tomorrow's hero & yesterday's knight.
"Hurry along now, I don't have all day!"
They had left the old home once again, now trekking along in the wilderness that lurked behind the old man's home. It'd almost become a routine that every so often, Kurosaki would pack a simple dinner for when the silver-haired child would return to him and they would go out into the world together. The boy had become something like family to him, his parents long since left this world and his sisters had years ago uprooted themselves and now took to families of their own. Keeping contact with them was hard, and having the younger tag along with him, he'd grown attached to the company over the passing years.
It had been bittersweet at the very beginning, having not seen such a face in quite a long while, the memory had almost become blurred until it all came crashing back in vibrant clarity. Shock, followed by a soft rise of joy, then crushed by a wave of grief and guilt had battered his old bones and mind all at once at the sight of the younger's curved wisps of silver hair and thin lips stretched over pale features. Never in all his days had he seen such a striking resemblance, and though he liked to think it was just a coincidence, the war veteran knew better than that. The presence felt like him, and there was no denying that this child was the man who had long ago handed him the torch, so as to carry on for the both of them.
It wasn't until years later had the elder learned the full story of his predecessor, and upon his new understanding, he had mourned and held himself responsible. If only he had been strong enough, then-- he should have saved that man then, and he had made the ultimate sacrifice of his life for those he cared for. Kurosaki had spent his youth fighting for those he loved, but he could not scrap the surface of the genuine strength and sacrifices that man had made. He had died in vain, and the boy was left to mourn him in silence and years after his passing; he had deserved so much more, so much more respect and pleasant words of remembrance.
It was in those long, pained years that in his youth he took to carefully learning calligraphy and it's finer workings, so as to honor the fallen soldier that had silently put his faith into the boy he once was. Those lessons lead to the careful, tentative painting of the man's name, along with the 'God slaying spear' he adorned in battle. They were framed in the finest, most beautiful reddened frames he could find and they were hung with care within his room. It was the only way he knew how to give them the respect he owed, for they had opened the door to him and it was they who fought for him, and he had let them down. The painted names were kept within his view of his private room, so as each passing morning he would be reminded of their sacrifice, and each morning incense would be lit for them and flowers would be places in a tall, pale vase.
Still, in his old age, he persisted in doing so. Even if his bones ached, he would pick the flowers himself and he would nod to the framed writings, for they were all he had of his predecessor. That is, until this boy had come into his life. He'd nearly dropped what he held in his hands in shock, but fate was kind to him and he had taken the child under his wing, now much like a son to him. Words could not express how happy and proud he was, all at once. Ichimaru had been given a second chance, and this time, Kurosaki made a silent promise to guide the boy and he would open up the world for him with a tender hand, just as a similar man had done for him all those years ago. He would not let the boy wander astray, because they had been far too similar and the elder understood this; oh so easily, they could have been in opposite places and this time, he would give the young, silver-haired child his right to be the hero he was destined to be.
"Come on now, Gin, you don't want it to get cold, do you?" gentle rumble of a gruff voice broke the silence that had fallen in the spring breeze, trees and the like rustling underneath his voice. A calloused palm patted the spot to his side, his other palm bringing a cup to his lips as he sipped the lemonade he had made for the pair of them. These afternoons were his favorites, with the breeze rolling gently and the sweet undertone of garden flowers lulling to his senses, sun hanging high and enveloping his old, scarred skin with a tender embrace of warmth.
If only he could lock these days away in his pocket and save them forever, if only.

[ a place of skulls and snakes ]
One did not simply live in Hueco Mundo without being aware of the grand palace that rose from the white desert and displayed its grandeur for miles. But just being aware of it didn't mean being directly involved with it, which Corevon was not. In fact, he had never even gotten close to it -- he only gazed upon the pillars and domes on the horizon from atop the towering rock formations that split the landscape. He had no reason to actually go there. However, after how many months of observation, he was beginning to be more interested in the "party" he had so surely missed.
Not that he was bitter about never being invited in the first place. He lived so far away, beyond a great expanse of sand that looked all the same, that it was unreasonable to think these new inhabitants of Las Noches would even be aware of him.
He knew of only one name: Aizen. That was who now ruled this barren land, but Corevon felt no sense of allegiance or affiliation with him. Had never even seen the man. The concerns of this conqueror were not his own. Corevon chose to stay away from the squabbles between Hollows and Shinigami. Anything to increase his own longevity.
Well... usually he stayed away. Today was different. Today he strode close enough to the palace that he had to look up to see the top of the main structure. Of course he was cautious, terribly cautious, but for once his curiosity had gotten the better of him. He hadn't planned on lingering, but it so happened that chance dealt him a joker.
