there. This resort, which is completely surrounded by the Koh Phi Phi National Park, is all about the outdoors. With al fresco rainfall showers, even bathing is an opportunity to be outside. A relaxed seafood buffet is served while your toes are in the sand after earning your PADI certificate (there is no prettier spot to study) or enjoying a leisurely boat tour to the nearby marine park beaches, lagoons, and isolated islands.
The Sarojin, for a deeply romantic retreat
This quiet resort on the outskirts of Khao Lak pampers you with enchanting acres of tropical vegetation. The rooms are on the plush side of simple; picture polished oak floors, peaceful views of the palm-tree-lined grounds, and, in the case of the Pool Residences, deep onyx plunge pools for sipping cocktails at night. The pool is lined with four-poster daybeds, where you can finally complete your vacation book as the white cloth sways dramatically in the breeze. Afterward, toast the occasion with a champagne cocktail at the fig tree-side bar.
Zazen Boutique Resort and Spa, for inner peace
A hotel with a name that means "to find inner peace" in Japanese was destined to be a relaxing haven. With terracotta-tiled bungalows loaded with home comforts, 80 metres (262 feet) of white sand beach, an open-air restaurant with traditional Thai dancers, and a glass wine cellar stocked with 300 labels, this Bophut beach resort on Koh Samui does not disappoint. At the tranquil spa, which provides Ayurvedic and conventional Thai treatments, unwind totally.
Six Senses Yao Noi, for spectacular excursions
There's no need to feel limited to the resort at this enticing hotel in Phuket, even while it's alluring to drift between the private pool of your thatched room and the idyllic hillside spa village. The fantastic excursions provided by Six Senses should not be missed. Consider taking a guided bicycle tour past rubber plantations, a Muay Thai class, volunteering at a nearby school, or an island-hopping cruise while sailing over pristine lagoons.
Phuket's Trisara Villas and Residences offers stunning ocean views.
Getting a sea view at Phuket's Trisara Villas and Residences is not a big deal. Every one of the 39 villas offers sweeping views of the sparkling Andaman Sea, which you can take in from your private balcony or the enormous infinity pool that has been carved out of the hillside. Along with three outstanding restaurants, including the Deck, which holds a must-attend Sunday jazz brunch, there are 40 spacious acres (16 hectares) of gardens to enjoy. There is also a spa, gym, and 45-meter (148-foot) lap pool.

Thailand's Best Beaches
Thailand's Best #Beaches - So many tropical beach paradises in Thailand, so little time. You kind of can’t go wrong on any beach in #Thailand but we picked a few of our favorites anyway, including entire islands with multiple beach options.
Want to stroll for miles along deserted stretches of silky, white sand? Snorkel, dive, and surf just offshore? Party under a full moon until dawn, or just hide away from the rest of the world? There’s a beach—and islands filled with a variety of beach options—for that in Thailand.
Ko Jum This tiny car-free island is comprised of jungle, rubber trees, a few guesthouses and resorts, and that’s pretty much it. Somehow, the locals haven’t gone tourist crazy so it’s a true escape from more popular areas and just a great place for sunbathing, afternoon napping, and listening to waves lapping on the shore. There are no ferry piers or docks, so long-tail boats go to retrieve guests a few times a day from the big ferry boats out at sea.
Railay Beach No roads, no cars, just paradise. Railay is a peninsula between Krabi Town and Ao Nang and can only be reached by boat so it is remote, laid-back, and much quieter than its neighbor, Ao Nang. Railay’s craggy limestone karsts attract climbers from all over the world, while the pristine, white sands and the lack of vehicles attract vacationers desiring a blissfully relaxing destination. It’s the kind of place to read a book, swim multiple times a day, take a long-tailed boat ride and island-hop, or just chill and soak in the stunning setting. If you get antsy, hop on a boat to Ao Nang where there’s a little more going on. Or don’t.
Kata Beach An energetic and sporty family-friendly spot in Phuket, Kata Beach offers clear seas, white sands, plentiful accommodation options, lots of good food, and endless activities. There’s a wave park right at the beach entrance where you can rent surfboards or SUPs (Stand Up Paddleboards) and take lessons. Try acro-yoga on the beach then take to the water to snorkel, surf, and scuba dive. The south end of the beach is more relaxed if all that activity just seems too…active. INSIDER TIP - If the kids need a break from the sand, there’s a community park just across from the beach with jungle gyms.
