With her guests gone and the work crew ensconced downstairs, Gemma retrieved the envelope. She set it down on the coffee table, staring at it. There could be answers in there. Or not. It could be for another Gemma altogether. But she’d never know unless she opened it. With a deep breath, Gemma opened the Express Delivery envelope. Within the mailer was a tattered envelope taped shut. It was lightweight; there was little in there, a photograph and a letter.

Gemma gasped, her eyes filled with tears as she gazed at the photo above the text: Gemma and Daddy. It was him! This was the man in her dream who was giving her ice cream. Overcome, Gemma wept for that tiny girl she’d once been and how her life could have been so different if she’d grown up cared for and loved as he’d told Kelly.

After calming down, and with trembling hands, she opened the letter addressed to Corey’s mother.

Dear Marcia, I’m sending this picture to you for safekeeping. I caught Kelly snooping through my trailer the other day. If she sees this picture, there will be hell to pay. I want to save it for the little lamb. Gemma should know how much her father loves and wants her. I know Kelly has you fooled. You think she’s a kind neighbor looking out for me. But that woman is a Jekyll and Hyde. She could charm the bark off the tree and then set it on fire when it angered her. Gemma’s father didn’t know about her until she was almost three. Then, he came to Strangerville immediately. I helped him confirm paternity and allowed him to spend time with the little lamb. It’s absolutely horrible the things Kelly threatened to drive him away. Breaks my heart. I should have been brave enough to help him stand against her, but she scared me then and still does. Gemma’s father sends me money every month, and I buy Gemma things that Kelly won’t notice. Not that she cares enough to notice much. I’d never see the little lamb again if Kelly knew of this. And then Gemma wouldn’t have anyone looking out for her. Gemma only saw her father a few times. But I think they quickly developed a bond. The day he gave up and left town, she had a fit, shaking, and her eyes rolled back. I think her little heart was broken. When I told Kelly about the fit, she wouldn’t even take her child to the doctor. Save this photo and letter for Gemma. And give it to her when she’s older. Give Corey my love and tell her Grandma will send more cookies soon. All my love, Mommy. P.S. Darling Gemma, your daddy loves and wants you so much. If your mother says otherwise, she’s lying. I will never forgive myself for being a coward. I should have done the right thing and helped him fight for you. Please forgive me.

Gemma went cold inside; she felt numb. Slowly and methodically, she returned the items to her desk. Robotically, she slipped her headphones on and curled up on the couch, staring into space.

Winter 08: Dateless - Pt.2 (13/64)

When we stepped outside after dinner, Alfie spotted the ice skating rink at the square and asked me if I wanted to skate. I like ice skating,  so I agreed.

After a while, Alfie asked me if I wanted to do a spin with him. I felt a bit weird holding his hands, but it was quite fun.

Well, until we fell, haha, but I guess even that was funny.

At that point, I was getting cold, so I told him I should be heading home. He insisted on walking me home, which was nice. We talked some more on the way home. He told me about all his travels as a child with his mum, who writes travel guides. I almost felt a bit jealous, haha.

He hugged me when we said goodbye.

I liked Alfie and we had a good time. I didn't really get that butterfly feeling, but he's nice and I think we could at least be friends. Maybe more? I don't know yet.

Gameplay notes: Alfie rolled the wish to be friends with Rachel instantly. She didn’t, but she kept initiating friendly interactions with him. Spinning together on the ice was Alfie’s autonomous idea. And while I sort of expected shy Rachel to refuse, she didn’t. Upon saying goodbye, they had reached the “friend” stage and the “friendly hug” was accepted by both. Attraction Score: 7.

Meanwhile, across town, Cammie is looking after a Boston terrier called Alfie for the weekend. (You may remember that Cammie works at a vet clinic with Roy's ex-girlfriend, Saoirse) However Alfie is proving to be a bit of a handful!

Cammie: Oh my God, Alfie! That is NOT a dog toy! PUT IT DOWN!! NOW!!!

Gemma: Hey! Have you been home long?

Markus: About an hour.

Gemma: I’m ready for you to start working from home. I miss seeing you.

Markus: (heavy sigh) Establishing your own company is intense. I’m sure things will become more routine shortly.

Gemma: Before the baby arrives, I hope.

Markus grimaced.

Markus: How was therapy?

Gemma: Interesting. I like her and feel comfortable with her techniques. She suggested that I search for Mrs. Potter’s daughter. She might be able to yield some information.

Markus: It wouldn’t hurt. You should hire a private investigator.

Gemma: I plan to.

Gemma: I loved my jewelry class tonight. It feels like a perfect fit for me. The instructor was impressed with my bracelet.

Markus: Mm-hmm.

Gemma: (annoyed) She wasn’t just saying it to sell me more classes or products. The rest of the class thought so, too. It felt like…

Markus: Like?

Gemma: Like I wasn’t learning. It felt like I was remembering.

Markus: (slowly) Okay.

Gemma: I’m going to make a jewelry studio in the basement.

Markus: Gem-ma, you’ve had one class! Why do you think purchasing all the equipment and supplies after one class is a good idea?

Gemma: (snapping) I told you, it doesn’t feel new. It feels like I’m remembering how to do it.

Markus: What does that even mean?

Gemma: It mean that I will set up a jewelry studio in the basement. You’re never home anyway. I need something to occupy my time.

Gemma stalked off in a huff. She knew she shouldn’t feel this angry, and knowing that just made her angrier.

Markus: (muttering) Fuck. I am tired, and I don’t need this shit.
