a/n: i hope it’s okay that i combined these requests! and i know the requests said fem reader, but there’s not really any indication of gender anywhere so i hope that’s alright!

You screamed loudly, jumping from the shock. The popcorn in the bowl you were holding now covered both you and Kirby. Freddy Krueger had just killed yet another person, but you kept getting scared every single time. Only now, your jumpiness just cost you your popcorn.

“Y/n! You are not allowed to hold the popcorn during a horror movie anymore!” Kirby said, grabbing the bowl from your grip in an attempt to salvage the little bit left in the bowl.

“It’s not my fault! I’m just jumpy. I mean, can you blame me?” you replied, grimacing at your own words.

“You mean the murders?” Kirby asked, no longer laughing at you.

“Just forget it. Let’s go back to the movie.”

You turned your attention back to the screen, only to be interrupted by Kirby’s house phone ringing. Groaning, she got up and walked over to answer it.

“Hello?” she said, annoyance in her voice.

“Enjoying your movie?” a distorted voice answered.

“Trevor? Is this you? Jill’s not here so go be obsessive somewhere else.”

“What are you watching, Kirby?”

“Nightmare on Elm Street. Why do you care? I already told you that Jill isn’t here.”

“That movie’s kinda scary, don’t you think? Are you sure you can handle it?”

“Bye Trevor!” Kirby said, hanging up the phone.

She walked back over to the couch and plopped down next to you, turning her attention back towards the movie.

“What did Trevor want this time?” you asked.

“He was weird. Just wanted to know what we were watching. Didn’t even say anything about Jill.”

“Are you sure it was him?”

“His voice sounded the same as it did last time he called. All weird and distorted.”

“He needs to get over Jill already. She’s moved on. And I am so much better than he is.”

Kirby laughed, falling silent afterwards to continue watching the movie. A few minutes later, you were watching from behind your hands, wanting to block out the gore on the screen in front of you. You usually could tolerate horror movies, but with everything happening recently you could barely stand the sight of them. The only reason you even agreed to watch the stupid movie in the first place was because it had been forever since you had hung out with Kirby. Hanging out with one of your best friends was worth suffering through a horror movie.

You heard a ringing, and practically jumped three feet in the air, only to realize it was just your phone.

“It’s Jill, can you pause real quick?”

“Yeah sure,” Kirby said, reaching for the remote to stop the movie.

“Hello?” you said, answering your phone.

“Hey babe, enjoying your movie?” Jill replied.

“How’d you know we were watching a movie?” you asked, slightly alarmed.

“I can hear it in the background,” Jill blurted out.

“No you can’t. It’s paused.”

“Oh, right! What I meant was, you told me earlier today that you were going over to Kirby’s to watch a horror movie. Remember?”

“I never said that. I just told you we were hanging out. I never mentioned a movie. Jill, what’s going on?”

“Nothing, I must be getting mixed up. I mean with everything going on lately, it’s a mess.”

“You’re not answering me Jill. How did you know we were watching a horror movie?”

“Uhm, I- uhm,” Jill stuttered.

Before you could say anything in reply, a crash sounded from upstairs. You and Kirby froze and looked at each other. No one else was home. At the same time the crash sounded, you heard a very similar noise coming from the other end of the phone call.

“Jill? Are you here?” you asked. Before you could get an answer, Jill hung up on you.

“Y/n? What’s happening?” Kirby asked, looking about as terrified as you were.

Even if it wasn’t Jill, someone was definitely in the house. But the more you thought about it, the more things started adding up. Kirby always getting random calls whenever the two of you hung out without Jill. Jill’s repeated survival from the killer. And now all of this. You felt your heart race as your mind came to the conclusion. Jill was Ghostface. She had to be. It all made sense now.

“We have to get out of here, right now,” you said, pulling Kirby off the couch and heading towards the door.

“What’s going on?”

“Look, I’ll explain when we’re somewhere safe, but right now we just have to-”

“Going somewhere?” Jill said, appearing at the bottom of the stairs.

“What are you doing here?” you asked, staring at your girlfriend with fear in your eyes.

“What’s it look like I’m doing? I just wanted to join in on movie night. Is that so bad? You know I don’t like it when you hang out with other girls.”

“I know, Jill. I know what you’ve done. You thought you could hide it from me, but you slipped up. How could you Jill?”

“Well, it was quite easy actually. I had to find someone good at following instructions, Charlie, and then get him to do all the dirty work. I just had to star in it.”