Ao Sane One of Phuket’s prettiest little beaches, this is tucked around the horn from Nai Harn; it’s not a huge beach and has lots of places for shade. There’s a decent little restaurant a few steps away so you can easily spend a dreamy day sunbathing, snorkeling, and swimming, barely moving from your spot for pretty papaya shakes and drinks and a light lunch of crab curry. INSIDER TIP - Allow time to explore. There’s plenty to see in this area, including the Big Buddha, Karon Viewpoint, Promthep Cape, and more.
Ya Nui Another Phuket beauty, Ya Nui in the south of Phuket Island is a tiny beach that is split into two bays by a rock formation. It may be small but there are a few different sections to choose from: a cove to the left, a flat stretch in the middle, and some rocks to the right (where you’ll find good snorkeling). The water is that perfect blue-green, the setting features an island backdrop and grassy slopes, the attitude is relaxed and easy, and tiny thatch-roof restaurants serve up drinks and ice cream—what more could you need?
Nai Harn At the southern tip of Phuket, almost two hours from the airport, this crescent of pristine white beach is off-the-beaten tourist track (which makes it worth the trek); think, “jungle-covered mountain backdrop, sailboats anchored in the distance when it’s season, a high-end resort on one end, and a lookout point with a windmill marking the other side.” The water is calm and clear with an occasional gentle wave. There are a few beachside restaurants where you can grab a coconut and bring it right down to the beach, or sit around in lounge chairs sipping Singhas with locals. There’s beach volleyball in the evenings, and sunset happy hour at the Rock Salt. It’s an easy, gorgeous spot to holiday for a while, and we recommend renting mopeds to explore the surrounding area.
Laem Singh This hidden cove is accessible only by boat from Surin Beach (because the neighboring landowner doesn’t want tourists traipsing through his trees!). As small as this beach is, there are still lounge chairs and boogie boards for rent, in addition to a restaurant with decent food and drinks complete with very pretty views. Even on a cloudy day, Laem Singh feels tropical, with trees hugging the beach and turquoise waters lapping at the shore. When the waves are up, it makes a stellar spot for a bodyboarding. INSIDER TIP - If you want to get a look at this spot from above (and snap an excellent selfie), get on a scooter and stop at the Laem Singh View Point.
Koh Yao Noi Remarkably untouristed despite its location just an hour’s boat ride from Phuket, Koh Yao Noi is the remote beach you’ve been dreaming of. While there’s internet in many of the guesthouses, this is a destination where you’ll find it easy to disconnect—fall asleep to the sounds of gently lapping waves, not a pumping bass. Rent a scooter and explore the island. Check out the little beach shacks along the beach, where you can get a simple lunch and have a dip in the calm waters. Find deserted stretches of beach that you can have all to yourself. Explore mountains and rainforests in the center of the island, and stop to photograph rubber plantations, rice paddies, palm trees and water buffalo. Stay at a backpacker-ish yoga shala for a weeks’ retreat, or kick it up a notch and stay at the Six Senses.
Koh Bon Less than an hour’s boat ride from Rawai on the southeast coast of Phuket, Koh Bon is one of the smaller islands of the Similan Islands but delivers big on the basic necessities for a great beach day, with natural beauty, pristine sands, swings, and palm trees. Bring some supplies from a mini-mart in Rawai and just ask (offer to pay) your longtail driver to hang out for a few hours (he most likely will, closely moored to the other drivers, happily having a chat with his feet up). You might share this stretch of beach with some picnicking locals or a few couples posing for wedding photos, but otherwise it’s likely all yours.
Bottle Beach Arrive by boat to this secluded cove known as the best beach on Koh Phangnan, a lifetime away from the raging Full Moon Parties on the south side of the island. Spend days snorkeling, kayaking, or hiking through the hills behind the beach, and your evenings just chilling and soaking in the serenity. (Long-tail boats deliver day tourists, but in the evening they depart and this end of the island empties out.) INSIDER TIP - This beach can also be accessed by motorbike, but it’s difficult, dangerous, and not recommended. Take a boat instead!
Haad Salad The polar opposite of Haad Rin and its banging Full Moon Parties, Haad Salad is just a tiny, quiet cove, perfect for snorkeling and lazing the day away, waiting for the perfect pink splash of sunset. The beach here is perfection: white sandy bay with shallow, crystal-clear waters, shouldered by green cliffs. A great place to spend your time before and after the Full Moon Party and an even better place to just avoid it altogether.
