Sundaes and Sorrows
Yoshi Isagi x reader
W.C: 2k
~ After a rough game, Isagi is feeling down in the dumps. But while he is sulking away on the team's bus, you have been hard at work preparing a special surprise for him when he gets home.
Tumblr media
Beads of sweat drip from Yoichi Isagi's brow as he sprints across the scorching pitch. The hot afternoon sun has bullied him since kickoff, and now, 86 minutes in. Both teams are scoreless.
The sticky rain from the first half has made the field extremely slippery, and he dreads to think of the thick layer of grass that clings to the bottom of his cleats. His body is sore from taking one too many hard hits, But he continues to play on.
His eyes are wide as he analyzes his opponents, looking for any crack in their back line where he can slip through and not end the match in an unsatisfying tie game.
After ricocheting the ball off of the knee of a too-slow defender, his friend, Meguru Bachira, steps out of bounce to take a throw-in. The momentary break allows the striker to catch a glimpse of the camera; he had been so engrossed in the game that he hadn't spared it a second glance before, but he briefly stairs through the lens, knowing that you, his loving partner, is at home watching this game.
Knowing that you are cheering him on gives him just enough energy to keep going.
He has to win this game for you. Because you deserve to see a goal.
~
You want to see a goal.
Back in the comfort of your home, you nervously grip the hem of the light blanket you have draped across your lap.
Yoichi looks exhausted. He had taken far too many hits this game, and only half of those resulted in a whistle being blown.
Through the screen of your TV, the other team sends a through ball that cuts across the field and breaks the back line.
The opposing striker, having made an exceptional run, lines up with the ball at his feet, his eyes on the net as he winds up to take his shot. The game-winner.
Striking through with his laces, he sends a bullet headed straight toward the upper v. You hold your breath…
A gloved hand sticks out just enough, and the contact alters the path as the goalkeeper pushes up towards the crossbar and releases the air from your lungs.
It's a save!
With most of the opposition out of position, your boyfriend's team counterattacks in this pivotal transition moment. Reo clears the ball, sending it all the way from the top of the 18, just in front of the on-side Isagi.
He's all alone with no one but the opposing team's goalkeeper and his path. He dribbles taking careful touches toward the goal guardian. Although you can't see on the camera, you know his face is on the path ahead of him to the goal.
Just when he is within shooting distance, the goalkeeper makes a gamble and steps off his line in a 1v1 situation in the box. Logo-covered hands just inches away from the ground as he creeps forward, waiting for the shot.
With bated breath, you watch as your boyfriend lunches to the left and takes the ball with his right, juking the goalkeeper out. But his touch was too big on the slick grass, and the ball rolls out of the bounce.
In a mixture of shock and distress, he places his hands in his hair, the realization that he just blew the game-winning goal hitting him hard as the referee blows his whistle, signaling the end of the game.
As he walks off the field, you can tell from his body language that he is crushed. Unable to look at the site any longer, you turn off the TV.
But he does not have the luxury of just changing the channel on this. No, your dear, sweet boyfriend now has to sit on a crowded, smelly bus for the next six hours, just stewing in the stink of his mistake.
~
30 minutes later, your phone starts to ring. As you pick up the cold device, you spot his smiling contact image that definitely will not match his current mood.
"Hey baby," you say into the speaker, trying your best to sound comforting from so far away. "How are you doing?"
"Not great," he says, doing little to hide the disappointment in his tone. You can practically see his sad blue eyes and crushed pout he is wearing. "Did you watch the game?"
"I did," you respond, "I'm sorry about the tie; it was a really close game."
"Too close to be scoreless," he sighs, "I really wanted to score for you today, but I screwed that up."
"No one else scored either, Yoichi," you say firmly, doing your best to pull him out of his post-game funk. "I watched the game because I love you, not because I expect to see goals."
"You're right," he relents. "Do you think I could stay at your place tonight? I really want to see you, and things have been crazy lately."
"You wanna have a little sleepover? You tease, and you swear you can feel his lips curving up into a smile.
"Yeah, I really do," he says, a slight echo in his voice as you walk into what you presume is the locker room. A bit of disappointment begins to brew in your gut when you realize that your conversation will be getting cut short.
"I'm sorry, y/n, but it looks like we are gonna be clearing out here soon. If I don't shower before I get on the bus, I'm gonna regret it."
You can only imagine how bad the whole bus of professional soccer stars would smell. "No worries, you do what you need to do. What time do you think you will get to mine?"
"It's hard to tell, but I think it will be about six and a half hours from now," he says after a pause.
"Sounds good, I love you," you smile into the receiver, your mind already trying to decide what you can do in that free time to make a day just a bit better.
"I love you too," he says. The last thing you hear on his end is the deep, authoritarian voice of Barou yelling in the background as he hangs up.
Sliding your phone into your pocket, you get off the couch and grab your car keys. Six hours is more than enough time for you to prepare a surprise for him.
~
After your phone call all those hours ago, the day you realized that you may have gotten a tad carried away preparing for your cozy night in with Yoichi. Looking over all your hard work, your heart swells with pride as you eagerly wait for your dejected boyfriend's mood to be sweetened by the fruits of your labor.
And the over-the-top ice cream sundae bar you pulled together after being inspired by a photo on Pinterest. Ice cream is one of the best tools you have when pulling your boyfriend out of his post-game, probably low-blood sugar-enhanced funk. So you know he is going to love the extra effort you put into pulling it all together.
Although the actual pints of ice cream are still in the freezer, you have set up some bowls with chopped nuts, sprinkles, hot fudge, whipped cream, and even some of those little cherry things. Sure… you also got dinner and some other snacks, but you two are adults, which means that you can eat dessert first.
With everything set up and ready to go, you scan your home one more time just to make sure you haven't missed anything.
The sweet smell of not-too-strong candles dance through the living room as a mountain of fluffy blankets adorn your couch. The coffee table is littered with some of his favorite video games that you guys can play together, and if he isn't feeling like playing anything, you have a few of his favorite movies on standby.
However, spotting the FIFA disc at the top of the pile of games, you decide to tuck it away in a cabinet. The purpose of the sleepover is to cheer him up a bit and forget about soccer for the night.
The cabinet door shoots just as the knob to your front door twists, and an exhausted-looking Yoichi stumbles into your warm, welcoming space. His blue eyes seem to brighten when he sees you.
"Hi." he smiles as you hurry into his embrace. His lips are quick to find yours, and the sweet touch is like a remedy to him, alleviating the pain of a long game and longer bus ride.
"Hi," you murmur, feeling more at home in his arms than in your apartment. "M' glad you made it."
"Me too; I hate those long bus rides." he sighs, running a hand through his dark hair. "Everyone was still so upset about the game, so no one said a word the entire ride. It felt like we were stuck in that box for a year."
