Organic Farming Insights in India: Shared by Pravin Chandan
With the population on a consistent rise worldwide, agricultural systems need to accommodate the growing food demand. As a result, they have implemented several unsustainable methods to produce higher yields. These methods use chemicals excessively, leading to multiple global issues like soil degradation, soil erosion, water pollution, loss of biodiversity, and climate change.
Organic farming in India is an incredible solution to help achieve food security goals through sustainable agriculture practices.
What is Organic Farming?
Organic farming refers to natural, eco-friendly, and sustainable practices of farming. Its produce is clean and healthy for the consumers and economically advantageous for the farming communities. The practice focuses on reducing or eliminating external inputs like artificial fertilizers, pesticides, additives, etc. Growth of Organic Farming in India
India ranks number one for the total number of organic farmers as per 2021 data and sixth for the World’s Organic Agricultural land. (Source: FIBL & IFOAM Year Book, 2023).
The world’s first state to become completely organic was Sikkim. States like Uttarakhand and Tripura follow with similar targets.
The use of chemicals in North East India is much less than in the rest of the country.
The total area registered for organic farming under the National Programme for Organic Production is 10.17 million hectares as of 31st March 2023.
Madhya Pradesh has the largest area covered under organic certification.
In 2022-2023, India produced approximately 2.9 million metric tons of certified organic products. These included different varieties of food products like sugarcane, millet, cereals, oil seeds, pulses, cotton, tea, coffee, spices, fruits, vegetables, dry fruits, aromatic and medicinal plants, fibre, processed foods, etc.
Methods of Organic Farming in India - A Brief Overview by Pravin Chandan
Different techniques of organic farming are practised in India. Here’s a brief overview of each of them.
Soil Management Soil management is the first organic farming technique. It focuses on using bacteria available in animal waste to increase the soil’s fertility and productivity.
Weed Management Weed removal is the next organic farming method. One option is to move or cut the weed. The second option is mulching. Farmers use plant residue or a plastic film on the soil’s surface to restrict the weed’s growth.
Crop Diversity One of India’s most famous organic farming methods is crop diversity. It focuses on cultivating different crops together to cater to the growing crop demand.
Natural Management of Organisms To save the soil and crops, it is essential to control the growth of organisms. This organic farming method uses natural or fewer chemicals, pesticides, and herbicides to protect soil and crops.
Biological Pest Control This method uses living organisms with or without chemicals to control pests.
Final Thoughts
Many Indian farmers use the above methods of organic farming in India. The practice is affordable as there is no expense of pesticides, fertilizers, or HYV seeds for crop plantation. Farmers can earn a good return on investment using local and inexpensive inputs.

Which state is No 1 in organic farming?
As of my knowledge cutoff in September 2021, it is challenging to determine the current ranking of states in organic farming as the data may vary and change over time. However, certain states in India have been at the forefront of promoting organic farming.
Sikkim, a state in northeastern India, is often recognized as a pioneer and leader in organic farming. In 2016, Sikkim became the first fully organic state in India, where all agricultural practices are carried out using organic and sustainable methods. The state government of Sikkim took proactive measures to promote organic farming, phased out the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, and implemented policies to support and incentivize farmers in adopting organic practices.
Other states in India that have shown significant progress and commitment to organic farming include Maharashtra, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, and Kerala. These states have implemented various initiatives and programs to promote organic farming, provide training and support to farmers, and create organic farming clusters.
It is important to note that organic farming practices and initiatives are not limited to just one state, and several other states in India are actively promoting and practicing organic agriculture. The organic farming movement is growing across the country as more farmers and stakeholders recognize the importance of sustainable and chemical-free agricultural practices.
Which state is 100% organic?
As of my knowledge cutoff in September 2021, Sikkim is the only state in India that has achieved the status of being 100% organic. In 2016, Sikkim was declared the first fully organic state in India, where all agricultural practices are carried out using organic and sustainable methods.
The Government of Sikkim took proactive measures to promote organic farming, gradually phased out the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, and implemented policies to support and incentivize farmers in adopting organic practices. This concerted effort led to Sikkim's achievement of becoming a fully organic state.
It is important to note that the status of organic farming in different states may have evolved since my last update. It's recommended to refer to the latest available information to ascertain the current status of organic farming in any specific state.
Which state is 100% organic in world?
As of my knowledge cutoff in September 2021, there is no entire state or country in the world that has been officially designated as 100% organic. While there are regions and individual farms that have achieved organic certification and practice organic farming exclusively, it is rare to find an entire state or country that has achieved complete organic status for all agricultural practices.
However, it's worth noting that several countries have made significant progress in promoting organic farming and have a high percentage of agricultural land dedicated to organic practices. For example, countries such as Austria, Sweden, and Switzerland have a significant proportion of their agricultural land under organic cultivation.