Silver Beach Koh Samui has plenty of long white sandy beaches populated with resorts, restaurants, massage parlors, and nightlife, but if you want a little break from the tropical hustle and bustle, visit Silver Beach, also known as Thong Takian Beach. Located in Crystal Bay Cove, between Lamai and Chaweng, Silver Beach is calm and quiet; its silver-white sands are dotted with boulders, and it’s bordered by jungle. Activity options include snorkeling, kayaking, and getting a relaxing massage under the shade of a tree on the beach.
Koh Tao’s Beaches Koh Tao, meaning “turtle island,” is the place for all things diving and getting your PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) certification, but it’s also known for its spectacular beaches. Spend some time on Shark Bay Beach and snorkel with blacktip reef sharks and green turtles in turquoise water. Sai Daeng Beach is one of Koh Tao’s best beaches for marine life, as is Ao Leuk, which has a small entry fee (but it’s worth it for the lounge chairs, cold drinks, and pretty beach). INSIDER TIP - In December and January, there are tiny jellyfish that populate the coast, but the little guys are harmless.
Lonely Beach A backpacker-favorite for decades, Lonely Island on the eastern side of Thailand, has become slightly more upmarket, and it’s not so lonely anymore. The beach is beautiful, clean, uncrowded, and fringed with palm trees so it’s the perfect place to refine your beach bum skills. There’s a nightlife scene if you want to partake, with a few funky cocktail bars, and, if you’re lucky you can float in phosphorescence under the moonlight (a particularly popular pastime here).
Koh Kood The fifth largest island in Thailand, but still relatively undeveloped, Koh Kood (also known as Koh Kut) is in the Gulf of Thailand, north of the maritime border with Cambodia. The island’s main beaches are spread out along the west and south coasts and while there isn’t one agreed-upon best beach, favorites include the lively Klong Chao and the picturesque Ao Noi. Snorkel, sunbathe, swim, and just snooze and when you tire of that, hike to Klong Yai Ki Waterfalls, or venture around the island to Ao Salat or Ao Yai fishing villages for barbequed fresh catches.
Koh Kradan Just off Trang Province, this island is picture-postcard Thailand. Here, you’ll find powdery white sand and views across calm waters to the islands Ko Ngai, Ko Muk (which is a nice place to visit to explore the Emerald Cave), Ko Libong, and a few karst islets like Ko Lao Liang and Ko Phetra. Most of this island is part of the Hat Chao Mai National Park, and so it’s undeveloped. There are no cars or ATMs, just a few resorts, bungalows, and beaches galore. One of the most noteworthy is Ao Chong Lom Beach, or Sunset Beach, which is memorable for its—you guessed it—gorgeous sunsets. INSIDER TIP - Visit (or avoid) Koh Kradan around Valentine’s Day for its annual Underwater Wedding Ceremony, when couples from around the world swim up the aisle together. To participate, you and your partner must be certified divers.
Koh Mai Phai Located between Krabi coast and the Phi Phi islands and also—misleadingly—known as Bamboo Island (the main flora here are Casuarinas trees), this tiny, heart-shaped island is home to a quiet and beautiful beach that gives off desert-island feels. Snorkel in the reef with hawksbill sea turtles, lionfish, and leopard sharks, and then head back to the bar shack on the north side for some nibbles and a cold beer. - Erin Gifford/fodors.com – You can follow BangkokJack on Instagram, Twitter & Reddit. The Time I Learnt That Toes Could Explode
My last blog post was all about a trail run and this one is going to be no different. Four and a half weeks have passed since the Vietnam Jungle Marathon and a couple of weeks ago I completed 103km at The Moon 100 in Koh Phangan; the first of four in the four trails series organised by Teelakow.
But first back to Vietnam and the recovery, or rather, the lack of recovery. I couldn’t quite believe how much I struggled after this trail run; I’ve never felt aches or pains like it. Somehow how I managed to run the day after, and continued to do so for the rest of the week, but my body wasn’t thanking me for it, and it was only on Thursday or Friday where I felt I could complete a run with ease.
