(NewsNation) — Hurricane Milton, with estimated top wind speeds reaching 120 mph, made landfall as a Category 3 near Siesta Key, Florida, on Wednesday evening, according to the National Hurricane Center. Siesta Key is a barrier island off Sarasota with white-sand beaches and has about 5,500 residents. The community is about 70 miles south of Tampa. At Albert Whitted Airport in St. Petersburg, sustained winds reached 64 mph, with gusts up to 93 mph. A WeatherFlow station at Egmont Channel recorded even stronger winds, with sustained speeds of 78 mph and gusts up to 100 mph. Meanwhile, Skyway Fishing Pier saw sustained winds of 73 mph, with gusts as high as 102 mph. Farther inland, at Orlando Executive Airport, gusts of 60 mph were reported. Officials are saying the time for evacuations has passed, and those who did not leave their homes need to shelter in place. The hurricane threatens to deliver storm surges up to 13 feet on the Gulf Coast, catastrophic flooding and destructive winds.
