Singers/Vocalists: I am super excited to share this incredible tool that I just started using for my warm ups before gigs and daily vocal routines: The Singing Straw (@singingstraw)! These straws are specifically designed to help vocalists sing (or warm up) in a healthy and efficient manner, using Straw Phonation. In short: by singing warm ups through the straw, the back pressure helps the vocal folds close properly and not work as hard when singing. This helps reduce tension in your vocal tract, which promotes healthy singing. Reposted from @vocalroots (@get_regrann) - For all of the incredible educators out there, thank YOU for all that you do! This post is dedicated to you. Educators are one (amazing) group of occupational voice users where the vocal demands are incredibly high. This group may be at a “higher risk” for developing a voice disorder compared to other professions. According to Cantor Cutiva et al. (2013) and Martins et al. (2015), the lifetime prevalence of developing a voice disorder among teachers was reported to be between 50% and 80%. (This is the percentage of teachers who experienced a voice disorder at some point during their entire career). We need our teachers to keep on doing what they do best, educating the future! This poster (tailored a bit for instagram) highlights some go-to vocal tips for the hard-working educators out there! 💫Water: Aim to drink to keep your voice hydrated all day long. Sip 1/2 of your body weight in ounces daily. (Drink more if you consume caffeinated beverages). 💫Vocal Rest: Schedule vocal naps during breaks within your schedule. Even if it's 10 minutes at a time, your voice deserves the quiet. Perhaps there are quieter alternatives to speaking that can be incorporated into your lesson plans. (Group work, peer-to-peer sharing, or educational videos may be activities to mix it up). 💫Non-verbal cues: Use alternative ways to grab the attention of your students. (Raising a hand, clapping, or ringing a bell). 💫Warm It Up & Cool It Down: Perform warm-up and cool down vocal exercises before and after your work day. You wouldn't run a marathon without warming up or stretching after, would you? Check out straw phonation exercises to help ease vocal tension! (@oovostraw, @singingstraw, @strawsforvoice are all amazing resources for reusable straws). 💫Amplify & Soundproof: Use a personal microphone and speaker. If your classroom is echoic, add carpets or acoustic wall paneling to dampen the excess noise. ‼️Know When To See A Doctor: If you're in pain or sound hoarse for more than 2 weeks, it's time to visit your local otolaryngologist (ENT). - #regrann https://www.instagram.com/p/B3NDYwthns9/?igshid=n2etlxq4i6fr