The second week was much better and I managed a very good overall distance, due to running twice most days, and covering more than my daily average three or four times a day. The next week was just as good and I even managed to squeeze in a pilates class and a sports massage, in advance of the Koh Phangan trail. I opted for a pre-race massage, thinking this would be lighter and less painful than my previous experiences and I thought I was in luck, as the woman started working on my back ever so gently, but it turns out she was just lulling me in to a false sense of security and later continued to hurt me just as much as she did every single time. The massage was just before my flight, and I arrived in Koh Samui feeling sleepy and sore. I soon woke up as I arrived at the ferry and took in the cool air and fresh ocean breeze as we made our way to Koh Phangan. At this point I was contemplating not running, and staying in my lovely hotel, with a pool overlooking the ocean, and drinking my body weight in cocktails.
Obviously I didn’t end up doing this, and the following day I went for a very short 4km run before getting my head down and cracking on with work. I might have been on a paradise island but life went on as normal; it was a Friday, so a normal working day resumed, and I had lots to be getting on with. In between emails and calls, I dreamt about carb loading and went for what turned out to be a very disappointing falafel and hummus lunch. Falafel and hummus are two of my favourite things ever and they should never be disappointing. I had lunch in a bakery opposite the start and finish line, and watched as the organisers got everything together in advance of the briefing and flag off later that night. Before going to collect my race kit, I purchased some homemade vegan energy balls from the shop with the aim of taking them with me on the race. Turns out they only made it as far as the end of the road; they were far too delicious not to eat all in one go. But it’s ok, I was carb loading (I love that excuse).
Later that evening I went to the briefing, bumped in to the lovely Teelakow photographer who I’ve met at previous races, and then wondered what on earth I would do with the remaining six hours. At this point I realised I should have checked myself in for another night at the hotel so I could at least get some sleep; I initially thought at 6pm check out would be sufficient but I was already feeling so very sleepy. So I went off in the search for food and tried my luck at falafel and hummus again, which I’m pleased to say turned out much better than attempt number one. After this, I went to find out where I could get a massage and paid for a two hour massage so that I could sleep and pass the time. After this I walked around, ate peanuts (mainly as a result of boredom but again I will use the excuse of carb loading) and slowly began to lose the will to live, until I bumped in to Tom; a fellow runner who I follow on my IG. I’ve said before that I love the wonderfully small world of trail running and the community it brings with it and this evidenced it first hand; Tom recognised me from my posts on my InItForTheLongRun2019 IG account and knew I was doing this race, so he hung out with me until it was time for the 103km to set off and go!
The first part of the route was around a 10km flat run; something which would usually irritate me on a trail run, but this time I was happy; the longer we spent out of the jungle in the dark, the better. Setting off at midnight was new to me and the thought of five or six hours alone, in the jungle, in the dark, was not filling me with joy. I know I am slow when I set off and I was worried that I would get left behind; it doesn’t normally bother me on the trail and I like having the time to climb and descend at my own pace without people right up behind me, but this time I wanted to stay with the group so that I would have someone to follow.
I reached the first checkpoint in good time, although it wasn’t actually clear that it was a checkpoint and so I didn’t actually realise at the time. So when I started to reach the cut-off for check point one I started to worry, thinking that I was going to miss it and fail at the very first hurdle. However, this, on the other hand, meant that I was well happy when I arrived at check point two, as it meant that I covered more distance than I thought, and I was making very good time too.
However, on the way to checkpoint two I had to deal with the normal frustrations of everyone racing down ahead of me. Once again, I didn’t take my hiking poles, and once again, I regretted this as soon as I was faced with a very steep descent. Note to self: buy hiking poles and TAKE THEM WITH YOU. OTHERWISE YOU WILL BE SLOW. I lose SO much time going down, because I don’t have the confidence to run without poles. I did run a little and I fell, on a flat part of the trail. Which is why I don’t run when it’s super steep, because I have literally zero balance.
The rest of the checkpoints have all sort of blurred in to one; mainly because I have a terrible memory and I have left it so long to write about this, and partly because it wasn’t a particularly memorable race. Actually, I’m being kind, it was probably my least enjoyable race so far. The route was boring and the terrain wasn’t fun; the trails were extremely overgrown and a lot of time was spent running up and down very slippery clay paths. The fact that we set off at midnight meant that we spent the first five or six hours running in the dark, which quickly became very dull, and I also copped for another round of darkness on the second night. We began the race running next to the ocean; and although I could appreciate the sound, the smell and the cool breeze, it really would have been lovely to actually enjoy the view. There were very little viewpoints on the trail which was a real let down; when you climb up a massive hill you want to be rewarded with something nice at the top of it; that’s kind of the point!
