DCLM DAILY MANNA 19th January 2023 DEVOTIONAL

MESSAGE: A general in the army wanted to do a social experiment to prove that people would respect him whether he wore his uniforms or not. He instructed his driver to carry a junior officer in his personal car that was equipped with sirens. Meanwhile, he sneaked out in his friend’s car in mufti. To his amazement, everyone saluted the junior officer and no one noticed him in his friend’s car while in mufti. He found out that people respected and showed allegiance to his office once he wore his uniform, but as soon as he wore civillian clothes, he was treated as an ordinary person. Moses, in rehearsing the laws of God to the would-be inheritors of the Promised Land, made them to understand that it was only in keeping of God’s word that their preservation in the land was guaranteed. It was like giving them a complete manual or owner’s guide that would enable them to maximise their enjoyment of the privileges God had in store for them in the Promised Land. God demanded full obedience to His word from them. They were charged to neither add (any superstition or human idea) to the word nor deduct (by omission any inconvenient part) from it. The Israelites needed to be reminded of the grievous judgment that was visited on those who indulged in idolatry at Baalpeor and also the impudent Israelite and Medianitish lady slain by Phinehas to which they were witnesses. They had also witnessed the blessings of obedience as was the case of Phinehas and the Levites. In God’s economy, God’s blessing and punishment are conditional. Once a person fulfils the condition of His promise, he/she is bound to receive the dividends of obedience. However, when a person flaunts the commandments, he/she reaps the attendant consequences. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Complete obedience to God compels divine blessings. 3. Ashok Sundari

There is a wonderful ancient Hindu mythology that describes how Ashok Sundari came to be. Padma Purana tells Ashok Sundari’s story. The scriptures say Goddess Parvati asks Lord Shiva to bring her to the most beautiful garden.

Parvati follows Shiva to Nandanvana, where the Kalpavriksha tree was. Goddess Parvati requested a daughter when confronting this wish-granting tree.

The tree gave her Ashok Sundari. She was supposed to marry Nahusha of the lunar dynasty, and their wedding sets off a chain reaction of events. Nahusha equaled Indra, the monarch of heaven. Ashok Sundari married Nahusha.

4. Sukesh

Lord Shiva and Parvati’s third son is Sukesh. The Hindu Puranas say his parents abandoned Sukesh. Shiva and Parvati rescued a homeless, abandoned youngster. Sukesh was the one who initiated all evil actions in their later life.

5. Jalandhar

The Shrimad Bhagwat Purana says Lord Shiva fathered Jalandhar. The birth, however, did not occur in the usual way. The Purana claims that Jalandhar was created when Shiva threw himself into the sea.

Jalandhar was feared and powerful, unlike other Lord Shiva kids. His mother, Brinda, only believed in patriarchal religion. No deity could defeat him.

Jalandhar planned to overthrow Vishnu and steal Goddess Lakshmi. However, Lord Vishnu destroyed Brinda’s Patriarchal religion. Shiva killed Jalandhar.

6. Ayyappa

He is among the most loved and worshipped Gods in Southern India. Ayyappa, born Sastav, was Shiva’s son. Lord Shiva got distracted upon viewing Vishnu’s siren form, according to Hindu scripture. Parad, Lord Shiva’s energy, became Ayyappa.

7. Bhuma

Lord Shiva’s three forearm sweat drops dropped on Earth while meditating on Mount Kailash’s cliff, according to Hindu legend. Earth has a gorgeous four-armed child with blood-red skin. This cherished offspring of the planet set out to ensure the safety and well-being of its home.

However, after much prayer and dedication, this child granted Lok to Mars (Mangal).

8. Andhaka

The Hindu Scriptures tell the intriguing account of Andhaka, one of Lord Shiva’s children. Goddess Parvati played fully closed Lord Shiva’s eyes while meditating on Mount Kailas. Shiva called their sweat-born child Andhaka.

Andhaka would be blind forever because Shiva conceived him with his eyes closed, according to Shiva. Andhaka signifies gloom. However, because Shiva was well aware of Andhaka’s terrible characteristics, he gave him to a demon to nurture as his child.

Andhaka became powerful. His devotion to Lord Brahma gave him practically everything except immortality. Andhaka’s collapse could only have come from wanting something he shouldn’t. Andhaka continued his journey and eventually found Shiva and Parvati, both of whom he wanted to keep. Lord Shiva and Devi Parvati were both infuriated by this, and a violent conflict erupted between them. Andhaka was defeated.

