This is Nicole Morning and this is the blurb Nicole wrote for my book Simple Steps to a Life Less Shitty.
You can get the book here at this site's shop, but before you do that you should buy Nicole's tape of writing, Soft Animal, from Hello America Stereo Cassette and her new book, SELFTITLED, from Trident Press.
Nicole is one of my favorite writers. I don't say that lightly. Her work is important and beautifully rendered.
Make a shopping list.

The Internet is a Good Tool, but it's Probably Making Your Life Harder
1) You can always turn off your phone. Do it. Press that button and hold it down until the screen goes dark. Slap that laptop shut.
2) The “attention economy” is unbecoming of a good, smart, substantial person.
3) What good does checking Twitter every 12 minutes do you? What do you get out of that? It's empty. Your time is precious. Don't waste it with obsessive dead-end busy work, plastic celebrities who wouldn’t give a fuck about you, and doom-scrolling.
4) Think about your biggest hero. Picture them in your head. Would you respect them as much if you saw them hunched over their phone all day like a boring fucking zombie? No, you want them out there in the world doing heroic things, writing that great novel/song/whatever, saving the planet, standing up for the disenfranchised, or whatever else it was that made you love them in the first place. Let's try to be as good as our heroes. Use their example then set your own.
5) A lot of people hang up their real selves like a coat in a closet before they go online. Manufactured internet personalities are not real personalities.
6) Too much useless info is making it harder for all of us to cope with everyday hassles. We're overfull with inconsequential information that does nothing good for us.
7) Remember this: Everyone wants you to put down your phone. The person behind you in line at the post office, the family driving next to you as you swerve into their lane, the guy taking your order at Waffle House, your friends, your family, your parents, your kids. What they all think when they see you staring at your phone is: "Please, please put that away." You can be so much better than this. -Adam Gnade

Here's Dana Margolin of the band Porridge Radio and here's the blurb Dana wrote for my book Simple Steps to a Life Less Shitty.
Porridge Radio's record on Secretly Canadian Every Bad has been a great friend this year. They're one of the best bands on the planet. No exaggeration. Like "will be remembered for a long time" important-good.
Simple Steps is the newly rewritten, overhauled paperback book sequel to my DIY Guide to Fighting the Big Motherfuckin' Sad.
It comes out Friday, August 6th.
You can get preorders at www.adamgnade.com
They're $8 a pop. $4.80 if you're a bookstore, distro, or shop that sells books.

When Dealing with Horrible Assholes Remember the Awful Cycle of Abuse
1) Most bad adults were just good kids who were ruined by the bad adults who raised them.
2) Everyone starts out sweet, kind, and full of love and wonder. No matter how awful bad adults are, that good small thing is still in there somewhere.
3) Bad adults are casualties of war. Act accordingly.
4) You'll meet a lot of bad adults in your life, but don't let them turn you into something you're not.
5) If you can't help them then tell them they need to get help and remove yourself from the situation.
6) If you have kids, teach them to understand truth and fairness.
7) If you have kids, teach them that to be good is to be kind.

Here is Justin Pearson with the hero Captain and here (below) is the blurb he (JP, not Captain) wrote for my book Simple Steps to a Life Less Shitty (as pictured with my pal Bear in photo #2).JP and Captain by Becky DiGiglio. Bear and book by me.
The book comes out Friday. Get yours here.
“If you have taken a yoga class before, the instructor most likely said something like, ‘Let us wish peace upon all living beings’ as they tried to spread a thick layer of positivity that, well … not all of us relate to in any way, shape, or form. Upon reading Simple Steps to a Life Less Shitty, you quickly realize it’s kinda like going to yoga—retaining that element of inner-peace, and at the same time being completely aware that the human species is a total-butthole-motherfucking-jerk, and that some of us will just have to do a more effective job at navigating through this world.” - Justin Pearson, of The Locust, Dead Cross, and Swing Kids, Three One G, author of From the Graveyard of the Arousal Industry

A Rough Guide to Fighting Fair
1) Figure out how to balance "virtuous" and “sweet” with "not giving a fuck" and you’ll be on the right path.
2) Find the good guys and stick with them while the bad guys continue to take advantage of people, fight over money, and pretend to be your friend.
3) Be honest without exception but never mean under the guise of being honest.
4) Just the same: Be kind, but don't be a pushover.
5) Embrace strength without oppression.
6) Always stick up for those who can't do so themselves. You'll know an unfair fight when you see one.
7) Be a better judge of character and see the assholes for who they are. Try not to be naïve, but don't stop trusting. It's a hard balance—a lifelong process.
