I don’t really think PB will touch on this at all but I really hope we see some repercussions for Bran keeping his mating bond with Leah shut for the entirety of their mating.
The mating bond is meant to have an enormous impact on both individuals—especially their emotional wellbeing right? So I feel like there should be some actual negative consequences to it being kept shut for so long?

So... it's about spacebats.
There was a post on twitter. I asked if it was canonically confirmed that Hordak and the clones are really "spacebats", since I've once read a post in which a fan said the showrunners denied it. Look, I'm crazy. Maybe I'm wrong.
Anyways. Me and the account I talked with (if you are here, hi dear💜) agreed that they have too many similarities with bats. So even if it's not confirmed it's canon in my heart.
Spacebats have, according to my answers:
-large hands: bats are in the order of chiroptera (kheiros=hand; pteiros=wing). Plus the claws. I had originally headcanon their hands to be bigger than their feet, but honestely they need a good lever to apply their body weight. Feet are very complicated organs (yes, organs) and they need to satisfy certain physics requests in order to allow erect position. So, claws on both hands and feet. Same size.
-looking at the design of the spacebats (especially Horde Prime) I've noticed some kind of disproportion. They have shorter femur. Or at least, shorter than us. Bats have shorter inferior limbs. We had too longer arms to climb, then they became shorter and shorter. But we never had "hand wings". So that's the only reason I can find for the disproportion to exist in the first place. It's very little after all and sometimes animation inconsistency deletes it too.
-I'm neutral towards the headcanon of them having devil tails (in fanfics). Who cares, I mean you can have more caudal vertebrae and that's okay, even humans have it sometimes. Our bats don't have long tails, but who knows the other bats "in the universe". Etherian bats/Imp's brothers have long tails. About the wings headcanon mmm not so much. They are extra limbs for them. But as I said, same goes with Angella. It's creepy to me, but I know people love the Angel/Devil dichotomy.
-large shoulders and so⤵️
-"fat tiddies": as I said, those may actually be just larger pectoral muscles. You know, to fly you need those. As I said on twitter if I were to imagine a humanoid form evolved from bats I would think about the spacebats.
Now, compared anathomy, biological anologies and homologies apart.
Let's talk about physiology.
Premise: I'm not a vet. I'm not a doctor yet. So, more expert tumblr users, correct me if I say something wrong.
So, as I said. To fly you need big muscles on the thorax, shoulders and chest area. And not any muscles.
You infact need a lot of red muscle, so a lot of mytocondria, so a lot of energy.
As my beloved Barbascura said (an Italian youtuber, he is an organic chemist, I love him) bats...are complicated.
They live a lot considering their stature. Because in general there's this rule *the smaller you are the shorter you live* in biology. They are a very valid exception to this rule. So are we, but we worked on it a lot. Healtier life style. Hygene. More food. Science. Medicine. You know.
Now, the longer you live the higher chances to develope cancer you get. The more your cells (and so mytocondria) work the higher chances to develope cancer you get.
So, why are bats one of the most efficient specie in being able to avoid cancer? Why don't they fall ill that easily? Why a mammal, who techincally has not the physiology to fly, has this ability? They need energy, their bodies are, in theory, super stressed. So why aren't they constantly set on fire? How the heck do they live this much?
So, when a body goes through inflammation it produces ROS (Reactive Oxygen Species). So, radicals. Highly reactive molecules who have the tendency to basically trigger any chemical reaction possible. They can be useful to defeat a pathogen, but only in a very low quantity. If you produce too many ROS you can end up having them attack your proteins, the membrane of your cells, or...even DNA.
Yes. I guess you now understood what I'm going to talk about.
So. Hordak's sickness has been long analyzed by fans. People who know way more than me and are able to write better. So go check on them, not me.
So far, the most recurring ideas have been that he suffers from some kind of auto-immune disease (vitiligo), in a way similar to psoriasis and he has a rare muscular atrophy. I still lack a lot of knowledge and experience in the field (in my country medicine is a 6 years long nightmare, I'm just a second year and we start at best at 19) but the aetiopathogenesis of these condition is pretty much unknown. Best hypothesis: a) auto-immune b) genetic malfunction and/or predisposition c) both. And other hypothesis have been made of course.
So, what has that to do with ROS?
Simple: as I said an extra level of these molecules can even cause damage to DNA, even to the immune system. Am I trying to find out the cause of the unknown and alien disease of a cyborg fictional spacebat? "Adora: no! ...Maybe!"
I'm just giving ideas.
Anyways, we were saying that bats need a lot of energy. Energy=ROS. ROS=problems.
Plot twist: those thingies are filled with ROS. No, they rarely have cancer, they rarely have problems in general. No fever, no flu. Or at least is very rare (vet colluegues I call upon thy).
So? Well, they found out a very complicated reparation self mechanism in bats, way more complicated that the one you can find in ordinary mammals. Basically it's not like their DNA doesn't get damaged; it does but it gets fixed immediately.
This of course in functional individuals, which Hordak sadly is not.
Humanoid bats/spacebats don't fly anymore, but maybe their methabolism didn't change much. Another specie with a great tollerance to ROS is the furless mole, who by the way (again) doesn't develope cancer, lives a loooot given its size, and plus can live without oxigen for hours.
Now, the point of all this mess is: could it be that, in general, spacebats don't go through oxidative stress despite the high production of ROS. Maybe despite evolving and not needing to fly anymore they have however still used this high radical tollerance to live more and without cancer. And so on.
But maybe Hordak lacks this mechanism and that is why his DNA got damaged, you know, the defect in his cloning. And that's why my baby is suffering.
This mechanism also allows bats to be more immune to viruses (yes, covid, no baby bats it's not your fault we stupid humans eat you). So maybe Hordak is truly more susceptible to viruses in general.

Theory: Annalisa's Not Awake And Neither Are We
I'm probably way off the mark here but there are some things that just really bothered me in this chapter and they can't just be a coincidence (or maybe they are and I need to sleep, but whatever) and I need to organize my thoughts, so...here they are.
1. How many times did Vasco tell us we HAD to stay awake? Like, at least 2, right? And the text was a different color? So then why did he insist on us getting some rest and let us go to sleep (for hours??) if, as he said, sleeping accelerates the effects of the Cantarella? At first, I shrugged it off because (if you don't do the Oracle tea party diamond scene) Vasco says it's ok to sleep once the antidote is in our system but...is it really? I mean, that acid-trip-adjacent thing with our fox/wolf/bear cub and the oracles happened after ingesting that dose of antidote, so clearly the symptoms are still very much present, so wouldn't sleeping still accelerate them? Or am I just overanalyzing? It just seems odd that they would so heavily emphasize not being able to sleep if they were gonna make it safe to sleep a couple scenes later.
2. Idk about Hunter because I haven't don't a playthrough with them yet, but at least for Kayden (I'm just gonna assume it's the same for both), when they come to our balcony, they never actually tell us what brought them there, do they? They just kinda show up and the MC kinda steers the beginning of the conversation. And like, if you choose the last dialogue option for the first choice on the balcony (something like "I dreamed you'd come"), Kayden (again, idk about Hunter) says something like "And how do you know you aren’t still dreaming?" and then that's that. They never say anything like "hey I just wanted to check on you" or "I came to profess my undying love" they kinda just roll with it after MC says I love you/kiss me/strip. And yes, I know MC thought it was a hallucination and then decided it wasn't, but what if her symptoms just got so much worse after sleeping that she can't tell the difference between hallucination and reality anymore because the hallucinations have gotten so much stronger? Or she never woke up at all, and she's having a hyper-realistic dream?
3. Which leads to number three. After we "go back to sleep" yet again, Vasco barges in and says he has the cure, but there's not a single dialogue or narration box that says that we actually used the cure. Vasco says he's got the cure, we smile, and then suddenly we're waking up again, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed with a narration box saying the cure has worked? How would we actually know if it worked? When did we go back to sleep? Why are we waking up alone? Especially since, if you don't do Kayden's diamond seen, they say they'll come to see MC when the sun rises?
4. Annalisa was (most likely) poisoned by a different type of poison than us. Now, because Annalisa said in chapter 1 that she had to meet with someone potentially important before meeting with Queen Kendra and we never found out who it was, there is a chance that person was Renza and that Renza slowly poisoned her with the Cantarella like she did to us and it was activated In the throne room, but for right now, I'm going to assume that's not the case and that Annalisa was poisoned with a FAST-ACTING poison in the throne room, unlike Cantarella, which we know to be slow-acting. Now, if this is in fact the case, then what are the chances that Vasco would have been able to create an antidote for us and for whatever poison Annalisa was suffering from using only our antidote?
5. Not only did we "wake up" alone, but Annalisa came in the room alone. Idk, it just seems too...casual for the situation. How much time has passed exactly since the masquerade ball? Because it really rubs me the wrong way that Vasco would somehow wake up Annalisa and then she'd be like "sweet, thanks bro" and just stroll into our room without anyone else (Vasco, Kayden, Hunter, even our pet?) coming with her either to make sure she's alright walking by herself (again idk how long it's been but muscle atrophy in coma patients is a legit thing) OR to check on us?
Idk, the end of that chapter just seemed to casual and too convenient for there not to be something going on.
Long story short my theory is this: because MC slept while still under the effects of the Cantarella, she's slipped into a coma-like state, similar to Annalisa, and now we're on the same...plane, I guess? as Annalisa, and the beginning of the next chapter is gonna be her being like, "so they got you, too, huh?"
Also The Oracle of the Present implied there will be another betrayal, so my money's on either Vasco or (if she actually is awake and this whole post was BS) Annalisa.

Blood and Bone
Prompt: Winter Date
Summary: Peridot’s peace is shattered by a welcome interruption.
Words: 1574
Peridot straps on her skates. Verdant eyes scan the frozen lake. Being undead has its downsides - such as always being cold and not gaining muscle mass - but there were perks. It meant she couldn't be colder than she already was. It meant she could skate on thin ice. Even if the ice breaks, it's not a threat, barely an inconvenience.
There was a time when Peridot longed for the sweet release of a stake to her arrested heart.
