...hello?
so, yeah, i just disappeared for a not insignificant amount of time, huh? it's been a tough few months with a partner in an active mental health crisis and me dealing with the effects that had on my own health, but things are getting better. slowly and in fits and starts, but getting better.
for those of you reading slight injuries, drastic measures, i hadn't written one word since the first week of november - until today. since it's been so long since my last update, i've decided to finish the whole thing off before i post anything more. when i update, it will be to finish off that fic. i hope that's okay with y'all.
i'm so so so behind on notifs too, but (for the first time in months) looking forward to being back on here and talking all things spirk again. i hope each and every one of you is able to find your own moments of happiness and peace rn, and if not, i'll try and bring you some joy. take care 💙

Singh noted that he has attended the Army Commanders' Conference for over five years, emphasising that these high-level discussions benefit both the armed forces and the nation as a whole. He also praised the Army's efforts in integrating cutting-edge technology. Commenting on the complex global situation, Singh said "unconventional and asymmetric warfare, including hybrid warfare, will be integral to future conflicts." He urged the armed forces to consider these factors when planning strategies, emphasising the need for continuous learning from both current and historical incidents. Regarding the situation along the northern borders, Singh expressed full confidence in the Army's ability to handle any contingency, while noting that peaceful resolution talks would continue at all levels. He commended the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) for significantly improving road communication in both the Western and Northern borders, despite challenging conditions, and urged that this progress must continue. "I compliment the excellent synergy between the CAPF/ Police forces and the Army in tackling the menace of terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir. The synergised operations in J&K are contributing to increased stability and peace in the region which was also evident in the recently conducted elections in Jammu and Kashmir, and for this I again compliment the Indian Army," he said. The Defence Minister lauded the Army for the high standard of operational preparedness and capabilities which he has always been experiencing first-hand during his visits to forward areas. Constraints on dark matter self-interaction from the internal density profiles of X-COP galaxy clusters. (arXiv:2205.01123v1 [astro-ph.CO])
TThe fundamental properties of the postulated dark matter (DM) affect the internal structure of gravitationally-bound structures. In the cold dark matter paradigm, DM particles interact only via gravity. Their distribution is well represented by an Einasto profile with shape parameter $\alpha\approx0.18$, in the smallest dwarf galaxies or the most massive galaxy clusters alike. Conversely, if dark matter particles self-interact via additional forces, we expect the mass density profiles of DM halos to flatten in their central regions, thereby increasing the Einasto shape parameter. We measure the structural properties of the 12 massive X-COP galaxy clusters from observations of their hot gaseous atmosphere using the X-ray observatory XMM-Newton, and of the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect using the Planck all-sky survey. After removing morphologically disturbed systems, we measure Einasto shape parameters with mean $\langle\alpha\rangle = 0.19 \pm 0.03$ and intrinsic scatter $\sigma_{\alpha}=0.06$, in close agreement with the prediction of the cold dark matter paradigm. We use cosmological hydrodynamical simulations of cluster formation with self-interacting DM (BAHAMAS-SIDM) to determine how the Einasto shape parameter depends on the self-interaction cross section. We use the fitted relation to turn our measurements of $\alpha$ into constraints on the self-interaction cross section, which imply $\sigma/m < 0.19$ cm$^2$/g (95% confidence level) at collision velocity $v_\mathrm{DM-DM}\sim1,000$ km/s. This is lower than the interaction cross-section required for dark matter self-interactions to solve the core-cusp problem in dwarf spheroidal galaxies, unless the cross section is a strong function of velocity.

Patch alert: Microsoft acknowledges printer bug; forced 1709 upgrades continue
The patches have been out for only a few days, but as best I as can tell at this early juncture, November’s Patch Tuesday bugs aren’t as bad as they were in October. Thank Redmond.
If you use an Epson dot matrix printer, if you’re seeing an error that CDPUserSvc has stopped working, or if you were forcibly upgraded from Win10 Creators Update, version 1703, to Fall Creators Update, version 1709, I have some good news and some bad news.

Constraint on hybrid stars with gravitational wave events. (arXiv:2011.05104v1 [astro-ph.HE])
Motivated by the recent discoveries of compact objects from LIGO/Virgo observations, we study the possibility of identifying some of these objects as compact stars made of dark matter called dark stars, or the mix of dark and nuclear matters called hybrid stars. Especially, in GW190814 a new compact object with 2.6 $M_{\odot}$ is reported. This could be the lightest black hole, the heaviest neutron star, and a dark or hybrid star. In this work we extend the discussion on the interpretations of the recent LIGO/Virgo events as hybrid stars made of various self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) in the isotropic limit. We pay particular attention to the saddle instability of the hybrid stars which will constrain the possible SIDM models.