There were a few positives, however. One very memorable part was the run through the national park which was stunning, and led us to one of the few viewpoints, which was spectacular. After the viewpoint I reached the top of the waterfall and dived right in; soaking up the cool water and enjoying how it eased my aches and pains. As always, I also met some wonderful people on the route and I am so thankful for the group of Thai runners who took me under their wing from CP 6. This was the CP after the toughest spike (which I actually really enjoyed), and where we could collect our drop bag; which meant a much-needed change of clothes and some treats; although my treats were vegan biscuits which turned out to be pretty disappointing. Anyway, I set off feeling refreshed and ready to go; despite the darkness which had enveloped us, but one of the guys stopped me and asked if I had a buddy, as he was worried about me running on my own. I told him I was fine, and I was actually feeling surprisingly confident after running for the first six hours on my own in the dark, but he insisted that he would catch up with me after he finished eating, which I didn’t doubt, especially as we were going downhill. As I reached the bottom of the next trail, a wave of tiredness came over me and I had to sit down and take some time to rest my eyes, and at one point I almost fell asleep. Somehow I managed to find the energy to get up and get going, and that’s when I heard Pleum and his friends behind me. After I reached the top they told me that they weren’t going to leave me, and by this point I was ever so grateful. It meant that it took much longer to complete the route; we were a big group and we stopped every time someone wanted to take a rest, but I actually enjoyed the companionship of running in such a strong friendship group, rather than competing for time or a good finishing place like I usually do.
However, despite the company, it was at this point where I was close to calling it a day. My feet were unbearably sore (even worse after the descent to CP 6 where I actually felt my little toe explode) and I was struggling to keep my eyes open. We reached a 7/11 en route and instead of going in to buy treats, I took full advantage of the five or ten minutes that everyone else was in the shop and rested my eyes. Eventually we made it to CP 7; by this point everyone was ready for a rest, and I had half an hour of blissful sleep, even if it was laying on the gravel floor in the middle of nowhere.
Thirty minutes later and our alarms woke us; I tried to persuade the group to let us have five or ten more minutes but one guy was insistent that we should leave right that second. I didn’t have time to get any water or reapply my gels and I barely had time to eat; other than a slice of bread which I grabbed as we left for the next CP, so I was feeling a little frustrated and wondered why we were in such a hurry. However, on reflection, it’s a really good job he rushed us the way he did; even though we had a lot of time to make it to the next CP, the next part of the trail was really horrible. We had to climb waterfalls in the dark which was actually pretty scary, and another reason why I was so thankful for the company of a group, especially when I fell backwards in to a pool of water, and was quickly pulled back on to my feet by the lovely Ekky. When we finished climbing up waterfalls we started to make our way back down and we all thought we were reaching the end of this section. In turns out we were very wrong and we ended up back in the waterfalls once more; making all of us doubt whether or not we were going the right way. This was another frustrating thing about this route; it was extremely repetitive and not very well sign posted; there were many times even during the day that I got lost and had to re-route myself, and I heard many others tell similar tales. This was probably the longest part of the race so far; it felt unsafe and it wasn’t enjoyable. By this time we had added numbers to our group and we were all really struggling, so it was a huge relief when we finally reached the next CP, which, I thought was the final one. But it turns out I was wrong, so you can online imagine how I felt when we I discovered that we actually had another 20+km to go, rather than the 12km beach run finale, which we almost didn’t make due to cut off times. The next part of the route was extremely boring, followed by extremely brutal; there was no in between. The final climb before the descent to the checkpoint was excruciatingly tough; I actually enjoyed it, but it’s something we could have done with much earlier in the race when we all had energy. At one point we had to push our entire bodies against the hill to make sure we could dig our hands and feet in to it, in order to be able to climb up it; there was nothing to hold on to, and the tree roots that were there were extremely lose and could’ve resulted in us tumbling back down the hill, which obviously none of us wanted.