She takes this time to appreciate her second existence on Earth, as well as the serenity and beauty of winter. She takes slow spins on the ice, pristine snow banks and trees weighed down by twinkling white twirling around in her vision. She pauses at the sound of rustling, followed by a light growl. She casts her senses, but they hit a hastily thrown up barrier - one that somehow feels lazy and sarcastic. She knows it doesn't belong to the nearby pack's Alpha, all sharp and intimidating. She fights a smile, her suspicions already cemented.
Not a minute later, a large, white and furry mass slams into Peridot, and she is barely able to shriek before she's plowed into the snow.
Peridot surfaces, sputtering, to be greeted with the mischievous smile and bright violet eyes of her mate, her forbidden lover. Amethyst still wears her ears and tail, the latter of which wags fiercely, spraying snow everywhere. She licks Peridot's face just to be annoying, from her nose to the triangular tattoo on her forehead.
Peridot's eyes flick to Amethyst's Marrowbind - an uneven cluster of bone shards embedded in her chest that seal her fate as a Lycanthrope - where it's exposed by her loose purple top. Its purpose is similar to the Bloodmark above Peridot's eyes. Since she's a Bloodsworn - known by humans as a Vampire - Amethyst and her kind should be her sworn enemy.
Still Peridot questions, "What are you doing here?! This is clan land!"
"Aw, aren't you glad to see me Ankle Biter?"
Rolling her eyes at the nickname, Peridot scoffs, "Of course. It's just any Bloodsworn with a quarter of a wit could sense your fuzz bucket a mile away!"
"Only a mile huh? Man, I'm trying too hard."
"Trying to get us slain for treason, you mean."
Contradicting her sour tone, Peridot cups her cheeks and kisses her. She's bathed in warmth. Where the radiation of the sun fails to soak into her skin, and a candle no longer burns her flesh at a touch, Amethyst's supernatural heat blankets her.
Peridot isn't so arrogant to assume they're the first pair, but there's nothing on record. Discretion is the better part of valor. Peridot sags with relief when Amethyst nuzzles her neck. She gathers Peridot in her strong arms. Peridot is a bit of a sucker for being handled, especially since the disappointing discovery that no Bloodsworn were muscular eye candy. Any who were muscular when they Turned were soon to atrophy.
"I just missed you so much," Amethyst murmurs. "Not just 'cause it's moon week."
Peridot hums. Amethyst urges, "Come on, give me that nerd monologue."
"It's not a monologue!"
"Whatever you call it, my sensitive ears need that sweet music."
Despite the current ceasefire between their 'sides', Peridot is hesitant to encourage her. Swallowing her fears, Peridot obliges, beginning to idly chat about recent events and discussing her job and hobbies. During this, Amethyst hoists Peridot on her shoulders. She probably feels like a feather. Amethyst is no powerhouse compared to others in her pack, especially her Alpha. She's considered a runt, but that doesn't stop Peridot from enjoying the ripple of her muscles. Amethyst carries her through the woods and on a hike up the cliffside. All the while, Peridot has her sense out like a net.
As a young Vampire, Peridot never fought a Werewolf before Amethyst, and she was led to believe that her kind was superior and more indestructible. She was, in a word, cocky. One injury, a broken shin that threw her into war flashbacks, and she was down. Amethyst was wounded six ways to Sunday, bleeding and spitting blood, yet she fought like a storm of maternal ursine.
Until Peridot had started screaming and crying like Amethyst had ripped her legs clean off. Somehow recognizing the panic attack, Amethyst had approached cautiously, eventually getting permission to haul Peridot to a secluded area. She nursed her back to health. Peridot fled right after, fearing favors being extracted. When Amethyst asked nothing of her, they sat by a river in neutral territory over red meat and blood bags. For hours on any days that could be spared, they talked.
How she had been humbled. Humility became appreciation, they formed a friendship and… undying love. Peridot felt she could search ten thousand lifetimes and never forge a bond like this again. Overcoming her preconceived notions to give Amethyst a chance was the greatest decision she ever made. Love is worth the suffering, Peridot tells herself day to day, when the worries get the best of her.
Distantly, Peridot hears Amethyst ask if she's alright and the sound of snow crunching under bare feet. She must have lapsed into silence. She dives in where she's left off, more to distract herself from dark musings than anything.
As they reach the apex, Amethyst remarks, "It's so nice to hear the sound of your voice, chatting my ear off. My pack are all monosyllabic with the occasional grunt y'know?"
Peridot sinks her fingers into Amethyst's hair, broadcasting happiness that her mate can probably scent. She scratches her scalp, earning a low rumble that Peridot recognizes as the Lycan equivalent of a purr. Peridot says, "For my part, it's a liberating experience to actually have someone listen and care about what comes out of my mouth."
Her mind darts to her roommate. She's about the only Bloodsworn in Peridot's faction that she can stand, and they're friendly intellectual rivals at best.
She goes on, "Pearl is engaging, she doesn't talk down on me or outright ignore me like my superiors… but she's also an expert at turning the conversation to herself, and damned if she ever heeds anything important I'll tell her. She'll claim she misheard, when really she couldn't pull her head out of her self-important ass."
Peridot has the utmost respect for Pearl, though her words shadow it. Pearl is well aware Peridot trash talks her - it happens face to face, and Pearl gives as good as she gets. It's hard to believe the brazen rebel was once a human bloodslave surviving on the edge of desperation. Many of their kind consider her lesser - less capable, less intelligent, less powerful, less valuable. Between each other, they have trust and admiration enough to tease in good spirits.
Amethyst chuckles.
"Moon Goddess light my path! I hear that. Wish I had a sirloin for every time I spoke and my Alpha replied with 'no one cares'. Those stuck up butt-munches deserve each other." Amethyst mutters, "Copying us and acting like they invented the notion, pah."
Peridot chortles along. They stop. Peridot examines the hill, spotting a two person sled. Her eyes widen. She scrambles from Amethyst's back and attempts to escape, but Amethyst is too quick even for Vampiric speed. Of all species, Bloodsworn and Lycanthropes are the most well matched. It's unfathomable that they should use their compatibility for murder and misery.
Peridot protests, "I'll fall off, or you'll crash!"
"So hang on tight, ya dip. It's not like we'll die. We won't crash again anyway, I've got the hang of this thing. Promise."
Peridot shoots her a deadpan expression before she's dragged across the snow. It's the optimal consistency for sledding, and Peridot focuses on frozen water flakes instead of her terror frozen inside her, unable to evoke a proper response. Amethyst marches to the sled. Peridot has little choice but to clasp the lip while Amethyst settles behind her. Peridot takes to lecturing her in order to stay sane.
"My body, held up by the strings of dark magic, no longer produces adrenaline. Therefore, it lacks a fight or flight response, resulting in Bloodsworn being either overly reckless or overly cautious with no gauge or filter." Peridot continues, "Harrowing yet not life threatening situations are sensationally overwhelming and impossible to process."
"Yeah, and it's funny," Amethyst responds. “Like when I’m giving you hickeys and you just go limp.”
As her lungs no longer have to trifle with the mortal requirement of breathing, Peridot screams without pause the whole way down. Amethyst laughs like a maniac behind her. Lycanthropy causes her to constantly be high on adrenaline, seeking thrills. She at least shows she cares by having a firm grip of Peridot's small waist. Amethyst has added several ramps, and she yells out points for herself throughout the ride. She guides the sled by throwing her body weight alone, and there's numerous near misses. Amethyst shifts her hand into a paw and digs it into the ground to bring the sled to a gradual halt.
Peridot stumbles off on shaky legs and collapses face first into the snow. The tremble spreads to her body, which is immediately wrung out as though she ran ten thousand miles without replenishing on blood. Amethyst turns her over and rests her in the crook of her arm, stroking her forehead. Amethyst always coddles her after these experiences, so it's not lacking in benefits.

The 100 5x11 "The Dark Year" Review
Episode 11 picks up where Episode 10 left off, shortly after Clarke’s found her mother unconscious from an overdose. With Madi’s help, she pumps Abby’s stomach and gets her conscious again, but Abby is ashamed of her state, much as she was after coming out of the City of Light in Season 3. At Abby’s recommendation, Clarke ties Abby down and administers an opioid blocker to put her into detox quickly. As Abby fades in and out of consciousness, we see her flash back to two years after Praimfaya, the beginning of the ominously-named Dark Year.
Everything in the flashbacks is filmed with a shorter focal length than normal, with lots of camera tilts, giving everything an unsteady, upsetting feeling. A fungus has destroyed the soybean crop, meaning they have no source of protein. Cooper was able to salvage some seeds, but it’ll take a year before they can eat from them again. And if they don’t get 10% of their calories from protein, Abby says, they’ll starve.
Abby immediately knows that they need to eat the executed criminals, suggesting it so quickly that it seems she must have thought ahead to this possibility. It’s ironic that Abby used the horror of cannibalism to convince the Sky People to let the grounders back into the main part of the bunker during "Red Queen" (remember, she painted a pretty horrific picture for Cooper about how as the people starved, they’d turn to cannibalism) only to have to encourage cannibalism less than two years later.
A group of people sit in the bunker, palm-sized cubes of a red, gelatinous substance before them on each of their lunch trays. Octavia takes the first bite, encouraging the rest to do the same, but Kane stands up and tells them that it’s their choice. Several people get up and leave along with Kane. But Abby later tells Octavia that she can’t allow them to abstain from eating; if they do, they’ll starve to death, but their muscles will atrophy and there won’t be enough meat on them to eat. She doesn’t even want Octavia to make an exception for Kane, because she knows that he’s the key.
At the next meal, Octavia confronts those who refuse to eat, ultimately shooting and killing several, before Kane breaks and takes a bite, which leads the rest of the people to. Octavia and Abby knew that Kane wouldn’t break if Octavia threatened to kill him, but he would do it to save other people’s lives.
As Abby detoxes, she becomes cruel, struggling against the restraints that she had Clarke put on her. Much like when Raven was possessed by ALIE, Abby tears into Clarke for being the one who decides who lives and who dies and tries to convince Madi to stop Clarke from continuing the detox. Once she gets through the worst of it, and out of her Dark Year flashbacks, however, Abby confides in her daughter what she had been responsible for and why she became addicted to the pain medication.
