The tank was the only home they’d ever known. Though they were young when they’d been taken from the ocean, it had always been cruel to them. The tank, on the other hand, was made with them in mind. It was comfortably large and filled with things like plants and hides for enrichment.
They loved seeing their caretaker, even if he never had much time to spare. He moved briskly whenever he walked by, never even offering a slight glance towards them. Eye contact was a rarity. They didn’t know why he scowled whenever he was forced to face them. His disgust, whenever he tossed the long-dead fish into the tank, made their guts twist with guilt. They’d done something wrong, they were sure of it, but they didn’t know what it could've possibly been.
Maybe something was wrong with them. The water made it difficult to hear anything from the other side of the tank, but they knew one word he used frequently. “Beast”. That’s what he called them. It hurt more knowing he’d handled other people like them before. Sometimes, he’d even smile at someone. They’d never seen the same person twice after someone was wheeled away in a cooler. There was no need to take any of them out of their tanks after all. They found it strange how they'd never seen any of the other enclosures, but it was the only place they could be. They were sure of that fact.
Besides their caretaker, there was another human that came around every once and a while. She had bright eyes and a playful smile constantly fixed on her face. Her fascination with them was a stark contrast to her caretaker’s aversion. The woman would always come and tap on the glass and grin when they came up. With her hands, she’d make little motions and signals. It took them a while to pick up on the language, but with a bit of time, it became easier to hold a conversation. They’d managed to learn her name. Mel. They were called Marley by her, but they’d never heard their caretaker use that name for them. Or any name, for that matter.
Once, they’d asked why their guardian looked at them the way he did. They noticed the way Mel bit her lip before she responded. “He’s like that to everyone. Don’t take it personally, okay? He likes you plenty.”, she signed. Then, they asked about why he never seemed upset with the others. Her expression shifted into one of horror, then deep discomfort. All she said was that she needed to leave, and then she did. They heard yelling a bit later, but they weren’t able to discern why.
They had a feeling that whatever it was, it was their fault.
i know it’s a bit short but take what u can get from me and nibble on it because for all you know it could be months till ur next little meal /j

A siren who has managed to gain human legs. Siren slips into the music business. Instant success. Gains a whole ton of adoring fans.
Maybe Siren is a whumper who likes to toy with some of their new fans. There's always an unlimited amount of fans willing to do anything for them, why not take one of them home? Whumper has to eat after all.
And even if Whumpee escapes no one would believe them that Siren is bad or tried to hurt and kill them. Siren's so great! How could someone so popular be bad?
Siren turning into a Whumperee. Surely a supernatural hunter is going to pick up on the signs of this person being a siren pretty quick. Hunter should probably take care of this Siren problem before it gets more out of hand than it already has.
Might want to hurry with getting rid of Siren. We wouldn't want the general public getting withdrawals from being exposed to Siren's song for too long.

Whump Ideas: Merfolk/Siren + Pollution/Etc
Idk why but I’m sucker for this category of environmental whump. It’s just extra frustrating about it for the characters, and is realistic to how disgustingly polluted our real environment is.  Also adds a bit of spice to any narratives, heeding the warning of environment destruction.
Merfolk/Siren
Getting entangled in fishing line/net
Choking on dirty water
Digesting something they shouldn’t
Getting sick over time by living in poor quality water
Overheating from a rise in temperatures
Blinded by an oil spill
Beached from shallower waters
Snagged/cut by trash
Starving after they’re food sources died out, or sick from eating poor quality food
Fishing hook
Hurt by sunken military equipment
Trapped underwater in a manmade tight space (sunken ship, cargo, etc)
Hurt by hunters
Shot at/by a harpoon
Tormented by a human (this one comes with a whumper)
Caught by a boat
Injured by aquatic vehicles

