I actually do have an answer to your mental game--either EgyptAir Flight 990 or SilkAir Flight 185. The investigations for both are controversial, but the most commonly agreed-upon cause is "the plane went nose-down because of intentional pilot control inputs" in both cases.

30 years of excellence vs. survival
Singapore airlines is one of the most iconic airlines in the world. The first time I flew internationally was in Singapore Airlines because of the brand that the company had created in my home country, India. They are known for their superior customer service, unmatched efficiency and high value for money, despite being more expensive than many other airlines in the industry.
The case highlights the lengths that the company has gone through to maintain its customer services over decades. The challenge in September 2001 that executives are facing: giving up on spacebeds, reducing customer service, and cutting down on costs. This feels like an impossible decision. On one side, there is little to no government support, huge debt, and market uncertainty. On the other hand, is the brand equity that has take decades to cultivate but can be lost in a moment. I personally believe that SIA should seek additional support from Temasek and other investors to bolster their balance sheet temporarily, if needed, and continue to perform at exceptional service levels. Brand equity, once lost, is very hard to regain and can even take longer than before. Losing a few million dollars for a $10+ billion brand is worth the risk.
Separately, what also interests me is that Singapore Airlines has maintained its superior customer service brand by creating a "House of Brands" with SilkAir (and more recently with Scoot) to differentiate different offerings and cater to the different customer segments in a competitive market. Singapore Airlines was able to do this by maintaining operational excellence but providing clear branding across its different services for customers to easily differentiate.