The detox works, and Abby is able to resume her work curing the miners. Madi is less than thrilled that they’re helping McCreary, and tries to sneak up and stab him while he’s on the examination table. Clarke sees the knife and heads her off, but Madi can’t understand why Clarke is siding with McCreary over Octavia. “She bore it so they didn’t have to,” she says, echoing Dante Wallace’s and Clarke’s words from the past. We never saw Clarke say the phrase to Lexa, so the few hours the Flame was in Clarke’s head must have been enough for it to record her memories as well as those of the past commanders. But Octavia didn’t bear anything for her people; clearly Wonkru is still traumatized. “We’re on the wrong side of this war,” Madi claims, but Clarke says, “But you get to live.” Madi echoes Abby’s words, asking how they can live with themselves.
Most of Spacekru, Kane, and Zeke are all hiding out in a cave with Diyoza and her people. As they try to set up a radio so they can contact Bellamy, they realize that McCreary’s men are mobilizing at the entry points to the valley, which means Wonkru must be marching. Echo manages to get in touch with Bellamy, both of them speaking Trig in case McCreary’s men intercept it. Bellamy points out that if Clarke is with McCreary, she could translate, and Echo says that she’ll “deal with Clarke later.”
(Girl, if Bellamy was willing to poison his own sister to keep her safe, I highly doubt he’s gonna let you “deal” with her. But at Conageddon, Tasya Teles teased that there would be a big action sequence between Clarke and Echo.) Echo takes charge and leads Raven, Murphy, and Emori out to scout for ways for the Wonkru army to get into the valley and defeat McCreary. Kane wants to come, but Echo refuses, saying he has to earn her trust. (Funny, since she hasn’t really earned anyone else’s.)
As the four Spacekru members crouch in the snow at the top of a pass, watching Eligius building gunner positions, Murphy spots a box of guns and ammunition. “They can’t shoot us with what they don’t have,” he points out, so they creep over to steal them. But they get caught and surrounded. Just as they think they’re about to die, Zeke bursts out of the underbrush and offers a trade: himself for their lives. The Eligius men decide to take him and still kill the others, but as they grab Zeke, he surprises them with his hand-to-hand fighting skills and kills them all. He tries to talk to Raven, but she’s furious and storms off.
It’s possible that him offering to surrender himself reminded her of Finn’s surrendering to the grounders and subsequent death, and Raven avoids Zeke because she’s realizing her feelings for him. After they report their findings to Diyoza, she realizes she dropped her notebook when they were fleeing — a notebook that had plans for every possibility she could think of. And we all know how brilliant she is. She does manage to think of one plan, but we don’t get to hear it yet…
When Octavia’s army first starts their march, Bellamy and Indra warn her that she’s leading them into a trap, because McCreary knows they’re coming, but she doesn’t care. When they later get the plan from Echo, Octavia seems grateful to Echo for once, and tries to reconnect with her brother (who has just ignored a proffered hand from Miller). Bellamy tells Octavia that his terms for helping her are that they accept Eligius’ surrender; no executions, no fighting pits, and that they live in peace.
Octavia agrees, upset that he doesn’t think that’s what she wants, and says that they’re back to how they’re meant to be: fighting side by side. But this doesn’t seem to make Echo feel any better; is she realizing that everything did change on the ground, despite Bellamy’s assurances otherwise? She goes over the plan one last time, and the shot of her map transitions into the map Bellamy is using to go over the plan with Octavia and her generals.
The night before the war, Bellamy sits alone by a fire, his hand on Echo’s sword sheath. He’s lost Octavia, he’s lost Clarke; Echo and Spacekru are all he has. Monty joins him, and they discuss the future. Once the war is won, Spacekru will take 80 acres separate from the others. “Grow something other than algae,” he teases Monty.
But of course, things aren’t going to go as planned. The last few episodes have set up a very similar plot to Mount Weather in Season 2, and right on schedule comes the betrayal. Kane and Diyoza come to McCreary to doublecross Octavia; Kane would rather have the monster win the valley than the devil.
Abby’s Addiction
Let me start this section by saying that I’ve been kind of uncomfortable with Abby’s storyline ever since her addiction was introduced. With this being my last episode to review and it being nearly the end of the season, I decided it was time to address it. My heart sank a little when we saw her take pain medication on-screen in 5x02, “Red Queen,” because more often than not, onscreen pain medication use leads to an addiction storyline. And in my opinion, these storylines contribute to the stigma surrounding pain medication, specifically opioids.
In this episode Diyoza says, “Opiates are a bitch. Back in the service, I lost more men to pills than war.” (Let me just say that when you’re in the kind of pain that tylenol and mindfulness won’t do a thing for, opioids are definitely not “a bitch.”) Yes, of course opioid addiction is a very real and serious thing that many people deal with. But as someone with chronic pain who has a prescription for codeine (an opioid) for as-needed pain relief, I know that the panic around the opioid epidemic has made it exponentially more difficult for people with chronic pain to get the pain relief they need.
Statistically, addiction is far more likely to happen with patients with acute (temporary) pain who get over-prescribed opioid pain medications than it is with chronic pain patients, which is one thing The 100 got right with Abby’s storyline. She did have some longer-term pain from being removed from the City of Light, as Raven did, and she started taking the pain meds then. But after she fixed the source of the headaches, she continued taking them. If they had done this with Raven (who still has chronic pain), I’d have been very upset.
But why does this matter, Michaela, you ask, it’s just a TV show. Well, let me talk about something happening in the US right now. Currently before Oregon Medicaid is a plan to force a taper to 0 mg of all opioid-receiving pain patients. If this plan goes through, every person with chronic pain in the state of Oregon will no longer have access to much-needed pain relief, with the replacement treatments being cognitive behavior therapy, acupuncture, mindfulness, pain acceptance, and treatment with non-opioid medications, such as Tylenol.
Now, if these things work for you, great! But opioids are generally only prescribed to chronic pain patients after exhausting many other possibilities. I’ll stop before I get on too much of a soapbox here, but basically: television has an impact on society, as I’m sure everyone in this fandom knows. And when every character who ever uses pain medication long-term on television is an addict (another notable example is Dr. House from House, MD), the general public, who don’t know any people with chronic pain, are going to associate long-term pain medication use with addiction, which only hurts pain patients further. While Paige Turco is absolutely doing an incredible acting job as Abby, I’m disappointed in The 100 for perpetuating this.
Something that could have made this storyline work is showing Abby’s point of view on it, but instead we only see her addiction through the eyes of other characters and how it affects them; Kane, Diyoza, and Raven, for example. This storyline feels like something pulled from a different show and not successfully woven in with this narrative, unlike the other addiction storylines we’ve seen (Jasper’s alcoholism and wanting to stay in the City of Light, and to an extent, Raven’s City of Light story). Because it’s not successfully done, Abby’s storyline only takes time away from other plots that are more central to the story.
There Are No Good Guys
Octavia continues to cry out “CHOOSE,” but consistently takes away her people’s choice. She asks for her advisors to give her another choice, but when there is one clearly available, she refuses to take it. As Clarke pointed out in Season 4, “only choice” is an oxymoron.
While it’s true that there wasn’t really another choice during the Dark Year when they needed a source of protein, she has certainly had other options since then, most notably that Wonkru could have survived in Polis once Monty got the hydrofarm running, with the long-term plan of using his algae to make the soil fertile again. But rather than giving her people the option to stay there and live in peace, or to surrender to Diyoza and live in the valley in peace, Octavia burned down the hydrofarm to force the war she’s been hankering for. Octavia keeps thinking about the next thing; “Once we get in the bunker, things will be better.” “Once I unite the clans, things will be better.” “Once we get through the Dark Year, things will be better.” “Once we get out of the bunker, things will be better.” “Once we get to the valley, things will be better.” It’s never-ceasing, and things never are better. If Wonkru wins the battle for the valley, there will just be another thing, and Octavia will continue doing more and more horrible things.
As Clarke said in the season premiere, “what happens to the Commander of Death when there is no one left to kill?” Clarke was able to wash away the pain of the past and start fresh (as much as one can after going through what she has), but I don’t see any realistic way that Octavia will be able to — all the huge moments that could have snapped her out of her tyrannical state have had no effect on her, and she has just dug herself further into the darkness.
Abby is doing this to an extent, too — in the promo for 5x12, “Damocles Pt 1,” we see her repeat, “First we survive, then we find our humanity again.” But what happens if you’ve gone too far? What a contrast it is from Season 1 when Marcus told her, “I choose at every turn and at every cost to make sure that the human race stays alive,” and Abby responded, “That’s the difference between us, Kane. I make sure we deserve to stay alive.”
That’s still the difference between them, though their roles have switched. Marcus knows that there are some lines you can’t uncross, and would rather die than lose his humanity and compromise his morals. But Abby wants to survive at any cost, and even encourages Octavia to do something unthinkable — execute those who won’t become cannibals — to keep Wonkru alive.
The show’s insistence that “there are no good guys” also conversely implies that there are no bad guys, which isn’t the case. Moral greyness has always been a The 100 specialty, but this season they’re trying to make it all equally grey, when in fact some things are still black and white. There are good people, and there are bad people, and there are people in between — none of them is innocent, to quote Maya Vie, and none of them is 100% evil. They all do have their reasons for what they’ve done, and while we’ve seen two flashbacks of how Octavia became Blodreina, this in no way excuses what she — or any of the characters — has done. As Jake Peralta would say, “Cool motive, still murder.”
Looks Like Meat’s Back on the Menu, Boys
A big question raised by "The Dark Year" is whether cannibalism is ever morally acceptable. For me, the answer is “possibly.” While I would never be okay with killing people just to eat them, if the people were already dead (from a non-transferrable cause) and I were starving, I would probably be okay with it — I’ve never attached all that much significance to a body once it’s dead.
But what Octavia did (at Abby’s advice) — killing anyone who refused to eat the human flesh before them — was objectively morally wrong, no matter how much the show tries to push the “there are no good/bad guys” theme. And forcing a fight to the death as punishment for crimes, and then EATING THE LOSERS is just awful. I mean, as harsh as the Ark was, they executed people humanely. I feel like there must have been better options for entertainment than actual gladiator fights — too bad they killed the guy with the guitar in the "Red Queen" flashback.