"That's no fun," you say, looking up at his tired features. After everything he has been through today, it is very possible he will just want to goto bed early and pretend this day never happened.
The realization unsettles you as your sweet boyfriend looks around your apartment, taking notice of your hard work with that incredible special observation that made him a professional athlete. "Y/n, things look different here. Did you set up something?"
"I have no idea what you are talking about," you say innocently as he takes your hand and wanders through your apartment. His face goes from confusion to bliss as he eyes your couch setup, the games, the movies, and the snacks you have strategically placed in your living room.
"Did you do all of this for me?" he asks.
"Maybe." you murmur, "I just wanted to do something to cheer you up since you were so upset from the game earlier.
"You're the best,"  he says, his eyes shining with love as he pulls you into his embrace. "I mean it, really. You blow me away." he starts to lead you to the couch.
"Wait," you say, abruptly stopping him from burying the two of you in a mountain of blankets. "We can't yet. You haven't seen everything."
"There's more?" his eyes nearly bug out of his head as you run off to the kitchen to pull the ice cream pints you bought out of the freezer before he sees.
The mint chocolate chip pint you bought especially for him hits the counter with a thud, and he walks into the room; curiosity becomes a joy as he sees the masterpiece you have set up for him. "Surprise…" you smile, quickly fixing an out-of-place cup of toppings. "I figured we could start off our night by drowning our sorrows in ice cream. And then we can get to the rest of it."
His lips pout. "But Ice cream is for winners~ wait, Is that Mint Chip?" he asks, zeroing in on his favorite flavor. You can barely contain your excitement as he reaches for the scooper and hands you a bowl. "Wow, look at all of these toppings. You really went all out."
"I figured you could use a bit of a pick me up, so feel free to dish up on as much ice cream as you want."
"This is amazing, I don't even know what to say." he chuckles dryly. "Just a few minutes ago I felt so terrible, and now I just feel so loved. Thank you, y/n, I really don't know what I did to deserve you."
He pulls you close to him and lets off a shaky, emotional sigh; although you are starving, you let him hold you as long as he needs to, even if it means the ice cream gets a bit softer in the meantime.

Quarantined
Cw: lab whump, sick whump, injections
Whumpee didn’t remember anything before the lab. They knew that must have had some kind of life because they were sure they didn’t grow up there. When they tried to think of what life was before, they drew a blank. Their mother’s face was just blurry enough that they couldn’t quite put it together. Their dad, was he even there?
Waking from their dream and shaking off the melancholy, they prepared for the day. They waited for their gruel to be pushed through the small window and awaited next directions.
“7.6.G it is time for daily assessments.” The tinny loudspeaker crackled to life.
‘7.6.G, that’s my name here, but, what was it before this?’ Whumpee wondered as they sat back in their facility-issued safety chair, bolted to the floor.
Someone in a white hazmat suit entered the room with a mirrored lens on covering their face so Whumpee couldn’t identify anyone.
“How are you feeling today, 7.6.G?” The suit asked.
“Fine.” Whumpee knew not to speak further lest they be punished. Do not speak unless spoken to, and make it short.
The suit hummed with efficiency as they took Whumpee’s blood pressure and oxygen saturation levels.
“Today is a special day! We are moving forward with testing on the project you’re involved in! This is good news!”
Whumpee smiled back at their reflection in the suit’s lens. The smile didn’t look genuine, Whumpee hoped it would fool the suit anyway. Whumpee had no idea whether it was good news or not in their case.
The suit left and after a while, Whumpee received a similar signal to sit in their chair for treatment.
‘Treatment? I don’t know if that sounds good to me..’
But ever so obedient, Whumpee sat and waited for this treatment. Two suits came in this time. Definitely not the one from the morning, they seemed very serious and carried a special cooler case with them.
“Identify yourself.” The taller suit barked at Whumpee.
“Uh, 7.6.G?”
The one holding the cooler case set it on the table next to Whumpee. Opening the case showed the interior was entirely covered in a packing foam to keep a small vial of clear liquid safe.
The tall one kept Whumpee’s attention as they asked them about how they were feeling and if they had generally good health, Whumpee wasn’t sure what this had to do with anything, and they didn’t really remember anyhow.
“We will go ahead with experiment XY70. You may begin.”
The second suit cleaned Whumpee’s arm with an alcohol pad and inserted a needle into Whumpee’s deltoid muscle. As the contents were pushed in, Whumpee yelped.
“Ow! It stings!”
“Sit STILL!”
Whumpee immediately quieted. They had misbehaved.
The tall one loomed over Whumpee.
“You had better hope you didn’t just ruin this experiment. You are the test subject. The throw away. I could easily find another and get rid of you just as easily. Do you understand? Do you understand that you’re expendable? Do you realize that I have chosen you out of hundreds of others and I have housed and fed you out of my own pocket? I just injected you with 1 million dollars worth of science. And you are still expendable to me. So stop talking. We will be back in an hour to check your vitals.”
The suits left and the tall one slammed the door to Whumpee’s room.
‘Well, I guess they’re in charge.’
As Whumpee’s heart rate slowed from their panic of being in trouble, Whumpee felt their eyelids starting to droop. Whumpee stood up to walk over to their bed and the room began to spin. Stumbling, Whumpee made it to their bed and practically fell into the spongy mattress.
Shivering, Whumpee pulled the thin blanket on top of them and curled into themselves to keep warm. The loudspeaker crackled to life. “Take your seat for the 1 hour inspection.”
Whumpee cracked open their eyes. That couldn’t have been an hour. Did they.. fall asleep? They wanted to get up. They had to. But they just couldn’t will themselves to do it. They felt exhausted. Any slight movement sent waves of pain that shocked them to their core.
The door opened and the two suits re-emerged from wherever the door led to.
“Why are you still in bed?” The tall one started, “The loudspeaker gave you an ORDER.”
“I- *cough* -I-I’m sorry, I- *cough* -I can’t get up.”
The tall one paused as the shorter one pulled the blanket back gently.
“Elaborate.” The tall one commanded as the shorter one listened to Whumpee’s heart and lungs.
“I can’t brea-breathe very w-well and I - *cough* I’m so c-cold,” Whumpee’s teeth chattered. “Any- *wheeze* -anytime I try to move, it f-feels like I’ve be-been hit by a train.”
The tall one recorded this in a notebook and their body language seemed positive.
“Well,” the tall one snapped their book shut, “it looks like you’re worth something to me after all. Congratulations. We will be monitoring you as the illness progresses.”