FROM THE EYES OF THANATOS

thanatos was not a being who strayed far from his station in life, he was someone who was wedded intimately with his work, and could not find the time to dally them away. however, there were extenuating circumstances, always has been - and they always, infuriatingly, began with zagreus. hades never really spoke about his son beyond irate murmurs of his disruptions of the ill-begotten peace or, more recently, of his subsequent escape.

he cared not for the deeds of zagreus. not when he had bested the furies. not when he defeated the lernean bone hydra, not when he had defeated the champion of elysium or defeating the god of the underworld himself. other gods would have roared their joy and delight at the virility of their offspring, praised their achievements with ambrosia and nectar flowing freely.

but that is not what hades did. all he did was hunch over his desk, scrawling over endless piles of scrolls for a work that never ceased. beyond that, it seemed that hades had washed his hands of his offspring, leaving him to do what he wished in the world above.

if he wished to debase himself and pursue fruitless heroics like the offspring of the olympians - do so, he did not care.

“you do not seem remarkable.” thanatos spoke into the open air, startling the mortal groundskeep who pattered around the small kitchen with a chicken in their arms.  they flinch, enough that the hen is able to squirm free and cower underneath the table with a fearful cluck!

the apple trees shuddered outside shied away from the clouding sun, the wind trembled. thanatos knows the matter of his presence, knows that wherever he steps, silence follows - for peaceful death was often quiet. the air felt far colder than before, in spite of the midday sun. and all the mortal could do was bow their head respectfully. “lord thanatos.” they were soft-spoken, words feathery that hardly rose above the curls of smoke from embers smouldering. their eyes remained downcast, pinned firmly on the ground and unmoving.

if thanatos was a lesser being, he could’ve mistaken the mortal for being a statue - if not for their living colour and the subtle rise and fall of their breath. 

“do you wish for me to fetch prince zagreus? he is resting in his room.”

conversation was hardly the tool of his trade, and many would be hard-pressed to elicit more than succinct sentences or monosyllabic responses. a conversation with a statue would glean more than one with thanatos. “no.”

confusion halts the mortal’s reverence, tilting their head up to stare at thanatos, straightening in place, spine unfurling like a sapling freed from the throes of a hurricane.

to his eye, the mortal was unassuming. plain-looking, boasting no beauty that would make poets weep, nor with a voice that could charm sirens. they were, unequivocally, average.

gods always gravitated towards the remarkable, yet here the groundskeep was, an antithesis towards a previously cemented notion. they were not aggressive, not brave, not out-spoken, nor overtly clever from their brief interactions (he unspooled their life like a scroll, reading their memories like prophecy). nothing about them made them stand above the nameless masses. 

yet word flows freely from one shade to the next, word of the new destiny that his sisters, the Fates, were unravelling. that was the thing about mortals, they may have their destiny predestined, but the paths that they take to that eventual end can differ and sometimes, they could change their destiny.

not like them, not like the gods - both freed and trapped by their divinity.

nevertheless, this sort of inanity was a gift, he supposed. the eyes of gods were rarely kind ones and to scorn one of them... well, the countless tails of minor deities and mortals being turned to nameless monstrosities to be slain by upstart heroes.

the mortal shifts in place uneasily, their hands clasped behind their backs, but with the way their muscles shifted under skin told thanatos that they were grasping their hands together uneasily. they were not used to this manner of scrutiny.

there was a part of him that disliked the mortal, that despised that secret jealousy that was born from: what was so good about the surface world? gods were a prideful and jealous folk, and thanatos was no exception to the rule, he simply hid it better than most. 

“do you wish for tea?” the mortal asks carefully, rocking from heel to ball of their feet, they do not smile, but their eyes speak of kindness. it’s an offer that surprises, but one he did not simply have time for.

besides, the nourishment offered in the mortal realm often paled in comparison to the immortal one.

the hen, which had gathered its courage, plucks at the flowing reaper cloth that clung to his form. a nameless rage befalls over him, and it is with one fell swoop, blood splatters in an artful arch on the floor, over the mortal, staining their chiton with spots of crimson.

he was not prone towards acts of unwarranted violence like this, but it was a substitute of what he wanted to do to the mortal. thanatos hides his shame of calm lost with an impassive expression, expression not shifting with the aghast and terrified look that the mortal gave at the way the hen fell lifeless. its soul shuddered as it shed its flesh vessel, flickering like the dying of a candle.

without further word, death incarnate disappears with a flash of light and the ear-splitting sound of a bell.

zagreus finds him, hours later near the river. time had always moved so strangely for gods, and what appear to be hours for mortals was simply minutes to his kind. death had always been inextricably drawn to life, vice versa, and he knows - the moment the grass shifts, the air whispers, that he was found.