Before Season 5 premiered, the cast teased that there was a scene that made everyone on set sick, and I’m guessing that was the cannibalism flashback. Those weird jello cubes looked pretty gross, and with the association of them as human flesh… well, you can imagine. Also, what was with the perfect tuna-sashimi-looking cubes?! Like, if you have to eat people, at least try to make it not-gross. Cut it up and put it in the soup; make tacos out of it; ANYTHING but just a hunk of raw-looking grossness.
Human flesh would not be safe to eat raw, so they must have treated it in some way; my roommate suggested that it looks like it may have been ground it up and made it into a spam-like food. Mechanically-separated people, if you will. Yummy. “I’ll have a Big Gulp of highly-filtered urine and some Bunker Nuggets!” “Would you like Palm Frites or Ta-toe Tots with that? Any Man-na Cotta for dessert?” (You have my roommate to blame for that one.)
It’s possible that they intentionally dwelt on the meat as being human to keep from normalizing it, in contrast to Mount Weather hiding the grounders from sight and sanitizing the whole process, dissociating from what they were actually doing. After so long of using grounders to filter their blood, the residents of Mount Weather were mostly okay with it, whereas the people in the bunker are still horrified and traumatized five years later from the cannibalism.
And it’s a good thing that they didn’t normalize it — many fans think they might still be supplementing their rations with human flesh, but I don’t think they are, because it was always a necessary-but-horrific thing. And in Mount Weather, they allowed people with moral objections to abstain from the blood transfusions, but that came back to bite them because those same people helped the delinquents overthrow the mountain. I wonder if Abby had this in mind when she encouraged Octavia to enforce the cannibalism, breaking the people’s spirits and forcing unity.
An Echo in Space
Before Season 5 premiered, we were told many times by actors, writers, and other crew on The 100 that Echo would be much changed from where she was before the time jump, and that she would be an integral part of the self-titled Spacekru who we would love. But honestly, nearly every time Echo is on screen I find myself rolling my eyes.
The rest of Spacekru keep talking about how she proved herself during the six years they were in space, but really, those six years were more like stasis. There were no enemies to fight, no options for betrayal. They simply lived. But now that they’re back on the ground, with outside forces exerting pressure on their little family, Echo has been slipping back into her old ways, betraying Raven’s trust in Shaw, threatening to kill him despite Raven’s pleas, saying she’ll “deal with Clarke,” and all-around just...not being very likeable.
It’s no secret that I ship Bellarke, but my dislike of Echo barely even has anything to do with her relationship with Bellamy. Back at the end of Season 2, when she was introduced, I was intrigued and actually thought a relationship between her and Bellamy could be interesting. Her character has had so much potential, but keeps falling flat. Imagine if she had decided to stay behind when Lexa ordered the retreat from Mount Weather, because she believed that it was wrong, like Lincoln did.
I mean, if we even had a single flashback of her so-called “proving” herself in space, I could swallow it. When she decided to “defect” to Eligius and spy, and hid the flash drive in the other woman’s bullet wound, I was excited to see her actually be the spy she’s been described as, but again, she betrayed the one friend they had as well as Raven’s trust (side note: it’s been said multiple times that Echo and Raven are close, but I’ve seen no evidence of that). Echo continues to be just that; an echo, continuing old habits and rarely showing any dimension.
Zaven
The best moment of the episode was undoubtedly when Raven pulled Zeke (still not calling him Miles) over to herself for a kiss, after avoiding him for four days. She’d realized when he put his life in danger to save hers that she cared for him, and finally acted on her feelings. Many fans of Raven’s had been shipping the two ever since Jordan Bolger’s character was announced for Season 5 and described as “a self-professed adrenaline junkie brimming with brains, wit and bravado.”
It’s been nearly three seasons since Raven has had a love interest, and has had to go through some incredibly difficult things by herself. Of course, romantic love isn’t all that matters, but the girl deserves to kiss a cute boy every now and then. I’m going to be pretty upset if Zeke doesn’t survive the season, after everything they’ve put Raven through. He and Diyoza have been such a wonderful addition to the cast, especially as characters from closer to the present, and I sincerely hope to see both of them (and Diyoza’s baby) in Season 6!

Eugh, this is such a mess, I've got to tell you, I don’t trust that this guy knew enough to make it worth our while. Cassian do you have anymore more ideas on how we can go about this next part? Anything that you can think of that we may have overlooked Jyn? Now don’t be shy, it’s an all hands on deck type situation, we have on our hands here!” Dacia goaded her two friends into speaking.
“No, but if we interview Designation: Hawkeye, it’s possible that he might know more about this problem. Or at the very least he might know more about what was diving Designation (Former): Captain America’s intentions. At one stage he might have been part of the guy’s inner circle. It’s a bit of a long shot, but we might be able to find something else if we simply find the right questions to ask.” Jyn told the two thoughtfully.
“You’re right, at one stage he might have been part of Designation (Former): Captain America inner circle. They did after all have the same former employer, do you think he might have had some inclination on what the guy was thinking or on what his end goals were.” Dacia allowed the man, nodding her head in answer.
“Okay, well at one point they shared the same employer, can we point out any instances where the two of them may have shared missions separate from the Avengers? Don’t forget that the guy stepped back from the Avengers after the Sokovia mess, so anything he could give us might (and probably) is outdated.” Cassian pointed out, not willing to want for the girls to begin building their hopes up to something, that may simply be a longshot.
“At this point, it’s the only chance we’ve got. Jyn have you gotten any further in scrubbing that video? The first one I mean?” Dacia sighed.
“Yes, I have, but as per always, there are plusses and minuses to the whole thing. We can’t be sure whether or not Designation (Former): Captain America shared that intel with anyone else. Until we can interview Designation: Falcon, we won’t know if he ever shared with him. When will we be interviewing him again?” Jyn angrily summarised for the other two.
“We still have a few more to do before we get to him. I figured that I could set up in order of the people who may or may not have been taken into the man’s inner circle. Though, I imagine that it will be fairly unlikely that we can get any answers until we can question the man himself.” Dacia told the man, having glanced down at her notes.
“It is still up in the air, as to whether or not we can trust anything that the man gives us. You’ve been how compartmentalised the man seems to operate; everything is kept on a strictly need to know basis. And right now, it doesn’t seem as if we need to know.” Jyn sighed, still not sure how she should go about the next few days.
Saw Guerra hadn’t spared much time ensuring that the woman knew proper interrogation methods. Or at least the ones that he had thought to impart, where either outright illegal or very unethical, with the highly suspect operating procedure. Jyn was aware that Cassian seemed to have it in his head that Jyn was a frightened lamb, and who was she to show his beliefs to be false. Cassian might have worked within the Resistance, but he wasn’t completely familiar with some of the underhanded methods that Jyn reckoned worked quite well for her.
Jyn didn’t like having to tap into those lessons, not while she had any other option, another choice, because if there was one thing that she was sure off, it was that there was usually a choice. At least that was what Dacia was fond of protesting, was that there was always a choice. Jyn wasn’t sure if she had ever been able to say that there would always be a choice, she tended to walk on a bit of a darker path in life too often for her to be comfortable pretending that everything was black and white. It might be a depressing thing for her to admit that was comfortable walking in shades of grey. She felt that Cassian was more likely to understand this unique facet of her personality. She wasn’t comfortable getting into it with the man; she wasn’t sure how easy it would be for her to tell the man some of what she was already working with. Her demons were her own; they weren’t the man’s, nobody else could deal with them but her.
“Do you think there will chance that we manage to apprehend Designation: Black Widow anytime, she would probably know more about what was going through the man’s head. At least, if she is as good at her job as she likes to think, somehow I don’t think she’s that good.” Cassian started in frustration.
“How do you mean Cassian?” Dacia asked prodding the man for further answered.
“Well, from reading some of the, for want of a better term, the lore surrounding the infamous Black Widow spies, we know that they were exceptionally good at their jobs and feared by adversaries. What if Romanova spent too much believing in her hype to realise that a muscle that isn’t used, or challenged it can atrophy. My analogy got away from me a bit there, sorry about that. But I’d need to look more at how Romanova came onto S.H.I.E.L.Ds’ radar, though dollars to doughnuts I’m going to guess that there might have been something more going on beneath the surface. We’ve read portions from her observation of Dr Stark, back where they first met, the results of that analysis were seriously flawed.”
“Okay, well we can work with this right? Jyn are you closer to pulling the noose around Designation: Black Widow’s hiding place?” Dacia asked, turning to face Jyn.
“Not a lot of luck so far, I have managed to drop some listening programs on various spy agencies across the world. I have managed to get into contact with some European Agencies, which should tell you that some suspicions are that the woman could be found in Europe. Though I would like the caution you that I can’t say with any degree of certainty where the woman is. I have been working with them to find her, which I can say with utmost certainty that we will find her. I don’t give up easily.” Jyn told the two with a funny look on her face.
“Oh dear, this has become personal to you hasn’t?” Cassian laughed.
“Afraid so. You know as well as I do that quitting isn’t in my repertoire, at least not while Saw was around to oversee me growing up. I mean for pities sake if I was able to just throw in the towel from time to time, I very likely wouldn’t have made it this far.” Jyn joked back, with a thunderous look on her face.
“No, no, that’s fine, but for now I think we need to be aware that we will still have a lot of work to do. For now, though, we need to get on with the rest of the interviews. Who is taking Designation: Hawkeye?” Cassian laughed, his mood turning quickly serious as he turned to face Dacia.
“Well, I’ve met him before as Darcy, and perhaps for myself, I want to know whether or not he remembers me.” Dacia frowned.
“You know that’s it’s fairly unlikely that he remember you? He might just remember who his targets were, if you kept yourself to the sidelines as much as you’ve told us, he might not have spared you much of a second glance.” Cassian gently reminded the woman.
“Call it professional curiosity, if you will, but I want to know if someone suspected me of being capable of more than I let on! We might have received information from Hill that they didn’t suspect me, something which pleases me, but at the same time disappoints me. I’m left to believe that it was no wonder that HYDRA had a foothold in S.H.I.E.L.D if they didn’t recognise when the wool was being pulled over their eyes!” Dacia protested.
“Very well, but don’t forget that you are very good at what you do. We all worked together to make that identity watertight; they probably didn’t notice. Do you want one of us in as security?” Cassian tried to reign in a rising temper.
