On October 11, 2018, four ceremonial M17s built by Sig Sauer's Custom Shop were presented to The Old Guard for use by the Sentinels who guard the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery. Each of the four pistols bears a specific name and theme engraved on the pistol's dust cover: Silence, Respect, Dignity, and Perseverance. "Silence" and "Respect", are highly polished with brown wood handgrips, used for daylight hours, while "Dignity" and "Perseverance" are matte black pistols with black wood handgrips for night duty and bouts of inclement weather. All four guns use an aluminum frame, rather than the polymer plastic of the standard M17, while the controls are the standard matte black. The rear slide cocking serrations of the regular M17 are replaced with "XXI", a reference to the twenty-one steps the guards take on their patrol in front of the tomb, as well as the 21-gun salute. Various materials of significance are incorporated into the pistol. The wood grips are crafted from wooden planks removed from the deck of the USS Olympia, the ship which carried the first Unknown Soldier to the United States in 1921. Marble dust from the tomb's restoration is also sealed in a glass vial and used in place of the front tritium sight. The M17s only have engravings in one area of the pistol, on the sight plate, which features an engraving of three Greek figures, Peace, Victory, and Valor.
the US is such a deeply unserious country

Beretta M9A4…Spicy Italian

Having served in the U.S. Navy for almost 9 and a half years as well as on the ship’s security force, I was fortunate enough to get a chance to handle a number of small arms. We still had the 1911 pistols when I first arrived onboard, but then switched over to the Beretta M9. The Navy is always behind the front line services like the army and Marine Corps when it comes to small arms, so there we were in the mid 90’s still using an 80 year old pistol. They were beat up and loose from many years of service and rebuilds, so the change over to the new Beretta was a breath of fresh air. For a couple of decades I wanted to get a Beretta M9 for my personal collection, but never did so. Then Beretta came out with their modernized M9, the M9A3 which was supposed to compete in the new military handgun trials to replace the outgoing original M9. Unfortunately, that contest was lost to Sig Sauer and their P320 M17/M18.

Fast forward a few years after that defeat, I still longed for a Beretta M9 pistol. I was close to picking up the M9A3, but then the M9A4 came out. This was very similar to the M9A3 with it’s slender grip that had grip panels for those with larger hands, a threaded barrel and that oh so nice looking coyote or FDE finish. The biggest difference between the Beretta M9A3 and the M9A4 was the addition of an optic plate setup on the new M9A4. I knew at this point that the one that I wanted was the M9A4 variant. Both of these newer Beretta models look so spicy between their awesome desert inspired finish and the ammo box type of case they come in as well as coming with a total of 3 magazines. Many will point to these pistols as an outdated design overall, but with some more modern changes, but until you handle and shoot one, you won’t know what you’re missing.

When I picked up my new Beretta M9A4 pistol I decided upon an RS-10 red dot for the optic but I might switch it over to an RMR at some point down the road. The RS-10 works perfectly fine on the M9A4. The one thing about the Beretta is that the optic does sit rather high, so co-witness of the iron sights isn’t possible. The other change I made to my M9A4 was a trigger kit from Langdon Tactical. They make a customized trigger kit in a bag with your preferred weight and hammer style. The Beretta isn’t terribly difficult to work on with the right tools, but it isn’t a Glock that’s for sure.

The Beretta M9A4 is an absolute pleasure to shoot whether suppressed or unsuppressed. I will run my Rugged Suppressors Obsidian 9 on the M9A4 from time to time, but mostly I shoot it unsuppressed. The trigger is super smooth in both single and double action. These and other Beretta pistols come in and out of stock over at Brownells from time to time. If you’re in the market for a modernized classic like these Beretta M9A4 pistols, definitely keep an eye out and sign up for in stock notifications. The 92X is also strikingly similar in features without the tan finish.

37 (DOTM)
Faceclaim: Glen Powell

Leo is a very relaxed, down-to-earth man whenever he’s not on duty. Though when he’s on duty, he’s very serious and ready to work. He’d lay his life down for any of his fellow soldiers without hesitation.
“So you mean to tell me, the reason you called me here out of my nice, warm bed is to hunt down the little brat who doesn’t even exist in the system? A fucking ghost? Great-”
Wears:
His lieutenant's uniform (07/start of the movie)
His captain’s uniform (ROTF- interchanged with his N.E.S.T. uniform)
A red Tom and Jerry T-shirt and a pair of blue/blue grey shorts
A black sweatshirt, a pair of cargo pants from his Ranger uniform, and a pair of black boots
Weapons:
Sig Sauer M17
Barret M107
Glock 19
Combat knife
Birthday: October 18, 1975
Sexuality: Bi
Love interest: Captain William Lennox
“And when those things come back? Then what? We don’t have an infinite amount of sabot rounds, sir-.”
Backstory:
Unlike Rhys, Leo Wilson had no prior knowledge or association with the Cybertronians. He grew up in Richmond, Virginia and he has two younger sisters, Ellie and Aurora. Though the two of them aren’t shown in the films. Leo joined the Army not long after he graduated high school, and he quickly worked his way through the ranks. He worked hard, eventually ending up as the first lieutenant in a squad of Army Rangers- and that is when he met William Lennox, his captain at the time. However, the two of them didn’t grow close until much later, not long before Blackout and Wraith attacked the SOCCENT base in Qatar. Lennox and Leo were taking part in a mini celebration their squadron was throwing after a successful op when they’d had too much to drink and ended up hooking up. Leo came to regret that night, seeing as his Captain was married, and instead threw himself into his work in hopes of distracting himself. This didn’t last long, especially after the SOCCENT base attack. That only served to bring the two closer together, the same being said for the Battle of Mission City. Leo also met Ironhide, the Autobot weapons specialist, not long after Leo and his fellow Rangers were brought stateside.
“We gotta get outta here, don’t have long until the Decepticons get here-”