“you didn’t have to do that, than. you didn’t have to... frighten them, threaten them.” thanatos does not turn around, content on staring out at the expanse of untamed woods, something that he was sure that lady artemis would find delight with hunting in.

his grip on his scythe tightens, “my presence is threatening enough. besides... i did not do anything much, it was time for their pet to die anyways.”

the prince stands next to him, shorter, but presence imposing enough. he looked angry, displeased with what he had done. “you could’ve waited! you didn’t have to kill it in front of the groundskeep - what’s wrong with you? you... you’ve never done this before, than.”

thanatos purses his lips, “you are a coward, zagreus. running away from your problems, running away from home,” running away from me without a goodbye.

“so take it out on me!” zagreus thumps his chest, flames flickering at his laurel wreath, teeth bared, “not on the damn mortal who couldn’t even lift a finger to fight back!” his hands flex, as though ready to fight back.

and it was that moment that truly hurt than. was zagreus truly prepared to leave them all, to wash his hands of the underworld? just for this world, and his mother and that mortal.

oh blood and darkness, how humiliating. was he... was he jealous?

his pain must have filtered through his mask; for zagreus had frozen, expression dropping in surprise. “than--- wait.”

but it was all for naught, thanatos disappeared in a familiar flash of light and shriek of a bell, leaving zagreus cursing quietly.

These are the leaders of the two hundred Angels and of all the others with them. And they took wives for themselves and everyone chose for himself one each.        Once   an   angel   named   Zaqiel,   later   known   as   a   Great   Duke   of   Hell   named   Eligos,   was   among   those   who   did   not   abide   by   what   was   expected   of   his   kind.   As   an   angel,   he   was   settled   as   a   Dominion,   and   was   given   beautiful   form,   and   a   scepter   that   had   an   orb   of   divine   light   which   could   be   used   as   a   spear,   should   he   battle.   He   never   understood   why   they   were   to   learn   war   if   Eden   was   peaceful   and   so   was   heaven,   but   God’s   will   was   sovereign,   and   they   did   as   they   must.   He   finally   understood   why   when   Lucifer’s   words   were   made   known   to   them   all,   and   made   sense.

      He   didn’t   immediately   sided   with   Lucifer,   however   the   Fallen   One’s   words   stuck   with   him   and   he   was   left   to   wonder   why   humans   had   such   liberties   and   so   many   ways   to   find   happiness,   while   they   had   but   one:  Serving   God.  Such  thought   was   reprehensible.   After   some   time   to   his   own   thoughts,   Zaqiel   began   to   side   with   those   whom   were   enamored   by   human   women,   and   he   had   no   problem   in   siding   with   Semyaza   when   he   proposed   that   they   left   heaven   to   live   with   the   women   they   coveted.   

      Zaqiel   was   followed   by   ten   other   angels,   over   whom   he   would   have   command,   and   when   they   settled   among   men,   he   eventually   fell   in   love   for   a   woman   named   Tauthe   with   whom   the   angel   had   four   children,   all   of   them   Nephilim.   When   among   humanity   they   taught   them   sorcery,   blacksmithery,   chemistry,   astronomy   and   war.   He,   and   all   the   others,   later   lost   them   all,   wives   and   children   and   apprentices,   to   the   flood,   which   only   increased   their   bitterness   towards   God.

      War   happened   shortly   after,   and   once   again   he   couldn’t   help   but   to   be   confused   as   to   when   God   had   foreseen   it,   if   that   was   why   they   were   trained   for   war,   was   this   all   a   game?   A   humiliation   to   prove   even   trained   they   were   still   inferior   and   therefore   should   obey?   God   only   grew   less   and   less   beloved   in   his   heart.  During   this   battle,   Hariel   was   the   one   whom   the   one   now   named   as   Eligos   fought   against,   however   there   was   interference   in   their   battle   by   the   hand   of   Zadkiel,   who   was   called   an   angel   of   freedom,   benevolence   and   mercy,   and   who,   to   Eligos’   surprise,   viciously   attacked   his   wings   to   the   point   of   rendering   them   nearly   useless.   Despite   his   wounds   and   the   struggle   to   stand   his   ground   after   such   heavy   injuries,   he   fought   until   incapacitated   by   a   deep   cut   caused   by   Hariel   on   his   face,   which   resulted   in   the   scar   he   still   have   across   his   face.   This   battle   owned   him   acknowledgement   among   the   fallen   as   a   knight,   but   it   also   ruined   his   wings   beyond   healing.

