harsh afternoon sunlight slants through the newly parted hotel window curtains, and kerry flinches and covers his face with his hand to guard against the bright assault. every sound seems like a jackhammer to his skull, his mouth an arid and cottony desert.

azriel's just done what was asked of him, but kerry's coasting on a come-down. the fresh torture of wakefulness veers him towards a craggy irritation.

that the time of his flight could be changed doesn't matter. seems secondary, behind the want for a few more moments of dark quiet in the downy embrace of a comforter large enough to envelop him twice over.

it's secondary even to the brief urge to grab the nearest pillow and throw it at azriel. knowing it'd be thrown back twice as hard and with better aim is the only thing that stills his hand.

"m'up, m'up, just... put the fuckin' fingers away. gimme a second," he mumbles, but it almost sounds like a plea. or an appeal to azriel's sympathy.

he stirs. it isn't without reluctance. "you're a heartless bastard for openin' the curtains."

seren’s memory, once lost to her now rediscovered, dwells within her mind like an excavated tomb. untouched and suspended within her psyche like the precious relics of kings and queens of old, just as precious, if not more so, to her now that she can recall them. and it is with her newly regained recollections that seren knows the weight that lays across her love’s shoulders like a sodden shroud is not one that had always fell quite so heavy.

sitting beside him, legs tucked beneath her skirts and hands resting neatly atop her lap, she watches him carefully. melancholy is not something she could confess to be wholly absent from his past self—certain experiences by nature are granted to cause more than an acute kind of pain, as well as he may hide or deflect. but now, with centuries passed like the rise and set of the distant sun, with losses and pains that seren cannot begin to fathom, it is clear to her that weariness has become an even closer companion to him. it makes her chest ache in a way that she cannot distinguish between her own or the bond that she has lived so long without. yet one thing she knows to be true, after all these many long years, is that they did not hide from each other. ( do not hide, azriel. not from me. never from me. the past echos in her mind and she wonders if he can hear it too. )

she does not attempt to soften the pinch she can feel between her brows as she reaches to take his hand. her own lightly calloused fingertips pass over the backs of fingerless gloves before lightly brushing the ridges and valleys of his own digits and entwining her hand in his. “ @singerblade . where do you hide your sadness ? ”

THE NIGHT'S GETTING TOO LATE AND THE CIGARETTE IN HER HAND FEELS COLD. still, she holds onto it like it'll escape, lips tight against the filter as her fingers struggle with the lighter she carries. the balcony's a good place for solace when the party indoors has become too loud ( THE BUNGALOW WAS STUFFED WITH BODIES, SARDINES IN A CAN. ) and sweaty, the conversations turning stale the more words were produced. behind the french doors, the chaos inside is a pleasant muffle, and the detective begins to pretend the whistling wind is her counterpart. the party's too full of unfamiliar faces, too dense in who pretends to recognize the person across from them. she has no time for that.

FINALLY, SHE GIVES UP WITH THE LIGHTER, a final clicking ringing the air and punctuating the swift opening and closing of the balcony doors. the party muffles again. she lets a breath through her nose and removes the cigarette from her mouth, leans against the railing. from behind her, her visitor [ @singerblade ] speaks: ❝ is there room on that balcony for two ?  ❞

there's a second of pause. her throat clears, a glance thrown backwards as if she were casting it away. ❝ yeah. i mean, it depends on if you've got a working light or not. mine's out, i'm afraid.  ❞ the woman shuffles against the railing, pretends to make room for him. his footsteps confirm his movement, and she still keeps her gaze away from theirs.

a beat. another drawn breath,

❝ SO: ARE YOU FRIENDS WITH THE HOSTS ? ah, hell -- Miriam, and her wife ( ... ) Candice. sweet couple, don't you think ?  ❞

is it reproach that coats her voice? Is she trying to say he should have known better than to force her into the confinement of the library, so - called for her own safety? So she can heal and hide forever? Perhaps, despite the blind adoration she feels for lord azriel ( he and he only, little loyalty she has for the night court because old habits die hard ), she resents his decision. Or lord rhysand’s – he seems to decide it all around. Just like every high lord does.

“ i want … i want to go home, lord azriel, ” perhaps she begs now, perhaps she would sink to her knees and pray to him if she thought it’d help. His eyes are dark, yet kind – she would follow him to the ends of the world and back already; but if he helped her return to sangravah … “ you have been kind. you and all your people – but this is not a home for me. there are no auburn skies here. the lords will not allow me to rebuild the temple – then so be it. but at the very least allow me the grace to return to sangravah, ” a sudden realization hits her, chilly and horrifying, yet probable. voice grows cold yet feral, alike to that of her friend nesta, “ unless lord beron vanserra thinks me unworthy of returning? @singerblade: what are you working on ? / morbid curiosity.

sitting in the warm light of another boutique hotel's balcony, kerry looks up at azriel as he brushes his hand across the graphite-smudged page of a worn sketchbook. the detritus of an hour or a few mired in attempts at creativity dot the tabletop - a half-finished cocktail with another empty glass beside it, a tablet propped in its case with a dark screen, scrap paper covered in scribbles. a guitar is carefully propped against the empty chair to his left.

it's messy, in a controlled way. these impromptu sessions usually are.

"just doodling, seein' if it stirs up anything. have a couple ideas that are comin' to me visually but getting fuck all otherwise," he says. he twirls a mechanical pencil, sighs, and then scratches out an arc of cross-hatch shading.

he's trying to be slow and steady with this, let it come as it wants. it's driving him up a wall. it takes more effort than he wants to think of.

"but... ah, shit, i don't think i'm going to get anythin' else out of this today." he closes the sketchbook and tablet, piles them together, and pushes them aside with the pencil. his cocktail calls to him more.

as kerry slips into the backseat and tugs the door closed behind him, he meets azriel's eyes in the rearview mirror and grins mischievously, unabashed. on request, azriel had been waiting for him. four slow hours had since passed.

he'd been dropped off in a japantown alley, and picked up at the same one, theatrically secretive about it all. maybe kerry should have given him a timeframe and left him with something more concrete besides i'll text you i'm okay every hour. which, really, is the least he could've done.

still, he'd texted. four, one for each hour. it's all azriel got out of him. there could have been more. there could have been less, too.

azriel sounds both bored and curious. left with four hours on his hands and nothing to do but wait, kerry would be too. often he doles out some version of an answer to satisfy that curiosity, either tailored minorly or not at all. sometimes he doesn't. this time, it's the latter.

"eh, around," he answers unhelpfully. "i wasn't rollin' around in the gutter somewhere if that's what you're wondering." then, slightly apologetic, he tacks on, "didn't mean to take so long though. time flies, or whatever the fuck."

✴ nesta is a survivor of physical, emotional, and psychological abuse, as well as SA. though i will never write about this, it may come up in headcanon posts or be referenced in threads if relevant. it's really important to me, as a survivor myself, that this piece of her history is treated with compassion and delicacy. all posts will of course be tagged appropriately.

✴ i write a lot of other a.cotar characters on my multi and sometimes i bring them in as NPCs in threads here, particularly nesta's friend gwyn. i don't like sjm nor do i care for her plots, writing, or inconsistent character development, but i care a lot about the bare bones of these characters so i stole them and i'm rewriting shit. i talk about it a lot and i worship the ground nesta walks on. hope you're prepared for that!