Battle of the Fear Bands B1R4: The Spiral
The Distortionist:
This one was submitted twice, so I've added both pieces of propaganda below:
"Very Michael coded- a song about distortion and mirrors and nothing being what it seems."
"Just look at it okay. The title is perfect. The song itself is about a person who uses lies to get what they want and tries to cover up the cracks with more and more lies as it falls apart around them. The music video shows their body physically twisted around to visually show their twisting of the truth. And, of course, the wonderful lyrics, "Madness, it's madness/ Oh it's sickening, it's sickening/ You know, it's unfair, it's unfair/ How you distorted my reflection" which just screams Spiral."
youtube
Red Signal:
"A song about reality just completely falling apart."
youtube
Lyrics below the cut!
The distortionist:
(Something doesn't quite line up) Tears laced with cyanide flow through the cracks of a Mirror shattered long ago
And sure, I'm the one who swung the metal bat But hey, I can't control the urge! Nobody's gonna blame me for that
Impossible, impossible
Twist 'n turn it right around The details never safe or sound The truth projected through a lens with nothing proving otherwise
Now, take the time to realize, despite what you believe The victim of a massacre was none other than poor me
Surely you can see the problem I don't wanna lose my own reflection A deplorable perception of me Was none other than an image of you
(One, two, three, wait)
You're making a wreck of broken glass and leaving me a fuckin' mess! Bending light in a way that shows exactly how the story goes
Whimsical, dear, your lies are clear, now, who the hell would've ever guessed? Play my games and abide my ways, there's no way you can compensate
A monster, monster, monster, monster Now, run away, run away, run away I- I'm a monster, monster, monster, monster Now, run away, run away, run away Now, you're the monster
A glimmer of betrayal Changes my mind The odds against your favor, forever
Ignorant atrocities and colorless apologies This isn't what it looks to be I'm not as cruel as you see me
Take the time to realize, despite what you may see The mirrors cracked themselves and I was cut on the broken shards, and how I bled
Stuck in a spotlight brighter than the smile no one ever saw Bending light in a way that shows the truth that left our friends in awe
Whimsical, dear, your lies are clear, now, who the hell would've ever guessed? Play my games and abide my ways, there's no way you can compensate
Madness, it's madness Oh-ho, it's sickening, it's sickening You know it's unfair, it's unfair How you distorted my reflection
In all this madness, it's madness Oh-ho, it's sickening, it's sickening You know it's unfair, it's unfair How you distorted my reflection You know it's too late
You're lost in a world of funhouse mirrors, twisted for eternity Bending light in a way that shows refraction of hypocrisy
Whimsical, dear, your lies are clear, now, who the hell would've ever guessed? Play my games and abide my ways, there's no way you can compensate (One, two, three, break)
Tears laced with cyanide flow through the cracks of a Mirror shattered long ago
And sure, I'm the one who swung the metal bat But hey, I can't control the urge! Nobody's gonna blame me for that
(One, two, three, break)
Red Signal:
Y'AI 'NG'NGAH, YOG-SOTHOTH H'EE-L'GEB F'AI THRODOG UAAAH OGTHROD AI'F GEB'L-EE'H YOG-SOTHOTH 'NGAH'NG AI'Y ZHRO
[Another minute of chanting]
And the walls begin to tear. Not the walls of the train, but those of a false and hollow reality, twisting in its thrall to Yog Sothoth, the key and the gate through whose cascading rainbow being the train has passed. Yog Sothoth who is the Bifrost, and whose dread invocation now shattered, drags them towards the roiling nuclear chaos of the mad deamon sultan at the centre of reality. A billion screaming squamous things approach, oozing and crawling through the shattered tatters of a sane world. All the doors are open now.

Synopsis: Bruce Wayne meets with a reformed Selina Kyle, the Catwoman, who wants to invest money in Wayne Enterprises as part of her efforts of going straight. Giving her a chance, Bruce agrees and after she has left the building, he asks Lucius Fox to investigate the activities and current profile of Miss Kyle. While on Lucius' office, Bruce meets his daughter Tiffany Fox, who runs Wayne Enterprises' ghetto drug-rehabilitation program.
Later, Batman answers the summons of the Bat-Signal and meets with Commissioner Gordon on the crime scene, where they find the frozen body of financier Jacob Riker, a clear work by the master criminal Mister Freeze. At the same time, another millionaire, John McVee, undergoes one of Mr. Freeze's cryogenic treatments, hoping to have his lifespan greatly increased. As Freeze's treatment starts, McVee's body temperature lowers, his aging processes slows, but the end result is not a success. McVee's body survives, but his brain cells remain frozen, turning him into a living zombie, and is thus added to Freeze's servile "Cold Pack", a group of failed experiments commanded by Freeze. The whole purpose of these experimentations is to recreate his own accident in order to repeat the process on his newfound lover, Hildy, who is secretly planning to kill Freeze after he does so.
Batman tracks down Freeze in his headquarters, but is overcome by the Cold Pack and given the freeze-treatment. However, he has ripped out enough power cables beforehand to ensure that he does not get the full-power treatment, but he still pretends to become one of Freeze's failed experiments. Infatuated with Batman, Hildy starts speaking to the "Batman zombie" about her plans to eliminate Freeze and maybe then, she would save Batman. After listening to her confession, Freeze turns against her and Batman stops pretending to be a zombie to confront Freeze. Realizing that the other zombies obey Freeze's command through the helmet of his Cryo-Suit, Batman shatters Freeze's command-helmet and knocks him down, severing the regulating cable of his Ice Gun in the process. Hildy grabs the gun and fires at them, but the weapon backfires and she is encased in solid ice. Batman is finally able to capture Freeze and takes him to the authorities for the crimes he's committed. Elsewhere, S.T.A.R. Labs scientists bury the body of Mark Desmond, thinking they have killed him with a radiation treatment intended to normalize him. However, as they leave the Gotham Cemetery, huge hands break the surface of the grave.