      Eligos   was   cast   aside,   along   with   the   others   who   sided   with   Lucifer   and   lost   this   battle,   which   left   him   quite   frustrated   at   the   lack   of   fairness   in   such   act,   from   the   one   who   should   be   all   love   and   mercy   and   warmth.

      Once   the   souls   of   those   deemed   wicked   by   heaven,   many   whom   they   had   knew   during   their   time   among   men,   needed   a   place   to   be   sent   to,   God   marked   them   to   go   to   Hell,   and   the   realm   was   formed   in   the   figurative   bowels   of   the   earth,   a   dimension   of   it’s   own.   

       In   this   punitive   realm,   Eligos   was   placed   as   commander   to   what   in   time   would   grow   to   be   60   legions   of   demons,   and   given   a   gift   by   Beelzebub,   a   demonic   winged   horse   reanimated   from   one   of   the   deceased   ones   in   the   former   Garden   of   Eden,   something   to   hold   some   replacement   for   his   now   rotting   wings.  His   horse   is   known   as   the   steed   of   Abigor,   named   after   one   of   his   other   aliases.

      His   divine,   perfect   beauty   faded   within   time,   skin   now   sickly   white,   like   his   hair,   the   only   resemblance   of   his   former   glory   being   his   golden   eyes.   His   formerly   divine   scepter   now   turned   into   a   spear,   the   light   that   once   adorned   it   fading   into   a   sharp   blade.   Eligos    now    holds    command   over   270.000   demons   divided   in   60   hellish   legions,   and   rule   a   household   of    368   other   beings,   which   is   composed   by   his   consorts  (which   are   mostly   formed   by   sorceresses,   witches,   sirens,   nymphs,   other   demons,   and   minor   deities   of   both   sexes.)   and   their   spawn.

Ma and Pa James's Second Biggest Fan (we plough a lonely furrow) continues to find Ma Jess's appeal mystifying, since everything about her is negative:

1. Signing up for Team Rocket suggests someone of a morally dubious character to start with, but the truth lies in the clothing, and she's in black!

It's code for her personality:

Pure, beautiful, innocent, sweet-natured, not really bad, dealt a severe hand in life but a fighter.

• Cassidy wears black:

EVIL!!! EVIL, EVIL, EEEEEEVUL!!! FOUL SIRENIC TEMPTRESS!!! EVIL HEARTLESS BITCH STEALING JAMES'S NEVER-BEFORE-SEEN WEEPINBELL!!!

Speaking of which:

2. She was Madame Boss's best agent.

You don't get there being kind.

To reach that standing requires hundreds of successful heists, and we aren't talking nicking gold bars. It's living things.

How many Pokémon do you imagine she stole with merciless efficiency?

How many children did she set upon, pinching every animal they had?

How many innocent lives did she ruin by depriving kids of the pets they loved, never to see them again, eaten away with the not-knowing and the false hope?

The glory of her reign ran on the fuel of blood and tears.

What fate do you envision awaited those Pokémon? It's not exchanging one master for another, it's entering slavery.

Jessie and James aren't the epitome of Team Rocket. They are minnows on the outskirts, despised and mocked by most of their fellow members. The actual group isn't particularly famous for prioritizing Pokémon welfare.

The preferable outcome is being handed out to agents to help catch other victims. Otherwise it's transformation into a war machine, forced to fight on and on to the point of exhaustion and death, no doubt tortured and tested on to boot.

What happens if they don't come up to scratch or are pushed for years until too aged and broken to be of any use? Are Team Rocket ready to pension them off to animal sanctuary?

As if. It's euthanasia or on to the streets to waste away, if not fed to the strongest first.

Ma Jess knew this and worse occurred thanks to her, yet paid it no mind, and felt not a single twinge of guilt in that time of service, then met her end trying to draw another Pokémon into imprisonment.

Some might say it was a case of what goes around, comes around. As her behaviour led to God knows how many Pokémon dying alone, leaving their loved ones to wonder and grieve, so in turn did she die alone in the snow, and Jessie had to carry on without her.

I'm not against Ma Jess, I neither feel like or dislike, but I don't understand how so many fans can happily overlook her murky past of inflicting pain, instead elevating her to a semi-divine tragic heroine, yet apparently Ma and Pa's heinous offences of not stealing and treating Pokémon well are beyond forgiveness.

3. It's the Red Ribbon Army! Save yourselves!

Jessie joined Team Rocket to follow in Ma's footsteps. James went with her. Both moved (upwardly in scale, downwardly in morals) from Sunny Town's gang of petty thief kids to a complex Mafia organisation stretching its wriggling tentacles around the world to crush the air from its lungs.