“You’re crazy! Come on, let’s get outta here!” Kirby shouted, turning to run out the back door, pulling you along with her.

Jill pulled out a gun and shot Kirby before she could get away, and turned to point the gun at you.

“You weren’t supposed to find out this way. Well, actually you weren’t supposed to find out at all. But, now you know! So, the question is, what are we going to do about that?” Jill said, walking closer to you.

You tried to back away, tripping slightly on Kirby’s body, before you walked into the counter. Jill had you cornered. You tried to reach for a knife, but it was no use. They were too far away, and you had nowhere left to go.

“You have a few choices here, babe. One, you try to fight me and end up with a bullet in your head. Two, you try to trick me into trusting you, slip up, and end up with a bullet in your head. Or three, you stop fighting, and join me and Charlie, and you don’t end up with a bullet in your head.”

You looked into Jill’s eyes, seeing nothing there. The love and light behind her eyes were gone, replaced with complete darkness. This wasn’t the girl you fell in love with. The girl standing in front of you was someone else entirely.

“So, what do you say? Are you with me or not?”

Composite Images

Using the object select tool, this is the total selected object of the man. There are some obvious rough edges with the selection where he blended in with the background, such as his top arm which is partially cut off and around his hair which will be very difficult and time-consuming to fix. On the edges where the mistakes are more obvious like the piece jutting out from his leg, we can use the path tool to create an outline with bezier curves and then convert it to a selection to clear these parts.

With the hair, it is essential to make a layer mask in order to brush away the parts of the image that are still showing and to restore some of the parts of the hair which the object select cut out at the start. Using the square bracket keys to adjust the size of the brush and adjusting the hardness in order to get some of the finer edges. Although the process takes a long time, it does make for lots of accuracy and editing onto the layer mask instead of directly onto the image gives the ability to reverse mistakes and bring back parts of the image which might have accidentally been erased. Switching between the black and white layer mask view, the view of just the man on the green background, and an overlay layer which shows the entire original image, allows for us to see parts of the hair we missed, and can serve as a guide to show what we should be brushing.

Final product. Against the bright green background we can see the parts of the image that are slightly transparent around the edge of the hair, giving the impression of strands of hair. Although some strands of the hair look a little rough, once the image is on a detailed background it will not be noticeable.

In the layers tab, we can see that there are two copies of the snake, one above layer of the jumping man, and one behind it. By doing this, and creating a layer mask on the top layer, we are able to use the brush to paint away parts of the top layer to reveal the man underneath. This way, it gives the appearance of the man being behind parts of the snake shape and above other parts of it.

Because we implemented the snake shape as a linked smart object, when we update and edit the snake in illustrator and save it, it updates the appearance of the snake to match in photoshop. We edited the snake to make it more detailed and have a much more stylistic and appealing appearance. Because it is embedded, the only think we need to do is to edit the top layer mask and widen the transparent sections to show the parts of the man that were previously hidden.

Homework Additions:

In total, all of the additions made accounted for all of the new layers shown above. Toby mentioned something about bowling in class, so I decided to take the idea of bowling and make a scene out of it. To me, the snake looked a bit like a backwards S, which I figured could stand for strike or something similar. This gave me the idea to flip the current composition, which gave the impression of the jumping man looking like he was throwing something over his shoulder. This something in my mind could only be a bowling ball. I created a bowling ball vector in illustrator and embedded it into the photoshop composition. Same idea with the bowling pin which was the next addition. That covered the two vectors required for the homework, so I decided to start adding some pixel images to supplement the scene. I started with the flame behind the bowling ball, which should hopefully give the impression that this man is a god-like bowler. The flames gave somewhat of an evil look to the picture, so I figured there should be someone in the composition to reflect this atmosphere of fear. I added the business man to the image and used the object select tool with some slight additions from the polygonal lasso tool to remove his background, and gave him a shadow using an imbedded illustrator vector. The man needed some slight curve and saturation adjustment in order to get his lighting a little more similar to the other mans. The next edition was the classic wii bowling "Strike!" banner, which I had to also remove the background on. For this I used the colour range selection option to grab the white background which the word was on and touched it up with just the rectangle marquee tool to add or remove some pixels which the colour range select had missed. The next addition was the dotted line, which I created using the pen tool and the stroke edit window which has a "dotted line" feature which could be useful in the future. Finally it was the background image which I found online, although it was in a much more widescreen aspect ration than what would fit the photoshop outline. Because of this, I had to add a section at the top of the image using a selection and a colour-picked fill. I then used the smudge tool to drag the lighting from at the top of the image upwards over colour filled area, and then blurred the area to make it blend a little better. The original image also had a blue bowling ball going down the right side of the middle lane which I had to remove by copying a section of the left side of the lane, flipping it, and covering up the ball. It ended up a little rough but the imperfections happened to be hidden by the S and jumping feller so I didn't worry about it too much.