Bond Auctions & Forex Moves: What Traders Need to Know Trading Trends Decoded: Hidden Patterns That Move the Markets It’s a tale as old as trading itself—a sluggish market, a couple of yawns, and the occasional glance at your charts. But even the most uneventful market days are like a mystery novel; you just need the right lens to uncover the plot twists. Buckle up, traders, because today we’re unpacking those twists. The "Why" Behind the Sideways Shuffles Let’s kick things off with the U.S. 10-year Treasury futures. Picture a dog on a leash that’s just the right length—it’s got room to roam but never too far. This was the mood of the market: sideways, with any upside moves muzzled by a lackluster 30-year bond auction. Traders kept one eye on the leash and the other on next week’s economic data, unwilling to commit without a clear signal. Now let’s jet to Europe. Bund futures played the reluctant hero, softer than a croissant but with resistance—like a crust—just under 135.00. This was no accident. The price action carried over from the day before, cementing a cautious narrative. Germany’s economic data, or lack thereof, acted like a dim streetlight—just enough to see but not to sprint. And then there’s Japan, where the 10-year JGB futures bucked the global trend. It’s like spotting a rebellious teenager in a room full of nodding heads. Recent reports hint that the Bank of Japan is likely keeping rates unchanged next week, giving the JGB’s a little wiggle room for optimism. The Auction Drama: U.S. 30-Year Bond Edition If auctions were theater, the U.S. 30-year bond sale was a two-star production—not terrible, but nobody’s buying tickets for a rerun. The high yield dipped to 4.535% from a prior 4.608%, which sounds like good news until you notice the tail at 1.2bps. For perspective, that’s like ordering a steak medium-rare and getting it well done—not catastrophic, but not what you wanted. The bid-to-cover ratio slid to 2.39x, below the six-auction average of 2.44x. Indirect bidders showed up (66.5%), but directs pulled a Houdini, dropping to 19.1% from 27.1%. Dealers, those eternal backstops, took a heavier load at 14.4%. These numbers tell a story of cautious optimism tempered by the kind of doubt that keeps you from going all in. Finding the Hidden Gems Here’s where we separate the casual observers from the elite tacticians. These numbers might look like noise, but they’re breadcrumbs leading to tomorrow’s trades. Let’s break it down: 1. JGB Futures: The Contrarian Play Japan’s decision to potentially keep rates unchanged isn’t just a policy move; it’s a signal to traders looking for a low-risk haven. For Forex traders, this could mean an opportunity in yen pairs, especially if the BoJ confirms their stance next week. 2. Treasury Market Tailwinds The dip in high yield and tail size offers insights into market sentiment. It’s cautious but not pessimistic. For dollar bulls, this could mean a slight edge in the coming week—not a rally but enough movement to exploit in short-term trades. 3. European Bunds: A Sleeper Opportunity The resistance at 135.00 might not be flashy, but it’s a psychological level worth watching. If Bund futures push past it, that’s your cue to dig deeper into EUR/USD trades. Advanced Insights for the Curious For the traders who’ve made it this far (and bless your patience), let’s dive into actionable insights: - Breakout Strategies: Keep an eye on psychological levels like the Bund’s 135.00. A clean break could indicate broader sentiment shifts. - Mean Reversion in Treasuries: Use the tail and bid-to-cover metrics to gauge potential reversals. If sentiment shifts, there’s room for a quick counter-trend trade. - Yen Strength: JGB optimism could spill over into the yen. Watch for opportunities in USD/JPY and EUR/JPY, especially if global risk sentiment tilts. Wrapping It Up with a Bow (and Some Humor) Market moves might seem mundane on the surface, but remember—even a dull knife can cut if you know how to handle it. Stay sharp, keep your eyes on the patterns, and maybe treat yourself to a croissant while you analyze those Bund charts. You’ve earned it. ————— Image Credits: Cover image at the top is AI-generated   Read the full article

Ophthalmic
Anatomy, Physiology, and Pathophysiology Overview
The eye is the organ responsible for the sense of sight.
The exposed anterior portion of the eye is covered by three layers: the protective external layer (cornea and sclera), a vascular middle layer known as the uvea (includes the choroid, iris, and ciliary body), and the internal layer, known as the retina. All of these layers are protected by the eyelid, which serves as an external protective tissue.
Each eye is held in place and moved by six muscles that are controlled by cranial nerves. These muscles include the rectus and oblique muscles. There are four types of rectus muscles: inferior, superior, medial, and lateral. There are two types of oblique muscles: inferior and superior.
Lacrimal Glands
The lacrimal glands produce tears that bathe and cleanse the exposed anterior portion of the eye. Tears are composed of an isotonic, aqueous solution that contains an enzyme called lysozyme, which acts as an antibacterial to help prevent eye infections. Tears drain into the nasal cavity through the lacrimal ducts.
Layers of the Eye
The fibrous outer layer of the eye has two parts that are continuous with each other: the sclera and the cornea. The sclera is a tough, fibrous layer that protects and maintains the shape of the eye. The cornea is a nonvascular transparent portion of the outer layer that allows light to enter the eye. It obtains nutrition from the aqueous humor, the clear watery fluid that circulates in the anterior and posterior chambers of the eye.
The vascular middle layer of the eye is composed of the iris (to the anterior), ciliary body, and choroid (to the posterior), collectively called the uvea. The iris gives color to the eye and has an adjustable opening in the center called the pupil. The main function of the iris is to regulate the amount of light that enters the eye by causing the size of the pupil to vary. Pupil size is controlled by the sphincter pupillae muscle and by a radial smooth muscle called the dilator muscle.
Aqueous humor contributes, along with vitreous humor, to the intraocular pressure of the eye.
The lens is the transparent crystalline structure of the eye, located behind the iris and the pupil. It has a biconvex shape and is held in place by ligaments attached to the ciliary muscle.
The larger chamber behind the lens is filled with a jellylike fluid called the vitreous body.
The lens is transparent to allow light to pass through easily. A loss of lens transparency results in a visual condition called a cataract.
The elasticity of the lens enables it to change its shape and focusing power (accommodation), facilitated by the ciliary body. Paralysis of accommodation is called cycloplegia.
Mydriatics are drugs that dilate the pupil (e.g., apraclonidine). Drugs that constrict the pupil are called miotics (e.g., acetylcholine, pilocarpine). Drugs that paralyze the ciliary body are called cycloplegics, but they also have mydriatic properties (e.g., atropine, cyclopentolate).
The third and inner layer of the eye is a thin delicate layer known as the retina. It contains light-sensitive photoreceptors called rods and cones. The basic function of the retina is to receive the light image formed by the lens and to convert it into the neural signals that support vision.
Pathophysiology of Glaucoma
Glaucoma is a disorder of the eye caused by inhibition of the normal flow and drainage of aqueous humor, and treatment helps to reduce intraocular pressure either by increasing the drainage of aqueous humor or decreasing its production.
Drugs that increase aqueous humor drainage are direct cholinergics, indirect cholinergics, sympathomimetics, and beta-blockers.
Two major types of glaucoma are angle-closure glaucoma and open-angle glaucoma.
Glaucoma can be a primary illness or it can be secondary to another eye condition or injury (e.g., posttraumatic glaucoma). Congenital glaucoma can also occur in infants.

Medications used to treat disorders of the eye can be divided into several major drug groups: antiglaucoma drugs, antimicrobials, anti-inflammatory drugs, topical anesthetics, diagnostic drugs, antiallergic drugs, and lubricants and moisturizers.