It's important to stay updated with the latest information as the status of organic farming can evolve and change over time. Different regions and countries continue to work towards increasing organic farming practices and promoting sustainable agriculture.

Top 7 places to visit in Sikkim
Sikkim is a beautiful state nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas in India. Sikkim is a must-visit location for anyone wishing to experience the best of the Himalayas.
It is known for its amazing scenery, colorful culture, and kind hospitality. Here are the top 7 Sikkim destinations you must see if you're thinking about visiting.
Gangtok Gangtok is the capital city of Sikkim and the hub of all activity in the state. It serves as the Gangtok District's administrative center. At a height of 1,650 m (5,410 ft), Gangtok is located in the eastern Himalayan range. The 100,000 residents of the city are from a variety of Sikkimese ethnic groups, including Indian Gorkhas, Bhutia, and Lepchas. Gangtok serves as the center of Sikkim's tourism sector and is located among the higher Himalayan ranges, where the climate is warm and temperate all year round. Gangtok is a must-visit location because of its humming markets, vibrant culture, and incredible views of the Himalayas. Many monasteries and temples can be found in the city, including the Rumtek Monastery and the Enchey Monastery, both of which are significant religious sites. Tsomgo Lake Tsomgo Lake, also known as Tsongmo Lake or Changgu Lake, is a glacial lake in the East Sikkim district of the Indian state of Sikkim, some 40 kilometers (25 mi) from the capital Gangtok. Located at an elevation of 3,753 m (12,313 ft), the lake remains frozen during the winter season. The lake's surface reflects different colors with the change of seasons and is held in great reverence by the local Sikkimese people. Buddhist monks prognosticated after studying the changing colors of the lake. Tourist attractions at the lake site include joy rides on decorated yaks and mules where kiosks offer a variety of food and drinks. There is also a small Shiva temple on the bank of the lake. As the lake is located in a restricted area it is essential for all Indians visiting the area to obtain permits. In the case of foreign nationals special permit is essential. The lake is famous for its crystal-clear waters that change colors throughout the day and is bordered by snow-capped mountains. Nathula Nathula is a mountain pass in the Dongkya Range of the Himalayas between China's Yadong County in Tibet, and the Indian states of Sikkim and West Bengal in Bengal, South Asia. The pass, which rises to a height of 4,310 meters (14,140 feet), connects Gangtok and Kalimpong with the settlements in the lower Chumbi Valley. Winters in Nathula Pass bring a lot of snowfall. This region could experience temperatures as low as -25 degrees Celsius. If you really enjoy the snow, you can wear heavy wool clothing and explore Nathula Pass in the winter. The summer season, when the temperature hovers around 10 degrees Celsius, lasts from May to mid-November. Yumthang Valley The Yumthang Valley, also known as the Sikkim Valley of Flowers sanctuary, is a natural preserve in the North Sikkim district of Sikkim state in India that features a river, hot springs, yaks, and grazing pasture on undulating meadows. At a distance of 150 kilometers (93 miles) from the state capital Gangtok, it is located at an elevation of 3,564 meters (11,693 ft) above mean sea level. A trip to Yumthang Valley is never complete without taking a yak ride. Yumthang Chu and Puniya Chu, two nearby rivers with good fishing, are close by. And only 7-8 kilometers away lies the stunning Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary, a 35 square km field home to over 38 distinct species of rhododendrons. A hiker's trail goes to a little bridge that crosses over to the Yumthang Hot Spring on the way to the Yumthang Valley. What is surprising about this location is that the water coming from there stays warm even during the coldest temperatures. Additionally, due to the high sulphur content, it is thought to have medicinal value for healing. In addition to the hot spring, there is a very well-known Shiva Temple about 7 km to the north. Another extremely well-liked trekking location is Zero Point, which is about 23 km from the Yumthang valley at an elevation of approximately 15,000 ft, not far from the Chinese border. Its outstanding visual appeal and unimpeded view of the snowy peaks make it extremely appealing to hikers. Pelling Pelling is a mountainous town in Sikkim, India's Gyalshing district. Pelling is tucked away at a height of 2,150 meters (7,200 feet). The settlement lies 10 kilometers from Gyalshing City, the district's administrative center, and 131 kilometers from Gangtok. The two towns are linked by a frequent bus service. However, due to the increase in visitors, the area is changing, with the construction of hotels and repairs to the roads. At an altitude of 2000 meters, Pelling experiences summer temperatures as high as 25 degrees Celsius and winter temperatures as low as 1 degree Celsius. In the summer, it is quite warm and comfortable. July through September is when the monsoons occur. Pelling can be visited throughout the year, however, it is advisable to stay away from a trip during the monsoon seas Lachung Lachung is a town and hill station in northeast Sikkim, India.