Voltober No. 6 - Death Death Devil Devil Evil Evil Songs
Prompt: Siren
I haven't done any mer-writing but this might have changed that. I hope I can take this one further this month!
Yada-ya I didn't proofread, enjoy. Continuation of prompt no. 5 - Shipwrecked, ft. Jason.
Big drowning warning, as a heads up.
CW: drowning, lost at sea, blood, non-human whump, non-human whumper, siren mind control
Jason kicked his way south where land had been spotted earlier. He knew it was likely hopeless. The swells towered over him and the pull made it impossible to determine if he had made any progress.
This wasn’t his first ship wreck. He stripped off his pants before they could pull him down. A tiny pull from the waterskin rinsed the salt out of his mouth.
He swam in silence, ragged breathing as he heaved himself through the waves. Anxiety spiked as his legs started to burn.
There was no chance to think about how his body was going to find rest on the seafloor. Jason’s focus centered on pulling air in through his nose and keeping himself pointed in the right direction.
A surge crashed into him sideways, blinding his eyes and sending him spluttering.
Something brushed against his leg.
In a violent scramble, Jason grabbed around inside the oilskin for his knife, terror fumbling his hands. He whipped his head around, scanning the water. It was too hard to spot anything. His heart pounded in his ears.
Above it all, he heard something. Initially, a single note, held for so long he thought it must be coming from his mind. The notes progressed and Jason found all thought washed from his mind by the purest melody.
Exhausted muscles slacked as his body floated, eyes growing wide as the most beautiful creature he had ever seen rose up from the sea in front of him.
Blue skin pulled tight and sleek, blending perfectly into the water around them. Bottomless black eyes peered back at him. And she sang.
Jason let go of the floating debris. He had to go to her. The oilskin slipped into the sea. Her eyes flicked to his knife and he dropped it in surprise. What did he need a knife for? Foolish boy, he was obviously safe. He was ignorant of the salt drying out his mouth as he grinned broadly, paddling towards her.
He was exhausted but nothing hurt. It was impossible to tell if he was floating or drowning as tread water in front of her.
Her teeth were razor sharp and rowed. A second, transparent eyelid blinked across her gorgeous eyes. She was the most beautiful creature he had ever seen. The edges of her singing mouth turned up in a smile and Jason glowed with warmth and joy as she reached a clawed hand towards his face.
She drew a finger tip across his cheek, splitting the skin. Stinging salt mixed with hot blood and his heart sang with joy as she swam close enough to kiss his skin. Red smeared her mouth as she pulled back with a wide enough grin to match his.
The singing stopped and his heart beat in his ears for several moments, clear mind gazing obsessively at the beautiful being. The beat faded with a flash of pain from his cheeks and his lung screamed for air. Draining paralyzing terror dawned the bare moment his brain registered the predator inches from his face.
She struck. Taloned hands grabbed ungently for his hair and pulled him underneath the waves. Air bubbles broke out in front of his face as he thrashed and scrambled to find purchase against his attacker. Fingers slipped off seal sleek skin and his weakened state was no match for the hunter pulling him further and further down.
The water grew cold. His eyes burned. The light darkened and his head pounded under the increasing pressure. His throat screamed and his lungs spasmed, begging him to draw breath. His body twitched beyond control and his mouth surrendered, gasping open only to led the sea flood inside. Freezing water in his lungs triggered a desperate attempt to expel it, only forcing more water inside. The salt turned his blood to cold acid.
Jason struggled pointless, unaware of even the direction of the surface. Darkness crept in on the sides of his vision and he prayed for it to end.
The siren slipped into his vision, hand pulling his chin up to her face. Intelligent eyes stared into his, watching the light slip out from behind them.

Whump prompt no. 2
A siren whumpee having a lovely voice. Something that sounds like heaven on earth to humans. As well as sounding lovely, it also has some… other effects.
A siren’s singing has a similar effect on the brain to that of an addictive drug. It makes the listener crave to hear it, and withdrawal symptoms can occur if that person doesn’t hear it for a while. Naturally, pirates everywhere take that opportunity to exploit and leech money off these ‘siren song addicts’.
Whumpee is a siren who never thought they would have contact with humans. But some hunters found them, catching them with ease despite their struggles.
From there, the group of whumpers charge money for siren song addicts to come and listen to whumpee sing, the time depending on how much was paid. Often times whumpee is forced to sing in the background while the whumpers and addict share drinks and a meal.
Caretaker is someone who accidentally heard a siren singing when they were younger and had always struggled with the addiction, and hated the fact that they’d resorted to paying someone to hear it. But as soon as they see whumpee, alone and terrified, they know they have to do something.
Can caretaker save whumpee and let go of their own addiction? Or will it get the best of them and will they become only yet another whumper?
—————
I’ll probably use this one myself for a fanfic or something, but feel free to use it (with credit of course :) )