 Antiglaucoma Drugs
Treatment of glaucoma involves reducing intraocular pressure by either increasing the drainage of aqueous humor or decreasing its production. Some drugs may do both.
Drug classes used to reduce intraocular pressure include direct-acting cholinergics (also called miotics and parasympathomimetic drugs), indirect-acting cholinergics (also called miotics, cholinesterase inhibitors, and parasympathomimetic drugs), adrenergics (also called mydriatics and sympathomimetic drugs), antiadrenergics (beta-blockers; also called sympatholytic drugs), carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, osmotic diuretics, and prostaglandin agonists.
The newest class of drugs used to treat glaucoma is the prostaglandin agonists. The most commonly used drugs in this class include latanoprost (Xalatan), travoprost (Travatan-Z), bimatoprost (Lumigan), and tafluprost (Zioptan).
Cholinergic Drugs (Miotics)
Direct-acting cholinergics include acetylcholine, carbachol, and pilocarpine.
Indirect-acting drugs, which are also called cholinesterase inhibitors, include echothiophate, the only available drug. Since the primary effect is pupillary constriction or miosis, they are also commonly called miotics.
Acetylcholine is the neurochemical mediator of nerve impulses in the parasympathetic nervous system, stimulating parasympathetic or cholinergic receptors resulting in several effects on the eye: miosis, vasodilation of blood vessels in and around the eye, contraction of ciliary muscles, drainage of aqueous humor, and reduced intraocular pressure.
Ciliary muscle contraction promotes aqueous humor drainage by widening the space where the drainage occurs. Miosis promotes aqueous humor drainage by causing the iris to stretch, which also serves to widen this space.
Direct- and indirect-acting miotics have effects similar to those of acetylcholine, but their actions are more prolonged.
The direct- and indirect-acting miotics are used for the treatment of open-angle glaucoma, angle-closure glaucoma, and convergent strabismus (“cross-eye”) and in ocular surgery.
Most adverse effects from the use of cholinergics and cholinergic inhibitors are local and limited. Adverse effects are more likely with indirect-acting miotics because they are longer-lasting. Effects include blurred vision, drug-induced myopia (nearsightedness), and accommodative spasms.
Sympathomimetics (Mydriatics)
Sympathomimetic drugs are used for the treatment of glaucoma and ocular hypertension. These drugs include alpha receptor agonists brimonidine (Alphagan P) and apraclonidine (Iopidine), and alpha and beta receptor agonists epinephryl (Epinal) and dipivefrin (Propine).
Sympathomimetic drugs mimic the neurotransmitters norepinephrine and epinephrine, stimulating dilator muscle contraction by alpha and/or beta receptor interaction resulting in mydriasis.
Both epinephrine and dipivefrin are used to reduce elevated intraocular pressure in the treatment of chronic open-angle glaucoma, either as initial therapy or as long-term therapy. Increases in intraocular pressure during surgery are usually mediated via increased catecholamine stimulation.
Adverse effects of the sympathomimetic mydriatics are primarily limited to temporary ocular effects and include burning, eye pain, and lacrimation.
Beta-Adrenergic Blockers
The antiglaucoma beta-adrenergic blockers that reduce intraocular pressure include the beta1-selective drugs betaxolol and levobetaxolol.
The ophthalmic beta blockers reduce both elevated and normal intraocular pressure. They reduce intraocular pressure by reducing aqueous humor formation.
Ophthalmic beta-blockers are used to reduce elevated intraocular pressure in chronic open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension. They may also be used alone or in combination with a topical miotic, which may have an additive intraocular pressure-lowering effect.
Adverse effects of beta blockers include transient burning and discomfort, blurred vision, pain, photophobia, lacrimation, blepharitis, keratitis, and decreased corneal sensitivity.
Carbonic Anhydrase Inhibitors
Ophthalmic carbonic anhydrase inhibitors include brinzolamide (Azopt) and dorzolamide (Trusopt). These two drugs are available only in topical ophthalmic form. Both drugs are also sulfonamides and are chemically related to the sulfonamide antibiotics. They should be used with caution in patients who are allergic to sulfa antibiotics.
Carbonic anhydrase inhibitors work by inhibiting the enzyme carbonic anhydrase, which results in decreased intraocular pressure by reduction of aqueous humor formation.
Ocular carbonic anhydrase inhibitors are used primarily for the management of glaucoma, both open-angle and angle-closure types, and may be used preoperatively to control intraocular pressure.
Patients with sulfa allergies may develop cross-sensitivities to carbonic anhydrase inhibitors.
Osmotic Diuretics
Osmotic drugs may be administered either intravenously, orally, or topically to reduce intraocular pressure; glycerin and mannitol are most commonly used.
Osmotic diuretics reduce ocular hypertension by causing the blood to become hypertonic, creating an osmotic gradient that pulls water from the aqueous and vitreous humors into the bloodstream, causing reduced volume of intraocular fluid and decreased intraocular pressure.
Osmotic diuretics are used for acute glaucoma episodes and reduction of intraocular pressure before or after ocular surgery. Glycerin is used first; if unsuccessful, mannitol is tried.
Osmotic diuretics are contraindicated with allergy, anuria, acute pulmonary edema, cardiac decompensation, and severe dehydration because they can worsen all of these conditions.
The most frequent reactions to osmotic diuretics are nausea, vomiting, and headache. The most significant adverse effects are fluid and electrolyte imbalances.
Prostaglandin Agonists
The newest class of drugs used to treat glaucoma is the prostaglandin agonists. The most commonly used drugs in this class include latanoprost (Xalatan), travoprost (Travatan-Z), bimatoprost (Lumigan), tafluprost (Zioptan), and latanoprostene bunod (Vyzulta).
In late 2017, the FDA approved netarsudil (Rhopressa) which is a Rho-kinase inhibitor, also known as a ROCK Inhibitor.
Prostaglandins reduce intraocular pressure in glaucoma by increasing the outflow of aqueous humor between the uvea and sclera as well as through the trabecular meshwork.
Prostaglandin agonists are well tolerated. Adverse effects include foreign body sensation, punctate epithelial keratopathy (dotted appearance of the cornea), stinging, conjunctival hyperemia, blurred vision, itching, and burning. Systemic effects occur infrequently.
In some people with hazel, green, or bluish-brown eye color, eye color will turn permanently brown, even after the medication is discontinued.
Concurrent administration of prostaglandin agonists with any other eye drops containing the preservative thimerosal may result in precipitation.

Antimicrobials
A variety of infections can occur in the eye; many are self-limiting. Topical antimicrobials used to treat ocular infections include antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral drugs.
Topical antimicrobials used to treat infections of the eye work to destroy the invading organism; actions are similar to those described for systemically administered drugs.
