#since I have over a hundred F/Os and listing them all

Hi Aki! I have question from the Self shipping alphabet! What do you and your F/Os do for K, I, and X?
Self Shipping Alphabet
K - Kissing what is it like kissing them?
I have a TON of F/Os, but... I’ll pick some out for these! (A balance between many, but not too many, lol.)
Kisses with Tom are pretty gentle, only rising in heat if he’s frustrated in some way. They often taste of some kind of sweetness- a soda or syrup- and a liquor he’s indulged himself in. (He doesn’t actively drink to get drunk anymore, but he still has a cup or two.) Kisses always feel like lazy comfort with him, especially if it’s a quiet day and he plays Susan (his bass guitar) a bit... It’s...so comforting. Homey.
Tord kisses are pretty rough and passionate. If they’re soft, then something is wrong; he’s upset. Scared by something. Needs comfort and kindness mixed with gentle kisses that assure him I’m not going anywhere. Other than those times, he kisses to tease. To lead up to something more. Always tastes faintly of cigars, a hint of liquor, and sometimes bacon (his favorite snack).
Kisses from Billy Lenz depend on his mood. If he’s being good, they’ll be gentle. Maybe a little bite on the bottom lip for more attention, but so, so gentle and sweet. If he’s being a meanie, he’ll get sloppy and rough. Harsh kisses that sometimes result in clacking teeth and slobber. I just have to be patient for the calm, gentle with him and encouraging. His kisses taste like mint- always- and sometimes some other sweet, like chocolate or syrup or some other candy treat he’s gotten ahold of.
I - Imagine what do they imagine their futures together like?
After the adventures of the crew, Tom just wants a laid back life. Do art, play music. Hey, maybe release a single someday? Could be nice. Didn’t think much of marriage before, but...we have agreed marriage isn’t out of the question. Kids are still a question Tom hasn’t decided on yet; I’m cool with them, he’s nervous. It’s something we’ll take our time on.
Tord would be happiest with me as his bride, making us the rulers of the world. Commanders of Red Army. We will be unstoppable, all of our wants and needs met without question... Yes, even if it means Edd getting his cola back. (As I drink cola on occasion as well.) Probably a few kids, too... Rulers eventually need their heirs, no~? I, personally, would like....less world-ruling in my future, but he won me over with the idea of me owning as many cats as I like with plenty of room for them to run and play. A section of staff dedicated to feeding them and helping me care for them... Ah. Sometimes, he knows me too well.
Billy is simply happy with things as they are. This cozy little space that I fix up and adjust (to his specifications). A home for both of us... It makes him so, so happy!! He can stay in the attic or climb down to cuddle in bed with me...or I go up with him! He hasn’t thought much about kids or rings (like I have before this), but since it feels like things are good this way...then they are! I’m happy long as he’s happy.
X - X-ray how do they help the other if they’re sick or tired?
Tom is all about getting straight to the point. What do I need? What will make me comfortable? Do I need food or drink? What kind of medicine do I need...? He tries to give me space, but also hovers a little in concern, especially the more sick I am. ...Not gonna lie, I’m about the same. Hovering in concern and doing my best to help out. I do better with foods these days and hydration is always important...but getting medicines does worry me, since I’m not sure...what kinds to get..... But it usually works out, thankfully.
The Red Army has a medical wing, so typically Tord sends me down there instead of personally helping out...but only because he knows it will do me better to be treated by people who know what they’re doing. Not their busybody leader, who is most certainly not stressed and anxious about how I’m doing. What would give you that idea? (And even once I’m allowed back bc I’m just recovering, Tord’s still a mess. He’s such a protective worrywart.) Tord does the same thing to me, where he forces himself to work until he can’t, and then I make sure he goes down to the medical wing to be taken care of. I, also, am prone to hovering. Especially since I don’t do much in the Red Army aside from mild paperwork and a few supply checks when the latter is done.
When I get sick... Billy becomes a mess. He’s immediately super worried over how sick I am and frustrated that he can’t just....fix it. Make it go away. Taking medicine is GROSS and he knows it! But he’s also not good at cooking... Getting water he can do, but if I try to make food, then guess what? He’ll throw a fit! It makes it hard to manage, but it’s also understandable. He’s just upset and overprotective. It does help that he helps me walk around the house if I’m feeling lightheaded. Also dusted the attic so I could go up there with him and not be sneezing a lot or have it mess with my throat. On the flip side, Billy hates getting sick. He hates medicine, doesn’t want to drink all water to help his throat, and.... Okay, soup is pretty good. He likes having soup on sick days and in the wintertime! Everything else is BAD and he HATES IT!! Bad stuff! Getting him to take it is a fight in itself, but when all else fails..... Bribe him with kisses and treats.