In reflection, although the image obviously doesn't look professional or even remotely realistic, I had a good time creating it and actually feel like I learnt a lot. Because of the scattered nature of the composition, it gave me lots of chances to try different things and experiment, all of which taught me new things about both photoshop and illustrator.

Genre shift AU: Space Opera; Space Western; Western; -I love Firefly and Cowboy Bebop and grew up on cowboy westerns. I’d love to see AVALANCHE in that sort of setting. Whether they are bounty hunters, smugglers, mercenaries, cowboys, ranchers, or running a saloon, that is up to you. The Highwind and Shera would make wonderful spaceships. Feel free to swap horses and chocobos, have both, or swap chocobos and cattle if you like. -Shinra is a great antagonist. From corrupt company or government to President Shinra just being a greedy A-hole making their lives difficult. Feel free to use the SOLDIERs, Turks, or Hojo as additional antagonists here.

Animal shape-shifter AU: Go big and flashy or small and mundane. One character as the shape-shifter or everyone. Have them keep it a secret or something everyone knows about/can do.

Wing AU: Cloud with wings. One wing? A pair? Many? What color or style? Why does he have them? Is he still freaking out, resigned or are they normal for him? Do other people have them? Set in canon or AU. Just want a story with wings.

Mer AU: I really like the idea of there being different types of mer (reef, open ocean, abyssal, fresh water, etc,) as well as a mer’s appearance taking after real fish and other aquatic animals. Not that interested in seeing mer/human interactions, more what is life like in the water.

Cloud is a Selkie: Someone finds Cloud on the shore of the cold, wild sea. Maybe he’s injured, maybe he’s lost his seal skin, maybe something else happened. Whatever it is, it prevents Cloud from flipping them off and going back to the sea immediately.

Monster & Fall or Winter holiday AU: Either the cast are monsters or they live in a world with monsters. Looking for creatures and inspiration from Scandinavian, Nordic and Germanic folklore. Denzel and/or Marlene are the time travelers without any adults. The kids meeting mama Strife. - Buster Sword legacy fic with Cloud and/or Zack as the time traveler/s. Having the fusion swords and the future buster sword with him/them would be cool, as well as Angeal’s reaction to an upgraded buster sword. Angeal & Genesis being called out on their actions in Crisis Core.

My publication captures each character looking shifty, or otherwise creepy. Getting the balance between a comedic picture and a satirical-but-still-stylised was very important to every shoot. I think this line could have perhaps been better tread in the headshot shoot – where even though lots of effort was put into styling selections – it could have been perhaps elevated to the level of fashion more effectively. Having said this, as images I do think they are very effective and have the satirical effect that I really wanted.

The collages (which are my favourite method of illustration and feature throughout my body of work) were produced from the mindset of some of my politicians. They attempt to complement their imagery and polices, and visually make manifest their words.

I think the world is getting scarier, with ‘men of the people’ either being scripted to the absolute hilt, informed by the latest (illegally?) attained public data or saying abhorrent things that have poisoned the discourse. ‘Telling it like it is’ mostly now seems to mean identifying scapegoats, attacking them and standing up for the ‘traditional working class’ (a dogwhistle for *white* working class), all with either a pint or a golf club in hand. Because this ‘honesty’ is poisonous and negative rather than constructive, I think it is important to not meet this with further negativity. This is often the reaction of well meaning people, but it creates tribes. Further, compassion is so important and I think in some respects necessary here. But validation of this movement is incredibly dangerous. This is why I have, therefore, decided to meet it with humour. To make these powerful figures look less powerful. I focused on distinct tropes, and each shoot was a response to these: ‘conservative women are the most beautiful’, climate change denial, a strong popular leader, pulling yourself up by the bootstraps and paranoid health concerns.