Ocular antimicrobials are used for known or suspected infection with one or more specific microorganisms. Empirical treatment is based on clinical evaluation of presenting symptoms.
The most common adverse effects of ocular antibiotics are local and transient inflammation, burning, stinging, urticaria, dermatitis, angioedema, and drug hypersensitivity.
Concurrent use of antibiotics and corticosteroids may interact. Corticosteroids have immunosuppressive effects that may impede the therapeutic effects of ocular antimicrobials.
A large proportion of the inflammatory diseases of the eye are caused by viruses, and many ocular antimicrobials are available to treat bacterial, viral, and fungal infections of the eye. Common infections include conjunctivitis, hordeolum, keratitis, uveitis, and endophthalmitis.
Antiinflammatory Drugs
A large proportion of the inflammatory diseases of the eye are caused by viruses, and many ocular antimicrobials are available to treat bacterial, viral, and fungal infections of the eye. Common ocular infections include conjunctivitis, hordeolum (sty), keratitis, uveitis, and endophthalmitis.
Antiinflammatory ophthalmic drugs include corticosteroids and are used to inhibit inflammatory responses to mechanical forces, chemicals, and immunologic reactions.
Antiinflammatory drugs used systemically may also be used ophthalmically to treat various ocular inflammatory disorders and ocular surgery-related pain and inflammation. These drugs include both nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and corticosteroids.
There are several NSAID eye drops, including bromfenac, ketorolac, flurbiprofen, and diclofenac, which can be used to decrease ocular inflammation following eye surgery or for seasonal conjunctivitis.
Corticosteroids and NSAIDs are applied topically for symptomatic relief of many ophthalmic inflammatory conditions and may be used to treat corneal, conjunctival, and scleral injuries from chemical, radiation, or thermal burns or from penetration of foreign bodies during acute phases of the injury to prevent fibrosis and scarring, which result in visual impairment.
The most common adverse effect of corticosteroids is transient burning or stinging. Extended use may result in cataracts, increased intraocular pressure, and optic nerve damage.

Topical Anesthetics
Topical anesthetics are used to prevent pain in the eye and are beneficial during surgery, ophthalmic examinations, and removal of foreign bodies. The two currently available topical anesthetics used for ophthalmic purposes are proparacaine and tetracaine.
Application of topical anesthetic drugs results in local anesthesia in less than 30 seconds; they are used to produce ocular anesthesia for short corneal and conjunctival procedures.
Adverse effects are rare with ophthalmic anesthetic drugs and are limited to local effects such as stinging, burning, redness, lacrimation, and blurred vision.
Diagnostic Drugs
Atropine sulfate solution and ointment are used as mydriatic and cycloplegic drugs. It is used to assist in eye examination or to treat uveal tract inflammatory states.
Cyclopentolate solution (Cyclogyl) is used as a diagnostic mydriatic and cycloplegic drug.
Fluorescein is a diagnostic dye used to identify corneal defects and foreign objects.
Antiallergic Drugs
Olopatadine (Patanol) is an ocular antihistamine used for allergic conjunctivitis (hay fever), which can be seasonal or nonseasonal. It works by competing at receptor sites for histamine, which produces ocular symptoms such as itching and tearing. Other ocular antihistamines include azelastine (Optivar), emedastine (Emadine), ketotifen (Zaditor, others), cetirizine (Zerivate), and epinastine (Elestat).
Cromolyn sodium (Crolom), an antiallergic drug that inhibits the release of inflammation-producing mediators from sensitized inflammatory cells, is used to treat vernal keratoconjunctivitis.
Tetrahydrozoline is an ocular decongestant, promoting vasoconstriction of blood vessels in and around the eye to reduce the edema associated with allergic and inflammatory processes. It is specifically indicated to control redness, burning, and other minor irritations.
An array of products is available over the counter to provide lubrication or moisture for the eyes. This is helpful to patients with dry or otherwise irritated eyes.
The newest drug approved for dry eyes is Lifitegrast (Xiidra). Lifitegrast is the first in a new class called lymphocyte function-associated antigen 1 (LFA-1) antagonist.
The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends that the FDA continue to use a uniform color-coding system for caps and labels of all topical ocular medications.

Nursing Process
Document any redness, swelling, pain, excessive tearing, eye drainage or discharge, decrease in visual acuity, or other unusual symptoms.
Focus the nursing history on past or present systemic disease processes and exposure to any chemicals that could be topical irritants to the eye, skin, or mucous membranes, including past or present occupational and environmental exposures.
Always check for any potential drug interaction associated with the ophthalmic medications.
Always inspect the solution, and administer only clear, unexpired products (e.g., drops, ointments, solutions) to the eye.
Administer all ophthalmic preparations exactly as ordered. Always apply to the conjunctival sac. Safe and accurate application or instillation technique also includes avoiding contact with the eyedropper or tube to the eye to prevent contamination of the drug.
Applying pressure to the inner canthus after the instillation of medication is needed to prevent or decrease systemic absorption and subsequent systemic adverse effects.
With abrasion or injury to the eye and appropriate medications, patching the affected eye is used to prevent further injury resulting from loss of blink reflex due to topical anesthetic.
Advise patients to report to the prescriber immediately any increase in symptoms, such as eye pain or drainage and fever.
Therapeutic responses to miotics include decreased aqueous humor of the eye with resultant decreased intraocular pressure and signs, symptoms, and long-term effects of glaucoma.
Beta-adrenergic blockers are therapeutic if intraocular pressure decreases. Adverse effects include weakness, eye irritation, rash, bradycardia, hypotension, and dysrhythmias.
Therapeutic responses to antibiotic, antifungal, and antiviral ophthalmic drugs include elimination of infection or condition and complications and resolution of symptoms.
Therapeutic responses to ophthalmic anesthetics include prevention or relief of pain.
Adverse effects may include central nervous system (CNS) excitation (e.g., dizziness, tremors, restlessness, nervousness) if the drug is systemically absorbed. Antiinflammatory ophthalmic solutions result in a decrease in allergic reactions with a decrease in itching, tearing, redness, and eye discharge. Potential complications of these solutions include swelling of the conjunctiva (chemosis).