“Yeah, it might hurt my deep in my feminist soul, but Cassian would you mind standing at the back, to at least provide the illusion of tightened security. While I could probably take him down if I needed to, I don’t want to overplay our hand. They might be on this spaceship, but for at least now, they will have no idea who we are and why we have them.” Dacia sighed, fidgeting with her hands as she spoke.
“Sure, will we go now?” Cassian nodded his head in assent.
“Certainly, I’ve got a feeling that this may take us longer than the Designation: Ant-Man interview, after you!” Dacia started for the exit to the room.
WHOOSH
Both Cassian and Dacia were quiet as they made their way through the corridors of the spaceship, both were lost in their thoughts as they wrestled with getting their thoughts together on which questions they wanted to ask. Neither of them was concerned that the man would be able to hide anything, they both knew how to ask the right questions and trip the man up, to the point where they would only need to worry about the man wasting their time. Dacia for one was aware that it would be all too easy for her to torture the man, but she didn’t think that she would get particularly trustworthy answers from the man. Glancing briefly at Cassian, she felt a sudden surge of relief flowing through her, knowing that the man would at least have her back and would be able to spot anything that Dacia had missed.
“You ready for this?” Cassian asked, his voice cutting through the silence like a bullet.
“Are we ever truly ready for what we have to do?” Dacia rhetorically asked.
“Fair enough, but you know what you have to ask him right? We might not have a lot of opportunities if we screw this up after all. We can always question him again, but the one thing that we can’t get back is the element of surprise.” Cassian reasoned in a calm tone of voice.
“Yeah, I will be ready, I know what to ask him, and even if he does no verbally tell us what we need to know, his body language might just give us a hint of what is happening. At the very least though, we need be able to get to the bottom of things and try to understand what may have been driving at Designation (Former): Captain America. Even if he can’t tell us that, he might be able to give us some indication of why he came out of retirement.”
“You know, I doubt that he was ever truly retired. Take it from a spy, and an assassin all rolled into one but what I can tell you, is that it would take trauma to step back. What I mean is that it could take something massive to make him step back. The guy took a very big risk in coming out and taking Designation: Scarlet Witch from the Compound. There is something about how this guy operated that doesn’t strike me as a right; we need to get to the bottom of this, it doesn’t all add up to me.” Cassian grumbled.
“I have heard this theory before, but right now we have a chance to play around with your theory. We need to work this man over, now come on, I don’t want to waste this chance.” Dacia laughed before she hurried away from the man.
Looking back over her shoulder at the man, Dacia momentarily waited for the man to catch up with her before entering into the prison cells. Nodding to one another briefly, they both pulled up their cloaks, wanting to make sure that they at least prested a united front.
As one, the two of them entered the room together, and without even having to glance at each other, they knew what they had come here to do. Cassian glanced over at the cell that contained Designation: Ant-Man and had to hide an eye roll. He wasn’t sure whether or not he could claim to feel any guilt or sympathy for the man, because whoever went out to fight without understanding what they were fighting (and potentially dying) for?!
Looking down at the computer in front of him, Cassian briefly glanced at the keys in front of him; he sometimes felt like he had zoned out when he was deep in thought. Looking over to where Dacia was slowly making her way over to Designation: Hawkeye’s cell, he frowned in confusion when he noticed the woman slowing down her steps.
Dacia looked briefly into the cell, where she could easily see the agitated man pacing back and forth. Realising that she wouldn’t even be able to use her surprise appearance against the guy, she could see that the man had seen her. Faltering in her steps, Dacia thought to herself quickly. She knew that she would get that best chance to nail this guy against the wall if Cassian went in to get the guy. He at least would be able to use his bulk to surprise the man and take him out to the interview room.
Making her way over to Cassian, she gestured the man to lean down and quietly whispered in his ears.
“He’s agitated in there; it might be better if you grab him and we can walk him down to the interrogation interview room.”
Cassian paused and looked at Dacia, considering her carefully before choosing which action he should take next. Nodding his head once, he smoothly made his way over to the correct cell. Glancing over his shoulder at Dacia, he checked that she was still standing in his previous spot over by the central computer console. Side-stepping a little so that he could reach the small panel alongside the cell doors. Flicking through the functions, he listened for the telltale clicking of the locks. When he heard the noise of the other doors clicking shut, he manipulated the lock to Designation: Hawkeye’s doors. Flicking the digital toggle over to open, Cassian shifted his weight from one foot to another, when he saw the word OPEN printed, he stepped in front of the door, wanting to block the exit with his body. He didn’t want to see what would happen if Designation: Hawkeye should decide to bum rush him.
Stepping through the door to the cell, Cassian wrenched the man’s wrists behind his back and cuffed them together. Feeling like he looked as if he was frog-marching the guy from the small cell. Nodding over to Dacia as he passed her, she nodded and peeled away from her spot standing at the computer. The trio must have made a strange sight as they made their way through the spaceship, Dacia glanced up at one of the security cameras swivelling round to face the small group, she smirked a little wondering if Jyn was also being amused watching them.
Dacia wondered idly to herself if Designation: Hawkeye realised that no one was listening to his inane threats. Dacia had to roll her eyes at some of the threats; she wasn’t even sure how they were possible, never mind that the guy was currently tied up. Even if he weren’t, Dacia was sure that a few of them would be difficult to perform. Never mind how unsanitary they could be! Dacia wasn’t sure if she should feel like she had to hide the eye rolls, she might not be looking at Cassian, but she knew that the guy was probably also struggling to hide his eye rolling.
Yanked from her thoughts, with a slightly violent twinge, Dacia realised that they had arrived at the small room which she hoped that she wouldn’t have to spend any longer than completely necessary. Making her way through the sliding door after Cassian and Designation: Hawkeye, she idly watched as the Cassian securely cuffed the man to the desk.
When Cassian felt like he could be comfortable enough with how tightly fastened he had the man, secured from both his ankles and wrists, he nodded at Dacia. She peered back at the man and stepped forward to take her seat in the metallic seat opposite the man. Folding her hands together on the table in front of her, Dacia looked at the man, trying to get the measure of him before she spoke to him. Dacia wanted to build up the pressure and possibly throw the man from his comfort zone. Choosing to put the man out of his misery she began to speak in a low and measured tone.
“So, tell me Designation: Hawkeye, this situation arose when you were lifted from the R.A.F.T prison, just so we can get this interview off to the most productive start, can you tell me that you know why you are here?” Dacia started, peering across at the man.
“No, what the hell is going on here? This is all Stark’s fault! I wouldn’t be in this situation if that guy didn't decide to get involved with something that he didn’t understand. It was none of his business; he didn’t have to do any of this!” Designation: Hawkeye started to protest.
His words inspired a snort from Cassian; he could easily see an irony in the man protesting that someone else did not understand something. It was mildly amusing that the man, who had walked out of safety and retirement to fight in a situation that didn’t need to bother him at all.
“That is funny that you should say that. After all, you didn’t need to get involved, you were supposed to be retired, so forgive me for the stupid question; but how was the Accords going to affect you? You had stepped back from the Avengers after the Sokovia disaster, so you weren’t likely to have to use your abilities, at least not unless you were planning to march into another country. You weren’t were you?” Dacia lightly asked.
“No! Of course, not, but I got the call from Steve that Stark was keeping Wanda captive in the Compound. I had to go in and rescue her; she is just a kid!” Designation: Hawkeye cried out confused.
“Sir, Ms Maximoff is not a kid, she is in her early twenties, on what planet does that make her a kid! But we will go into her background, or at least what we know about it later, first we have to understand what led you to get involved.” Dacia shot back, not even bothering to look up.
Cassian, however, felt like he had to wonder what exactly was going through the man’s head. He wondered briefly if the man was aware of how much he was beginning to sound like a broken record. He wondered idly to himself whether or not he should begin to feel concerned for the man’s sanity. Deciding to himself that he would prefer to simply listen to the man, he shifted his weight and continued to listen to the man.
“Okay, going back a little, can you please explain to us what happened to you when S.H.I.E.L.D? Where you called in then? Where were you when those Helicarriers came down in the Potomac?”
“I heard later that S.H.I.E.L.D had been infiltrated by HYDRA, but I was on a simple milk run of a mission. Even if they had called me in, I wouldn’t have been able to get back in time to help them. I still don’t completely understand why Nat had to dump all of those files; it put so many people in danger, it put me in danger!” Designation: Hawkeye protested, only becoming stymied when he couldn’t cross his arms due to the cuffs around his wrists.
“Okay, but what makes you decide that your life is more important than others. Do you know if a lot of agents exposed were HYDRA members?” Dacia rhetorically asked before she held up a hand before she continued “I’ll tell you there was less than a third who were HYDRA. But do you know how many lost their lives due to that quite frankly immature and irresponsible action cost the agents? That, of course, is regardless of where their loyalties. But maybe you figure that the only good HYDRA agent is a dead HYDRA agent? I don’t entirely disagree with this thinking; goodness knows that I have done this thinking before in the past, I didn’t particularly enjoy it. I will share with you that about fifty-five percent of agents, were killed. Do you by any chance support the actions of the woman?”
“No, but that’s got to be a mistake, why would it have been labelled as an infestation if they were that few among the numbers who were HYDRA agents. Nat is supposed to be so good at everything why would she make such an amateur mistake?”
“We can’t begin to fathom her actions, I don’t think that anyone can, and any chance that we might have had to understand her actions were well and truly scuppered when she arrogantly told Congress to take a hike. She told them that she was too good, too indispensable to be arrested. Now, I’ve got to say we faced that arrogance in our Home Universe because we aren’t from here you know, but to get back to my point and to cut a long story short it wasn’t good. Do you know that a lot or even any of the forty-five percent were saved? Or did you keep yourself separate from those in S.H.I.E.L.D. who weren’t Avengers? Who you saw as below you because they hadn’t attained that level?”
“That sounds like not a lot was saved, are you sure about that number? But I’m sure that you are going to tell me some lies about how those people were saved. The members of S.H.I.E.L.D never forgave me for my actions on the Helicarrier, even though I was brainwashed. They would have sooner added more petrol to my body if I was on fire, rather than help me because they could only see it as my hands had killed their friends and partners on that Helicarrier.” Designation: Hawkeye asked, beginning to affect a confused look.