Lectures - Week 7
Mid Term Exam
Richard went over a couple of the questions from the midterm exam; I wasn’t surprised by the admission that question 10 was impossible. I had that exact same thought regarding how RSA is bust with Merkle puzzles, because breaking one of the puzzles will give you the private key and therefore you break all the puzzles. (free marks!) I still think the answer to number 5 is questionable (lol)... I would argue the case that ‘authentication’ should be accepted as equally valid to ‘type I / type II error tradeoff’. When we refer to ‘authentication’ it is not purely referring to the ability to bruteforce it (you could if you broke into the back panel technically) but also encompasses the idea that the individual entering the code is actually the person intended to possess the code. So in essence, I would say authentication encompasses ‘type I / type II error’ tradeoff, plus a couple of other things. (hence most important)
Diffie-Hellman & Forward Secrecy
I already discussed the ideas behind Diffie-Hellman key exchange here - basically we want two people to agree on a really big prime p and a base b (which is primitive root modulo p). Then each party picks another big number secret which they use to send g^s (mod p) to the other party; because of some cool modulo laws the other party can combine it with their own secret to generate a shared secret. Now the security of this process relies on the fact that the Discrete Log Problem is hard to solve:
So in this case we know g, p and X and we are trying to work back to find s (i.e. either of the parties’ secrets). For small numbers this might not be too bad, but since we have computers we are dealing with numbers hundreds of digits long.
Richard also touched on the idea of ‘Forward Secrecy’ - basically its a method of protecting multiple data-streams being compromised when a server private key is leaked. This means that we generate separate random secret keys for every client using a non-deterministic algorithm (if they get the algorithm we don’t want them being able to repeat things).
Common Vulnerabilities
When we think of C code, I think the most common vulnerabilities relate to some form of memory corruption - namely the buffer overflow attacks we have been talking about for weeks. (I think I’ve explained them like 5 times but basically overflowing a buffer into the stack variables & return address) Another common one was the format string attack - who knows why they thought they needed the “%x” to read items off the stack and “%n” to dump items on the stack. (FOR A PRINTF()) The other obvious one is dumping user inputs as the first argument to printf. I think the common theme to all of these is pretty obvious - assume the user is going to break everything and therefore validate against everything!
Important Assets
Some good tips for ensuring important assets remain up-to-date and relevant include:
Regularly surveying the values of the people involved in what you are protecting
Developing a plan for ascertaining the important components - as humans are often good critics, perhaps a multi-stage review may be appropriate
Periodically revising the current list of assets - organisational values drift and so will the ‘importance’ of each asset
We typically see assets falling under two main categories:
Tangible - physical; usually easy to give a value
Equipment, products, etc
Intangible; usually not valued by physical qualities; hard to assign an appropriate value
Employee morale & security
Customer information
Company secrets
Service availability
It’s important to remember that even though some ‘assets’ of a company may be difficult to value, that doesn’t mean we should completely forget about them!
Web of Trust
One of the biggest issues we have on the internet is answering the question, “how do I know you are who you say you are?” - i.e. authentication. Like how do I know right now that my mindless rambles are actually going to Tumblr and not some other place? Well apart from the fact they’re probably not of high enough value to warrant an attack, we do this through some centralised bodies known as certificate authorities. (more detailed explanation here). The basic idea is a website will register their public key with a certificate authority; they will be given a signature of their key (the websites) with the CA’s private key. When I visit the website they will send me their public key and the signature; since I know the certificate authority, I can verify they approved of this.
The big problem with this is that comes back to the ‘single point of failure’ issue; the matter of the fact is, you only need to compromise one of these bodies and you can bust everyone’s ability to properly authenticate. Also you have to think about the financial incentive behind CAs too - they get money for providing these certificates, so they are probably going to bend the type I / type II error tradeoff more towards letting more people getting certs (rather than stopping bad guys)! The other issue relates to the extended ASCII characters; it’s pretty difficult to spot when a letter like an e is flipped to a é (letter accents) - like if you glanced into your browser and it said www.memés.com, you might not notice you are at the wrong site!
Extended: Bug Bounties
Bounties basically provide a “validity criteria” for finding bugs in software and hardware with a reward (typically monetary) in return. Some services are public such as Bug Crowd and HackerOne, however some like Synack are private. When trying to get the rewards for these bounties it is important to stay in scope, as they often are only giving you permission to test certain regions of a company’s infrastructure. It’s usually a good idea when starting out to look at recently modified assets and publicly disclosed reports; you can work from here. The general process outlined in lectures was as follows:
Find a suitable piece of infrastructure (i.e. from a bounty site)
Review the scope for the bounty
Perform reconnaissance
Hit the target and look for vulnerabilities
Write a report and submit to the company
There are heaps of good resources online to learn the skills required to look for exploits such as one HackerOne. Doing CTFs such as OverTheWire, HackThisSite, etc can also hone your skills for common exploits. However, I still think keeping up-to-date on the latest CVE exploits (and how they work) is useful!
