The Tale of Running Away
2016, Sifang Art Museum
Officer Liu encountered a very strange murder case. At one particular residence, an ancient painting—stolen three years ago, with the culprit murdering the owner of the painting—was stolen again, with the current owner again murdered; the suspect ran off to the mountain. From the police’s composite drawing, it was discovered that the suspect looked identical to the criminal from three years ago. But he was dead already, three years ago. It simply couldn’t be the same person stealing the same painting.
The two cases were virtually the same in the details. Officer Liu distinctly remembered how the culprit back then murdered the owner, stole the painting, and made off for the mountain. Residents on the mountain said the culprit was sequestered in a cave. And so Officer Liu hid in the cave, lying in wait. When the culprit arrived, they struggled, with the suspect shot dead while resisting. Now he has come again—could he really be a ghost?
Officer Liu investigated for most of the month without any leads. For lack of a better option, he went to take a look at the cave again. Still, he was unwilling to believe the suspect was still there. Once there, it turned out someone really was staying there. Like the last time, he secretly tucked himself in a corner and waited….Not a peep was heard through the night, only the sound of bats flapping their wings. The cave was dim and chilly, and a glimmer of moonlight shot through the mouth of the cave. Just as Officer Liu was starting to feel sleepy, he faintly sensed something. Footsteps gradually neared; there really was no way to tell in the pitch black. Once he was sure this person was right in front of him, he pounced. To his surprise… ...
