because it’s definitely johnny’s idea to even start a campaign—he hasn’t played dnd since he was a teenager, and he thinks it’d be a good way for him and the rest of the guys to unwind between deployments. it’s mentally stimulating enough for ghost, includes sometimes rather gratuitous violence and battle strategy for price, and it allows kyle to expend all his pent up creativity into creating the perfect character.

so you know johnny makes it his mission to help each of the guys with their character sheets (price needs the most help though—because he just doesn’t understand why he can’t be a dragonborn AND an orc). but eventually, all four of them have character sheets filled out rather extensively, with backstories and even little doodles that kyle did himself.

and that’s how johnny finds himself running back to yo. you were his old childhood best friend, after all—who cares if he hasn’t spoken to you in years, right? besides, you were the dm back when you two still lived on the same street as one another, so you at least knew what you were doing.