Why? Ma Jess's baleful influence led the two down that path.

Of course Jessie wants to copy Ma, how and where else can she feel close to her?

There's not even a grave to visit!

Rising in the ranks and Giovanni's favour is both to strike it rich and take her place, becoming Ma in essence. That would make her proud, which is all Jessie ever wanted.

What alternative is there? Stay with Chopper and Tyra forever, ekeing an existence pickpocketing and shoplifting, until mortality comes calling sooner than is welcome, or get loaded quickly and retire early?

James theoretically could've gone home at this point, but when it came to which angry redhead he preferred to beat him up, he chose Jessie.

He was henceforth obliged to go whenever she led, even if it meant following the ghost of her mother into the jaws of evil.

They have an excuse, but what was Ma's for getting involved?

However much they boast and revel in their wickedness, the motto proves the couple still believe themselves on a noble quest, despite everything to the contrary, and why?

Jessie isn't about to accept that Ma Jess, whom she's probably idolized as one of few people to love her and a role model of how a woman should be, was nasty or unpleasant. If she was in Team Rocket, it must be good, whatever the outer appearance.

Except Jessie and James are bad at being bad. They are not master criminals. All their plans fail, rendering them poor and starving in consequence. The inner circle of Team Rocket will always be barred to them because they lack the inner darkness it requires.

The joke is they flourish in any other occupation, whether that be Salon Rocquet, reporters, or flogging merchandise and food at the League. If employed elsewhere they'd be better off, but they have to stay because Jessie can't let go, or bear the thought she might be a disappointment to her mother's name. A different career looks unworthy by comparison.

What, so Ma and Pa have got no son because of Ma Jess? They just wanted him to be a gentleman!

If she hadn't set such a terrible example to her daughter she might have an increased quality of life, but then had she done so Ma wouldn't be dead in the first place.

4. Can't pick 'em can she?

What was it that first attracted Ma to Windy Miller? Does she go for the rustic charm, or the promise of a lifetime's supply of bread to feed the abundance of babies planned?

Don't do it, Ma! He's an alky!

Some birds are like that you see. It's the maternal instinct gone haywire. They find a local reprobate and somehow decide he's really a damaged soul crying out for love, the scapegoat of a cruel society.

He's not evil, he's just misunderstood!

This is why you get nutters wanting to marry the Yorkshire Ripper: they put his 'mischief' down to bad women mistreating his gentle heart, but they of course are devoted to his happiness. They can change him.

You don't know him like I do!

In their fantasy, under the influence of a 'proper' woman he'll transform in to a flower-picking hippie, but not too much, they still like him to be dangerously 'manly' (keeps 'em on their toes), then they can feel smugly superior and more truly female than the 'lesser' breed who failed to tame his sexy pashuns.

And if there's one thing Windy has in abundance, it's raw animal magnetism.

Stop it, Ma! You can't help those who don't want helping!

She put up with the boozing, the flour dust and his somewhat limited communication skills, but what really let him down was the company he kept.

Ever after she would insist Pugh, Pugh, Barney McGrew, Cuthbert, Dibble and Grub led him astray. That's firemen for yer.

Cuthbert? That name's died out.

Sure enough, some point after Ma Jess was stuffed up the spout, old Windy legged it back to Camberwick Green, like the rascal he is, and not a sweet penny piece did she receive in maintenance, the bastard.

At least Ma James got pregnant by a man who stood by her.

She wasn't married to Windy Miller!

Oh, you mean they were living over the brush? I see.

It's all in your head!

Do it my way, and we have Pa Jess. Do it yours, and we're back to a cavernous emptiness. Unless you can supply a picture of the 'real' (pffft) Pa Jess, this is the best available.

Anyway, 'Jessie Miller' just sounds right.

Coincidence? I think not.

5. She went to look for Mew dressed like this.

I could forgive it had she gone in her normal uniform, that's just whimsy, but to have made some effort emphasises that it's not enough!

Some part of her understood a mountain might be a bit parky out, but this was deemed sufficient coverage!

What happened?

She bloody died didn't she?!

6. Ma Boss points the way to doom.

Ma Jess was at least loyal to the mistress she served, but it was a wasted dedication. She squandered her life obeying a heartless virago who could cast aside apparently valued staff without a qualm, whatever thanks she owed them.