Day 5: Groton Horde Part II.
I never thought I would be in this position, driving 70mph in a military truck to find ammo to get to soldiers fighting zombies outside of a heavily baracaded naval base. Well, here I am.
I pulled up to the ammo depot and almost fell out of the truck. The air was thick with the smell of gunpowder. I ran to the massive overhead door and looked for anyone who seemed important. I saw a 2nd Leiutenant eating a hotdog and jogged to him.
Sir, I don't have much time." I said. He looked at me and turned his head back to the other soldier. "Sir!" I said a little louder.
"What!", the man yelled back, irritated. "I'd like to get this shit under control before I start answering questions for civilians. Now if you'll excuse..."
I interrupted him. "No I won't fucking excuse you. While your fat ass is here eating hotdogs, your guys are running low on ammo!" I was seething.
He retorted, "Now listen...".
"No", I said "I have a truck outside..."
"Pardon me", a man in fatigues cut in, motioning to me, "you, come with me."
"Im sorry, sir", I said, "but the men out there need a LogPac for M27 and 17, and they need it now, or they won't be fighting for..."
"LT", He cut in again, yelling to the soldier. "Get on the lift and load 3 pallets of 5.56 and 1 of 9mm onto that small trailer. Load some 7.62 belts on as well. Put some rations and water on it and hook it to his truck." The LT saluted him and took off. "You", he motioned again, "lets go." I followed him to a room, and he grabbed a cart. He took 20 rifles out of a box and moved down a few boxes, pulling out 10 pistols. "You ever shot a gun before, son?", he asked me.
"I'm an A Class USPSA shooter".
"Great," he exclaimed, "you have an air about you. You serve?"
"Yes, Sir," I replied proudly, "Navy retired LT. MC out of Fort Meade. Academy. Transferred to Bragg. 9 years. Half that overseas."
"Well ok", he said with an air of respect. "After you get these unloaded, I want you back here. You'll help with distribution. Drive slow. Take this, have them drop the trailer there, and come back for another to bring to the next group." He handed me a Sig Sauer M17, the military variant of the P320.
"Ok," I replied. He turned to another soldier, and I jogged out of the room and through the depot with the cart.

If you had to choose: Beretta M9A4 vs Glock 19X

This is a battle I seem to fight fairly often in my firearm collection. When I’m going to the range or when I’m choosing a fighting pistol. In this battle, never could there be 2 pistols that were more different in both the design, look, feel and how they shoot and operate than the Beretta M9A4( 92 series) and the a Glock 19X. A little bit of history on the both of these hard hitting pistols. Both more or less were part of the Military’s MHS handgun trials some years back. The M9A3 was Beretta’s submission which is essentially the M9A4 sans the optics cut. The Glock 19X was Glock’s submission except this commercially available version does not have the add3d thumb safety which was a requirement of the trials. Neither of them won the trial and lost to Sig with their P320(M17/18) pistol.

This battle still rages on in my firearm collection. The Glock 19X pistol is pretty readily available over at Brownells and there’s even an updated version with an optics cut, the Glock 19X MOS variant. I’ve been waiting to get my hands on one of these, but they’ve been fairly scarce at Brownells. The Beretta M9A4 is another one that seems to rarely come in stock. Some of the similar Beretta variants such as the 92xi do come in stock at Brownells fairly regularly however. The Glock 19X was actually my very first factory Glock pistol. While I never truly cared for Glocks generally speaking, this one had to make its way into my collection and I’m glad it did. Whether you like Glocks or not, you can’t deny the utmost in reliability these are known for. The one I have has thousands of rounds through it and is totally factory with the exception of added grips from Handleit Grips. The Beretta has a trigger kit from Langdon Tactical as well as an optics from Cyelee Optics.

The differences between these 2 hard hitters is stark. The Beretta is a single action double action pistol with a decocking lever. The grip angle is more vertical as well. Although the trigger is nice and crisp it’s been drastically improved by Langdon Tactical. The Glock is a striker fired pistol not much different than the Glocks before and after it. No external safeties of any kind and a grip angle like any other Glock pistol that people either like or hate. The slide is a Glock 19 sized slide but the frame is the size of a Glock 17. Both of these pistols are in shades of FDE and Coyote colors and come with a variety of grip add ons for larger hands. The best way I can explain shooting these 2 pistols is one is very much a duty style pistol that shoots well and has an ok trigger with a decent pull around 5.5lbs. The other can be a duty pistol, but with the refinements one might want for something more shootable and enjoyable experience. Kinda like beer versus wine.
At the end of the day I love both of these pistols and cannot imagine not having them in my safe.