We arrived at the final CP caked in mud, sweat, cuts and bruises. I am so relieved that we made this CP; despite wanting to drop out earlier in the race I would have been devastated to make it so far and not be able to complete. By this point my feet were in absolutely agony and I wasn’t sure how I was going to finish the final 12km run along the beach; I wanted to get treated by the nurse but the group were keen to get going and I wanted to finish with them. So I stuffed my blisters, bruises and peeling skin back in to my running shoes, and hobbled off along the beach. The first part was great; people cheering us and welcoming us back like we were coming back from war (it certainly looked like we’d been at war). However, this soon wore thin as the 12km felt long; much longer than a standard12km, especially as running on sand is painful at the best of times and, although we could see the finish line in the very far distance, it didn’t seem to be getting any closer. As with all of my trail runs, I started to question my sanity, I swore lots, I cried a little bit. My body wasn’t hurting; even my hip remained pain free for the entire route which was absolutely delightful; I can’t remember the last time I didn’t have hip pain, especially on such a long and brutal run. But my feet were unbearably sore and as soon as I crossed the finish line, I headed straight for the nurses station for some help with my blistered and torn skin. My feet were pretty banged up for days after; normally I can run (or at the very least hobble) the day after a race, but I could barely even walk. I cycled for three days and on the fourth day managed to get out for a run, but even now, one week later, they’re still very, very sore. Safe to say, my runners went straight in the bin and I’m now on the search for a pair which won’t torture me like those ones did for the entire 103km.
I set off on my journey back to Bangkok about four hours after finishing the race; not my most sensible decision but I had to get back for work the next day as I had an extremely busy week coming up. I was in pain for the entire journey and in the airport I was offered a wheelchair which I politely declined, so instead I was bundled in to the back of a buggy (which was a difficult task in itself because I could barely climb up in to the thing) and at one point I was nearly taken to first aid. But despite all of that, it was nice to see other runners, both on the ferry back to Samui and waiting in the airport to board their flights back home (also reassuring to know there were other mad people who thought it would be a good idea to travel back the same day). I spoke to lots of fellow runners; some who finished and some who did not, and was congratulated by many as I was wearing my finisher t-shirt. There were so many DNF’s on this route, and although I took almost the entire 36 hours to complete the race, I still placed quite highly due to the fact that 125 people did not complete; I was one of only 93 which managed to cross the finish line. Another ultra under my belt, with lots more still to go.
Distance covered so far: 2,870.36km Distance still to run: 4629.64km

The Barre 2 Barre Academy Diaries: Magdalane Xie & Lynette Chan (Part III)
Today’s blog post features an interview with two of our loyal and passionate barrerinas, Magdalene Xie and Lynette Chan. Magdalene and Lynette attended Barre 2 Barre’s recent Thailand Teacher Training Retreat and reflect on the deep physical and mental work they underwent there and their transformational experience. Our next teacher training is coming soon, from June 8th to 11th in Taiwan (in Mandarin Chinese)! Early bird prices are available until May 8th. Read on for inspiration, and see if you too would like to earn a BarreAmped certification this June!
Tell us about your journey with barre and towards attending teacher training with Barre 2 Barre.
Magdalene: I haven’t been the sporty or fit type for most of my life - just slightly lucky to be slim and tall enough for people to assume I don’t need to workout to stay in shape. When you get older, however, being fit is about so much more than looking a certain way. My grandmother and mum do not have the best postures, and I’ve seen how it inconveniences their daily lives. Now, I’m just working towards being healthy and strong so that I am able to enjoy everything that I want to.
I’ve become more aware of having the right form and applying what I have learned in barre to my everyday life (for example, not putting extra pressure on my spine by overarching my lower back to cause pain and discomfort over time).
Lynette: I started ballet lessons at the age of six and continued dancing into my early twenties, which led to lower back pain even after I stopped, probably due to bad form and insufficient emphasis on core-strengthening. When I discovered barre as a workout a few years ago, I was thrilled to return to something somewhat familiar, yet still new and challenging! One class led to another and my interest in the BarreAmped technique grew because of its emphasis on form, alignment, and precision. When the teacher training was announced, I signed up for it wanting to enhance my own knowledge of the method.
What new and useful discoveries did you make about yourself and/or your barre practice at the Koh Samui teacher training?
Magdalene: Everyone’s range of movement is different due to each individual’s body/bone structure, and I’ve learned to push myself to my own limitations. I’ve always known the core holds up our trunk and that having a strong core is important, but I learned that it is also what stabilizes the spine, glutes, pelvic floor, and so much more. We need a balance of both front and back body strength in order for our spine to maintain it’s optimal position. These are facts I wouldn’t have known had I not attended the teacher training!