The millions Ma Jess accumulated for Madame are probably uncountable, yet she was so worthless that, when dispatched to the mountain, on her own, expected to catch a Legendary Pokémon, by herself, which many doubted even existed, and wasn't likely to come quietly, or put up with orders, but then didn't come back, Madame Boss allowed her only child to sink into poverty and the infamous 'care' of the State.

Everyone knows what goes on there. Entering a home has replaced the workhouse as the place of dread.

Jessie might have been killed or attacked and it didn't remotely concern Madame Boss, unwilling to spare a meagre fraction of her massive fortune to give the girl she made an orphan any comfort or security.

What did she matter? Her mother failed. Why reward that?

In her turn, Jessie became just as obsequious to an undeserving master, who went further than his mama and actively tried to murder her, and still she suffers to please him.

Team Rocket devoured her mother, and now it's swallowed her.

Oh, and Madame Boss got her way upon discovering Mew's fossil, so Ma Jess died for nothing.

7. This.

I'm not surprised Mew wouldn't go with Ma. She probably sensed the vivisection awaiting, and didn't give a toss about the avalanche in revenge.

Mew hasn't got where she is today falling for any old shallow promises from a stranger, thank you.

Suppose the mission had worked, with Mew caught and gift wrapped for Madame's delectation: what then?

Perhaps Mew's power, proving so impressive, would've pushed any cloning scheme aside, leaving Mewtwo unborn and Mew as the mightiest weapon. Or in greed Madame Boss demands more, and in arrogance the scientists promise the earth, the seas and the heavens.

Mew I could see subjected to some non-lethal form of dissection, just to understand how she ticked, that is if they could build the cage to hold her.

As they couldn't, and catching Mew was never a possibility, then Ma Jess's sacrificed herself on a fool's errand, which was obviously one from the outset. If Mew was easy to handle she'd have been captured long before now.

Either Ma dies, Mew's safe, but Madame Boss starts the cloning scheme anyway, or Ma's victorious, Mew is a tool of Team Rocket and the scientists have more sample to experiment upon. Mewtwo is still made, alongside short-lived creations and dozens of unseen freakish abominations preceding.

Now Mewtwo isn't what you call at peace with himself, nor has he received a particularly wholesome experience. One could think Ma indirectly caused that. Her branch of the project may have fizzled to cinders but she still played her role.

What would her legacy have been but to help bring forth the being that wiped out mankind? Where's the future for Jessie when there isn't one?

It's not her fault, but she died in the name of cloning a biological disaster, the creation of synthetic life leading to the destruction of it all.

8. Let's have a gander at Ma in the anime:

• Can afford rent.

• Can afford a tray.

• Can afford crockery.

• Can afford condiments to add flavour to food.

• Can't afford any actual food.

Something's wrong there.

I intended to include affording clothes too, but now I'm not so sure.

I never took Ma to be a brown-all-over kind of woman. At least she gave the fancy stuff to Jessie.

For years I've assumed she wore a brightly coloured jacket, but now I suspect it's a red one heavily patched up, because buying a replacement isn't an option.

Really old clothes are being mended with whatever can be salvaged from even more worn-out clobber.

Best agent Madame Boss has and she's practically living in her own filth.

Team Rocket takes care of its own, eh?

Oh no, let's not get a proper job, one that allows me to provide for my daughter and doesn't ask for my life. Let's stay in this one!

9. Look at Jessie's face!

By her own admission, being tricked into eating snow is the best thing that ever happened to her during an 'otherwise wretched childhood', to the extent she doesn't know it was wrong!

I don't hear Ma and Pa doing that. The only ice James got was an ice-cream sandwich.

What kind of infancy did Ma Jess give the girl for her to be nostalgic about almost dying of malnutrition?

If we say that's a foster mother as in the sub, it means Jessie's fondest memory is after Ma died, which is too brutal for me.

Yeah, thank goodness she's snuffed it.

You think Ma might have taught her not to eat snow! She left her so ill-prepared!

Consequently the sub version makes Ma Jess an awful creature, although I don't see why that Jessie would so desire to mimic a mom she apparently doesn't care about.

10. She's not even bloody here!

I have no picture to signify absence, therefore I must show whom she left behind.

Ma Jess is Pokémon's answer to Bobba Fett: background figure, barely involved, no information, dies early, yet became a fan favourite nevertheless.

If nothing really exists, what is there to like? Why are you contented weaving smoke?

When Rocketshippers put forward the manga as proof, the Anti-Ships used to insist that it 'didn't count' for being set in a 'separate universe'.

If that still goes, and only the contents of the anime apply to the anime, well then it's bye-bye to Ma Jess and Madame Boss, because they aren't real either.