This is a publication for people who despair at our current political climate – people like me. Although this could be seen as ‘preaching to the choir’, I think it is important for people who want to fight the far right to feel empowered – less alone. This, in turn empowers the movement. And a movement, to be truly pervasive, should ideally come from all spheres. Maybe fashion is not the first thing you would think of, but fashion should be motivated by contemporary issues. And for me, this is the greatest, along with climate change. I feel like if you feel a gap for something, if you feel like the way you feel is not being represented, then there are at least a few people who feel the same, and as this is a global movement, and the zine does not focus heavily on one particular nation, it could appeal throughout the western world. The words from this publication are a new idea for me – normally I would include poetry and interviews – but in this circumstance, they come directly from the politicians themselves. To get a real feel for how these people think, I pored over Infowars.com, Alex Jones clips on YouTube, Dave Rubin gaffes (he genuinely wants to scrap building codes because he believes the market would ensure safe builds – NOT SURE THAT WORKS ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD…), Katie Hopkins, Sargon of Akkad, Stephen Yaxley Lennon, Breitbart and Dennis Prager etc. Among other things, I begun to realise just how depressing this worldview is. I can see this publication on the shelves flanked perhaps by Adbusters and Eye on Design’s latest issue. The are both motivated by external political stimuli, which they respond to in an urgent, but lighthearted way. With more of a focus on fashion, rather than art (although I produced a lot of collages), I think this justifies the gap being left between them on the shelf for The Sovereign Advancement League. The target audience is the same – creative, liberal individuals who are politically motivated – from around 17-40. My unique selling point is the concept as it pairs with fashion. As hard as I looked, I couldn’t find anything similar, but really feel there is a need for it.

This zine will be sold over the internet (find at ellieedis.com/sovereign-advancement-league) at £20 (each costs £10 to print). I would like to make this a series of issues – either continuing with the same group of fake politicians, or with a different group each time focusing on the most pertinent issue of the day – perhaps a whole issue of climate-change-denial. It will be in print each time because, while I think online is a great space to promote, I think it is more likely that people will come across the issue by chance, and feel more of a connection with it in person.

I took all images myself apart from the headshot shoot and the picture that I feature in. The first was shot by Declan Creffield, an amazing professional portrait photo who I was able to collaborate with because I offered to model for him for free. He was great to work with and he really understood the kind of awkward feel I wanted. The second mentioned was a collaboration shoot between me, Lauren Davey (an illustration student) and Simi Kanda (a photography student). We got together to take some fairly simple shots (alternating photography/creative direction ideas) and then went on to edit them however we wanted. Lauren did all of the makeup, and I did the styling. As with most of my work, each shoot was very different from the other, but with a common thread. I like to do this because it keeps it interesting as you go through the zine. I kept the colour scheme (deep red, blue and cream/gold) throughout, to maintain cohesiveness. A lot of these shoots are innovative mainly through post-production, editing faces slightly to carry a sense of evil/awkwardness, changing colours or adding a sense of retro kitsch fantasy by changing the background altogether, as in the final collaboration shoot.

The stylisation of the shoots references a lot of 70s/80s, but the zine is hopefully self-aware enough to modernise these concepts. Further to that, these eras are back in a big way, evidenced by the famous Balenciaga A/W18 campaign shot by Robbie Ausberger. I mainly used lightroom and photoshop to achieve the effects I did.

When it comes to evaluation, as always happens with projects, there were a lot of hurdles to overcome, particularly the headshot shoot, where it was vital that I had at least 7 models showed up on the same day, at the same time. Three models I had planned all messaged last minute to say they couldn’t make it, so sourcing three people who were right for the shoot on the same day it was happening was stressful. Despite this, I actually think that it turned out for the best, and that the models who were able to do it in the end were actually even better for the party. This is the kind of thing you expect when you are asking people for favours, and you have to account for it. I do normally have shoots with two models and shoot them both, so that if one pulls out I can definitely shoot that day, but having backups for 7 people was a lot! I also got my publication printed too early, and noticed certain issues and so had to rejig it and print again. This was tough on finances, but was important to the final outcome. I have learned to be more persuasive and to double and triple check things before I send them off for print.

I am happy and proud of what I produced. I think if I were to do the project again, I might perhaps somehow focus more on the fashion element. I styled everything down to small details, but I think the images could look slightly more editorial (in a fashion communication context). I also produced a short promotional film (also viewable at ellieedis.com/sovereign-advancement-league). I am proud that I managed to turn a political issue I care about deeply into a fully realised, stylised project. The photographer I collaborated with is the most professional I have thus far, and I believe the models are also more relevant to my project than they have been in the past. I pushed myself in this module despite a few hurdles, and I hope it shows.
