In which I break down the table talk scene between Zoe & Her Mom
Zoe and her mom were not close when she was growing up. They had the sort of relationship where Devika would tell Zoe to do one thing, and she does the polar opposite of what she requested. Although loving, Devika was strict whereas Sanjeev was stern, but hands off. Because Sanjeev wasn’t inclined to scold Zoe to the same degree Devika would, Zoe preferred her dad. The relationship between Zoe and Devika shifts when Zoe is pregnant with Rohan. Devika stops treating Zoe as less of a womanchild and sees her more as an adult. Therefore, they begin bonding and understanding each other. Zoe also holds empathy and support for her mother when Devika announces that Sanjeev committed adultery.
She had this fantasy in her head that her mom would divorce him, move to Chestnut Ridge, find a new lover and she would essentially be liberated!
This didn’t happen.
Devika and Sanjeev prolonged going through the divorce process, went to couple’s counseling, and now they’re ‘happy’ together. Devika wants to move past it, doesn’t want to talk about that moment in her life, and Zoe hates this.
Zoe wonders what would she do if Michael cheated on her? Would she be passive about it like her mom? Believe in what her mother referred to as, 'healing'? How much like her mother will she become as she gets older?
So, needless to say, even though Zoe and her mother have a fine relationship now there’s still parts of her that she resents. And frankly, her worst fear is being her mom.