“That’s right; I am going to tell you, it was Dr Stark and his efforts that saved so many agents. You can, of course, argue that he still lost too many, I’m not going to stop you from arguing this. I do wonder though why Dr. Stark wasn’t called in? Hadn’t Dr Stark stepped in to stop it from becoming too uncomfortable and dangerous for you, giving you home until you could trust yourself enough to go home? Not that you told him where that home was. But anyway she didn’t just release files of the agents, but rather everything, this includes medical information, current whereabouts, possible extraction plans, also information about families. She also released sensitive information such as the current living arrangements of some of those who were in witness protection programmes, due to S.H.I.E.L.D. involvement and activities. But hey that was skin off her nose, she could protect herself, right? What was more, was that very little, if anything, was filtered, everything was leaked. If she had called in Dr Stark, from the get-go, then so much information could have been saved. I still wonder why she didn’t call him in.”
“She told me later that she didn’t know who she could trust. I’m speaking hyperbolically here, but that her faith in the organisation that she had worked for after she had defected, she didn’t want to reach out to a bad actor so to speak. I’m not sure what made her decide to make that call, Stark until that point had been a solid allie, he wouldn’t have betrayed us THEN without good reason.”
“But why did she feel like she couldn’t trust Dr Stark, they fought together, as you did during New York, did she tell you why she felt like she couldn’t trust him?”
“She told me that she didn’t feel as if she could trust the man, based on his initial report.”
“You realise that she wrote the report? It was a flawed report, she went in with preconceived notions, ready to judge the man. I’m not sure how you would term that in intelligence circles, but on an investigatory basis, that’s a bad thing. She wasn’t going with an open mind, so anything that she saw about the man, she was going to make sure that it backed up her previously held judgements. Furthermore, she went in while S.H.I.E.L.D. knew that he was dying, so anything that she observed would not have shown the man in a normal mind frame. He was dying, and normally when people are dying, they tend to act out a bit. So, I’ll ask you again did the woman have any reason for her not to trust and reach out to Dr Stark?”
“Look, you didn’t hear it from me, but Nat wasn’t acting like her usual cold self whenever I had a chance to interact with her. Look, we both know that I love the woman like a sister, but she frustrates me a lot sometimes. Especially with some of her typical lines such as ‘love belongs to children’ I don’t agree with her there. She sounded like a damaged mark when she said that, it sounded as if it ripped from something she forced herself to believe, rather than actually wanted to believe.”
“You mean that you suspect that the woman could have had something going on with someone? I will tell you some of what we suspect about the woman, shall I?” Dacia lightly asked.
“Hell, I gave up trying to understand that woman years ago. Be my guest.” Designation: Hawkeye tried to gesture to Dacia to continue.
“Have you ever heard the phrase ‘the lady doth protest’? I’m sure I’m butchering that phrase, there are probably English Literature students out there crying over my words. See, what we think is that the woman was beginning to feel something for Rogers, she allowed that to manifest into a blindside. She didn’t know what to do with the new emotions that grew up within her towards the man, so she listened to him, and she put his judgement and orders before hers. We can’t even pretend that the woman’s judgement was completely sound if you are confused to think back on some of what we said.”
“But she always said that love was for children. She couldn’t have felt anything for the guy, at least not anything romantic. How can you even say that about the woman?” Designation: Hawkeye shot back starting to sound like a broken record.
“We don’t think a lot of someones that gets themselves into situations where they begin to question their every move, simply because they fall for a pair of baby blue eyes. We’ve seen that and it leads to a dark place, we have no desire to go back to that place. Heck, I was almost in that very position myself! So, did she share with you any intel about what she may have found during that time?”
“No, that woman is like a closed book, if she doesn’t want to you to know something, you can bet your sweet ass that you won’t find out about it. At least not easily, everything with her is like pulling teeth. Why do you ask?” Designation: Hawkeye shifted as much in his seat as he could uncomfortably.
“Some of the things set in motion at just that time may have had a considerable amount of impact to some of the things that still bother us today. We’ll talk more about that later, right not it’s not the most pressing concern. At least, not right at this second it isn’t. She didn’t tell you anything more about what she found; she wants to attempt to clear up how much she knew. We also need to know more about the potential motives of Rogers, after all, we can get any answers until we can question the man himself.” Dacia told the man, having glanced down at her notes.
“What do you mean, what happened to Stark, he was fine when we last saw him. What do you mean? TELL ME WHAT YOU MEAN BY THAT!”
“Oh, nothing but that guy hasn’t woken up yet from whatever your pal, your friend Rogers decided to do to the guy. Right now though I want to ask you more about why you didn’t simply stay retired after Sokovia. What happened to you to make you go against your better judgement. As far as we can tell you didn’t know Maximoff before then, or maybe you did across the field of battle, care to shed a little light on that?”
“I already told you everything you asked, why are you still so fascinated with that girl!?”
“Look, I’ll tell you some of what we suspect about the Witch. We suspect that woman has her powers under better control than she lets on. See, right now we’re concerned that she may have had her hands in your head. After all, you can’t even become a top operator for HYDRA unless you were particularly psychopathic and an expert at using your own unique skill set. So, tell me at what point did you decide that Dr Stark was a bad guy? I’ve got to tell you, that doesn’t seem to add up with some of what we know about how you saw the guy before you decided to retire you seemed to be on good terms. After all, the two of you seemed like you were friends. So what we don’t understand I guess is how you thought of the man changed so drastically?”
“It isn’t something that I can easily put the finger on, but all that I can remember was that after ULTRON I was messed up in the head, I had seen what had become of us. I couldn’t forgive Stark for creating that thing. He had cost that country; he had obliterated a city from the map, how was I supposed to trust him again?”
“Except in your service with S.H.I.E.L.D. and earlier with the army, you had done so much worse, hadn’t you? Not that I’m saying that ULTRON was excusable because it wasn’t, but it wasn’t his fault, not entirely. At least not entirely, there was a whole internal review, and the review and audit found some interesting things. It was also the work of the Scarlet Witch having played with his mind. I have gone through some of the records of that period and found that the man had tried to tell you guys that, but as per usual you didn’t, maybe we can’t blame you, after all, you were supposed to be away from the Avengers.”
“Stark was never hit by Wanda’s powers, she got everyone but the two of us in South Africa, when would she have even found an opening to attack the man?”
“Sokovia and in case you think I’m lying the recordings from the suit told us, but more importantly the numerous inquests of his actions showed this. You see when the man entered the castle he was away from all of you; he left the relative safety of his suit. When he was in there, I can tell you that the suit and JARVIS were able to monitor his brainwaves. What Dr Stark had written off as a vision or another PTSD laden panic attack, but Scarlet Witch had played into his fears. He was given a vision of all of you guys dead, and with his lasts words the supposedly righteous Captain America blamed him.”
“He never told us that, why didn’t he tell us that?”
“I’m just assuming here, but I’m going to guess that he knew that you guys wouldn’t have listened to him. You were already dismissive of his panic attacks and when he spoke to you about what he saw on the other side of that wormhole. What reason would he have to believe that you would listen to him about this? He studied the Sceptre fulling intending to send it off to Thor the next day; the ULTRON programme had already been shelved. But when you lot decided that playing with Thor’s hammer was a marvellous idea, ULTRON was in a sense born. During this time, JARVIS, which was Dr Stark’s finest, most encompassing AI, which he also thought of like a mix between his son and butler and modelled after a father figure, was the first casualty. JARVIS was killed trying to stop the ULTRON program from taking over. You never even tried to empathise with the guy, after did you?”
“No, I didn’t, but JARVIS was nothing more than a computer program. Yes, he was good at what he did, but we never saw anything to suggest that the guy thought anything more about that programme, would it even have mattered whether or not we asked him after. The guy was also a closed book; we never knew if he was lying to us or even telling us everything. He could be boasting about some of what useless rubbish his company had managed to do and at the same time could be telling absolutely nothing at all.”
“Okay, well some of your points were exceptionally far off the mark, but I would still like to thank you for talking to me. Another thing we want you to think about is how far you were willing to go to for Scarlet Witch. After all, there’s a lot of people in the world that are pissed off with the Avengers but what about her made you decided to go against the man you had once been? Was she spreading her legs for you? Because newsflash, she is no innocent and has killed a lot of people over her short time on Earth, in particular during her service to HYDRA. An organisation which she joined of her own free will and was already a good operative of before she received the experimentation that allowed her to unlock her powers. Just as a matter of interest, do you recognise me?” Dacia asked politely peering over at the man.
“Not really, have we met?” Designation: Hawkeye looked confused by the sudden change in topic.
“That’s disappointing, we met back when Thor initially crashed down. Maybe you remember me as Darcy Lewis, Dr Foster’s spacy intern?” Dacia prodded for answers, knowing that she would want to take any answers she could get.

5 Reasons You Should Consider Pelvic Floor Therapy
Reason #1 – You’re sitting way too much
Chances are, you’ve been sitting a lot lately. Almost 26% of adults report sitting for more than 8 hours a day.
Not only do we sit to work, but we sit while we commute, we sit while we eat, and we sit while we binge-watch Netflix. And we’ve all been sitting even more than normal the past few months.
All of this sitting wreaks havoc on your muscles, and your pelvic floor suffers the most.
While your pelvic muscles experience atrophy with age—sitting amplifies this problem. And sitting with poor posture, or at a workstation that isn’t optimized ergonomically can make things even worse.
Reason #2 – You wet yourself just a little every time you cough (or you have to look for the bathroom every 5 minutes)
Before I was a pelvic healer, my friends and I would roll our eyes knowingly when we would “pee our pants laughing”.
We’d been told that it was normal after aging or having children to wet yourself a little when you laugh, sneeze, exercise, or cough.
But after 20 years working with over 15,000 women, I can tell you for sure—it’s not necessary to deal with this horrible inconvenience.

Reason #3 – You’re tired of having pelvic pain you can’t shake
Chronic pelvic pain is an $800 million dollar a year business for the United States healthcare system.
So many women experience pelvic pain and their doctors can’t explain why.
A lot of women bounce from doctor to doctor without getting any explanation or relief from their symptoms.
Fortunately, most of these women can find the relief they’re seeking with proper pelvic floor balancing techniques.
They may not, in fact, need to strengthen their pelvic floor per se, but instead find a proper balance and learn how to relax these muscles. I call these types of exercises the “unkegel”.