On Prolate Halos and Rotation Curves. (arXiv:2010.06573v1 [astro-ph.GA])
We propose a simple geometrical mechanism for the flattening of galactic rotation curves, the local compression of field lines around their planes induced by elongated dark--mater halos, and elaborate on its possible role in Nature. Fitting 69 rotation curves from the SPARC database with deformed versions of two popular models of dark--matter halos, we collect some evidence that prolate dark--mater distributions improve by 5\% or more the agreement with data for a wide fraction of the galaxies that we have examined. Moreover, the rotation curves of some galaxies seem to suggest the presence of string--like objects at their centers. If taken at face value, all these results would favor cold dark matter models (CDM) with respect to scenarios based on self-interacting dark matter (SiDM), modified gravity, or modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND).

The Milky Way's Halo and Subhalos in Self-Interacting Dark Matter. (arXiv:1903.01469v1 [astro-ph.GA])
We perform high-resolution simulations of a MW-like galaxy in a self-interacting cold dark matter model with elastic cross section over mass of $1~\rm cm^2/g$ (SIDM) and compare to a model without self-interactions (CDM). We run our simulations with and without a time-dependent embedded potential to capture effects of the baryonic disk and bulge contributions. The CDM and SIDM simulations with the embedded baryonic potential exhibit remarkably similar host halo profiles, subhalo abundances and radial distributions within the virial radius. The SIDM host halo is denser in the center than the CDM host and has no discernible core, in sharp contrast to the case without the baryonic potential (core size $\sim 7 \, \rm kpc$). The most massive subhalos (with $V_{\mathrm{peak}}> 20 \, \rm km/s$) in our SIDM simulations, expected to host the classical satellite galaxies, have density profiles that are less dense than their CDM analogs at radii less than 500 pc but the deviation diminishes for less massive subhalos. With the baryonic potential included in the CDM and SIDM simulations, the most massive subhalos do not display the too-big-to-fail problem. However, the least dense among the massive subhalos in both these simulations tend to have the smallest pericenter values, a trend that is not apparent among the bright MW satellite galaxies.

Star Clusters, Self-Interacting Dark Matter Halos and Black Hole Cusps: The Fluid Conduction Model and its Extension to General Relativity. (arXiv:1809.02618v1 [astro-ph.HE])
We adopt the fluid conduction approximation to study the evolution of spherical star clusters and self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) halos. We also explore the formation and dynamical impact of density cusps that arise in both systems due to the presence of a massive, central black hole. The large N-body, self-gravitating systems we treat are "weakly-collisional": the mean free time between star or SIDM particle collisions is much longer than their characteristic crossing (dynamical) time scale, but shorter than the system lifetime. The fluid conduction model reliably tracks the "gravothermal catastrophe" in star clusters and SIDM halos without black holes. For a star cluster with a massive, central black hole, this approximation reproduces the familiar Bahcall-Wolf quasistatic density cusp for the stars bound to the black hole and shows how the cusp halts the "gravothermal catastrophe" and causes the cluster to re-expand. An SIDM halo with an initial black hole central density spike that matches onto to an exterior NFW profile relaxes to a core-halo structure with a central density cusp determined by the velocity dependence of the SIDM interaction cross section. The success and relative simplicity of the fluid conduction approach in evolving such "weakly-collisional", quasiequilibrium Newtonian systems motivates its extension to relativistic systems. We present a general relativistic extension here.

Extragalactic diffuse gamma-rays from dark matter annihilation: revised prediction and full modelling uncertainties. (arXiv:1711.08323v1 [astro-ph.CO])
Recent high-energy data from Fermi-LAT on the diffuse gamma-background (DGRB) have been used to set among the best constraints on annihilating TeV cold dark matter (DM) candidates. In order to assess the robustness of these limits, we revisit and update the calculation of the isotropic extragalactic gamma-ray intensity from DM annihilation. The emission from halos with masses $\geq10^{10}\,M_{\odot}$ provides a robust lower bound on the predicted intensity. The intensity including smaller halos whose properties are extrapolated from their higher mass counterparts is typically 5 times higher, and boost from subhalos yields an additional factor ~1.5. We also rank the uncertainties from all ingredients and provide a detailed error budget in table 1. Overall, our fiducial intensity is a factor 5 lower than the one derived by the Fermi-LAT collaboration for their latest analysis. This indicates that the limits set on extragalactic DM annihilations could be relaxed by the same factor. We also calculate the expected intensity for self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) in massive halos and find the emission reduced by a factor 3 compared to the collisionless counterpart. The next release of the CLUMPY code will provide all the tools necessary to reproduce and ease future improvements of this prediction.