Caught on Camera: A Camera Club Mystery by Kara Lacey About Caught on Camera Caught on Camera: A Camera Club Mystery Cozy Mystery 1st in Series Setting - Vermont Publisher ‏ : ‎ Level Best Books (September 24, 2024) Print length ‏ : ‎ 307 pages Digital ASIN ‏ : ‎ B0DGNDGPV4 Blue skies and wildflowers signal the start of summer in southern Vermont, and the Stonebridge Keep it Snappy Camera Club lenses are zoomed in on…murder. It's been more than a year since the sudden death of her husband, and photographer Bobbie Brooks wants nothing more than to escape her grief. Fleeing her life in the city, she seeks a fresh start in the serenity of the Green Mountains. But Bobbie’s new beginning comes to a halt when she finds a member of her camera club dead beneath the village’s idyllic covered bridge. Tragic accident or something sinister? With a keen photographer’s eye, Bobbie suspects murder. As if transitioning to small-town life wasn’t challenging enough, Bobbie’s missing scarf is found at the murder scene, making her the primary focus. Scorned by local gossips, she enlists the help of her camera club and shifts her lens from photographer to amateur sleuth. Using photos found on the victim’s camera, they waste no time setting out to catch the killer—and discover no shortage of suspects. Secrets, lies, and blackmail…Danger abounds as they close in on the killer. Her camera holds the answers… But can she develop the clues in time to stop the killer? Dollycas's Thoughts Photographer Bobbie Brooks needs a new start. Her husband's sudden death a little over a year ago has been so hard to accept. She wants, no needs, to escape her grief. Leaving her life in Boston behind she hopes she will find a way forward in Stonebridge, Vermont nestled within the Green Mountains. It is where her big sister has made her home with her family. She has found a home for herself and Darcy, her yellow Labrador retriever on Main Street with a cute barn that will make a perfect photography studio. Her first step in making her dream of turning her hobby into a profession is starting the Keep It Snappy Shutter Club. The club includes her sister, her best friend Rose, who owns the Rosebud Cafe, Tiffanee Jacobson who is in her mid-30s, pretty brash, and dating Rose's ex-husband, Jackson Gilbert, "an outdoorsy Vermonter with a flair of his own",  and Penny  Wright, the youngest member of the group and the first to join. Their first photo shoot is a covered bridge, but Tiffanee fails to meet up with the rest of the group. The group split up at the bridge anxious to get their unique clicks. Bobbie takes time to check on each one but she is still worried about the missing photographer. As dusk was falling she starts to take some pictures of her own. She gets an eerie feeling and notices a large bundle. Rushing to the motionless shape, she finds Tiffannee face down on the rocky riverbank.  To make matters worse, a scarf she had lost earlier is found at the scene of the crime making her the prime suspect. Bobbie decides to use her unique talents for observation to find the real killer and she asks the club to help. Turns out there are a plethora of suspects and she believes the pictures from the victim's camera can provide clues to bring the guilty party into focus. Can they clear Bobbie's name? And get justice for Tiffanee? Or will the killer take the final shot? _____ Kara Lacey introduced a group of very interesting characters in her first Camera Club Mystery. Protagonist Bobbie Brooks immediately captured my heart. While I haven't lost a husband, I have lost an adult son and know the pain that grief can bring and the way it shakes your whole world. I was happy to see her move to be close to her sister and her family. Alicia and Nate were there for her the whole way. As was her friend Rose. The closeness of these relationships was so heartwarming and genuine. Bobbie also has a daughter Emma away at school and everything about that relationship feels true to life. Readers are also introduced to a variety of Stonebridge residents, all pretty typical of what you find in any small town. I used to have a neighbor very much like Bobbie's Lester Miller, so I could relate there too. Ms. Lacey has crafted a compelling mystery. Secrets and lies abound as Bobbie tries to follow the clues while Detective Cram keeps his focus entirely on her. Things get shaken up when someone else is murdered sending Bobbie's theory out the window. I enjoyed how photos,  her knowledge, and her observation skills helped her bring all the pieces together. That and a little intuition set up a dramatic showdown followed by an exciting rescue and takedown. I do find the camera club theme very appealing. Like Penny, my camera is my phone. My husband, on the other hand, has taken his photography hobby to a new level with multiple lenses. Maybe we can both learn something from Bobbie. Caught on Camera is a very entertaining whodunit that has given this series a fantastic start. A strong protagonist, engaging supporting characters, and a top-notch mystery laced with humor, all set in an intriguing small town will delight cozy lovers. The last few paragraphs give readers a little snippet of what Bobbie has in her future. I am keen to see what adventure she and her camera club catch with their lenses next. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC. In a time far into the future, Earth had become a labyrinth of abandoned cities and obsolete technologies, the remnants of a civilization that once reached for the stars. Amid this world of faded glory, an unlikely character emerged from the shadows of forgotten tech: a small, weathered robot named Q'anil, named after the maize god from the ancient Maya text, the Popol Vuh.
Q'anil, equipped with a visor displaying a constant green glow, wandered through the deserted streets. It was built by an eccentric scientist who was fascinated by the Popol Vuh, believing that the principles within this sacred text could inspire a blueprint for ethical artificial intelligence. The robot's programming was unique, driven by a quest not just for knowledge, but for understanding life's mysteries, much like the Hero Twins from the Maya narratives.
One gloomy day, as Q'anil navigated through a decaying industrial district, its sensors detected an unusual signal emanating from beneath the rubble. Driven by curiosity, the robot cleared away debris to reveal a hidden chamber, untouched by time and the chaos above. Inside, Q'anil found an ancient artifact resembling a codex, its cover adorned with intricate glyphs.
The robot's system accessed its database, pulling up translations and information. The artifact was indeed a lost section of the Popol Vuh, detailing the creation of the first true humans — beings made of maize. The text spoke of harmony between nature and technology, a concept long forgotten by the humans of Q'anil's era.
With renewed purpose, Q'anil decided to follow the guidance of the ancient text, hoping to perhaps restore some balance to the world. It began collecting old technologies and plant species, integrating them in experiments aimed at creating life forms that could survive Earth’s new challenges.
As months turned into years, Q'anil's experiments bore fruit. Sprouts began to emerge from the soil, intertwined with nanotechnologies that helped them absorb nutrients from the barren earth. These were not just plants; they were a new kind of organism, a hybrid of organic and synthetic life, much like the maize humans of the Popol Vuh.
News of Q'anil’s garden spread, even reaching the few remaining human settlements. People ventured from afar to see this miracle of new life, and they brought with them their own knowledge, seeds, and tools. Together with Q'anil, they built a community around the garden, blending old world techniques with new world innovations.
Q'anil, once just an obsolete robot, had become a symbol of rebirth and unity, showing that even from the depths of decay and abandonment, life could find a way, guided by the wisdom of both ancient myth and modern necessity. Through the lens of the Popol Vuh, it didn't just interpret its directives; it lived them, fostering a new chapter in the saga of Earth.

Double Vision
Tumblr media
To have a normal vision, eyes apparatus, eye muscles, nerves that send signals to the brain and your brain need to function in harmony. Any problem to these components may lead to double vision, where you see two images instead of one, also known as Diplopia.