I sometimes think that's true. However traumatic, would Jessie not have acknowledged her mother by now otherwise?

We grasp the characters all had two parents in a nebulous fashion, although not being real people means they don't 'technically' need them, but Ma Jess is the only one who vanished to be granted a face. Why is she then ignored?

She's briefly glimpsed in a passing scene of a single episode of the first series and is never seen or referenced again. The sub doesn't even have that. Where was the use in creating her if only to leave that thread of the tale billowing in the breeze?

We may decide her actions affect Jessie's but we're only imprinting assumptions. She might as well have remained unwritten for all that's made of her.

What we can glean doesn't bode well, irrespective of things left unmentioned.

Her one redeeming deed was dying, thus at least she didn't choose to abandon Jessie. We may presume she'd have stayed with her girl given the chance.

By my reckoning that puts her as Fifth-Best Mother Of Pokémon, behind Ma Brock, Ma James, Dame Ketchum and Ma Boss, in that order.

Then they're those who claim she never died, so she just pissed off like everyone else, rendering her devoid of a single positive quality.

This is the woman you sigh and agonise over for decades.

Ma and Pa are right there, man! Show 'em some love!

The Prince family are very much like the Gaunts in once being wealthy pure bloods but are now reduced to a shadow of once they were.

They weren’t as poor as the Gaunts but we’re nothing like the Malfoys or Blacks in terms of wealth.

They clung to pure blood ideals however and can also tie their lineage to Cadmus Peverell.

Before his sons were born, Halwyn was the youngest and last male Prince.

He had two older sisters and Eileen his only first cousin.

He was disowned when he married Odella Gale, since she’s half siren.

He was placed in Slytherin just like all the Prince’s and proud of it.

He had a talent for potions, herbology, and DADA.

He was a very stoic and reserved man who could pick people apart psychologically if he was feeling malicious. He was soft with his family however.

He is eventually murdered by R/Cabal when Melody is 10.

Mother - Odella Aislinn Gale

Odella is half siren with a siren mother.

She was raised by her father on land but her mother would come visit from time to time.

She was placed into Slytherin which is where she met Halwyn.

She was aware of her blood status during the rise of pure blood supremacy and so worked extra hard out of spite.

She ended up as both Prefect and Head Girl of Slytherin.

She was a member of the Frog Choir.

She had a talent for charms, transfiguration, CoMC, and divination.

She was deeply in love with Halwyn and his sudden death hit her hard.

Jacob’s fall from grace and sudden disappearance right only a few months after Halwyn’s death pushed her more into grief.

At first she was paranoid of Melody running away (hence not letting her have a broom) but then swung the opposite, hardly ever home and throwing herself into work.

Melody looking for the vaults angered her further and their relationship hasn’t recovered.

Eldest Brother - William Halwyn Prince

Melody’s eldest brother who is 11 years older than her.

He can give Snape a run for his money as a cranky, sarcastic, jerk.

He is a loner who on the whole doesn’t like people.

Thanks to being part siren he’s ridiculously attractive and draws people to him despite his prickly personality.

He does have a soft spot for his family and would protect them, even he is mean about it.

The only person he actively likes is his best friend/boyfriend, Faran, a Ravenclaw werewolf.

He has a talent for DADA and potions and makes his boyfriend’s wolfsbane potion.

He becomes a curse breaker for Gringotts along with his boyfriend.

Second Brother - Jacob Corentin Prince

He’s 6 years older than Melody and 5 younger than William.

He’s more hotheaded than William and Melody but he’s good at hiding it.

Only originally looked for the vaults for fun but then got sucked into the more serious side once R got involved.

Once Duncan dies he becomes obsessed with breaking the curse to give meaning to what they did.

Once his dad was murdered he felt it was his fault and left to protect his family and get revenge.

He and William fought a lot growing up but he’s protective of Melody.

Has the attitude that only he’s allowed to tease her.

He didn’t get along with Snape because he reminded him too much of his brother William.

His best subjects were flying, DADA, and transfiguration.

Grandfather - Corentin Cian Gale

Odella’s father and his home is where the family lives.

He’s one of the top experts in Merfolk studies and a renowned magizoologist.

He helped Newt Scamander’s section on water based magical creatures and is longtime friends with him.

He’s also good friends with Professor Kettleburn.

He was sorted into Ravenclaw in his youth.

He’s a very patient and caring man.

Due to his work he has to be away from home a lot but makes an effort to come home to Melody during summer when he can.

He writes to her often when she’s at Hogwarts, trying to compensate for Melody’s sense of abandonment.

His best subjects were CoMC, herbology, and charms.