Unfortunately, most doctors want to prescribe painkillers rather than actually heal the problem.
Reason #4 – You don’t want to have surgery (or an injection) down there!
There are a lot of circumstances that could lead you to (reluctantly) consider these options.
Maybe you’ve been prescribed painkillers for your pelvic problems.
Or perhaps you’ve been through chemotherapy that’s left your entire body weak, your estrogen levels in the dirt, your pelvic floor muscles tired and your vaginal tissues dry and thin.
Or maybe your doctor has suggested injections or surgery as a means of “fixing” your pelvic floor or reversing your prolapse.
But before you consider these dangerous and likely unnecessary procedures, I’d beg you to try something less invasive, like pelvic floor exercises.
I’d also urge you to consider the fact that the FDA has decided that transvaginal mesh surgical implants are no longer a safe treatment for prolapse.
I’ve been saying this for years, since I’ve seen so many women struggle after this surgery and seen many that had to have additional surgery to have it removed.
Is there any woman on the face of the earth who actually *wants* to submit to vaginal injections or surgery down there? Especially when simple, at-home pelvic floor therapy can strengthen these muscles and heal prolapse?
Trust me, I understand why you’d consider these options—I’ve been there myself and I’m so grateful I discovered an alternative.
Reason #5 – Your pelvic problems are ruining your sex life
If you’re feeling like you have to make excuses to avoid being intimate with your partner because of your pelvic issues, you’re not alone.
Studies show that up to 45% of women with urinary incontinence will avoid sex.
Women with pelvic prolapse are less likely to participate in sex and more likely to have sexual dysfunction.

Women’s Fitness: Should It Change with Age?
Generally speaking, the basic Primal Blueprint for fitness and physical activity applies equally to men and women of all ages. Lifting heavy things works in everyone. Sprinting is a fantastic way—for anyone who’s able—to compress workouts and improve training efficiency. Improving one’s aerobic capacity through easy cardio doesn’t discriminate between the sexes. And everyone should walk, hike, garden, and perform as much low level physical activity as possible. These basic foundations—the 30,000 foot view of fitness—don’t really change across age or sex.
But the details do, especially for women.
You see, women are in a unique position. As men age, the hormonal environment degenerates. They still make the same basic hormones in the same proportions, only the absolute numbers decline. As women age, the hormonal environment shifts dramatically. The menopausal ovaries no longer produce enough follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) to regulate estrogen, testosterone, and progesterone, causing the latter hormones to fluctuate in novel ways.
What kind of hormonal changes and physiological developments occur in the aging woman that might affect how best to train?
Atrophied muscle and reduced strength. As estrogen drops, so does muscle function.
More of a “male” body fat distribution. Postmenopausal women tend to gain more belly fat.
Reduced bone mass. The menopausal hormonal environment leads to a reduction in vitamin D synthesis and absorption, lower calcium levels, and reduced bone mass.
Vascular changes. After menopause, arteries become stiffer. Hypertension becomes more likely.
Exercise intolerance. This one’s a real bummer. You know you need to exercise more than ever to stave off some of the side effects of aging, but your aging hormonal environment is making exercise harder to tolerate.
What takeaways are there? How can you counter or mitigate some of these effects?
Exercise Can Improve Body Comp
Exercise becomes more effective at improving body composition after menopause than before. This may be a “benefit” of the more male body fat distribution patterns. After all, men’s body comp tends to respond more quickly to training than women’s.
Get Started Right Away
If you don’t have much experience with exercise, do it immediately. Don’t wait for the negative effects to accrue. Even if you’ve lived a charmed life where not exercising didn’t really impact your ability to function, that could very well change. The earlier into menopause you start training, the better. The negative changes to exercise tolerance, bone density, and muscle function take awhile to develop, and during the early post-menopause period, your ability to train and reap the benefits of that training is pretty similar to your pre-menopause ability.
Just Do Something
The perimenopausal and early menopausal years can be rough going for many women. You just feel off. You’re not sleeping well. Things are, well, different, and you don’t necessarily have a lot of support to make sense of it or adjust to it. Even though research shows that a minimal amount of exercise can have a big effect on weight gain and disease risk after menopause, sleeplessness or fatigue might be telling you not to do it. Well, that’s not going to cut it. Overcome that. There’s no easy way to say this. No tricks. Just make the decision to exercise, do so regularly for at least a couple weeks, and your exercise tolerance will go up, physical activity will be intrinsically rewarding, and everything will start to improve.
Make Sure You Eat Enough Meat, Dairy, and Other Animal Foods
Protein utilization efficiency drops the older you get, so the older you are the more protein you need to get the job done. Even studies that purport to show negative effects from meat consumption find that older adults benefit from increasing meat. Total protein and dairy protein intake also predict muscle mass and bone mass in postmenopausal women. And meat isn’t just about the protein. It’s also about the micronutrients, like iron, copper (found in organ meats), zinc (high in red meat), carnitine (high in red meat), and phosphatidylserine (high in egg yolks, present in Primal Calm)—all of which have been found to improve women’s physical performance when packaged in a convenient supplement.
Go Into Middle Age As Fit As Possible
Good fitness—aerobic capacity, muscle mass, physical strength, mobility—is a reserve against aging-related degeneration. The fitter you are when menopause hits, the more manageable the transition and the slower that degeneration will be over the subsequent decades.
Intensity Is Important
If anything, it’s more critical for the older woman to push the intensity than anyone else. She often has the most to lose in muscle mass and bone strength. Again and again, across study after study in menopausal women, “low-intensity” doesn’t work as well as higher-intensity training. It still works, mind you. But the greater intensity stuff gives extra benefits.
For instance, in a study comparing a low-intensity aerobic/resistance program to a higher-intensity aerobic/resistance program, both improved muscle strength and walking ability, but only the higher-intensity program improved dynamic balance—a major risk factor for falls.
Intensity Is Relative
By “high-intensity,” I’m not suggesting that a 62 year-old woman do high-rep bodyweight front squats or try to do a double bodyweight deadlift (unless she knows what she’s doing), just that she push the envelope ever so slightly. If your inclination is to do rows with 20 pound dumbbells, consider 25 pounders. If air squats are easy, try them with a weight vest. Sprinting doesn’t have to take place on a track; it can happen in a pool, on a tough hike, or on the bike. Things should be tough but doable.
Volume Should Be Moderate
Exercise has a way of brute forcing glucose tolerance by increasing insulin sensitivity and glucose uptake by muscles, so you’ll be better off than the women who don’t exercise at all, but there’s still a limit because menopause tends to inhibit carbohydrate metabolism and glucose tolerance. High volumes of training, especially if you’re heeding the previous advice to increase the intensity, demand a level of carbohydrate intake that your body probably isn’t prepared to handle.
Lift Heavy Things Twice a Week
You could do more, but I don’t think it’s necessary. Lifting (relatively) heavy weights provides the necessary stimulus to maintain bone density and muscle strength. Movements that engage the whole body, like deadlifts and farmer carries, will be most effective and efficient. These exercises replicate real world movements, like picking up grandkids or carrying grocery bags, that you need to perform. If you’re uncomfortable with these movements, find a good trainer.
Walk a Ton
Walking is magic for everyone, but especially post-menopausal women, for whom a three-day-a-week walking habit improves resistance to heart failure. Join a walking group. Better yet, start one in your circle of friends. Be the example, the leader. No one else will. And set a brisk pace when you do walk. The brisker, the better.
Always Choose the Stairs
Stair climbing itself is a great form of exercise for post-menopausal women, improving leg strength and endothelial function. As a mindset, “taking the stairs” is even more valuable. It’s doing the hard thing. It’s parking in the far lot and walking a quarter mile. It’s carrying your own bags. It’s a mindset to embody: “I’m strong enough, capable enough, and tough enough to take the stairs while people half my age use the elevator to go one floor.”
Compare Yourself To Who You Were Two Weeks Ago, Not the 20-Year-Olds At the Gym
The trend is everything. If you’re getting better, that’s what matters. You are not other people. We all have different situations, capacities, genetic histories, and hormonal profiles. Focus on beating your former self, even if only by a couple pounds lifted or seconds shaved from a sprint time—and nothing else.
Look Into Hormone Replacement Therapy
Since estrogen plays such a key role in women’s physiological function, many studies find exercise to be more beneficial in postmenopausal women who take HRT than in postmenopausal women who do not. It’s a highly personal choice, but I’ll have more on this topic in the future.
Aging women aren’t a different species. Menopause doesn’t really change how you should train in a fundamental way. There aren’t any magical menopause-specific exercises. It just makes certain types of training—and exercise in general—that much more important for health and overall function. You could “get away” with not training much before (not really, but you can fool yourself). Now you can’t. Now you have to exercise and move on a regular basis if you want to maintain functional capacity, take care of yourself, and stick around to enjoy your loved ones.

Exercise intolerance. This one’s a real bummer. You know you need to exercise more than ever to stave off some of the side effects of aging, but your aging hormonal environment is making exercise harder to tolerate.
What takeaways are there? How can you counter or mitigate some of these effects?
Exercise Can Improve Body Comp
Exercise becomes more effective at improving body composition after menopause than before. This may be a “benefit” of the more male body fat distribution patterns. After all, men’s body comp tends to respond more quickly to training than women’s.
Get Started Right Away
If you don’t have much experience with exercise, do it immediately. Don’t wait for the negative effects to accrue. Even if you’ve lived a charmed life where not exercising didn’t really impact your ability to function, that could very well change. The earlier into menopause you start training, the better. The negative changes to exercise tolerance, bone density, and muscle function take awhile to develop, and during the early post-menopause period, your ability to train and reap the benefits of that training is pretty similar to your pre-menopause ability.
Just Do Something
The perimenopausal and early menopausal years can be rough going for many women. You just feel off. You’re not sleeping well. Things are, well, different, and you don’t necessarily have a lot of support to make sense of it or adjust to it. Even though research shows that a minimal amount of exercise can have a big effect on weight gain and disease risk after menopause, sleeplessness or fatigue might be telling you not to do it. Well, that’s not going to cut it. Overcome that. There’s no easy way to say this. No tricks. Just make the decision to exercise, do so regularly for at least a couple weeks, and your exercise tolerance will go up, physical activity will be intrinsically rewarding, and everything will start to improve.