In the lectures, the team went over a strategy called fuzzing; the basic idea is that you repeatedly provide input to each section of a program and monitor for unexpected outputs. You can use software to automatic this process, however you have to know where to look (and inject). Some of the common mutation strategies (when fuzzing) include bit flips, byte flips, arithmetic operations, known integers, dictionaries and mixing the above.
Extended: Penetration Testing
The idea of this testing is good (in theory) in that it forces us to ‘think like an attacker’ and discover vulnerabilities in our systems before another attacker can. They are basically authorised simulated cyberattacks on a computer system to evaluate risks; at the end you should know both strengths and weaknesses. The basic stages of penetration testing are as follows:
Reconnaissance - locate potential vulnerabilities
Planning - think about how to exploit the found vulnerabilities
Exploitation - use appropriate payloads (discovering in planning) to make use the vulnerabilities to compromise the system
Post-exploitation - establish persistence
I think some of the certifications used in pentesting are a bit of a ‘meme’, as well as the tools when they aren’t used as part of a much broader approach. Using tools for recon purposes is fine, but throwing every possible tool at a system just to give a ‘tick of security’ is ridiculous. Some of the tools mentioned:
Metasploit - big database of known vulnerabilities for systems that can be applied
Burp - website scanning
Wireshark - analysis of network traffic (packets, etc)
Kali Linux - linux OS with heaps of exploitation tools
NMap - exploration of open ports on networks (beware of direct printing port lol)
Gobuster - bruteforcing website URLs
Once again, playing around with the tools and knowing the sort of information you can gather with them is definitely useful. Also just having a broader knowledge of the sorts of exploits that exist through research or CTF is good too!

Useful tools for editors: Go Predators edition
It’s been awhile since we’ve visited the Useful Tools for Editors series so in honor of our Nashville Predators making it to the NHL Western Conference Finals here’s a new batch of software, hardware, books, tweets and tips for editors everywhere. Go Preds!
Art of the Cut book
Most people reading this column have probably been following Steve Hullfish’s long running ART OF THE CUT series here on PVC. It is by far the most expansive and in-depth interview series with the biggest names working in editorial in Hollywood today. While Steve’s series has published on PVC for quite some time you may not know that he recently published a printed, paperback version of Art of the Cut:Conversations with Film and TV Editors.
I’m sure the first question asked is: Why would I every buy a dead tree version of this book when I can read them all online for free? For me there is still the pleasure of curling up with a good book and as an editor I learn something every time I read something like Art of the Cut. After a long day of editing I just don’t like to stare at more screens, even a Kindle (though a Kindle isn’t as bad as an iPad.) But the best thing about the book is that the interviews are organized by topic and not just by interview subject. I think this approach takes the linear approach to reading a book out the window as you can browse the table of contents and go to a section that is of interest. Since Steve is an editor first and foremost he does a great job interviewing his subjects and has worked very hard on the curation of hundreds of hours or interviews. Amazon is currently listing the book at $36.26 so click on over and get your own copy.
I really love how the printed version of @stevehullfish ART OF THE CUT book divides the interviews by topic.

Avid App Manager Closer
God bless Avid and their attempts at making Media Composer easier to install and work with but one downside of a modern Avid install is that both the background services and the Avid Application Manager seem to run all the time. While you can just quit the background processes the App Manager continues with a helper process that runs even after quitting (this is on a Mac, I’m unsure how this works on a PC). Yes you can force quit via the Activity Monitor or you can download the AvidAppManagerCloser thingy that will do it for you.
This little Automator script comes courtesy of the must-read Avid related blog 24p. Click on over there, give it a read and download it if you need it.
Editing Folders generator freebie
Many of us know and love and use Post Haste from Digital Rebellion to get us setup with a defined folder structure when we go to work on a new editing job. But editor Adam Schoales wanted to customize things a bit more and he created a Mac Automator workflow called Editing Folders that does just that and is available as a free download. It only asks you to name when you launch it and then creates a series of folders where you specify.
This is a pretty good set of folders to cover many different edit jobs.
If you want to customize the folders you can open the Editing Folders script in Automator and dig into the shell script a little bit and change those folder names and maybe even add a few more. I didn’t do this but since you can see those folder names in the script I’m guessing it should be easy. But since there’s not support with this freebie you’re on your own.
Some free custom folder icons
If you just want some new, free custom folder icons then head over to Sam Woodhall’s blog and download his 2017 Post Production Icons. Pretty simple in concept but there is a lot of different categories in the sets Sam has created. The clean, modern design is just nice to look at as well.
