I also found this at etiquettescholar.com: "In the ale houses of Elizabethan England, a bit of spiced toast was usually put in the bottom of a cup of ale or wine to flavor it, and pos­sibly to soak up the dregs. In time, any male or female whose qualities or accomplishments were frequently honored with a group drink came to be called 'toasts'." Did you know this was a thing?! A rainbow stack repost for #signetsaturday and my 4 year bookstagram anniversary! 🎊 Over the past four years my photos, reading, and friendships have grown and I couldn't be happier to have found this little corner of the internet. I haven't had many other readers in my life since moving to Italy, so it used to be that I would read a book and that was it. No one to talk to about it or to be interested in what I was reading. Then one fateful day for years ago, while eating a ridiculous amount of bread and butter while reading Great Expectations, I thought up the idea for this account and found all of you, broadened my horizons, and accumulated far too many books. I mixed up my backgrounds for #frenchlitfriday and #signetsaturday (which I posted yesterday). My mom studied French in University and I just noticed that her "Le Livre de Poche" collection of paperbacks have these stunning coloured pages! I'm stealing this Balzac because I love the cover and because I hope, someday, I'll be able to read it in French. One can always dream... Does anyone collect these?