Make Sure You Eat Enough Meat, Dairy, and Other Animal Foods
Protein utilization efficiency drops the older you get, so the older you are the more protein you need to get the job done. Even studies that purport to show negative effects from meat consumption find that older adults benefit from increasing meat. Total protein and dairy protein intake also predict muscle mass and bone mass in postmenopausal women. And meat isn’t just about the protein. It’s also about the micronutrients, like iron, copper (found in organ meats), zinc (high in red meat), carnitine (high in red meat), and phosphatidylserine (high in egg yolks, present in Primal Calm)—all of which have been found to improve women’s physical performance when packaged in a convenient supplement.
Go Into Middle Age As Fit As Possible
Good fitness—aerobic capacity, muscle mass, physical strength, mobility—is a reserve against aging-related degeneration. The fitter you are when menopause hits, the more manageable the transition and the slower that degeneration will be over the subsequent decades.
Intensity Is Important
If anything, it’s more critical for the older woman to push the intensity than anyone else. She often has the most to lose in muscle mass and bone strength. Again and again, across study after study in menopausal women, “low-intensity” doesn’t work as well as higher-intensity training. It still works, mind you. But the greater intensity stuff gives extra benefits.
For instance, in a study comparing a low-intensity aerobic/resistance program to a higher-intensity aerobic/resistance program, both improved muscle strength and walking ability, but only the higher-intensity program improved dynamic balance—a major risk factor for falls.
Intensity Is Relative
By “high-intensity,” I’m not suggesting that a 62 year-old woman do high-rep bodyweight front squats or try to do a double bodyweight deadlift (unless she knows what she’s doing), just that she push the envelope ever so slightly. If your inclination is to do rows with 20 pound dumbbells, consider 25 pounders. If air squats are easy, try them with a weight vest. Sprinting doesn’t have to take place on a track; it can happen in a pool, on a tough hike, or on the bike. Things should be tough but doable.
Volume Should Be Moderate
Exercise has a way of brute forcing glucose tolerance by increasing insulin sensitivity and glucose uptake by muscles, so you’ll be better off than the women who don’t exercise at all, but there’s still a limit because menopause tends to inhibit carbohydrate metabolism and glucose tolerance. High volumes of training, especially if you’re heeding the previous advice to increase the intensity, demand a level of carbohydrate intake that your body probably isn’t prepared to handle.
Lift Heavy Things Twice a Week
You could do more, but I don’t think it’s necessary. Lifting (relatively) heavy weights provides the necessary stimulus to maintain bone density and muscle strength. Movements that engage the whole body, like deadlifts and farmer carries, will be most effective and efficient. These exercises replicate real world movements, like picking up grandkids or carrying grocery bags, that you need to perform. If you’re uncomfortable with these movements, find a good trainer.
Walk a Ton
Walking is magic for everyone, but especially post-menopausal women, for whom a three-day-a-week walking habit improves resistance to heart failure. Join a walking group. Better yet, start one in your circle of friends. Be the example, the leader. No one else will. And set a brisk pace when you do walk. The brisker, the better.
Always Choose the Stairs
Stair climbing itself is a great form of exercise for post-menopausal women, improving leg strength and endothelial function. As a mindset, “taking the stairs” is even more valuable. It’s doing the hard thing. It’s parking in the far lot and walking a quarter mile. It’s carrying your own bags. It’s a mindset to embody: “I’m strong enough, capable enough, and tough enough to take the stairs while people half my age use the elevator to go one floor.”
Compare Yourself To Who You Were Two Weeks Ago, Not the 20-Year-Olds At the Gym
The trend is everything. If you’re getting better, that’s what matters. You are not other people. We all have different situations, capacities, genetic histories, and hormonal profiles. Focus on beating your former self, even if only by a couple pounds lifted or seconds shaved from a sprint time—and nothing else.
Look Into Hormone Replacement Therapy
Since estrogen plays such a key role in women’s physiological function, many studies find exercise to be more beneficial in postmenopausal women who take HRT than in postmenopausal women who do not. It’s a highly personal choice, but I’ll have more on this topic in the future.
Aging women aren’t a different species. Menopause doesn’t really change how you should train in a fundamental way. There aren’t any magical menopause-specific exercises. It just makes certain types of training—and exercise in general—that much more important for health and overall function. You could “get away” with not training much before (not really, but you can fool yourself). Now you can’t. Now you have to exercise and move on a regular basis if you want to maintain functional capacity, take care of yourself, and stick around to enjoy your loved ones.

When Your Doctor Prescribes A Vibrator For Your Aging Vagina
Doctors have been adding a new tool to the arsenal of how they restore the sex lives of menopausal and post-menopausal women: the humble vibrator.
With the onset of menopause, a decrease in the production of hormones causes vaginal tissue to get thinner and drier. Vaginal muscles can also atrophy, leading to painful sex ― a problem for half of all menopausal and post-menopausal women, according to the National Institutes of Health. But the solution might be as simple as a vibrating piece of silicon.
Vibrators that are used internally stimulate pelvic blood flow, which increases vaginal moisture and boosts sexual response, all of which makes sex (with or without a partner) better. Like any muscle, the vagina is best kept healthy with regular exercise — it’s the “use it or lose it” thing. Deterioration of this muscle becomes more common as middle-age or older women find themselves in situations where they aren’t sexually active anymore ― single, divorced, widowed or just not having regular sex with partners.
Therapeutically speaking, frequent vibrator use can prevent and ward off conditions such as painful vaginal dryness and atrophy. And yes, doctors are recommending their use ― with the caveat that since the vibrator industry isn’t regulated, certain cautionary steps should be taken. (In brief: Keep anything you put inside your privates clean, and don’t share your toys with friends.)
Dr. Barb DePree, who’s been a gynecologist for about 30 years and was recognized by the North American Menopause Society in 2013 as the practitioner of the year for her “exceptional contributions” to menopause care, has long been prescribing vibrators to her patients. She keeps one handy in the exam room when she explains to her menopausal patients why regular vibrator use will be beneficial to their health, and suggests they try it.
While a few patients might have blushed through the years, all of them have been willing to take it for a spin, DePress told HuffPost. She explains that vibrators that stimulate just the clitoris might be fun, but for intercourse with a partner to resume pain-free, there must be pelvic floor activity.
One of her patients is a 70-year-old woman who reports having sex two or three times a week now without the use of lubricants or estrogen creams. She doesn’t always achieve an orgasm, but according to her doctor, is quite pleased with what working with a vibrator for a few months accomplished.
DePree draws this analogy: “When your vision started to fail, you didn’t give up reading. You went out and bought yourself a pair of readers. Same thing is true about sex.”
A survey of more than 2,000 women aged 18 to 60 indicated that 52 percent have used a vibrator.
Another benefit of vibrator use, said DePree, is they can help address the fact that orgasm intensity weakens with age. She said she commonly hears women say, “Orgasm takes so much longer, and comes and goes so quickly it’s hardly worth it.” She said, “Those are the women who may benefit from introducing a vibrator too.”
In a published paper she authored, DePree discussed a 52-year-old post-menopausal patient who sought her help. The woman estimated that at least five years had passed since she last experienced an orgasm. The patient had multiple sclerosis and was taking a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor. She had tried a vibrator in the past, without success.
“As a physician, I knew that she needed a more powerful motor for more intense stimulation. I was able to let her feel the difference and obtain the appropriate vibrator. Imagine her appreciation when she returned after achieving success,” DePree said.
Having vibrators to road test in the safety of a doctor’s office also seems to be a boon. Not every woman feels comfortable going into a sex toy shop for the purchase. Online, the choices are mind-boggling. There are hundreds to choose form, and they can range in price from under $10 to the super-deluxe MotorBunny for $900 and the even higher priced Sybian.
Dr. Mary Jane Minkin, a Yale University obstetrician and gynecologist, brought vibrators out from under the bed a few years ago when she began prescribing them to Yale Cancer Clinic’s cancer patients, who often struggle with early menopause and need to combat its side effects. The vibrators increased her patients’ blood flow, and yes, improved their sex lives.
While the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the primary professional organization for ob-gyns, doesn’t have an official policy on using vibrators to treat menopause and post-menopausal symptoms, a spokeswoman from the group told HuffPost that the organization doesn’t really take issue with it.
And the organization does recommend masturbation to combat painful sex. “I believe you could extrapolate that external stimulus, like a vibrator, fits into those categories,” said Maggie McEvoy of the ACOG communications staff.
Vibrators not your thing?
There are, of course, other options to help restore the vagina’s elasticity and health for those who are unable or unwilling to go the vibrator route.
Hormone replacement therapy is controversial, but still on the table. Its use to treat symptoms of menopause changed abruptly after a large clinical trial in the U.K. found that the treatment actually posed more health risks, like breast cancer, than benefits for one type of hormone therapy.
But further review of clinical trials and new evidence show that hormone therapy may be a good choice for certain women, depending on their risk factors. Low-dose vaginal preparations of estrogen — which come in cream, tablet or ring form ― can effectively treat vaginal symptoms and some urinary symptoms, while minimizing absorption into the body, says the Mayo Clinic.
There are also vaginal lasers, a relatively new FDA-approved treatment, that work by stimulating collagen production along vaginal walls, helping to build up the tissue again. The MonaLisa Touch and similar laser processes require three treatments (spaced a month apart) and cost about $3,000 that likely won’t be covered by your insurance.
On the plus side, there have been 18 studies that speak to the MonaLisa Touch’s efficacy, all largely positive. One Stanford university study of 30 women found that all of them responded positively to the treatment. They showed “highly statistically significant improvement” in symptoms —including dryness, pain, itching, painful urination and painful intercourse — after the first treatment.
The North American Menopause Society gives the process a resounding “maybe.” It notes that the FDA approval process for devices is less strenuous than the one for new drugs, and these products haven’t survived the test of time ― yet. Meaning: They haven’t been around long enough to know the longer-term results.
The procedure itself doesn’t hurt, but does require an annual maintenance treatment. You also shouldn’t have laser therapy until you’ve had a Pap test and a thorough exam by your doctor to ensure that there are no other medical issues such as fibroids causing the pain.
Options are a good thing, right?