Grandmother - Kairi

She’s a cold water siren whose colony lives between Iceland and the Faroe Islands.

She could only spend 7 years on land with Corentin before having to return to the sea.

The last 3 she was able to spend with Odella.

She’s much older than even Corentin since sirens age slowly and has children from previous matings.

So Odella has a few full siren half siblings.

Kairi visits her grandchildren during the summer sometimes and taught all of them how to hunt underwater.

She still very much loves Corentin even if she can’t be with him anymore.

Second Cousin - Severus Tobias Snape

Melody and Snape are aware of their relation to each other.

He’s technically welcome to their family but obviously he keeps his distance.

Because of this Melody and her brothers knew not to reveal their blood ties since Snape clearly doesn’t want it to be known.

Because of some of the similarities Snape holds with her father who had just died, she subconsciously latched on to him when they first met.

Snape is aware of this but is mercifully against mocking her for it.

He does get frustrated that none of his prickly barbs bother her.

Most of his animosity comes from not liking Jacob but some of it is from the fact that their backgrounds are similar (disowned parents) but her family clearly loves her, even with its problems.

Despite his acidic nature to her at times, he doesn’t actually want anything bad to happen to her.

Plus she does make the Slytherin house look really good and is the reason they win the House Cup every year.

She almost always keep it long except during her 5th year where she cut it short as a way to cope with the trauma of watching Rakepick torture a random man.

She only needs sea or lake water to wash her hair and keep it healthy.

A deep sea foam color in most cases.

When she’s pissed off it changes to almost a cold flat sea foam color and her pupils constrict to pins.

Hogwarts Information.

Worst Class(es) : She’s too much of a perfectionist to not do well but she does have least favorites.

History of Magic; Professor Binns has made it so boring for her that it makes it hard to pay attention.

Flying; ironic being that her animagus is a bird but she prefers using her own body as opposed to a broom.

DADA; she associates it with the death of her father since he worked in the hex removal department of the Ministry.

Best Class(es) :

Potions; she loves potions and has a natural talent for it. It also reminds her of her father.

Herbology; like potions it reminds her of her father and he taught her a lot in their family greenhouse before his death.

Charms; she really likes Professor Flitwick’s teaching method and has a natural talent for it.

CoMC; She’s good with creatures thanks to her grandfather and takes care of water based creatures back home during the summer since her home is a reserve.

Least Favorite Teacher(s) :

Professor Binns; he bores her to death and took the fun out of learning for her.

Professor Rakepick; her instinct always put her on edge around the woman and she never truly trusted her.

Professor Snape; again, she subconsciously relates him to her father plus she just really loves potions.

Professor Flitwick; she loves his class and since she’s both a tutor and on the Frog Choir spends a lot of time with him. Plus she relates to him in that they’re both not fully human.

She’s not all that interested in Quidditch if she were perfectly honest but Jacob was a huge a fan.

If she had to be a Quidditch player, she’d most likely be a seeker due to her strong hunting instinct.

Her home is on the coast of Ireland and the area is a water creature reserve to protect wounded, sick, or endangered creatures.

There’s a female sea serpent that lives on it that she and her grandfather takes care of.

They also have 6 murtlaps and Melody is so used to taking care of them at a young age, that at Hogwarts she dives for the food for the ones under Kettleburn’s care.

Professor Kettleburn has known her since she was born thanks to his friendship with her grandfather.

Due to her siren heritage, she and her brothers and mother don’t use flirting or seduction if they actually are infatuated and instead will just come out and say it and are very blunt.

They only use seduction if they want something (like food).

Melody feels cold to the touch but her inner temperature is higher than a human’s, allowing her to remain in cold or freezing waters.

Melody, her brothers, and her mother are all exceptionally beautiful but don’t draw people in like part Veelas do, however once they’re in water they become almost supernaturally alluring and their voices become naturally seductive.

They can choose to hypnotize people with their song if they wish but it’s basically a death sentence for the affected person since they’ll become so obsessed they either drown themselves or try and kill the one who sang to them.

There is technically a cure and a way to become immune to siren songs but only the sirens know it.

Love potions don’t affect her and her brothers and mother the same way it does full humans. It basically makes them really drunk and frisky.

She witnessed her father die in front of her since he was poisoned so she can see thestrals.

She’s a Pisces, Jacob is a Cancer, and William is a Scorpio.

She really hates Rita Skeeter and Emily Tyler.

She has a huge crush on Talbott.

She was a hatstall between Slytherin and Ravenclaw but now if she wore the hat again, it would say Slytherin without a doubt.