Double vision can be monocular or binocular. It can be horizontal (images appear side by side) or vertical (image appears above the other).
Double vision symptoms
Pain around the eyes, such as in the temples or eyebrows
Droopy eyelids
Misalignment of one or both eyes, such as crossed eyes or a "wandering” eye
Weakness in the eyes
Pain with eye movements in one or both eyes
Monocular Double vision
Monocular Double vision is less common than Binocular double vision and occurs due to a problem in one eye only. In Monocular Diplopia, one of the images is very clear, while the other is faded or washed out.
Causes
Cataract – With age, like other degenerative changes in the body, eyes also undergo certain changes like protein clumping within the lens of the eye. Natural eye lens is normally clear, but cataract causes it to grow cloudy and foggy over time. This can lead to vision problems, including double vision.
Dry eye – Our eyes produce lubricating fluids, to make blinking or turning your eyes more comfortable. Dry eyes makes you feel stinging, itching and vision problems.
corneal shape changes (keratoconus) – This eyesight problem occurs when the clear lining of cornea begins to grow thin and develop a cone-shaped bulge. This bulge can cause double vision.
Astigmatism – It occurs due to Irregular shape and curvature of the eye. It often leads to blurred and double vision.
Pterygium – It is a rare condition, where conjunctival growth covers the cornea and leads to diplopia.
Binocular Double vision
To differentiate Binocular with monocular diplopia, a simple test is done; if double image disappears after covering one eye, it is usually a case of Binocular Diplopia. In this case both are images are clear. Binocular Double vision is the result of any cause affecting the extra ocular muscles of the eye.
Causes
Diabetes – Diabetic retinopathy causes nerve damage and leads to double vision.
Myasthenia gravis – It is an immunological disease and causes disruption in neural and muscular communication. Muscle fatigue is developed throughout the body including eye and leads to double vision.
Cranial nerve palsy – Sometimes cranial nerves become paralyzed and it may develop double vision.
Nerve damage – In case of head trauma, infection, stroke, brain tumour, nerves controlling the eye movements may damage and leads to diplopia.
Strabismus (crossed eyes) – It is a condition affecting four percent of children and usually affects alignment of the eyes. The muscles of the eyes have trouble working together. It leads to a variety of vision problems like double vision and can cause permanent vision loss.
Is Double vision treatable?
Treatment of double vision varies from patient to patient, depending on the cause and type of diplopia. Once the underlying cause is identified by comprehensive eye examination, vision issues go away with the right treatment modality.
Common treatment available for diplopia are:
Eye exercises: Like other muscles of the body, our eye muscles can go weak, eye doctor can help you with eye muscle strengthening. They teach you with “exercises” that can help you regain eye muscle strength.
Corrective lenses: Eyeglasses or special lenses may correct the vision problem.
Eye patch or cover: Although it is not a long term solution, yet covering one eye may stop the double vision. An eye cover can help manage double vision until there is a more permanent solution.
Surgery: Issues like cataract or other eye problems need surgery at some point. Double vision goes away with the corrective procedure.
To learn more about eye problems and help you to decide for eye treatment, please call us for appointment at 011‐47024919 / 27012054 and meet our experts at Delhi Clinic.

How to Choose the Right Security Camera?
Tumblr media
Thanks to ever-expanding options for video surveillance, it's never been easier to protect your home, business and personal possessions. More and more home and business owners have opted to install private security networks on their premises to deter theft, monitor employee conduct and stay aware of what's happening on or around their property. And it's no wonder why security camera systems are available for just about every need and budget. They give you the freedom to view video footage from both on-premises CCTV monitors — or remotely from your computer or phone. Wondering how to choose the right security camera with all the options on the market? Start your search by asking yourself a few basic questions: BRIGHT LIGHT OR LOW LIGHT? The overall light level of the environment you're going to be filming in has a definite impact on your camera choice. If your video surveillance will be taking place in bright, well-lit areas, your choice of camera has very few limitations. That’s because ample light makes it easy for just about any security camera to capture clear footage. On the other hand, dim lighting conditions require a little extra consideration, because not every video surveillance camera is built to handle them. Look for a camera that has a light sensitivity rating of 1 Lux or below — it will either be labeled as a Day and Night camera or will list low-light compatibility among their specifications. Day/night video cameras give you the most flexibility, as they allow you to consistently monitor a given space, even if light levels continually fluctuate. INDOOR OR OUTDOOR? Indoor and outdoor environments not only differ in lighting conditions (like the ones we mentioned above), but also have another big differentiating factor: weather. While the indoors tends to be climate-controlled with heating, air conditioning and humidity-control, outdoors it's a whole different story. Wind, rain, UV rays and contaminants can all take an indoor-use security camera down in no time, so if you need to film outdoors, be sure to go with a tougher outdoor-grade camera. Keep in mind that even though most indoor cameras can't be used outside, many outdoor cameras are suitable for both indoor and outdoor surveillance. WIRED OR WIRELESS? Whether or not you want your security camera to be hardwired or not is another factor in your decision. Wired surveillance cameras typically send a more solid and secure video signal because they transmit via cable and not through the air. These can take more money and effort to install because wiring needs to be run. That either means hiring an installer or buying the cable and taking the time to do it yourself. On the other hand, wireless cameras can be placed virtually anywhere with ease, because you don't have to worry about running new cable or patching into existing cable runs. Signal security is also becoming much less of an issue, thanks to ever-improving encryption protocols like Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) and Temporal Key Integrity Protocol (TKIP). FIXED OR PTZ? Do you plan to keep your security camera fixated on one specific view? Or would you rather be able to look around? If you only need to focus on a certain section of a room, entrance or parking lot, then a standard-format fixed camera will do just fine. However, if you'd rather remotely swivel and zoom your camera to follow the action — or cover a wider area — then opt for a Pan-Tilt-Zoom (PTZ) surveillance camera. Unlike their stationary counterparts, PTZs are designed to freely move their lenses back and forth horizontally (that's the "panning" part), vertically (aka "tilt") and adjust lens focus (zoom). All this can be done at your command as needed. But there are also PTZ cameras that can be programmed to automatically pan, tilt and zoom whenever movement is detected. ON-PREMISES OR REMOTE VIEWING ACCESS? If you'll be filming all that video surveillance footage, how do you plan on viewing it? For many people, a video feed going to a digital video recorder (DVR) or CCTV monitor at home in the office is all that's needed. But what if you want to keep an eye on things from the road? That's where remote-access surveillance devices, otherwise known as Internet cameras, IP cameras, Wi-Fi cameras or network cameras, come into play. These are designed to be hooked up to a computer network via a wireless connection. With web-enabled cameras, you can log in and view what's going on from any computer or smartphone.