Lynette: One of the main things I've learned is that being a barre instructor is not easy (don’t take your instructors for granted haha)! From giving the right cues to spotting and correcting bad form, teachers’ skills rely not only on experience, but also on a tremendous wealth of knowledge, which the BarreAmped method has strong foundations in. I became more aware of my own form and understood the barre exercises I have been practicing on a much deeper level, in relation to human anatomy.
What were the highlights of your experience at the Teacher Training?
Magdalene: Anatomy workshops with Steve (our demo skeleton)!
An island snorkeling trip at Koh Tan Island!
TRX class!
The NON-HEALTHY fun dinner at Four Seasons Resorts after we completed our Level 1 exam!
The AM S.I.L.E.N.T T.I.M.E
The bunch of uniquely fabulous ladies who got confused between knee-ups and seated chair!
(in no particular order)
I could go on!
Lynette: There were so many highlights! What I loved most, though, was the sense of community and comradery that developed quickly yet firmly during the trip. Some of us still make it a point to meet for dinner, drinks, and brunch from time to time, and go for classes at Barre 2 Barre together when we can.
What are your future goals with barre and Barre 2 Barre? What does your barre practice mean to you?
Magdalene: I want to continue to deepen my knowledge of barre for my own education and maybe even share with others what I’ve learned one day. I’ve discovered my barre practice to be my only personal time where I experience my mind listening to my body and I’m fully aware and present. I’ve never felt that with any other practice so far.
Lynette: My next goal would be to do my apprenticeship and proceed to the next level of teacher training, so that I can deepen my understanding of BarreAmped and the quality of my instruction. When I started barre, I never thought I would take my practice as seriously as I do now, but my barre journey has come to represent my own personal growth. I look forward to my barre classes as time that I carve out for myself, to strengthen myself both physically and mentally.

The Project International: Nai Harn Hotel, Phuket
Tell us about the scope of the project – what it entailed, how long it took, how much it cost?
It was an 18 month project from start to finish, during which time we completed renovation of the hotel including rooms, public areas, restaurants and pool. It’s such an iconic hotel and we are delighted to have taken it over. It is with a strong sense of responsibility we have done this and we will be respecting the heritage of the resort as well as looking to the future with design innovations that will make the most of its incredible location.
Importantly too we will be fully embracing Southern Thai art and culture and bringing it into the resort experience both inside and outside of the resort so that guests can feel relaxed, inspired and engaged by the history and natural context of the destination.
Have you ever worked on a hotel renovation before?
Yes, the company owns a brand called Manathai and we renovated our hotels in Phuket, Khao Lak and Koh Samui. They are beautiful lcoations and each has its own distinctive feel and sense of location. We work to give each property a sense of locality, and authenticity and keep their own individuality as much as possible.
What were the hair-raising moments, or major challenges?
The biggest challenge by far was to ensure we stick to our initial timeline, which we met, on schedule to open on December 28th, as on some days during monsoon season less work could be done due to the weather conditions. It was a challenge for sure, and certainly something that had to be carefully managed as much as possible.
During the build process, how many people were working on the project?
At peak times we had over 700 workers on the project – so it’s been fairly full on. But we are seeing the results of our hard work now and it feels incredible.
What is your favourite part of undertaking a project such as this?
To be involved from the planning phase until the execution and then finally see the end product, and hearing the fantastic feedback from guests – that’s the real reward.
What is you background in hospitality, in detail?
After graduating from high school in Germany I obtained a degree in hospitality management. I then worked in various management positions in hotels in London (Savoy), Switzerland, Germany (Kempinski Berlin) the Middle East and Thailand (Sukhothai Bangkok, Laguna Beach Resort Phuket) .
What made you become an ex-pat to move your career to Phuket?
A job opportunity as GM came up 8 years ago and since then I have been in Phuket. I have really come to appreciate the culture here, the warm and gracious nature of Thai people – it’s a lovely place to live.
Tell us about the team – how many people working at the hotel?
We started with our pre-opening phase back in March when we hired our GM and over the months the team grew and we are currently employing 170 staff.
Tell us about the interiors of the hotel, what inspired the designs, what are the rooms like?