Each of those folders you see on the left all contain subfolders of varying types to future organize your projects. They are some specific folders icons for Final Cut Pro X and Adobe CC apps but there is enough in there that any media professional will be able to find some stuff to use.
Sam also includes some blank folder png files so I suppose you could take those and make some of your own. One could also dig through all the folders and remove what you don’t want and create a template set that could be duplicated for each new project. I guess that’s sort of like the Automator script above only you don’t run an Automator script. Thanks to Sam for putting these together and you can thank Sam as well (or leave him a donation for these things) on his blog.
Timing
As a freelancer I always keep an eye out for time tracking apps because freelancers track a lot of time. And as one who works in multiple NLEs tracking between the different applications and projects can become tedious. This app called Timing was recently brought to my attention and I can’t wait to try it. It looks to have a lot of different analytics to track many aspects of what you’re working on. Timing also says it will track documents so my first test will be to see if it can latch onto an NLE project or Library and actually track it per job and not just per NLE.
Timing has three difference cost tiers ranging from $29 – $79. It looks like the $49 option is the sweet spot with a lot of useful looking options at that price.
FindrCat (Pro)
Intelligent Assistance introduced a new app last last year called FindrCat. It’s an interesting little Final Cut Pro X app with a cool idea that kind of reverses that you might think in that it takes your Keywords applied in FCPX and turns them into Finder tags in the Mac OS Finder. Those keywords then travel with the files as metadata meaning they are searchable outside of FCPX. Philip Hodgetts talks a bit more about FindrCat on his blog post after the software’s introduction.
FindrCat is $20 and available on the Mac App Store.
Rampant Design NLE Templates
We all know Rampant Design as a creator of great special effects and overlays but they’ve gotten into creating templates for both Adobe Premiere Pro CC and Final Cut Pro X. They create After Effects templates as well but I’m always more interested in cool templates that work directly in the NLE (sorry Avid Media Composer but none for you right now). The PPro templates include things like VHS glitch effects, various promo and lower third designs as well as a slideshow. FCPX templates include some of the same but a few less. And the price is right running at around $20.
Some of these types of things are over the top for most jobs but depending on your need templates like these can save a ton of time if you’re in a pinch or a ton of headaches if you’re not a particularity strong motion graphic designer. And since these are project files you can most likely monkey around with them and do a good bit of customization to fit your need.
FX Factory
It’s always worth catching up with that’s new from FX Factory since the last edition of Useful Tools. There’s a few things I wanted to point out:
Yanobox Mosaic
I’m always by what Yanobox is doing. Their Nodes tools just blows my mind and now they’re released Mosaic for FCPX, Motion, Premiere Pro and After Effects. I can’t explain it so here’s YAnobox’s description: “Mosaic lets you create a wide range of effects based on real time pixel texturing and adaptive tiling. Mosaic includes several procedural recipes but the most exciting use comes with the import of your own motifs to create amazing graphic effects.”
Or better yet watch the video:
Kevin P. McAuliffe wrote up a little review here on PVC so check that out as well.
VideoDenoise and Echo & Noise Remover from CrumplePop.
A new entry into the noise removal category is VideoDenoise. This $99 option is optimized for OpenCL and CUDA which is a good thing as denoising is not for the small computer.
On the audio side both EchoRemover and AudioDenoise have added some new hosts including Logic Pro, GarangeBand, Davinci Resolve and Adobe Audition. I expect we’ll see more and more plug-ins supporting Resolve in the future. All of these CrumplePop tools are $99 and part of the FX Factory ecosystem. Update your FX Factory install and you can get a free demo of most all FX Factory tools as well as purchase the ones you need.
Red Giant Universe
Red Giant’s subscription effects service Universe has gotten an update to version 2.1. And with version 2.1 we get six new effects:
AV Club: Mimic the lo-fi, noisy text found on ancient video tapes, old infomercials and local access cable channel shows.
Luster: The 1980s are back! Give video text the retro treatment with Luster by applying a metal sheen to text – includes a refraction-based bevel for a glassy simulated 3D look.
Title Motion: Create text and shapes and then instantly add dynamic animations that bring them on and off screen. Great for titles, lower thirds, callouts and more.
Ecto: Inspired by the timeless film “Ghostbusters” and Netflix cult-hit “Stranger Things,” Ecto allows artists to create haunting, evolving titles with this glowing, fractal-based effect.
Long Shadow: Apply a colored, long shadow to text, logo or shape, for both classic and modern motion design.
Glow Fi II: Give text an ethereal moody look by instantly adding silky smooth, self-animating, fractal-based glow effects to titles. A simple UI make it easy to apply evolving, organic glows.
Universe is also a package that is supporting beyond the usual FCPX/Motion/Premiere Pro/AE as it also supports Magix Vegas Pro, Hitfilm and Davinci Resolve. Universe costs $99 / year or $20 / month.