It’s set on a tropical hillside rainforest opposite Promthep Cape, and offers a great deal of privacy – it is rather serene here really. There are 130 guest luxury rooms and suites – these are the largest sea facing hotel rooms on the island. All oversized guestrooms overlook the Andaman Sea, dotted with islands and sailboats, and are designed to open up the whole room, including the bathroom space, to the view outside, with a four-poster daybed on the terrace providing the perfect vantage point.
Every detail has been considered from the designer bathroom products, private barbecues on the terrace and beach-side butler service. There is a ‘press for champagne’ button on the terrace – as a special amenity. There are freeform sculptural furniture and art pieces throughout which add texture throughout the resort while high ceilings and glass façades seamlessly work to integrate the beach and sea outside in a celebration of the environment.
Tell us about the food experiences available?
With a total of six dining experiences for guests from the all-day dining restaurant to the 50-metre rooftop deck and destination dining, guests can choose from a lavish selection of Thai and international dishes, including fresh seafood and bold gourmet creations.
From the resort’s main restaurant, Cosmo, to stylish Rock Salt at the water’s edge, each dining venue has been carefully designed to capitalise on the stunning views. We are delighted to welcome Kevin Jean Fawkes as the culinary director of The Nai Harn – his background is impressive to say the least. He worked in the great British kitchen of Anton Edelman at the Savoy Hotel London as well as stints at cutting edge restaurants by Sir Terence Conran, Gordon Ramsay, Jason Atherton, Albert Roux and René Redzepi.
His culinary journey also includes stops in Asia, Europe and the Middle East with luxury hotels including Raffles, Kempinski and Rosewood, not to mention his work at the recently named world’s best restaurant, Noma. Rock Salt will be Chef Fawkes’ signature playground, which will feature dishes showcasing cuisine from around the Asia-Pacific region. Separate menus for lunch and dinner with seaside classics, innovative tapas and everything in between – all served right at the ocean’s edge.
At lunch, the focus is on Thai modern classics and international favourites, including wood-fired pizzas, tandoori baked seafood and market seafood display from the Rawai fisherman. As the sun sets, Rock Salt transitions into Nai Harn Beach’s premier chill-out destination. Patrons enjoy a menu inspired by the culinary traditions of the Eastern Mediterranean and North Africa with a dash of Thai influence in a relaxed al fresco ambiance.
Chef Fawkes will also be tasked with ensuring the Nai Harn’s other main restaurant, Cosmo, and its menu reflects the chef’s passion for travel and new cultural experiences, while an underpinning of Southern Thai flavours pays homage to The Nai Harn’s rich Phuket heritage. Freshly prepared breakfast specialities; delicately marinated seafood and healthy salads for lunch; and exquisite Thai cuisine throughout the day.
Also at Nai Harn we are committed to ethical cuisine. Guests will be able to indulge in the world’s most exclusive fois gras, without the guilt. A first to create all the exquisiteness of foie gras without force-feeding, Spanish producers Sussa & Labourdette has learnt how to farm the happy, free-range geese. Able to roam wild thanks to their migratory cycle, the farm creates an environment so comfortable no need or want for the geese to leave. With the aid of a specialist foie gras importer from some of the finest localities in Europe to Thailand, the The Nai Harn will be fortunate enough to be able to serve their guests this preferential product and further promote ethical foie gras to the luxury hospitality industry.
The Nai Harn has also tapped into the expertise of one of the world’s most famous barmen, Mr Salim Khoury, who was the head barman at the American Bar at The Savoy in London for 34 years. He has been engaged to organise the set up, training and preparation of cocktail lists at all bars at and will be in residence for one month following the opening.
What has the early reception with customers been like?
Great customer feedback – we feel very positive going forward and are very much looking forward to a fantastic 2016.
Where do you see the hotel in five years, in terms of business progress?
One of the leading resort hotels (non villa) in Thailand and Asia is certainly where we plan to be. And I think we’re on track for that – we’ve taken what was already an iconic location and hotel and taken it up a level for today’s discerning traveller. We’ve tried to think of everything and it’s really something special.
Would you consider another such project?
Yes definitely, if it has a similar potential like the current project. It’s been a great challenge but also incredibly rewarding. We started with a phenomenal product though, a hotel directly on a beach, an iconic property that has hosted some of the world’s most famous faces. It’s been a joy to reinvigorate this hotel and return it to its iconic glory.
